This report presents test results, data evaluations, and typical system performance expectations based on wireless electromagnetic propagation measurements performed in the MAGMA Copper Company's San Manuel mine near Tuscon, Arizona during March 30 through April 2 1981. In particular, and at the Bureau's request, this work was coordinated with testing of MF prototype vehicular radios being developed by A.R.F. Products, Inc. with USBM support under Contract H0308004 as part of a system to be marketed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. This testing also employed a prototype vehicular antenna developed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. with USBM upport under previous Contract P0382223. The work was performed under USBM contract J0308012, Propagation of EM Signals in Underground Metal/Non-metal Mines. The authors wish to thank Mr. Hank Seany, Manager of Mines and Mr. Bob Zerga, Mine Superintendent who so kindly arranged for the visit. Particular thanks are given to Mr. Al Metcalf who arranged the logistical details of our underground work, and whoa forward thinking program toward improving general mine communications at MAGMA provided the test-bed context for evaluation of the prototype equipment. Mr. Jiminez's effort was instrumental in performing the testing, and he also provided a detailed understanding of the existing multi-level, multi-frequency trolleyphone system at MAGMA. the authors are also indebted to Dr. Larry Stolarczyk of A.R.F. for numerous detailed consultations on MF technology, and who was present and participated in the majority of the testing. 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND ON COPPER MINING AT MAGMA the San Manuel mine is the largest copper mine in the U.S., efficiently extracting copper and molybdenum sulfide from the low-grade San Manuel ore body.This ellipsoidal ore-shell body, with major workings located 2000-3000 feet mbelow the surface, has ore shell thickness varying between 100 and 1000 feet over a longitudinal extent of some 8000 feet, and with major & minor crossectional axes of about 5000 and 2500 feet respectively. The San Manuel mine operation employs in excess of 1000 men/shift with gross ore production between 60,000 and 70,000 tons/day. The mining operation employs the block caving technique; actively being implemented on three levels (2075,2375,2675 feet for haulage, and 2015,2315,2615 product/grizzly levels). The ore haulage is largely via D.C. trolley trains to four (3A,3B,3C,3D) product shafts for skipping to the surface. An additional three shafts at two locations are used to convey men, materials, and developmental rock extractions into and out of the mine. On each haulage level, the trains carry ore an average of two miles one-way from the ore raises to the dump points. 1.2 TOPOLOGICAL BRIEF OF THE HAULAGE LEVELS The 2375 level, on which all the testing was conducted, is illustrated in

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.

Many gold-bearing ores in the Western United States also contain small amounts of mercury. The presence of mercury creates potential pollution and health hazards during several steps in gold processing. An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop techniques for removing mercury from cyanide mill solutions by selective electrowinning to reduce the potential hazards. Sixty-five percent of the mercury was selectively electrowon from synthetic carbon strip solution at applied potentials of 1.00 to 1.50 V when using a mercury-coated platinum or copper plate cathode. Increasing the active surface area by using mercury-coated copper wool resulted in up to % pct of the mercury being electrowon from mill carbon strip solutions that contained 1.9 to 20 ppm Hg, 20 to 345 ppm Au, and 0.35 to 39.5 ppm Ag. About 98 pct of the silver was electrowon with the mercury onto the mercury cathode. Gold extraction ranged between 0 and 20 pet. Results of the investigation showed that choice of cathode material was critical to the success of the process. Selectivity was not achieved using uncoated steel wool cathodes.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs. It describes briefly the manner in which slusher hoists and scrapers are used in connection with clock-caving methods at the Emma Nevada mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation, Kimberly, Nev. Kimberly is in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, 7 miles west of Ely. The district is served by the Nevada Northern -Railroad, which branches from the main line of the Southern Pacific at Wells, Nev., 140 miles north, Paved U. S. Highway 50 from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Reno, Nev., passes through Ely. The altitude at the collar of the Emma Nevada shaft is 7117 feet. The surrounding hills are covered with a sparse growth of juniper, pinon, and mountain mahogany.

Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.

The oil yields of sections of Green River oil shale in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming are presented as part of a continuing project to determine oil-shale reserves in the United States. Oil-yield logs, based upon analyses obtained from 1945 through 1952, are presented to show the thickness and richness of 202 sections of Green River oil shale. The logs are based on analyses of approximately 20,500 samples, representing 179,000 feet of shale, which were made by the Bureau of Mines, and upon analyses, representing approximately 26,000 feet of shale, which were made by other agencies. The samples consisted of cores from a Bureau of Mines coring program in U. S. Naval Oil-Shale Reserve 1, Garfield County, Colo., and cores, drill cuttings, and channel samples provided by other agencies, chiefly oil companies. Most of the samples of oil shale from Utah and Wyoming were derived from oil-well drilling operations. As a result, the oil-shale sections were widely scattered and were not extensive or reliable enough to be representative of the significant deposits of Green River oil shale in these States. The oil-shale sections for Colorado, however, were more comprehensive, and a number of the sections were used in a previous report as a basis for estimating oil-shale reserves in Colorado. The present report does not give estimates of oil-shale reserves but is limited to presentation of oil-shale analyses that may be used for future reserve estimates. Other sections of Green River oil shale are being analyzed, and the results will be published in subsequent reports.

"REASONS FOR AND PURPOSE OF WORKIn 1924 the United States Public Health Service was requested to undertake a special study of stream pollution. At that time the proposal that the United States Bureau of Mines take up the study was made by the Public Health Service because in point of training and experience the personnel of the latter was considered not to be as well, suited to this type of investigation as was that of the Bureau of Mines. H. Foster Bain, then Director of this bureau, promised to undertake the work, and, accordingly, field investigations were begun in the spring of 1925. The problems of mine-drainage wastes and of gas-house and coke-oven waste were investigated in the laboratory, and a method of treatment by sodium hydrate and benzol was found to be promising. The idea was obtained by A. C. Fieldner, chief engineer of the Bureau of Mines experiment stations, while in Germany in 1924, where he was shown a practical application of the process, but no information was obtained as to definite chemical or mechanical processes. Because of the then pending American patent application by the German firm, we made no attempt to develop our findings further. Shortly after, a similar method of treatment was developed in the United States, and since that time we have devoted our attention entirely to mine drainage. This paper is a presentation of some general facts and information gathered during the past five years on coal-mine drainage.SCOPE OF WORKAt the time our work was begun there was such a diversity of opinion on the whole subject and apparently so little was accurately known, that it was decided to undertake a basic study from which (1) certain definite information might be evident, and (2) what might be considered side issues of the original investigation would be suggested for subsequent study.A stream in a district thought to be representative of those in low to average sulphur bituminous coal fields and another in a high sulpbur district were selected for study, A fair (weber of factors entered into the tentative selection of these streams, the chief ones being their accessibility and freedom from other industrial or domestic pollution, besides, of course, the presence of mine drainage in these streams."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to measure methane and other gases during the auger mining of coal. An intrinsically safe commercial gas detector with a built-in data logger was mounted in the center of the hollow conveying auger. A sampling head through the wall of the auger conducted a gas sample to the detector. Results showed that gas levels can be monitored on a continuous basis during the auger mining of coal and the data retrieved upon completion of the hole.

Seven samples were analyzed from the major reserves of the Bottom Red Ash bed, Northern anthracite field. The data show variations in thickness and geo-logic structure and in the amount of coal that can be recovered. Recovery of market-grade (less than 17 percent ash) coal is high for all samples, ranging from 76 tp 95 percent in the 3-1/4-by 9/16-inch sizes. The occurrence of coal containing less than 5 percent ash varies from 19.5 to as much as 57.5 percent. Crushing the coarse sizes to minus 9/16 inch increased recovery of market-grade coal in six of seven bed samples. Crushing released sufficient impurities to cause substantial increases in yield of coal containing less than 5 percent ash for all samples. Analyses of the float coal indicate that the quality of coal is comparable for all samples.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a mining machine during maneuvers in the face area of an operating mine section. The system is the first step in the development of a guidance system for automated mining machines. The position and heading algorithm is described, and a preliminary error analysis is performed. The sensors employed were linear position transducers mounted on a mining machine with their cables attached to points on a stationary reference. Four linear position transducers were used to provide a data redundancy that increased the reliability of the guidance system. The linear position information obtained from the transducers was processed mathematically via the position and heading algorithm to provide the desired position and heading information. The algorithm takes advantage of sensor redundancy to continually test the accuracy of the sensor data. The major sources of error were determined to be the linear position transducers, the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter used to interpret the data, and the sampling frequency of the measurement system. These sources of error were evaluated to determine their inaccuracies for use in calculating the overall system accuracy.

"Low-rank coals have a pronounced tendency to disintegrate or ""slack” when alternately dried, and wetted by exposure to the weather. The more readily a coal slacks the greater is its tendency to ignite spontaneously and the more care must be used in its shipment and storage. Lignite slacks very readily when exposed to the weather. Slacking trouble is also experienced in shipping and storing subbituminous coal, but not to the same extent as with lignite. As a rule, bituminous coals are only slightly affected by weathering and in general may be classified as nonslacking coals. The slacking tendency of subbituminous coal is one of the characteristics that is used to distinguish it from bituminous coal. An accelerated laboratory method of test was developed to measure such slacking tendencies. This method was applied to a number of coals, principally from the State of Washington, and the method and the results obtained are given herein.Helpful information concerning slacking tendencies of coal was received from Marius R. Campbell, senior geologist U. S. Geological Survey.Coals that slack readily contain relatively large amounts of moisture. When exposed to the weather such coals lore moisture rapidly. As the coal loses moisture at the surface there is a gradual drift of moisture from the interior of the piece to the surface. If the loss of moisture at the surface proceeds at a faster rate than it is replaced by moisture from the interior of the coal piece, there undoubtedly in greater shrinkage of the coal at the surface as tom-pared to the interior of the piece and stressed are generated in the surface coal.These stresses in the surface coal cause it to crack and disintegrate.Likewise, when the air-dried coal is wetted by rain, the exposed surface of the coal pieces gain moisture more rapidly than the interior of the piece, causing greater expansion in the surface coal and the coal breaks down further. As this process of air drying and wetting is continued when the coal is exposed to the weather, the slacking proceeds and the exposed lumps of coal may disintegrate completely."

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs. It describes briefly the procedure followed in concentrating hübnerite or? at the Ima tungsten mine, Lemhi County, Idaho. In October 1911 the Ima mill was utilizing combined gravity-concentration, flotation, and magnetic-separation units for the recovery of a tungsten concentrate and a pyritic silver concentrate approximately 120 tons of ore averaging 0.5 percent W03 is treated daily. The concentrates produced average 66 to 67 percent WO3.

Objective To identify techniques to reduce the probability of gob gas explosions. Background In the last 6 years, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many mine seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. Three of these gob gas explosions occurred in one mine in Alabama over a 3-year period. Fortunately, the explosion forces and the toxic gases that vented from the sealed gob area did not cause fatalities or injuries, but they destroyed several large seals. If miners had been inspecting or working near these areas, the potential for serious injury and/or death would have been high. The United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) help identify the mechanisms for lightning penetration into the gob and recommend ways to reduce the probability of occurrence of future explosions from such lightning penetrations into sealed areas of underground coal mines. Because three of the explosions occurred in a single mine, special attention was focused on these particular explosions. The first occurred in April 1994 in a sealed area, which enclosed about 1.35square miles of abandoned workings (gob). This explosion destroyed 3 of the 38 seals that surrounded the gob. These seals were less than 2,000 ft away from three 4.5-in-diam steel-cased test wells that extended from the surface into the mine entry. At the time of the explosion, the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)verified 12 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the mine, including several above the gob. After the 1994 explosion, the damaged seals were rebuilt using an acceptable seal design capable of with standing a 20-psi explosion, as required by 30 CFR 75.335. On January 26,1996, a second gob explosion destroyed five more cementitious pumpable seals less than 2,000 ft away from those destroyed in 1994and even closer to the steel-cased wells. The NLDN verified72 lightning strikes in the area of this second gob explosion. Compressive strength analyses of fragments from the destroyed seals showed that strengths ranged from 11 to 138 psi, with an average of83 psi. This is over 100 psi below the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement for cementitious pumpable seals. These seals were again replaced. On July 9, 1997, the third and most violent explosion occurred in the same vicinity of the last two explosions. Three more cementitious pumpable seals were destroyed, including one newer seal that exceeded the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement. With the activities of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division geared chiefly to problems directly connected with the war effort , the emphasis of the work under oil and gas development and production was to make engineering studies of selected reservoirs for the Petroleum Administration for War , to determine the extractable quantities of components in them, and to study the characteristics of these components for use in the manufacture of aviation gasoline and other products . The needs of the Petroleum Administration for War and the operators for specific data from gas - condensate fields were fulfilled , and , in addition , engineering data along lines of a forward - looking program of research on reservoir behavior were collected , which should be of great value in the postwar period . It is planned to publish many of these data as soon as conditions permit . The work of the Secondary Recovery Section had as its objectives in- . creasing the rate of production of crude petroleum and , which is more important , preventing the premature abandonment of wells in " stripper " and marginal According to the National Survey of Stripper Wells by the National Stripper Well Association in cooperation with the Interstate Oil Compact Commission , a total of 67,460 stripper wells was abandoned from January 1 , 1935 , to July 1 , 1942 , inclusive , with an estimated loss in proved reserves of approximately 216 million barrels . This survey also indicates that over 1.2 billion barrels of oil would be recovered by primary production from more than 290,000 stripper wells then in operation , and an additional 2.5 billion barrels of oil could be recovered from them by secondary production methods . The work of the Chemistry and Refining Section was oriented towards the optimum utilization of crude oils in the manufacture of aviation fuels for spark-ignition and jet - propulsion engines . The work involved intensive studies of superfractionation , hydrocarbon analysis , and the engine testing of fuels . Particular attention was given to the effect of sulfur compounds in the crude oils and in the fuels made from them . The research on thermodynamics is concerned with the experimental determination of precise and accurate values of the fundamental thermodynamic constants of pure hydrocarbons and related compounds . The data obtained in these investigations will be utilized for devising and improving chemical processes in which petroleum hydrocarbons are the raw materials . Without such data , much time and expensive material and equipment may be wasted in attempts to obtain reactions under conditions that the laws of thermodynamics rule out of consideration . Thermodynamic data are useful and required in the petroleum industry for calculations of heat balances in the design of furnaces , fractionating towers , and heat- transfer equipment . It is of utmost importance , also , to know the heat requirements of cracking and other chemical reactions so that heat may be supplied or dissipated in the proper proportions . These needs for thermodynamic data are being recognized more and more by petroleum -refining engineers . The responsibility for the production of helium for the Navy , the Army , other governmental agencies and non-Federal users is vested in the Bureau of Mines by an Act of Congress ( 50 Stat . 885 ; 50 U.S.c. 161-166 ) . The Helium Subdivision of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division continued to meet all demands for helium .

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

An industrial survey was made for the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior to determine the type and quantity of water-borne mineral wastes and the water requirements of metal-processing industries in the basin in Kansas and western Missouri. Data are presented on metal-processing plants visited through June 30, 1959. Most of the plants were in the greater Kansas City area. This report is to be supplemented with a similar publication on other industries, including those producing sand and gravel, coal, petroleum, and chemicals. In 1958, 19 million pounds of waste materials was discharged from metal processing industries. Approximately 14 million pounds of this waste was in the form of ferrous sulfate, and 2 million pounds was ferric phosphate. Galvanizing, other hot dipping, and automotive industries contributed the greater part of iron compounds wasted; some of this waste occurred as sludge that was not discharged to water courses but was hauled to refuse dumps, podium was present in nearly all industrial wastes, and the total of more than 900,000 pounds constituted one of the larger material losses. Although small in quantity, electroplating and allied coating wastes contained metals that were expensive when originally purchased.

Coke-pushing difficulties have been the subject of much controversy but relatively little scientific investigation. Nevertheless, continuing pushing difficulties can greatly decrease the life of a coke oven and should therefore be considered in the selection of the blend and operating conditions used for coke production. The present Federal Bureau of Mines investigation was undertaken to correlate results of previous investigators and to supplement these results to the limited extent practical by us of an experimental slot-type oven. To this end, pushing pressures have been determined routinely for Tuscaloosa oven tests conducted during the past 10 years. Nevertheless, the accumulated information remains incomplete in many respects, and in view of the recognized inadequacies of the data, publication is now undertaken only because of the scarcity of published information on this important problem and the discontinuation of carbonization studies with this oven.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary examinations of the Mohawk zinc prospect were made by John 14. Price and the author in July, August, and September 1943. Considerable quantities of oxidized lead and zinc minerals were found in old shallow work¬ings along two faults - one an over thrust fault with Paleozoic limestone in the hanging wall overlying Cretaceous shale and arkose in the footwall of the fault, and the other a bedding fault in the Paleozoic limestone.The chances appeared good for finding important lead-zinc sulfide ore bodies at 200 to 300 feet beneath the surface, so exploration in three steps by the Bureau was recommended:Surveying, mapping, and character sampling of the outcrops with topographic and geologic mapping of the immediately surrounding area.Preliminary drilling of four test holes, aggregating about 1,500 feet, to locate the top of a possible sulfide ore zone and determine the thickness and intensity of the sulfide mineralization.Contingent upon favorable results of the second step, diamond drilling of about 6,300 feet of additional hole to explore the sulfide ore bodies.The outcrops were surveyed and sampled, a topographic map was made of the area, and the geology was mapped. A project was set up for preliminary drilling of step 2 in the fiscal year 1944-45. An access road to the drill sites was built in April 1945. Diamond drilling was started on April 28 and completed on September 25, 1945, under the supervision or the Bureau of Mines. The exploratory work is covered in this report."
