Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

The Taylor's friction circle method for slope stability analysis can be extended to incorporate multiple circles defining the slip surface in a failure mechanism so that it is a workable method for bearing capacity calculations of foundations and rotational failures of retaining walls and similar structures. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has further extended the multiple-circle method to include friction in the material strength and to utilize computational schemes such that this method can be programmed with optimization capabilities rather than being used as a graphical or semigraphical method. Some examples are given that demonstrate ultimate bearing capacity calculations of embedded foundations with eccentric loads and nearby slopes.

The uranium mine environment is characterized by airborne radon-222 and its daughter products to which miners are exposed through breathing and by gamma and X rays from the uranium-235 and uranium 238 chains to which the miners are exposed externally. The nature of the radon-daughter concentrations and the methods used to define and measure the exposures are explained through an extensive review of the literature. An improved passive track-etch dosimeter for personal use is proposed which has a measurement range of about 30-400 WLH with a 95% confidence interval to ~25% for individual detector measurements in relatively stable mine air. Some measurements of these dosimeters adapted to environmental use are also presented. A program of development for enhancement of dosimeter sensitivity and greater accuracy of measurement is outlined. Extensive gamma-ray survey measurements were made in two Colorado and three New Mexico mines. Follow-up personal miner dosimetry with LiF TLDs was done at the mine with the highest exposure rates, The average miner exposure rate measured was 4.27 mR per day, or 9.3 of the maximum permissible level averaged over 13 weeks. Comparisons are made with previous mine surveys and their value in estimating miner exposure is discussed. Some depth-dose measurements made using Lucite as the absorber are evaluated.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents a review and evaluation of existing and new backfilling materials and methods for their applicability to the problem of gate road stress reduction in deep retreat longwall coal mines. Candidate backfill materials include pulverized coal combustion fly ash, flue gas desulfurization, and fluidized bed combustion by-products from coal-fired electric power generation plants. Properties of both backfill and its component materials are presented, with particular emphasis on the unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus of backfill mixtures. Hydraulic mix designs discussed in this report include high-water content slurry and low-water content paste fills. Three gate road stress-transfer-modification concepts are proposed to reduce abutment stresses in gate road systems. The first concept, packwalling, involves packwall construction behind the headgate shield inby the face and adjacent to the headgate pillars. The second concept, gob-filling, involves infilling a strip of gob inset from and parallel to the headgate using paste injection methods patterned after a technology recently developed in Europe. In the third concept, entry-filling, slurry fill methods are used to fill abandoned gate roads and crosscut entries inby the face.

Two channel polarity coincidence and polarity difference statistics are analyzed. The signal, common to both channels, consists of sinusoidal bursts where the exact frequency of the signal is nearly known, but other parameters such as amplitude, phase, and pulse starting time are unknown. The noise inputs are dependent, narrow band, Markov processes. It is shown that the performance depends not only on the signal uncertainties, but on the precise shape of the cross-correlation functions between the noise in-puts. By using two polairty difference statistics in addition to the polarity coincidence statistic, it is shown that the decrease in performance, as well as the cost of hard limiting due to correlated inputs, can be made small.

A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. Request for a copy of the program should be directed to the Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

The object of this paper is to give to mining companies and to all others who are interested some idea of the possibilities in the treatment, by differential flotation, of lead-zinc ores of the Coeur d'Alene region and other districts. The purpose of these investiga.. tions is not to evolve a differential flotation process that would replace present methods of gravity concentration but rather one that could be applied to the relatively fine material and slime produced in the mills and treated unsuc_pessfully by gravity methods or by flotation. It is expected, of course, that the products to be obtained by differential flotation would be of much better grade than those now produced by flotation in the Coeur d'Alene mills. In view of the fact that it has been difficult to obtain representative samples of flotation feed from the mills, owing to the necessity of shipping the material wet and free from oil or other foreign matter that might be deleterious to the differential separation of the sulphides, the writers have felt justified in running flotation tests with the mill feeds in order to ascertain whether a differential separation of the sulphides could be effected. However, two different lots of flotation feed were tested for differential flotation, and the results of tests of one of these are given in this report. It is hoped that it will be possible later to test out the flotation feed for differential flotation on a large scale in some of the mills. This paper covers part of the investigations carried on by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Idaho Bureau of Mines, the University of Idaho, and certain mining companies of the Coeur d'Alene region. Although the results of the tests included in this report are not to be considered final, they indicate possibilities and may suggest others leading to a solution of the problem of separating lead and zinc sulphides by differential flotation in the treatment of certain ores.

The study area, which comprises 11,500 acres, includes the 9,610-acre Whitewater Wilderness Study Area, in the California Desert Conservation Area, 15 miles northwest of Palm Springs, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of prospects and mineralized areas during the spring of 1981. The Whitewater study area is mainly underlain by granodiorite to quartz diorite and their gneissic equivalents in an igneous-metamorphic complex. Late Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks locally overlie the crystalline complex in the eastern part of the study area. The study area lies between branches of the San Andreas fault system.

In longwall development mining of coal seams, planning, optimizing and providing adequate ventilation are very important steps to eliminate the accumulation of explosive methane-air mixtures in the working environment. Mine operators usually try to supply maximum ventilation air based on the capacity of the system and the predicted need underground. This approach is neither economical nor safer as ventilation capacity may decrease in time depending on various mining and coalbed parameters. Thus, it is important to develop better engineered approaches to optimize mine ventilation effectiveness and, therefore, to ensure a safer work environment. This study presents an approach using coalbed methane reservoir modeling and an artificial neural network (ANN) design for prediction and optimization of methane inflows and ventilation air requirements to maintain methane concentrations below statutory limits. A coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry development section, which is typical of Pittsburgh Coalbed mines in the Southwestern Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian Basin, was developed taking into account the presence and absence of shielding boreholes around the entries against methane inflow. In the model, grids were dynamically controlled to simulate the advance of mining for parametric simulations. Development and application of artificial neural networks as an optimization tool for ventilation requirements are introduced. Model predictions are used to develop, train, and test artificial neural networks to optimize ventilation requirements. The sensitivity and applications of proposed networks for predicting simulator data are presented and discussed. Results show that reservoir simulations and integrated ANN models can be practical and powerful tools for predicting methane emissions and optimization of ventilation air requirements.

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

The transverse force developed by expansion-shell rock-bolt anchors on the wall of a drill hole as the bolt is tensioned was measured by the Bureau of Mines using a device specially designed and fabricated for attachment to a universal testing machine. Load cells equipped with electrical-resistance strain gages provided the data from which the transverse force, in pounds, was calculated. Seven different expansion-shell anchors were tested, and the ratio of transverse force to bolt-tension load was found to range between 0.98 and 1.94 to 1.0. The drag load appeared to be the major cause of the transverse-force variation, but the relative effects of individual factors that affected the ratio between the transverse force and the bolt tension were not determined.

A series of explosive detonation experiments was conducted in NIOSH’s Bruceton and Lake Lynn Experimental Mines to evaluate low level (<6 psig) detonation wave propagation behavior in single and multiple entry configurations. Entry cross-sectional area varied from 5 to140 m2 and explosive weights of Pentolite ranged from 0.24 to 2.4 kg. Behavior of the detonation wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of time and distance from the explosive detonation in single and multiple entry interconnecting tunnels. Peak pressure from detonation of an explosive in an underground mine maintains magnitude for a greater distance than is the case on the surface and is shown to follow the simple scaling rela-tionship P = 702.8(W/Vt)0.514(0.65)n, where P is the peak detonation pressure in kPa, W is the weight of the explosive charge in kg, Vt is the total volume in m3, and n is the number of splits, n = 0, 1, 2, …n. The total energy, or impulse, I, generated by these detonations can be expressed as I = 1.34(W/A)0.64n, where W is the weight of the explosive charge in kg, A is the area of the main tunnel in m2, and n is the number of side en-tries, n = 0, 1, 2, …n.

In 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the 23,500 acre Garcia Mountain RARE II area (No. 5107) in the Los Padres National Forest. Bureau of Mines data indicate a low potential fur gold, silver, and mercury resources. Twenty-nine placer samples, representative of small yardages, showed small amounts of gold or other economic mineral values. Mercury deposits in faulted siliceous rocks in the Franciscan Formation occur north of the area. Similar rocks are in the southwest part of the study area, but apparently contain no mercury deposits. Geothermal and oil and gas potential is low.

This paper is published as a progress report for the first half of 1929 on the study of wining methods and costs in the Eastern and Central States. Data obtained from 25 mines using open-stope methods are correlated and summarized. Some of these mines have been described in considerable detail in reports already published as Information Circulars. In addition to the published reports on individual mines, considerable data have been obtained from other mines which were visited and studied during the course of the investigation. Many of these mines will later be described in detail in separate papers, and when the field has been covered in this manner it is planned to issue a bulletin on open-stops methods of mining which will amplify the subject matter of the present paper. Definition of ?Open-Stops?. - The term "open-stopes" as employed by the Bureau of Mines is applied to all naturally supported stopes; that is, stopes in which the excavated ore is not replaced by support of an artificial nature other than preps or stulls and in which the ore or (and) capping are not caved during the active life of the stopes.

At present, a need exists for more effective noise control in the coal-mining industry. In particular, new muffler designs with the required acoustic performance are needed for percussive pneumatic drills. Accordingly, the U. S. Bureau of Mines issued a contract to USS Engineers and Consultants to design a muffler capable of attenuating the noise from the air exhaust of a pneumatic drill. The specific objective of the contract was to design and deliver a prototype muffler that would attenuate the air-exhaust noise to 90 decibels on the A scale (90 dbA). The test drill used in this investigation was one used for roof-bolting purposes in coal mines. Using the combined approach of analysis by digital-computer program and experiment by simulated-noise tests, three prototype mufflers were designed and constructed at U. S. Steel Research. The mufflers consisted of a variety of resonator chambers and expansion-contraction chambers, and were of the following sizes: A muffler with a 3- by 5-inch elliptical cross section and about 8 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 5-1/2 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 10-1/2 inches in length. These mufflers were subjected to laboratory tests to determine their effectiveness in attenuating exhaust noise, mechanical noise, total drill noise, and simulated noise. All mufflers reduced the exhaust-noise level by about 25 dbA - from about 115 dbA without a muffler to below 90 dbA with a muffler - and thus were successful in meeting the contract objective. Field tests were conducted with the three prototype mufflers at U. S. Steel&apos;s Robena No. 4 Mine, and no icing problem was encountered. A fourth prototype muffler was designed to fit around the leg of the pneumatic drill. Tests showed that this kidney-shaped muffler also reduced the air-exhaust noise to below 90 dbA.
