This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes Federal mandatory belt conveyor automatic fire suppression system installation requirements and inspection procedures, identifies system failure modes observed during in-mine investigations, and suggests system design and maintenance upgrades which, if implemented, would result in an improvement in overall system reliability. This report is a compilation of recommendations based on discussions with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors, review of manufacturer's literature, discussions with mine personnel, and research investigations of automatic fire suppression system performance in the laboratory and in mines. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements for installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression systems should be regarded as minimum standards.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors in coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure changes in coal pillars by using encapsulated hydraulic pressure cells to measure relative changes in stress developed during mining. The data indicate that (1) abutment stresses were detected when the pillar line is within 42 to 100 feet, (2) vertical pressure increases as coal is mined in the pillars, (3) at first pressure is higher at the edge of the pillar than in the core, but as mining progresses, the higher pressure is measured in the core of the stump, and (4) in the two instances where lateral pressures were measured, they remained lower than the vertical pressures during pillar extraction. The data also indicate that the mean vertical pressure increase, 6P, in a pillar is roughly related to the percent of pillar extracted, A, by the empirical parabolic equation

It is thought that a brief description of the unique mining and milling procedure at the Doyle nine may be interesting to those engaged in small-scale operations at old mines or in working new ore body adjacent to old workings. It also shows what can be done with r. small capital outlay in working a zinc-lead mine on a small scale; as the operation herein described was begun 3 years ago with four men and it now employs 17 men. The original idea was to mine out any ore left around the edges of some old stones above the water level and to rob pillars after an old stope became filled with waste and tailings. This has been done, and the procedure is still being followed; at the same time a paying lead is being mined toward an area in which churn-drill holes have shown ore. Also, preparations are now being made to do some pumping.

Review and evaluation of all available data on the vapor pressure of car-bon dioxide at the ice point, including previously unpublished results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, are presented. Suggested corrections and adjustments to all the data yield an average value of 26,136.4 mm mercury. Indicated agreement is within plus 1 part in 8,000 to minus 1 part in 11,000. A novel pressure bomb in which a sample of pure carbon dioxide is placed and sealed by a diaphragm fluid separator and its use as a reference pressure standard for extended and repeated use in the calibration of deadweight gages is described.

Quick-Fix Blowout Stoppings were evaluated in several underground mines as an alternative to conventional ventilation control bulkheads. Blowout stoppings offer considerable savings in bulkhead construction and repair costs if the 0.1 inch H20 of differential pressure required to inflate them is available. The Quick-Fix Blowout Stoppings were utilized successfully in uranium mines in the Southwestern United States where savings in bulkhead construction and repairs to blast damaged bulkheads are estimated to equal $9,500 over the projected 2 year average life of a blowout stopping. Two types of material were evaluated. Five methods of anchoring the stoppings to drift walls were evaluated. Three methods of anchor attachment to the stopping material were evaluated. Blast pressure measurements were made in conjunction with the evaluation of the blowout stoppings.

"The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). This report is a self-contained User Manual for a computer program called SPASID -- Subsidence Prediction and System Identification. The program has two primary functions: (i) Precalculation of ground movements due to underground mining operations using the influence function method; (ii) Computation of influence function and site parameters from measured displacements. SPASID is written in FORTRAN and consists of four modules: (i) Preprocessor Module that prepares and maintains surface and mine data bases; (ii) Subsidence Computation Module that predicts movements of the surface; (iii) System Identification Module which is used to calculate the optimal influence function parameters, and (iv) Postprocessor Module for generating graphic displays of subsidence data. The last module is somewhat machine dependent but has internal documentation to indicate potential changes. All of the modules may be run in either batch or interactive mode. The manual does not assume previous knowledge of the influence function method or programming competence.

The Bureau of Mines, in pursuing its goal of extending the life span of strategic materials, conducted field corrosion studies at the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) in the Imperial Valley, Calif., to determine the optimum materials of construction for use in geothermal mineral energy resource recovery plants. These studies included characterization of geothermal environments and in situ corrosion testing. The corrosion resistance of 10 alloys exposed to 5 brine and steam process environments was evaluated using the low-salinity, high-temperature brine from geothermal well Mesa 6-1. Of these alloys, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Incone1 625, titanium-2nickel, and 316 L stainless steel had excellent resistance to corrosion in all of the process environments; E-Brite 26-1 and 430 stainless steel had fair resistance. Although general corrosion rates for 4130 steel and 1020 carbon steel were substantially higher than those of the other iron-base alloys, these two alloys could prove useful in low-salinity process environments because of their low cost. Aluminum alloy 5005 was the least corrosion resistant alloy and pitted severely. Scales formed on all of the alloys in every process environment. Calcite, aragonite, and an amorphous silicate were the major components of the scales.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted considerable research to improve life support technology for underground mining applications. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. Fourteen coal samples representing the Flag , Fire Clay , Whitesburg , Amburgy , Upper Elkhorn No. 3 , Upper Elkhorn No. 2 , Upper Elkhorn No. 1 , and Lower Elkhorn beds in Letcher County , Ky . , were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines - American Gas Association ( BM- AGA ) method , and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined . The samples tested were high- volatile A bituminous in rank , with dry , mineral - matter- free fixed - carbon contents ranging from 55.3 to 62.2 percent . Five of the samples , as received , were chemically unsuitable for metallurgical use because of excessive ash and/ or sulfur content . Generally , strength indexes of the cokes were low and all of the coals would require blending with higher rank coal to obtain satisfactory blast furnace fuel .

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties and anisotropy in properties of rolled Zn-Ti and Zn-1.0 wt pct Cu-Ti alloys containing up to 0.36 wt pct Ti. Finish rolling was at varied temperatures to total reductions as high as 92 pct. Alloy properties are very sensitive to various combinations of composition, rolling temperature, and reduction. Properly rolled Zn-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys are superior in strength to Zn-Ti alloys. Conditions are described that lead to best tensile properties. Creep resistance for Zn-Ti alloys decreases with increased rolling temperature when finish rolled to 92-pct total reduction: but not when finish rolled to 33- or 67-pct reduction. Creep resistance for 7n-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys improves with increased rolling temperature to about 480° F. Heavily cold-rolled Zn-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys have fine grain sizes and poor hardness, tensile, and creep properties, but high ductility. Thermal expansivity is markedly affected by the copper addition. Data show the anisotropy of tensile, creep, and thermal expansivity properties. Large idiomorphic crystallites of TiZn15 appear in both Zn-Ti and Zn-Cu-Ti alloys when more than about 0.2 pct Ti is present. A new Zn-Cu-Ti intermediate phase was also identified. Empirical equations are presented relating creep rates with major process variables.

Five conclusions that emerged from ADL's Contractor Noise Measurements Assessment done for the Bureau of Mines and the 7 December 1971 Bureau of Mines Contractors' Round Table Meeting in Boulder, Colorado were: ? a limited amount of good data has been obtained for characterizing the noise environment for electromagnetic (EM) coal mine operational/emergency communications systems; ? significant noise date gaps still exist; ? suitable instrumentation and data analysis methods are available for filling these data gaps; ? the immediate and most important data gaps should be filled by means of a timely field measurement effort that is purposely limited in scope and duration; ? this field measurement effort should preferably be carried out by a team knowledgeable and experienced in coal mine EM noise measurements.

This publication describes the construction of 43.64 miles of underground tunnel to be used as an aqueduct, known as the West Delaware aqueduct. In the past, the accident history of tunnel operations has not been favorable, the "rule of thumb" being a death for each mile of progress, according to the meager accident statistics available for the tunnel-driving industry. The accident experience at this project and the use of modern equipment established safety and progress records that were accepted by tunnel people as a record at the time. The city of New York comprises 5 boroughs, with a total population of approximately 8 million people, and uses about 1,210 million gallons of water each day. The water supply for the city is the responsibility of the New York City Board of Water Supply. This organization has constructed an extensive aqueduct system, the Delaware aqueduct, to convey water to the city from the distant mountain and river sources in the Catskill Mountains in the Southern Tier areas of New York State (figs. 1 and 2).

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.
