"The Keystone and St. George properties are in the so-called Johnson Camp area and adjoin a property that in recent years has become a steady producer of low-to medium-grade copper-zinc ores. The Keystone Copper Co. was active intermittently from 1908 to 1938 and during 1926 to 1937 produced a recorded 1,100 tons of 5 percent copper ore. There is no evidence that ore has been produced from the St. George property.In the Johnson Camp area both igneous and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from pre-Cambrian to Quaternary are exposed. The ore bodies are in the Paleozoic rocks and occur principally in the Abrigo formation, which is composed mainly of limestones and shales. The rocks of the productive zones are metamorphosed and are cut by systems of fractures and faults. Chalcopyrite and sphalerite, the principal ore minerals, replace altered limestones to form deposits locally called mantos and chimneys.Investigation of the Keystone and St. George deposits by the Bureau of Mines included topographical and geological mapping of the surface and the underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface. A total of 10,067.8 feet was drilled in 22 holes. The drilling started November 13, 1947, and was completed August 19, 1948.This report records factual information obtained during the course of the investigation."

The study of "bottom-hole samples follows in natural sequence the study of samples obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1930, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs.. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, That physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing Tells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental data were obtained in the study of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at higher pressure, and later became mixed with the original undissolved gas.

The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. Bureau of Mines research has shown that very low-sulfur pressure vessel steels with improved mechanical properties can be prepared by two melting processes. Four pressure vessel steels having sulfur contents ranging from 0.0008 to 0.0040 wt-pct, were produced by the electric-arc furnace or by the electroslag processes. Calcium carbide was used as a desulfurizer in the electricarc furnace. Fluxes containing at least 40 wt-pct CaO provided sufficient desulfurization during electroslag remelting. Element recoveries were higher for electroslag remelting than for metal melted in the electric-arc furnace. Bar rolled from electroslag-remelted ingots generally possessed higher tensile strengths and ductility than bar rolled from it t melted in the electric-arc furnace. Charpy V-Notch upper shelf energies were also improved as a result of electroslag remelting. The primary failure mode during impact testing was was microvoid coalescence. Sulfide inclusions were minimal, especially in the electroslag-remelted material.

This publication presents original thermal data for a typical variety of perlite and supplies basic information for use in computing energy requirements in processes for expanding perlite. Perlite has been defined by Raiston 4/ as any silicious lava containing dissolved water in sufficient amount to errand into bubbles when the material is quickly heated to a suitable point in the softening range." The uses of expanded perlite in) the construction and ceramic industries have been discussed by Ralston 4/ and King. 5/ The work described here had a dual purpose: (1) It was desired to ascertain quantitatively, using a typical variety of perlite, just how firmly the contained water is held, and (2) it was desired to obtain basic thermal data sufficient for energy-requirement calculations in processes for expanding perlite.

A survey of the literature eras made covering the use of aqueous non-aqueous, and fused-welt systems for the electrowinning or electroplating of molybdenum metal. The survey was prepared in order to provide background for further investigations directed toward the electrodeposition of pure molybdenum metal from either aqueous or nonaqueous mediums. While a thorough effort was made to cover all available references, a critical review was not attempted nor does this survey pretend to be exhaustive in nature.

A laboratory mineral-dressing investigation of manganese ore from the Martin mine, Independence County, Ark., succeeded in recovering ferrograde manganese products. Sintered flotation concentrates analyzing 40.7 and 41.4 percent manganese at overall recoveries of 54.6 and 47.7 percent, respectively, were produced from preconcentrated feed, Preconcentration of the ore for flotation included treatment by magnetic separation and by a combination of magnetic separation and heavy-medium processing. The mineral-dressing study of the Martin mine rhodochrosite ore was part of a general program of the Bureau of Mines to develop domestic sources of strategic minerals, including manganese. Several such potential sources of manganese exist in the Batesville, Ark., district, one of which is represented by the Martin mine. Although the Martin mine area has not been delimited with respect to total reserve tonnage, it is considered to be one of the more important occurrences of manganese in the district. It is estimated that several 100,000 tons of manganese carbonate ore are present in this and similar properties.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems at two different mineral processing operations. Both systems have proven very effective at reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mill in a cost-effective manner. A 25,500-cfm system installed at a clay processing mill provided approximately 10 air changes per hour. This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by approximately 40 pct throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 50,000 and 100,000 cfm of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 air changes per hour. Average mill-wide respirable dust reductions were 36 and 64 pct, respectively. Not only did these systems reduce respirable dust concentrations and increase visibility throughout the mills, they were also easy to install and required minimal maintenance. A total mill ventilation system provides a general purging of the mill air; the system should be viewed as a supplemental technique to assist other dust control systems in operation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.

This paper, which describes the milling practice of the Verde Central Mines, Inc., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Verde Central concentrator is located in Walnut Gulch, about 1 mile west of Jerome, Ariz., and on the Jerome-Prescott highway. It is about 1,000 feet distant from the main shaft of the Verde Central mine and treats ore from this mine only. The mill is connected with the main shaft of the mine by a 24-inch gave railway, over which the ore is hauled in 5-cubic yard capacity, rocker, side-dump cars, by a 3-ton Brookville gasoline locomotive.

"The crushed-stone industry has long been troubled with the problem of producing a more or less cubical product for use as concrete aggregate. Its seriousness varies widely for each producer, depending upon the character of the rock employed for raw material and the ultimate use of the crushed stone. For many construction uses, such as the macadam or bituminous-concrete- type road, flat pieces are not objectionable and may even be preferable to more cubical rock. However, most specifications for concrete require that the stone must be reasonably free from flat and elongated pieces.The rigid specifications set by many contractors have resulted in the rejection of coarse aggregate that, except for the presence of an excessive amount of flat and elongated pieces, would be entirely acceptable. In many instances, if an efficient, economical method of removing flat and elongated pieces were available, local producers could meet the requirements of the contractor and thus eliminate the necessity for importing more cubical material.A brief investigation of the problem of removal of flat and elongated pieces from crushed aggregate, carried out at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, indicated that it is mechanically possible to remove flat pieces from crushed rock.TEST EQUIPMENTA number of mechanical devices are used by the coal industry for separating slate from coal; these depend upon the difference in shape of the crushed slate as compared with the coal. Such devices as shutter screens, spiral separators, and the Norman picker would be suitable for removing flat pieces from crushed rock in the same manner as they are used by the coal industry. None of these devices was immediately available for testing purposes, so an attempt was made to construct a simple device that could be used in commercial operations."

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. Through the use of statistical methods, estimates of metal content and tonnage of an ore body made by using data from 18 diamond-drill holes are compared with actual values established with data from 1,829 drift samples. The reliability of the estimates made from the drill holes is assessed in several ways. The relationship of metal content (assay-width product) to grade is explained. It is concluded that useful estimates can be made from 18 drill holes provided that reasonable assumptions are made and certain risks accepted. The ore body investigated is the Don Tomas vein of the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory investigations with the objective of developing an alternative process for recovering cobalt and copper from complex sulfide concentrates. Processes currently used depend largely upon precipitation techniques to remove impurities and recover cobalt from sulfate liquors prepared by oxidative pressure leaching of the sulfide concentrates. The Bureau conducted bench-scale research on a process for treating cobaltite concentrates, comprising (1) oxidative pressure leaching, (2) jarosite precipitation followed by H202 oxidation and pH control to remove iron and arsenic, (3) copper solvent extraction with a mixed hydroxyoxime-amine extractant, (4) copper electrowinning from recirculating acidic strip liquor, (5) selective cobalt extraction from copper solvent extraction raffinate with a phosphinic acid extractant, and (6) electrowinning of cobalt from a recirculating weak acid strip liquor. Overall cobalt and copper recoveries were 91.7 and 84.1 pct, respectively. Electrowon products assayed 99.8 pct Co and 99.89 pct Cu.

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3134, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3140, 3147, 3150, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively.
