This report includes data for 1963 on injury experience, with related employment statistics, at coal mines in the United States. These data are presented in tabular form under the following headings: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the Items is confidential. It present's analytical data for 4,608 samples, representing the products of 101 companies. The samples were collected during December 1956, January and February 1957. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the Notional Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

Underground stone mining represents an emerging sector for the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, adequate stone pillar design methods will become more important. It is the purpose of this paper to examine current design practices and to discuss issues for safe mine layouts so that a rational first approach towards balancing the demands for increased production can be weighed against increased risk to worker safety from rib instabilities and pillar failures. Seventy-two stone mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width-to- height ratios below 1.5 and subjected to excessive stress levels appear more likely to fail. When width-to- height ratios fall below 1 .O, defects in the pillars, such as through-going discontinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties, and orientation are important factors controlling pillar strength. The influence of discontinuity dip, a characteristic easily identified in the field, was examined so that its presence could be accounted for in developing generalized guidelines for pillar design.

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

The new international fact of life that has emerged in the 70's is that foreign energy sources can no longer be considered either reliable or low in price. As a result, the United States is turning its full attention to its domestic energy resources. The figures about proved domestic reserves are often used to reassure us about the Nation's energy future: assuming a 50 percent recovery factor, there are at least 219 billion tons of recoverable bituminous coal and lignite, of which 31 percent is available by surface methods; proved reserves of crude petroleum and natural gas liquids total 34.3 billion barrels and 6.4 billion barrels, respectively. There is also about 4 billion tons of recoverable anthracite coal, a premium low-sulfur fuel of high heating value, which is all but priced out of the market because of the high costs of producing it. Total fossil fuel resources are even larger, although there are no guarantees concerning how much might become usable, and when, and at what cost. The figures, however, are impressive. They include the equivalent of about 200 billion barrels of oil potentially recoverable from high grade oil shale; 100 billion barrels in "heavy oil" deposits; and the equivalent of 25 to 35 billion barrels of oil in domestic deposits of "tar sands," and substantial quantities of conventional oil and gas resources. A bench-scale expansion tester using 71 grams of coal was developed to determine the practicability of an apparatus of this size to investigate the effect of variables such as oxidation, blending, bulk density, inerts, size consist, petrographic differences, and rate of heating on the expanding properties of coal. The value of this tester is shown by the correlation that exists between its results and those of the larger scale sole-heated oven expansion apparatus used in commercial plants. From tests on 32 coals the standard error of estimate for predicting sole-oven results from bench-scale results is ± 5.3 percentage points. A standard deviation of the difference between pairs of tests in the latter apparatus of ± 2.1 percentage points was determined for 31 samples. In the sole-heated oven test the expansion of a coal at constant pressure is directly proportional to the dry coal bulk density. Tests in the bench-scale tester show a similar relationship between expansion and bulk density. When the blending ratios of high-and low-volatile coals are varied, similar changes in expansion are observed in both the sole-heated oven and the bench-scale tester. Therefore, the effect of other variables on expansion should be similar in the latter apparatus.

The Scarlet mine, in Randolph County, N. C., was operated on a small scale at intervals from 1899 to 1915, but no records of the quantity of ore produced are available. J. I. Moore unwatered the mine in March 1948, and Bureau of Mines&apos; engineers examined the underground workings. Several assays checked previous sampling of the mine and indicated a small but comparatively high-grade copper-zinc deposit. The high metal content of the veins and the possibility of developing additional reserves prompted the Bureau of-Mines to drill three holes, totaling 530 feet, at the deposit during March and April 1948. Drilling disclosed that the mineralized vein did not extend over 300 feet along the strike and is probably limited in depth to the contact with the granite mylonite.

Three arc-melted ingots, two of a titanium-7 percent manganese alloy and the third of unalloyed titanium, were forged and rolled into 3/4-inch plate; comparative data were obtained on these processes. The finished plate, part of which was used by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance, was tested for mechanical and other properties. These properties were correlated with sponge purity, forging technique, rolling temperature, and cooling rate from the rolling temperature. For the alloy material, transformation data were obtained, and their age-hardening characteristics were studied. The temperature-impact relationship was established for rolled sections from all three ingots. INTRODUCTION Arc-melted ingots of unalloyed titanium and a titanium-manganese alloy were fabricated into plate under closely controlled conditions by personnel of the Metals and Alloys Section, Physical Metallurgy Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md. This program was cosponsored by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance. Bureau of Mines interest lay in correlating the processing procedures with the mechanical properties of the finished plate.

No noticeable international economic recovery occurred during the first half of 1982. Industrial production continued to fall in the United States, Canada and Italy and to hold steady in France. Modest increases in production occurred in Japan, England and Germany, although some decline took place from March to April. The U.S. mining industry has been more severely affected by the world recession than the U.S. economy. This is not immediately obvious when comparing the U.S. mining industrial production index from 1981 to 1982, which decreased 8.5 percent, as compared to a 7.1 percent decline for total domestic industries. However, "mining" industry statistics in the U.S. national economic accounting system include petroleum and natural gas as well as minerals. When metal mining is isolated, the decrease in production from 1981 to 1982 is 19.3 percent. If metal mining production continues to perform at the same rate during the third and fourth quarters of 1982 as during the first half of the year, declines from 1981 levels will be quite severe. Aluminum will have declined 22 percent, copper 18 percent, iron ore 24 percent, lead 3 percent, steel 29 percent, titanium 2 percent and zinc 25 percent.

Because economic and geographic factors have focused particular attention on the use of anthrafines in blends containing Lower Kittanning coal as the low-volatile component, samples from this particular bed were selected for experimentation whenever practical. Carbonizing tests were carried out in accordance with standard procedures, using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated ovens. Most of the results are in general agreement with those reported by previous investigators. Specific findings are as follows: (1) The effectiveness of anthrafines in reducing coal expansion is such that even highly expanding, low-volatile coals can be carbonized safely with suitable additions of anthrafines and careful control of charge density. (2) Increases in coke size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity appear to be characteristic for additions up to approximately 15 percent to a fixed base blend. When anthracite of minus-48-mesh size was used and the proportion of low-volatile coal simultaneously increased, these indexes increased only slightly or remained substantially constant. (3) No increase in breeze formation was noted for additions in amounts up to 15 percent. (4) Abradability of coke was increased by additions of anthracite of No. 5 Buckwheat size, but it either decreased or remained sub¬stantially constant when the inert was ground to pass a 48-mesh screen.

About 24 per cent of our total production of bituminous coal is used in industrial power plants. As regards fuel conservation, therefore, the recovery of unburned fuel from furnace refuse presents interesting possibilities. Considerable attention has been given to this problem in the past, but because of the comparatively low initial cost of power plant fuel in the pre-war period little progress, has been made in this direction in the United States. Because of the higher price of coal in Europe more attention has there been given to the problem. In Germany a process has been developed for separating unburned coal in refuse by using an electromagnetic separator In the United States the use of mechanical stokers enabled low-priced screenings of high ash content to be used, so that even with relatively high percentages of combustible material remaining in the refuse, the loss in money is not excessive. If the price of screenings returns to the pre-war level around $1.00 per ton the process proposed here will probably not be especially interesting, except where the freight charges are very high. However, if the price of delivered coal continues high, such a process should result in considerable saving. The cost of continuous operation of such a refuse treating plant should not exceed 75 cents per ton of fuel recovered.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to determine possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies to improve ultimate recovery from oil reservoirs. A literature search was conducted to provide background information for initiating laboratory research. The purpose of the literature search was to review the uses that have been made of acoustic energy in the petroleum industry and to select procedures and techniques that could be applied to the solution of petroleum production problems. The characteristics (68)3 of ultrasonic energy make it potentially useful to a variety of industrial and experimental applications. Pulse techniques (99) are common in the testing of materials where inspection is accomplished by propagating an ultrasonic pulse through the material. Viscosity measurements (45) are made by interpreting changes in the absorption of sound as it is propagated through a flowing liquid. Cavitation phenomena (93) produced by high-intensity ultrasound in liquids have been used extensively in industrial cleaning, machining, impact grinding, and aluminum soldering operations.
