"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. "INTRODUCTION The Phelps-Dodge Corp. New Cornelia Branch open-pit copper mine operated without a fatality in the drilling and blasting department from December 13, 1937, to April 1, 1947, and continuing.Between the dates named the explosives crews had a total of 746,520 man-hours of exposure and handled 12,000 tons of explosives, over 770,000 detonators, 2,300,000 feet of fuse, and 7,700,000 feet of Primacord in loading holes to break 116,780,000 tons of material.It is the purpose of this paper to record the procautions taken to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation where safety is definitely a matter of forethought rather than chance.GENERAL INFORMATIONThe New Cornelia Branch open-pit mine operates on a large, low-grade, disseminated-copper deposit about one-half mile south of Ajo, Ariz. The pit is approximately oval; the ore body being some 4,800 feet long and 2,750 feet wide. Ore is mined with electric shovels loading into railroad cars. All benches in- the pit are 40 feet in height except two, which are 60 feet high.The New Cornelia ore body differs from most porphyry-copper deposits in being hard and siliceous. In common with the other low-grade porphyry-copper deposits, continued operation is possible only with economical handling of large tonnages. This has necessitated a great deal of study in the evolution of a safe and efficient method of handling the large quantities of explosives needed in breaking this hard-rock material."

This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.

A special high-pressure Burnett-type compressibility apparatus was constructed and used to determine compressibility factors for pure helium, pure nitrogen, and nine helium-nitrogen mixtures containing 89.47, 79.04, 69.69, 60.09, 49.24, 41.02, 30.99, 20.53, and 10.67 mole-percent helium. A total of 161 runs were made consisting of 2,355 observed pressures. Data were obtained at 0°, 25°, and 50° C and at pressures to 1,000 atmospheres. A power series in the reciprocal volume, commonly called a Leiden series, is used to represent the compressibility factors. Three parameters in the series are required to represent helium, five parameters to represent nitrogen, and from three to five parameters to represent the mixtures. Compressibility factors are believed to be accurate to better than 0.1 percent over the entire pressure, temperature, and composition range.

In this period of generally increasing taxes of various kinds, one hears less complaint by mining companies about the high cost of workmen's accident compensation than was the case a few years ago, the reason perhaps being that other and more pressing phases of the tax problem now over shadow the heavy expenditures for compensation premiums which a few years ago were considered a severe burden on the mining industry. Nevertheless, the financial expenditures of the mining industry in higher compensation benefits and hospitalization or in higher premium rates, or both, instead of being less have actually increased in many States in the past year. In the spring of 1937, proposals for increased benefits to injured employees in compensation, hospitalization, or medical aid were actively before legislatures in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and possibly other States. In some cases, the proposed increases in benefits were so much greater than expenditures for similar items in the past that premium rates per $100 of payroll would almost certainly rise sharply. At this same time, occupational-disease-compensation coverage also was under consideration by legislatures in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington. Sooner or later (and probably within the next few years) occupational-disease compensation will be accorded practically as wide recognition as accident compensation receives at present, and, unquestionably, mining in all of its branches will be affected more or less drastically. Hence, the present outlook is that the mining industry, in company with practically all other industrial activities, will be confronted by materially higher compensation costs than those of the past or the present, to which rather violent exception has been taken, at least in some States and at some times.

"INTRODUCTION Technically speaking, bauxite is not a definite mineral but a mixture of several minerals belonging to a group of partly consolidated material known as laterite, which have been formed by surface weathering of rocks.The term bauxite is applied to the ore of aluminum, although a substantial amount is used for other purposes, such as a base in certain chemical industries and in the manufacture of artificial abrasives, refractories, and certain cements. Although bauxite has not been classed as strategic it now appears that the domestic supply may be insufficient for expanded defense requirements.Until recently, domestic production of metallic aluminum has been ample to meet requirements, but estimates of pyramiding future needs of the defense program have caused serious attention to be directed to the self-sufficiency of this country, both as to the supply of the raw material, bauxite, and the metallurgical capacity available to convert the ore to metallic aluminum.At the request of the Secretary of the interior, representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey recently investigated domestic resources of bauxite.A preliminary study of published literature and a field investigation disclosed that"

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. "The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 37,542-acre portion of the 57,002-acre Riordan?s Well Wilderness Study Area (NV-040-166) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. The area studied is located in Nye County, NV, about 60 miles southwest of Ely, NV. Subeconomic mineral resources of limestone and sand and gravel were identified in the study area. The Troy and Irwin mining districts, 4 miles to the west, were active between 1868 and 1963, producing small amounts of gold, silver, lead, and tungsten from mines well outside the study area. Except for minor prospecting activity, most mining activity in the study area has been since 1980, consisting of claim locations and geochemical surveys.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

A laboratory assessment of prompt and delayed neutron activation analysis with 252Cf and 14MeV neutron sources, for use as an in-situ method of determining low-level copper concentration has been performed. A simulated borehole using porphyry ore was constructed and varying copper concentrations were simulated using copper rods. Prompt neutron activation analysis experiments were consistant with earlier work and do not appear to be feasible fur copper concentration of 1.5% or less. Delayed neutron activation analysis experiments indicate that copper ore concentrations of less than 0.1% are detectable using either the 511-KeV gamma-ray of copper-64 or the 1039-KeV gamma-ray of copper-66, with high resolution detectors such as Ge (Li) or intrinsic germanium.

"In this report, we demonstrate that NF-KB, a ubiquitous transcription factor, plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Compared to the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), silica mediated a stronger activation of NF-KB p50/p50 homodimer at early phase of poststimulation. Furthermore, activation of NF-xB by silica and LPS appears to be mediated by different signal transduction pathways. Both silica and LPS increased mRNA expression in these cells for cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin- I a. This expression was attenuated along with the inhibition of NF-KB activation. It is well documented that exposure of alveolar macrophages to silica can initiate excessive production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from several early response genes (1-3). At the DNA level, a common structural characteristic of these genes is the presence of one to five NF-lCB binding sequences (KB) in the 5'-flanking region (4-6). In resting cells, NF-KB is retained in the cytoplasm in an inactive form by binding to inhibitory protein known as hcBcx, hcB~. p 105 (precursor of p50) and p 100 (precursor of p52) (7-9). Upon cellular stimulation, these inhibitory proteins are proteolytically degraded or processed by certain proteases, which allows the liberated NF-KB to translocate into the nucleus as an activated form to initiate or regulate early response gene transcription by binding to its consensus element (GGGRNNYYCC)(7).In this report, we demonstrate that silica can efficiently induce NF-lCB activation in RAW 264.7 cells, and that silica displays different characteristic from LPS in the activation of NF-KB, both with respect to NF-KB subtype composition and the signal transduction pathway that leads to the activation of NF-KB. In addition, abrogation of NF-KB activation by inhibiting the protease can dramatically reduce the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-o.) and interleukin-lex (IL-lex). These findings strongly suggest that NF-KB plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the monocyte/ macrophage cells."

To reduce operator exposure to drilling noise from roof bolting machines. Background Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a prevalent occupational illness in the United States. Studies indicate that 70%?90% of miners have NIHL significant enough to be classified as a hearing disability. Mine Safety and Health Administration studies indicated that roof bolting machine operators are among those overexposed to noise. Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling is the loudest noise source to which a roof bolting machine operator is typically exposed and contributes greatly to the operator?s noise exposure. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has further determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. To address this noise hazard, NIOSH developed a collapsible drill steel enclosure (CDSE) to encapsulate the drill steel during the drilling portion of the roof bolting machine duty cycle. In addition, NIOSH is collaborating with J. H. Fletcher & Co. in the continued development of a CDSE.

"The demand for open-hearth iron ore and the existence of suitable smelting facilities in the St. Louis area seemed to warrant investigation of several Missouri iron-ore deposits of the filled-sink type. Preliminary examinations were made in the autumn of 1944 by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Nines, and in December of the same year funds were allotted for the exploration of these properties by churn drilling. Three properties, the Silver Hollow Bank and the Newbauer and Coleman properties, were drilled. Work was completed May 8, 1945.The Federal Geological Survey and the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources assisted in the project by determining the stratigraphy from drill cuttings and by mapping the drilled areas.The properties explored are in the hilly section of east-central Missouri and are connected by all-weather graveled roads with various shipping points of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system within 3 to 6 miles of each property.The Silver Hollow Bank, in sec., 8, T, 40 N., R. l W. Franklin County, Missouri, is in the Meramec State Game Reserve. The nearest town and shipping point is Sullivan, Mo„ which is 6 miles distant. The Newbauer property, in sec. 28, T. 41 N., R, 2 W., Franklin County, Missouri, is approximately 3 miles west of Stanton; The Coleman property, in sec. 14, T. 38 N., R. 3 W., Crawford. County, Missouri, is within a short hauling distance of the railway at Elayer, Mb. These are shown on figure 1.The region surrounding the explored areas contains a series of low-lying hills or ridges and narrow winding valleys drained by the Meramec River system. These hills seldom rise more than 200 feet above the valley floors, most of which are approximately 700 feet above sea level. Except for numerous small farms and a few small towns, the entire region is covered by a dense growth of timber and small brush. The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system, U. S. Highway 66, and numerous all-weather State and county roads traverse the area."

[The purpose of this paper is to acquaint manufacturers of various types of asbestos product's, particularly those that specialize in materials used for sound deadening, vibration damping, and filtration, with a recently invested depth deposit of paligorskite, a type of asbestos usually called mountain leather. In the past this mineral has been only a museum curiosity but it possesses characteristics that may adapt it to industrial uses. The deposit is on Lemesurier Island, near this entrance to Glacier Bay, in the northern portion of southeastern Alaska, at approximately latitude 58° 17? N., longitude 1360 05' W. The island is about 4 ½ miles in east- west length and miles in width. The property on which the deposit occurs is owned by the locator Joe Ibach, end it was brought; to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Col. George B. Norris. A Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the owner and Chris Ellingen, visited the property sand examined the open-cuts from May 7 to 10 in 1944. The purpose of the examination was to determine the approximate extent of the occurrence and to obtain samples of the material for identification end study of its utilization.]

"An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry. In connection with these activities, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence.The limits of inflammability and ignition temperature of combustible gases, vapors, and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured, transported, and used with greater safety, provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known.Many organic compounds, which until a few year ago were merely laboratory curiosities, are now being manufactured in large quantities owing to the national emergency, particularly those chemicals entering into the manufacture of synthetic rubber, a product that is playing a major role in the Government program of national defense. This re Jolt gives results relative to the limits of inflammability of styrene and its ignition temperature in air and oxygen. This combustible liquid is now used extensively in the manufacture of synthetic rubber."

"The copper industry has had a long and interesting history associated with leaching, involving vat, dump, heap, and in situ methods. The Bureau of Mines has also had an interest in copper leaching and has researched the techniques of solution recovery, particularly concentrating on in situ methods. In situ mining is a relatively low cost method and has been proven commercially successful by nine operations. It has been most commonly used for final recovery in old workings at the conclusion of conventional mining operations.This report brings together information about 10 commercial in situ operations as well as 14 experimental projects. These 24 sites comprise most of the in situ copper mining activities that have taken place in the United States. Background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, and recovery and processing are provided for each operation. Production data and tables summarizing the engineering statistics for each operation and an extensive in situ mining bibliography are included. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to summarize the documented in situ copper leach mining activities that have taken place in the United States. It was prepared to provide a source of engineering and operating data upon which future in situ copper mining activities can be based. Twenty-four different sites are discussed. These are all of the sites that are known to the authors from the extensive in situ copper leach mining bibliography developed at the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center (Appendix B).In situ copper leach mining activities fall into the following categories:1. Commercial operations with ore body preparation.2. Commercial operations in old mine workings.3. Experimental programs.Ore body preparation includes such activities as blasting, block caving, and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracing) specifically to fragment the ore body. Operations in old mine workings include those done in open pits, worked out block caved areas, and backfilled stopes where leaching is done as an afterthought to conventional mining. Experimental programs are small-scale tests of the feasibility of a commercial operation. Some of these programs did not progress to the point where leach solutions were applied to the ore.Each operation (locations shown in figure 1) will be discussed in terms of background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, recovery and processing, and engineering and production data. Information was collected from published reports, communications with company personnel, and site visits."
