CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.

The Taylor Creek lead-zinc deposit is on Taylor Creek, approximately 1-1/2 miles from tidewater, at the head of Duncan Canal, on the east side of Kupreanof Island, Petersburg district, southeastern Alaska. The property was located in 1903, and a 30-foot discovery cut was put to the west tank of the creek. Very little prospecting end developing has been done since that time. The property was examined by J. C. Roehm, associate mining engineer, Territorial Department of Mines, Juneau, Alaska, in June 1946. From exposure n the creek, a mineralized zone with possible dimensions of 1,700 feet by 1,000 feet was indicated. The general strike was northwest, and the dip was low and variable to the northwest. During September through November 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted a project on the property. Four diamond-drill holes, totaling 770.5 linear feet, were drilled from the surface and 280 lineal feet of hand trenching done. The mineral deposit was found to occur as patches that appear to be a replacement in dolomitic limestone. The patches of mineralization are small, irregularly shaped, and irregularly distributed. Maps showing the location of the drill holes and trenches, analyses of the cores from the drill holes, and anal lee of the samples from the trenches accompany this report (see, also, appendixes A, B, and C).

"A group of bisbenzylisoouinoline alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silica-induced fibrosis in animal models [1, 2]. The objective the present study was to characterize the binding of several of these alkaloids to phosphatidylcholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods, respectively. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, chiral configurations, and double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is a highly effective agent in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, certain analogues of tetrandrine such as curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In conclusion, the results of these studies indicate that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of this class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds. These data also suggest that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.INTRODUCTIONInhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of silicosis. This fibrotic disease is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lungs with the progressive development of pulmonary dysfunction [3, 4]. Many theories concerning the etiology of silicosis involve silica-induced activation of alveolar macrophages. Evidence indicates that in vitro silica exposures result in the generation of chemiluminescence, and the release of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from alveolar macrophages [5]. Activation of alveolar macrophages has also been demonstrated after intratracheal instillation or inhalation of silica [5, 6]. Such excess release of reactive products from pulmonary phagocytes has been associated with damage to the lung parenchyma [7, 8]. In addition, silica exposure results in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages, which enhance proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by these pneumocytes [9-12]."

The New Almaden mine was discovered in 1824, and since that date production of quicksilver has exceeded 1,000,000 flasks. Because of this high production record, the New Almaden area was, upon passage. by Congress of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, immediately considered by the Bureau of Mines as a promising location for exploration. In 1941, the Federal Geological Survey undertook a survey of the entire district. R. R. Trengove, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary study for a project in 1942, and in August 1943 the Bureau, in close cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, began the development project described herein. The Bureau of Mines drilled 36 holes, totaling 6,807 feet of diamond drilling, along the contact between the serpentine and Franciscan, sandstones and other sedimentary formations. The ore bodies are found along this contact and occur in the carbonate-silica rock. This report briefly describes the location, history, and ore deposits of the property. The recent operations are outlined, and the work performed by the Bureau is explained in detail.

"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. [Sales of explosives - permissible explosives5/ other high explosives, and black blasting powder - in the United States during the calendar year 1937 reached a combined total that slightly exceeded the quantity sold in 1936. A larger output was reported for permissible and other high explosives but a smaller for black powder. Production of the three classes of explosives totaled 404,744,294 pounds, more than 3 percent over 1336. The total quantity produced included 49,579,441 pounds of permissible, 288,924,253 pounds of other high ex- plosives, 36,403,950 pounds of black powder in pellet form, and 23,836,550 pounds of black powder in granular form. Sales of granular black powder declined 26 percent compared with 1936 and of pellet black powder 12 percent; gales of permissible explosives increased nearly 4 percent and of other high explosives 10 percent]

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers In their Resource Development Navigation Study, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) examined the potential for mineral development near ten Alaska port sites. This report presents the results for the first three sites: Bethel, Kivalina (Red Dog), and Omalik Lagoon. The mineral deposits near Bethel are primarily gold and mercury; the nearest deposit being 55 mites away. Because of the expense of constructing and maintaining a road over the poorly drained lowlands, the potential of Bethel as a port site in the near-term is considered to be low. The Kivalina site currently serves the Red Dog mine and has the potential to handle material for similar deposits in the area. Results from a lead-zinc mine model indicate that potential for additional mine development exists in the area. Coal is the major deposit type found near the Omalik Lagoon site. Due to environmental constraints, development of a large-scale mine producing coal for export is considered unlikely. A small-scale coal mine model was used to examine the feasibility of producing coal for regional use. This alternative may be feasible but would require conversion of heating/generating equipment in the area.

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has dictated major changes in mine ventilation with regard to both air quantity and quality. Requirements have also been placed on the ventilation of beltlines, gob and face areas, and air velocities on trolley haulage roads are limited. Escapeways, separate from trolley haulage roads and on an intake split of air, must be maintained continuous to the surface. These and other similar requirements have not only precipitated several modifications to existing ventilation systems but also have greatly increased the complexities of new mine ventilation planning. It is apparent that the use of computers in ventilation system analysis and design is a necessity. SUMMARY Although computer oriented analysis of mine ventilation systems was introduced over two decades ago, it has yet to receive widespread acceptance in the United States. Central to this problem is the fact that, while many computer programs for network analysis have been developed, no attention has been paid to the development of computer input data. Consequently, without this foundation, program applications have been infrequent. This thesis has directly attacked this problem and has presented all pertinent information basic to the development of good computer input data. The areas that were covered include quantity measurement, pressure measurement, fan testing, survey data balancing, and the development of a network schematic from the ventilation survey results. These discussions on data collection and the corresponding reduction to computer coding have been illustrated by an application of a ventilation simulation program to an existing mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1330, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscohonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.

In the course of, investigation of domestic manganese-mineral occurrences, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton lots of ore from properties in the Cleveland-district, Idaho. As only one of the ores was high enough in grade for direct marketing to-producers of ferromanganese, ore-dressing concentration methods were investigated to determine their amenability to treatment. High-grade ore. (38.7 percent Mn) from the Idaho Manganese Mining Co. was taken from a replacement deposit in limestone consisting of several horizontal beds 1 to 5 feet thick, about 1 mile northeast of Cleveland. The manganese minerals occur as an intimate intergrowth of manganese oxides, containing minor amounts of limonite, ?quartz, and calcite as rather fine inclusions. However, the major contaminants are claylike products of rock decomposition, which can be eliminated by thorough washing of the ore at relatively coarse sizes. The Hot Spot property is 1 mile south of Cleveland. The ore occurs as a replacement deposit of medium-grade- ore in limestone, .The sample taken by the Bureau of Mines assayed 26.0 percent Mn. The manganese minerals consist of nodules, principally pyrolusite with some psilomelane and manganite embedded in wad.' The low-grade wad, containing manganese and siliceous minerals in intimate association, was easily rejected by washing.

This paper gives results of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations of concentration of western manganese ores during the Bureau of mines manganese-development program initiated in December 1940. The data summarize results obtained from laboratory investigation of concentration of ores from three properties in southeastern Arizona . The high - grade Gray - claims lot B ore , a product of hand sorting , is marketable directly or after sintering treatment . Intermediate - grade lot A selectively mined ore would be marketable after sintering as a plus 35 percent manganese produce , but gravity concentration methods were employed effectively to produce high - grade manganese concentrates with over 80 percent recoveries . Complex association of fine - grained manganese oxides , calcite , and fluorite in a siliceous ground mass limited the recovery of high-grade manganese concentrates obtainable from the low-grade Pyrolusite -group ore . A recovery of 63.7 percent of the manganese was made by flotation in a concentrate that sintered to plus 48 percent manganese grade . The low-grade Davis ore contains iron and manganese oxides too intimately associated to permit production of marketable manganese products . However , good rejection of calcite gangue was obtained by flotation , and the enriched manganese - iron product might have value as a spiegeleisen ore .

To investigate mine ventilation problems which do not lend themselves to conventional anemometer and smoke study techniques by use of SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) tracer gas. Approach SF6 tracer gas is released in-to the air at a given mine location. By collecting air samples at various other locations and analyzing these samples for SF6, the amount of air traveling from the release location to each sampling location can be quantitatively determined. Travel time between these locations can also be deter-mined. How It Works SF6 is ideal as a mine tracer gas. It is safe, odorless, chemically and thermally stable, and it generally has no background concentration. Furthermore, it is instrument detectable at concentrations as low as 10 parts per trillion. The SF6 is generally released from a pressurized lecture bottle, and air samples are taken in syringes or evacuated bottles. During the past several years, SF6 tracer gas has been employed to study a wide variety of mine ventilation problems such as: recirculation of return air into In-take airways, air leakage from adjacent mines and gob areas, air transit times through stoped areas, airflow patterns during a mine fire, leakage of gases from an underground oil shale retort into mine workings, face area ventilation patterns, methane flows in metal/nonmetal mines following a methane out-burst, and many other problem areas. Examples of some recent uses of SF6 follow.

This report describes the design, analysis, and results of a special experimental mine-sampling project conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing program on sample-methods research. The experimental project was conducted at the Bureau?s Denver Mining Research Center and at the Climax molybdenum mine within the framework of a cooperative research agreement between the Bureau and Climax Molybdenum Co., Division of American Metals-Climax, Inc. The primary objective of the project was to investigate the interrelation-ship between sample volume, number of samples, the standard deviation of an assay distribution, and the precision required for an estimate of grade of ore, and to develop this interrelationship into a relatively simple method of application for use in mine sampling.

Tests and observations of a Diesel-powered locomotive used for under-ground haulage, in a-clay mine were made by representatives-of the Bureau of Mines .primarily to determine the composition of the exhaust gases produced by the engine under actual haulage conditions-and to determine the effects of the operation on the quality of the mine atmosphere. In addition to ascertaining these conditional t proved interesting to analyze the test, data in regard to certain other performance, characteristics of the engine. This report presents results of tests of the mine locomotive, prefaced by a brief resume of the performance characteristics of Diesel engines to facilitate discussion.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

This paper describes operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. at the Chief mine in the Tintic district, Juab County, Utah, where the outstanding problem is water control; the unique pumping methods employed are featured in this report. The ore bodies in this district occur as long, narrow shoots along fault fissures, usually in the Bluebell dolomite of Ordovician age. Oxide ores predominate above the 1800 level, which is also the natural water level. Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, silver, and gold extend below the 1800 level. The mine is developed by vertical shafts and winzes, from which drifts are driven to the ore bodies. In the lower levels of the mine these drifts extend long distances from the shafts or winzes because of the relatively low dip of the ore shoots. The mine has been worked to the 2800 level and the 18-411 winze extends to the 3080 level.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to investigate thin suppression of respirable dust by water sprays on a continuous-mining machine. Determining the importance of the top and bottom sprays for two types of spray nozzles was emphasized. Results showed, at a 90-pct confidence level, that (1) at least 70 pct of the dust was generated during the sump cut, even though nearly half of the coal was mined during the downshear operation, (2) the water sprays on the top of the boom had little effect in suppressing respirable dust, and (3) B.D. 5 spray nozzles mounted beneath the boom reduced dust at least 33 pet more than B.D. 5 sprays mounted on top of the boom. A single-cut technique was developed that gave good reproducibility for replicate cuts (coefficient of variation of 20 pct).
