"The mill at Noranda Mines Limited, Geco Division in Manitouwadge, Ontario went into production in 1957 treating 3,500 tons per day of copper, zinc, silver, lead ore. It was not until 1964, however, that the zinc concentrate drying plant was constructed. In 1970, milling capacity was increased from 4,000 to 5,000 tons per day. The zinc content of the ore is quite variable so that the tonnage of zinc concentrate dried varies from 200 to 650 tons per day.The drying plant was designed to dry 25 tons of zinc concentrate, dry basis, per hour from an initial moisture of 8.5% to a final moisture of 2%. Major components were selected so that capacity could be increased to 35 tons per hour with minor modifications.The rotary dryer is a Hardinge type ""XH-12"" with a diameter of 80"" and a length of 50 feet. The all welded construction shell is 1/2 inch thick mild steel plate with 3/4"" thick reinforcing bands under the tires arranged for operation at a slope of 1/2 inch to the foot. The 3/8"" x 12"" radial flights are welded to the shell. There are no flights in the last ten feet of the shell in order to reduce dusting. This unit is driven by a 50 HP motor through a Hamilton type CD250 double reduction helical gear speed reducer. The shell speed is 5.8 RPM.The standard Peabody horizontal air heater has a rated capacity of 10,000,000 B.T.U. 's/Hr. The combustion chamber is lined with high temperature refractory brick and is air cooled. The conical outlet section of the air heater is lined with insulating fire-brick. The burner is a type AT wide range mechanical atomizer fired by a type ""CR"" gas-electric ignitor.The Bunker ""C"" fuel is supplied by a Compower duplex pumping, heating and straining unit, including tank hotwell, Powertronic oil line heating system with a 550/24 volt transformer."

This paper reports the anodizing voltage, gas evolution and sparking behaviors of an anodized coating formed on AZ91D in a silicate containing solution. According to their responses to an anodizing current, a four-stage anodizing mechanism is proposed. At the same time, the formed coating is characterized in terms of its microstructure, composition, thickness and corrosion performance. It was found that deposition of MgSiO3, Mg(OH)2 and MgO as well as dehydration of Mg(OH)2 are involved in the anodising process; the vigorous gas evolution accompanied by intensive sparking and the corresponding negative anodising efficiency in the later stage of the anodising process are closely associated with thermal decomposition of water due to the high temperature resulting from the intense sparking on the surface of the anodized alloy; the thickness, porosity, and composition of the anodised coating on a magnesium alloy depend on the final anodising cell voltage; and the corrosion resistance of a thick but porous coating containing more silicates appears to be more corrosion resistant than a thin but compact coating containing less silicates.

"The PSI-200 is a rugged, innovative, and easy to install on-stream size analyzer. Its calibration is simple and can be done on-line, during operation. Two measurements are displayed on the panel, which are expressed as percent passing a selected size, or as any statistical diameter. These two measurements are given as two continuous 4-20 mA output signals. Operation alarms are displayed on the screen or are given as digital output signals.The PSI-200 has been used in various applications at Lakefield Research. Particle sizes ranging from 10 µm to 450 µm have been monitored successfully, with an accuracy of 1- 2%. Having the size measured continuously and reliably, optimum conditions have been established for the grinding circuit, resulting in a superior quality in pilot plant testing.INTRODUCTIONThe challenge of any operating plant is to optimize product quality, maximize throughput and minimize operating costs. The importance of particle size measurement at a grinding circuit is well recognized. Monitoring continuously the particle size and keeping the product as uniform as possible is crucial to the whole mill operation regardless of the nature of the operation.Various techniques and instruments have been developed over the years attempting to give reliable on-line size analysis data. The operating difficulties and the reliability of these equipment still present major drawbacks and none of them proved to be widely accepted.PSI-200 is a relatively new on-line analyzer. The operation is simple and of low cost and the maintenance required minimal. It measures particle size and it displays two parameters of the solids size distribution, either weight fraction of passing a certain size or any statistical diameter. Two analog outputs can be sent to a process control system and through a supervisory control loop the correct action can be taken to maintain the desired particle size (perhaps adjust the feed rate to the grinding mill)."

"The Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP), which was announced by the federal government on May 3, 1988, promises to maintain the viability of flow-through shares as a financing mechanism which has proven to be so crucial to the health of the junior exploration sector. This month, Tax Notes examines, the main features of CEIP, which will come into play on January J, 1989. IntroductionOn May 3,1988, the Honourable Marcel Masse, Minister of Energy Mines & Resources, and the Honourable Gerald Merrithew, Minister of State (Forestry and Mines) announced the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP). Under CEIP, the federal government will make cash payments to eligible applicants equal to 30% of eligible exploration expenses. CEIP payments will be available with respect to both mineral, and oil and gas, exploration. In essence, the program will replace the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) presently applicable to mineral exploration, and the Canadian Exploration and Development Incentive Program (CEDIP) which is presently available to the oil and gas exploration sector.This paper discusses briefly the main features of CEIP insofar as the program will affect mineral exploration. The comments herein are based on the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program Act which received Royal Assent on July 21, 1988, and on a discussion paper which was released by EM&R in May 1988. The bulk of the rules relating to the program will be in the form of regulations which have yet to be finalized. It is understood that EM&R would like to have the regulations in force by October I, 1988, when the oil and gas portion of CEIP becomes effective. (The rules relating to mineral exploration will become effective January I, 1989)."

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers. "With the requirements of air pollution codes becoming more and more critical, the role of the ventilation engineer in industry has become an extremely important one. The ventilation engineer must provide the expertise for the selection of equipment and the design of systems which will reduce pollution to an acceptable level. Because pollution control systems involve considerable capital and operating expense, he must have the ability to select, from a wide range of products, the collector which will provide the required performance with a minimum of down time for maintenance. This paper discusses the principles of wet collection and the forces used to separate particulate matter from a gas stream. Important factors in the selection of equipment, such as collection efficiency, horsepower requirements and water consumption for the various types of collectors, are discussed in detail, as well as the construction features normally incorporated to circumvent potential problems."

"IntroductionThe Coal Branch region of west-central Alberta has been the focal point for unprecedented exploration and development activities over the past ten years prompted by the renewed markets for high-quality thermal coal. Although mines were developed and operated extensively throughout the region from 1910 until 1960, information relating to the detailed stratigraphy of the coal measures and their areal distribution tended to be localized to individual mine sites. Continuity along trend was impaired by a paucity of outcrop restricting geologic mapping to stream bank and roadside exposures. Recent studies and subsequent publications by Jerzykiewicz and McLean of the Geological Survey of Canada (1978, 1980) have established a detailed sedimentological model and defined the stratigraphic nomenclature for the region . The term Coalspur Beds has been adopted to describe the coal-bearing sequence between the overlying Paskapoo Formation and underlying Brazeau Formation. Complete sections of the Coalspur Beds have been compiled from sub-surface borehole data and published by Manalta Coal Ltd ., Dentherm Resources Ltd. and Luscar Stereo Ltd. This paper is an attempt to correlate this information on a regional basis to illustrate trends within the Coalspur Beds."

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.

This short article is quite different to the general run of papers that are presented to the Institute, but no apology is offered because I consider that first-aid and mine-rescue work are of equal importance to many other subjects that are dealt with in our Transactions. Members of the Institute should be as much interested in the safety of persons engaged in the mining industry as they are in the practical methods of modern mining. We must not only do our best to conserve life and property by adopting every known device to that end, but we must also prepare ourselves so that we may take prompt and effective action when life is in danger, or when property is subject to loss. The need for such preparation in Alberta is perhaps greater than in most places where mining is carried on, and we must spare no effort to assemble at every mine men who are well trained in first-aid and mine-rescue work. The large area over which the mines are distributed renders central training stations out of the question, hence the need for local rescue-teams. Hospitals with skilled staffs, close enough to the mines to be convenient, also seem to be out of the question; therefore the greater need of a high standard of first-aid training for the people in our mining camps. The Government mine-rescue cars are supplied with the equipment necessary for training persons in this essential work and also for dealing with disasters should they occur. The question then arises: are there a sufficient number of men who are trained ? If so we can rest assured that what is possible to be done will be done. But if a sufficient number of trained men are not available much loss of life and damage to property is likely to result.

"There are a number of disciplines in the minerals industry for which concern has been expressed regarding the sustainability of human capital. The boom-bust cycles that occur in the industry, the trend in tertiary education towards consolidation or in some cases cessation of minerals related programs and the increasing frequency of fly-in fly-out operations can all contribute towards a decline in the number of professionals with basic skills in process mineralogy. This paper describes approaches taken by the authors to incorporate process mineralogy into three levels of education, namely undergraduate, recent graduate and experienced professionals. The primary objective in designing the learning activities is the development of authentic learning experiences that provide participants with relevant skills in process mineralogy. Selected examples of approaches used by other education groups globally to address this issue are also provided.INTRODUCTIONThe boom and bust cycle of the mining industry has trickle down effects in tertiary education in terms of the ability of universities to consistently provide high quality graduates with relevant skills. When the commodity price surged in 2002 skills shortages in critical resource related professions were reported and despite investment in skill development there was a view from employers that not enough young people were graduating from relevant education programs (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2012). At the time this signalled positive growth for engineering disciplines catering to the mining industry, however during the downturn cycles, most recently since 2012, graduates exiting from the discipline can find employment difficult and this contributes to reduced enrolments in subsequent years. From an AusIMM (Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) members’ employment survey conducted in 2013, more than half of the graduates exiting from disciplines related to mining and minerals were not confident of finding employment (AusIMM, 2013). In the long term the concern is not only how to sustain enrolment and graduate numbers but also to provide the opportunity for students to acquire the professional skills that they require to make them attractive to industry.Maintaining and sustaining core competencies in the minerals discipline is an ongoing challenge. There have been a number of recent papers on this issue presented at international conferences (e.g. McCaffrey et al, 2014; Drinkwater and Napier-Munn, 2014) and there is general agreement that one of the ways in which the deficit in foundation concepts can be addressed is through workplace development. Drinkwater and Napier-Munn (2014) presented data from a survey of industry professionals that indicated that more than 90% of respondents undertook on average 30 days of training each year of which approximately 5 days was professional short courses."

"The paper deals with the impact of fleet imbalance on a deterministic evaluation of shovel fleet productive capacity. It shows that if the fleet imbalance is overlooked, then estimated fleet productive capacity will be overrated.The paper shows that fleet imbalance inflates utilization, and care must be taken when using such statistics which are derived from reported field-equipment-hours. It shows that the utilization must be deflated by a factor called 'balancing efficiency"" in order to estimate shovel productive capacity correctly. The paper also shows how fleet imbalance can be controlled by managing idle time or downtime in an actual operation.The technique used for measuring the balancing efficiency factor is based on statistical analysis of equipment utilization."

Erratic high grade values are as common in Nature as they are a source of problems for resource estimators. In some highly erratic metal deposits, less than 2% of the drilling samples can represent more than 10% of the total metal in the blocks and they are associated with a high risk level. There is a risk of local overestimation but also of global overestimation, with the high grades being projected over too large a volume. Capping or restriction of these outliers control is being widely used in the industry and commonly applied in resource estimation for the last three decades. The primary purpose of this paper is to present and describe the most applied methodologies for restricting the extrapolation of high grade samples and discuss the results based on a theoretical simulated model. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the economical impact associated with the high-grade and the project risk profile associated with each method.

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. Unplanned open stope hanging wall dilution is a significant cost for many open stope mining operations. Significant advances in empirical and analytical approaches for estimating stope dilution have been made, however, many important factors are still either ignored or assessed in purely subjective terms. There are many hard to quantify factors that simultaneously influence opening stability and dilution. This creates a significant difficulty for determining the influence of a single variable, such as exposure time, on opening stability. Open stope exposure time has been found to be one of the important factors that influences overall stope stability and dilution. A study is currently being conducted to quantify many of the factors influencing open stope dilution. The assessment of a large comprehensive case history database of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBMS) operations forms the basis of this study. This paper presents the findings of a study on the influence of stope exposure time on open stope dilution. The study is based on applying existing empirical stope dilution prediction methods to the extensive HBMS database. Minimising stope mucking time has been recognised as a method to significantly reduce stope dilution. Factors which influence hanging wall dilution, such as drill and blasting methods as well as undercutting the hanging wall, have been applied to reduce the scatter in the database. Empirical design techniques based on rock classification attempt to relate opening stability to ?stand-up time?, however, these approaches have not frequently been applied to the mining industry. Data from a ?stand-up time? graph have been interpreted in terms of an equivalent average depth of hanging wall slough and compared to the HBMS database findings. To add to the existing HBMS database, several stope case histories have been taken from Geco mine. These cases include data from very large open stopes with long exposure times. Data from all three sources suggest that hanging wall slough increases between .14 and 0.3 metres per month for a rock mass Q? value between about 4 and 13.

"This paper illustrates the different ways grade-tonnage curves can be generated f or a mineral deposit. It emphasizes systematic discrepancies between reality, estimates and actual production according to different estimation methods and grade control programs. It does not offer a universal solution to the prediction of grade-tonnage curves. Hopefully, it will inspire caution to mineral economists who use estimated grade and tonnage data in the establishment of an optimum cut-off grade for a mining operation.IntroductionThe value of a mineral development venture often depends on a grade-tonnage curve. Statistics can help. The idea is to divide mentally the orebody into small blocks called selective mining units or SMUs. A SMU is an idealized version of the quantity of rock the grade of which will be tested against the cut-off at the time of mining. It could be as small as a truck load or a shovel load in very selective operations like some uranium mines where radiometric probing of each truck or car is performed. More typically, in an open pit operation, it will be the smallest zone flagged as ore from blast hole data, e.g. a 5 m by 5 m by 10m block, if blast holes are on a 5 m grid and bench height is 10m. Having defined the SMUs, the grade-tonnage curve determination amounts to evaluating the grade distribution of all the SMUs that can be mined in the depo sit. If we know this distribution we simply apply the cut-off to it and we get the number of SMUs above the cut-off (i.e. ore tonnage) and their average grade. .Assessment of the grade distribution of SMUs from exploration drill hole data is not an easy exercise and much has been published on the subject (David, 1972; Marechal , 1972; Huijbregts, 1975; Marechal, 1975; Guibal and Touffait, 1982). In this paper, we use a gold mine example to illustrate the influence of SMU size on the results. With the same example we also show that ""common-sense"" methods of grade-tonnage curve determination can sometimes be misleading."

"Generally speaking the usual approach for controlling dust is three-fold:1. Suppress the formation of dust at the source.2. Confine dust that cannot be suppressed.3. Dilute and remove dust that cannot be confined.This discussion will be concentrated on the second approach, namely, confining and disposing of dusty air.Dust BehaviourBefore delving into actual design principles a brief discussion on behaviour of dust should be helpful. For prevention of silicosis only respirable dust, ranging in size from < 0.5 to 5u needs to be controlled. As particles of this size have insignificant mass and momentum they follow air movements very closely. Consequently if contaminated air around dust sources is confined within enclosures and leakages maintained, strongly indraft dust is automatically controlled and capture velocities are of no concern.Dust SourcesAt metal mining operations ore is prepared for wet concentration by crushing it to mostly <3"" in size. This usually involves a jaw crusher, one or two cone crushers, one or more screens and several conveyors. Dust is actually produced only by the crushing action but it is liberated also when numerous fine particles contained in the ore stream are dispersed by surges and vibration at the discharge of the crushers, screens and headpulleys of conveyors. Furthermore, dust is dis¬persed when the slime adhering to the underside of the return portion of belts becomes dry and is rendered airborne by vibration and by cleaning floors especially where the slime has dropped."

"Keymet Mine lies on the Elmtree River 4 miles west of Petit Rocher and about 18 miles northwest of Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. A good gravel road runs through the property.The deposit was discovered in 1880 when a vein 7 to 8 feet wide was re-ported. In 1883 the first shaft was sunk as part of an exploration program which was carried out sporadically until 1897, when the company dissolved. Activity on the property was intermittent until 1946 when the property was again staked and during the next year diamond drilling intersected the vein in several places. In December 1949 Coulee Lead and Zinc Mining Company optioned the property and held it until its sale to Keymet Mines Limited in June 1952. By July of the same year work had begun on a three-compartment shaft.Early development work was concentrated on the 150, 300 and 450 foot levels but the shaft has since been sunk to I,228 feet to allow for eight levels at intervals of 150 feet. Little lateral work has been done to date below the 600-foot level.The first mill constructed to treat the ore was to go into production in the spring of 1954, but was destroyed by fire. A second mill, having a capacity of 200 to 300 tons a day, was officially opened October 25th, 1954. Present shipments are zinc and copper-lead-silver concentrates.The rocks of the area are shale, conglomerate, limestone, and quartzite with minor interbedded volcanic rocks, all probably of Silurian age. Small plugs of Devonian acidic intrusions occur 3 miles east and about 5 miles northwest of the mine. Minor dykes of both acidic and basic rocks occur on the mine property. In many of the fine-grained sedimentary rocks the more brittle laminre have been brecciated and give the rock the appearance of an argillaceous conglomerate."
