The drilling of horizontal boreholes as a means of degasification in advance of mining has been tried at Jim Walter Resources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. In a joint venture with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a series of horizontal drainage boreholes have been drilled in the panels of an advancing continuous miner section with impressive results. The combined methane gas production rate has ranged from 205,000 to 680,000 cfd (cubic feet per day} with individual "in-seam" horizontal holes producing up to 332,000 cfd. The methane liberation from the ribs for the entire panel length has decreased from an average of 8.75 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per 100 feet of entry to 4.05 cfm per 100 feet, a 54 per cent reduction. The actual gas concentration as measure at the surface discharge point normally ranges from 85 per cent to 95 per cent methane. As a consequence of the significant reduction in methane liberation rates from the panels of the section, a 50 per cent increase in productivity from the section has been realized.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigations for suitable sources of high-aluminum clay for the production of alumina, the Whiteware clay deposit was examined in August 1942 by G.N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Montana District Office. This report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

A stick of explosive is a package of stored energy that can be released when needed to blast rocks, coal, and other materials; but, unlike fuels such as coal and gasoline, its potential energy is self-contained, there being enough oxygen within the package to complete the almost instantaneous reaction. When an explosive is ignited or detonated, the solid or liquid materials of which it is composed are converted rapidly into highly heated gases, which, if free to expand, would have a volume many times larger than that of the original explosive. At the instant of explosion these gases occupy only the volume of the shot hole and are therefore produced at a very high pressure, which causes the material that is being blasted to be broken or disrupted. In blasting coal efficiently the proper placement of the shot hole and the confinement of the explosive therein are both of prime importance. When these are not adjusted properly, only a small amount of the energy is expended in bringing down coal, consequently the balance of the energy tends to be expended by the emission of a flame into the working place that may lead to a gas or dust explosion. Permissible Explosives Defined The term "permissible explosive", as applied by the Bureau of Mines to explosives it has approved for use in blasting in coal mines, embraces not only the requirement that the explosive, when used, shall be similar in all respects to the basic sample that passed all the tests necessary for its admission to the published permissible list, but also that the explosive shall be used under certain prescribed requirements.

This is a study of 58 fatal haulage accidents investigated by Federal coal-mine inspectors during the period January - June 1951. The information presented in this circular was obtained by analyzing fatal haulage accidents in 33 bituminous-coal producing counties representing 11 States. The physical conditions represent a cross section off producing coal beds. Mining and transportation methods vary, from those of small hand-loading mines to those of large modern mechanized operations. These data are thought to be representative of haulage conditions within the bituminous-coal mining industry and are submitted to follow up the Information Circular 7604 ?Analysis of Haulage Fatalities in Bituminous-Coal Mines - 1950.? Coal-mine haulage ranks second as a cause of coal-mine fatalities, and the problem of haulage safety is complex. It is subject to constant change and is comprised of numerous influencing variables, which are not always obvious. The solution to this problem will not come through the application of any standard formula or mechanical approach since the inherent factors are strongly influenced by the human equation, and the chain of circumstances is further affected by expediency.

This paper describing the milling practice at the concentrator of the Harmony Mines Co. is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in the United States. For the period February 15, 1929, to June 1, 1929, the concentrator treated 200 tons of copper ore per day containing 3.84 per cent copper and recovered 99.2 per cent of the total copper in concentrates averaging 26.61 per cent copper. Milling practice at the Harmony Mines is in most respects similar to the usual practice at the average flotation concentrator producing bulk flotation concentrates. The exceptionally high recovery is due to a number of minor conditions. These minor details will be stressed throughout this paper.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research in an attempt to provide a more sound basis for recommending improved artificial support during deepening of the main shaft of the Lucky Friday mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Field measurements of closure across the short axis of the 13-by 26-foot shaft were as high as 16 inches. Elastic/plastic finite-element (F/E) analyses were made, reducing the values of large-scale in situ rock mass properties until field closure measurements generally corresponded to displacements in the F/E analyses. Resulting plots of rock mass displacements, stresses, and areas of plastic failure display the results of creating openings (shaft, in this case) in deep mines in difficult ground conditions requiring artificial support.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1940, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circu- lar 71103. Information Circular 71584, published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved during the calendar year 1940. The present list contains the information given in those two circulars, as well as approvals issued during the calendar year 1941. It embraces electrically operated air compressors, coal drills, conveyors and loading machines, electrical equipment for mine fans, mining machines and trucks, mine pumps, rock- dust distributors, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives, storage-battery power trucks and shuttle cars, mine telephones, junction and distribution boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, flashlights, methane detectors, and single- and multiple-shot blasting units. The equipment listed is not approved by the Bureau of Mines until found by inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in "schedules" prepared upon the basis of many years of ex- perience in dealing with safety problems confronting the coal-mining in- dustry. The use of such equipment in mines that are known to be gassy,. as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining.

Provide an accurate, reliable means for determining when a sealed mine or mine section can be safely reopened after a fire. Approach The Bureau of Mines performed a research investigation that resulted in the development of a mathematical formula for deriving a quantity, called RATIO, which can be used to define when a sealed mine or mine section has returned to safe recovery conditions after a fire. Research Results There were two major results from this Bureau research. Over a period of several years, the Bureau of Mines conducted six experiments at its Bruceton Experimental Mine in Pennsylvania. The experiments involved sealing the mine after several tons of piled coal had been allowed to burn continuously for 2 to 3 days. Although gas data obtained during the experiments revealed nothing significant, measured smoke particle levels were found to correlate with the stages of combustion and temperatures of the smoldering coal pile. Moreover, it was found that no smoke particles are produced when high-temperature smoldering exists deep within the mass of the coal pile since the smoke particles are filtered by the coal surrounding the hot region. Smoke is emitted into the mine atmosphere only if combustion is occurring near exposed surfaces. As suggested by these findings, any decision to recover a sealed mine area based primarily upon the absence of smoke particles is not a wise derision.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. This paper deals with roof bolting in Alabama coal mines and iron-ore mines from the time it was introduced in early May 1948 to May 1, 1953, a 5-year period. The Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. began systematic roof bolting in early May 1948 in a coal mine and in an iron-ore mine, which had some of the poorest roof conditions in the Alabama mines. After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proved by the Tennessee Co. it was gradually adopted by other companies throughout the State, until in May 1953 approximately 53 percent of Alabama's total coal production and 100 percent of Alabama's total iron-ore production, mined underground, was being produced from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the advancement made in roof bolting in the 5 years and also the amount of roof bolting that was being done as of May 1, 1953. Significant progress has been made in the coal and iron-ore mines of Alabama in reducing the roof-fall fatality rates during the past several years by adopting systematic roof bolting. The groundwork was laid through successful experiments early in 1948 by the Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. This experimental work was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co.2/ in its Southeastern Missouri mines.

Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifica¬tions, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and via¬bility of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

Three-axis ultrasonic anemometers are used to study airflow in the NIOSH ventilation gallery where ventilation in an underground mine is simulated. In this study, performance characteristics of this anemometer are evaluated and the effects of sensor orientation and sampler location on flow readings are examined. The study results provide guidelines for more effective use of the ultrasonic anemometers in the ventilation gallery.

Permit quicker, safer clearance of hang-ups in the ore passes and chutes of underground mines. Approach Develop a device that can be operated from a safe distance to explosively propel a projectile into the hang-up. How It Works The Hang-Up Clearance Module, consisting of a stand, steel disk, explosive charge, and aiming device, is placed at a location convenient for line of sight aiming at the hang-up. This placement can be more than 100 feet from the target. Once aimed, the charge is remotely detonated, and the disk is converted by explosive force into a slug and propelled to the hang-up, bringing it down. The steel disk and an explosive charge are contained by a plastic casing. A small booster which is placed at the rear center of the explosive makes up the last component of the charge. Initiation is accomplished by standard means such as detonating cord or a number 8 blasting cap. When Initiated, a detonation wave travels through the explosive, inverting and consolidating the steel disk into a large slug. This slug is propelled at high velocity to the hang-up, delivering more than 5 million foot-pounds of energy on impact.

The Magruder and Chambers copper deposits in the Little River gold district, on the border line of Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, have been known for a number of years (fig. 1). The Magruder deposit was first opened as a gold mine but has produced mostly copper and load. Records show that about 50 cars of concentrates were shipped from this property. No record of any production at the Chambers deposit is available. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of strategic minerals deposits, diamond drilled 10 holes, totaling 3,784 feet, on the two properties between December 3, 1948, and June 23, 1949. Eighty-eight core samples were analyzed, and the analyses and drill-hole data are presented in this report.

IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

There is probably no industry , trade , or art in which mercury is used but what has produced some cases of mercury poisoning . This is true of the mining and smelting of mercury , where the hazard has long been recognized . When the ore contains free mercury or the more soluble salts , and when the workings are underground and are poorly ventilated , cases occur , but there are a far greater number of cases among the employees about the reduction works . 3 In 1863 William V. Wells visited the mines at Almaden , * Spain , which were worked by convicts . He reported that the men at the furnaces suffered severely , being able to work only about one week out of four , when it was necessary to transfer them to places where the exposure was less . He states that "pale cadaverous faces and leaden eyes are consequences of even these short periods . " Mercury , like lead , when absorbed in small amounts at intervals , as daily, over an extended period of time will result in symptoms of poisoning . This is due to the fact that the mercury is eliminated from the body more slowly than it is absorbed . The frequency and severity of cases of mercury poisoning are far less with modern methods of mining and recovery of the metal than formerly . However , further reduction is possible and much can be done by both the workmen and the operators by following the proper precautionary measures , some of which are described in this chapter .

To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These tests are described in Schedule 1-G4/ (explosives) and Schedule 26A5/ (blasting devices). An explosive or blasting device that passes the appropriate tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is subject to continuous revision, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines to publish periodically the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. The present circular gives all explosives and blasting devices on the active permissible list as of December 31, 1957, and shows all changes, additions, and transfers in that list between December 31, 1951,6/ and December 31, 1957.

1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.
