"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). "This article is based on a paper presented by Jim Scott at the 1988 annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. The paper suggests a number of factors that might be taken into account in negotiating royalty terms.IntroductionRoyal ties are a part of mining life in Canada. They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator&apos;s NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator&apos;s bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. On the other hand, the potential for significant gains under a cents-per-ton royalty is also very limited. The royalty holder will not share in any increases in the market price of the end product or any cost reductions achieved by the producer."

General Statement In July, 1948, experimental aerial photography o shallow water zones on Northumberland strait was carried out by the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. This work was designed to test the feasibility of aerial photography for coastal surveys o various types, including seaweed and bottom detail surveys. In the course of the work at Lismore, undersea faulting was noted visually and was later clearly apparent in the photographs. In order to prove beyond doubt that the lineations photographed are actually faults, a ground check was made, and terrestrial stereoscopic photographs were obtained of these features where they intersect the shore line. There can be no doubt of their nature, and the type of faulting is probably thrusting due to compressive forces. This is indicated by the successive right- and left-hand displacements on intersecting faults. The age of the fracturing is post Lower-Pennsylvanian (Lismore) and is correlated with similar compression faulting in western Cape Breton. As far as can be ascertained, this is the first time that subsea faulting has been photographed, though it is quite possible that similar structures have been observed elsewhere. Location and Area Lismore is on Northumberland strait, approximately thirty-five miles east of Pictou (see index map, Figure 1). The area mapped from aerial photographs (Figure 2) is a strip approximately two miles long by a quarter of a mile wide. Figure 3 shows a stereo-pair of the aerial photographs used to construct this map. The terrestrial stereoscopic photographs (Figure 4) show one of the faults.

Understanding energy performance of existing buildings is vital to increasing their efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumptions. This entails facility managers to systematically monitor building energy performance and reliably identify and analyze potential problems. Currently, infrared thermography is widely used as a primary diagnostic tool for the detection of building performance problems. Nonetheless, applications of thermal images for building inspection are mainly restricted to manual and labor-intensive identification and qualitative assessment of heating or cooling loss. Automated identification of potential problems and reliable cost analysis of the associated energy loss can help homeowners to minimize financial risk of retrofits and maximize energy savings. To that end, this paper presents a new automated method for calculating the cost of energy loss for building diagnostics. In the proposed method, first, using a hand-held thermal camera, the auditors collect digital and thermal imagery from the buildings under inspection. Then, using a recently proposed method for Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling, an actual 3D spatio-thermal model is generated and superimposed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based expected energy performance model. The resulting EPAR model is placed into the method proposed in this paper for cost analysis of the energy loss. Through a new 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d tree structure and nearest neighborhood searching, performance deviations between these models are automatically calculated. Using a temperature threshold, the areas associated with potential performance problems are detected in the EPAR model and are visualized using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. Then, the actual R-values of the detected areas are measured at the level of 3D points. Based on the measured R-values and the estimated air change rate for the detected air leaks, (1) the heat loss or gain caused either by poor insulation or air infiltration/exfiltration and (2) the associated energy costs are automatically calculated. The proposed method is validated on several locations of existing residential buildings. The preliminary results show the potential of the proposed method for minimizing the inspection time as well as the risk associated with the cost analysis of retrofitting potential building performance problems.

?Globalization and the impact on mine operations? is one of the themes of the 2003 annual CIM meeting. Global mining business in practice always means to act with local base material resources in order to reach the mining company?s global business goals. On the other hand these operations are characterized by cost pressure and cycling product prices. Driven by actual prices, local product markets and local production cost, one time one mine can be most efficient while under different circumstances another mine will be the most efficient producer for the same customer [PENSWICK, 2001]. Therefor in the future the most profitable mining companies will be those who have permanent ?real-time? control on their actual production cost level. Certain approaches are under way to provide reliable modeling tools for aiding mining companies in highly complex decision finding procedures. A high potential for enhancing efficiency is the integration of all single steps of the mining working chain into a production process structure to make advantage of an optimized flow of material and information through the ?moving ore factory? [WIGDÉN, 2001]. Crucial to all these activities is the ability of getting reliable, just-in-time information from the entire mining production chain. As modern mining machinery today is controlled electronically and even already operated autonomously, the theoretical preconditions for the data acquisition is already fulfilled. But up to now, there was no way of cost effectively exchanging the process information with databases, simulation tools and other enterprise level software. Any data exchange problem had to be solved by individual and expensive software development projects. To solve these problems, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched in 2000 by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ?common electronic language? for easy and standardized data exchange between mining machines and central computer systems. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automated equipment. It shall provide easy ways of using multi vendor machine installations in data controlled mining processes. At the same time it reduces cost for individual development of interfaces for all parties involved. The standard?s technical architecture is flexible and open - also for future applications. It uses modern technology enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases as well as open on line networking.

"The Premier mine; owned by Silbak Premier Mines; Limited; is 14 miles from Stewart at the head of Portland canal. Development of the property began in 1918; and since chat time a very large amount of gold and silver as well as some lead and copper have been produced from the mine.The area in the vicinity of the mine is underlain by greenstones tuffs, and sediments of Mesozoic age, belonging to the Bear River formation of the Hazelton group. These rocks are intruded by a stock 2 miles in diameter, composed of orthoclase porphyry and called the Premier porphyry. It sends numerous sill-like and dyke-like tongues into the Bear River formation, and is intruded in turn by a granodiorite outlier of the Coast Range batholith. The orebodies occupy fractures and fracture or shear zones. Primary ore consists chiefly of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with some chalcopyrite. The upper 300 feet, or locally 600 feet, contained presumably secondary silver minerals."

The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). Pressure maintenance by water flooding in the Pembina Field made consideration of wet crude dehydration and disposal of the produced water mandatory. Crude dehydration, the treatment and disposal of produced water, as well as the sale of gas and crude oil were expected to be handled more efficiently at one central point than at several conventional batteries. This plan was effected by routing the produced fluids to the central station by way of several well testing batteries referred to as satellites. To realize the full efficiency inherent in such consolidation the entire system was made self-regulating. Programming ensures the testing and proper routing of all products to their destination. Forty producing wells have been self-operated during the winter 1959 -1960 with gratifying results.

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Recovery of cobalt to produce high grade cobalt sulfate from cobalt concentrate by leaching and solvent extraction was investigated. The PLS typically contains Co 10g/l, Mg 2g/l, Fe < 10ppm, Mn < 200ppm, insolubles <100ppm and is extracted with 20wt% Cyanex??272. The typical strip solution contains Co 60g/l, Mg 0.03g/l, and was sent to the current process for the production of cobalt sulfate heptahydrate. The cobalt yield of the plant with two extraction steps was 92%, with three steps was 97% and with four steps 99%. The extraction stage used the concept of "scrubbing" in a countercurrent system. In the first stage of extraction pH was 4.8, and in the last stage of extraction pH 5.5 to promote the exchange of magnesium in the organic with cobalt contained in the PLS. Following the extraction, when using two scrubbing stages, Co/Mg selectivity between of 2,000-3,000 was obtained, and with three scrubbing stages, selectivity was greater than 6,000. The desired selectivity was reached when using a scrubbing configuration with O/A ratio of 10:1. The typical cobalt sulfate heptahydrate had the following composition: Co 20wt%, Mg < 0.01wt%, Fe < 5ppm, Mn < 0.01wt%, Cu < 0.01wt%, Zn < 0.01wt%.

The lower Middle Devonian Sylvania Sandstone occurs in the sub-surface in the western part of Mal-den township, Essex county, Ontario. The formation is composed of well rounded, frosted quartz grains with a silica content varying from 42 to 93 per cent and the grains are cemented by carbonate, constituting up to 57 per cent of the rock. This sand-stone is not a homogeneous bed but is divided by strata rich in carbon-ate cement. The thickness of the Sylvania in Malden township varies up to a known maximum thickness of 88 feet. The lower contact with the chert-bearing Bois Blanc formation is sharp but the upper contact with the Amherstburg formation (Detroit River group) exists as a transition by a gradual downward increase in quartz grains. The Sylvania would seem to outcrop in the lake bottom near the mouth of the Detroit River dipping to the north along a broad anticline the axis of which follows the Detroit River. One of the greatest threats of mining in hard coal mines are underground fires, which in the past often resulted in the mining disasters. Implementation of scientific principles of fire fighting into practice contributed to a significant reduction of fire hazard in coal mines. However, despite numerous achievements of science in the fight against the underground fires, they still occur creating a potential hazard for the miners and contributing to generate significant costs of fire-fighting operations, the temporary suspension of production or loss of longwalls. This concerns both spontaneous fires and exogenous ones. A significant decrease in the number of spontaneous fires was the result of cooperation between Polish scientists with experts in the field of new methods of fire hazard prediction and selection of new fire prevention and fire hazard monitoring methods. A significant part played here researchers from the Central Mining Institute. The original method of endogenous fire risk assessment based on calorimetric tests of coal and developed mathematical model of the process of coal self-heating allow to predict the risk of spontaneous fires and select proper fire prevention measures adequate to the involved risk. The frequency of exogenous fires is in the last few years is low, but their share in the total number of fires is relatively high and constitutes about 30%. This results from the prevention activities, carried out regularly in mines which are aimed at reducing the fire hazard connected with the use of fire-resistant conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials. Further directions to reduce the hazards connected with underground fires should focus on improving the methods for monitoring hazards together with automation of fire fighting operations.

"Paymaster Consolidated Mines, Limited, owns several groups of claims in various parts of the Porcupine district. The area in which mining has been carried on includes parts of lots 5, 6, and 7, con. 1, Tisdale township, and twelve adjoining claims in Deloro township to the south. Highway No. 67A between South Porcupine and Timmins crosses the property.The discovery of the Dome mine in 1909 caused a rush of prospectors to the district and in a few weeks practically all territory adjacent to the Dome was staked. At that time work was started on the West Dome, West Dome Lake, Apex, and Standard properties. These were consolidated in 1930 to form the present Company. Gold was produced from the West Dome Lake from 1915 to 1930, and from the Standard-Paymaster from 1922 to 1928. The total production of the previous and present companies from 1915 to November 30, 1946, has been 487,170 oz. gold and 149,342 oz. silver from 2,337,554 tons of ore."

"The Property of Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines Limited is in the Beaverlodge area of northwestern Saskatchewan. The mine is 7 miles by road north from the Lake Athabasca port of Bushell which is 250 miles north by aircraft or boat from railhead at Waterways, Alberta.The Rix property is a portion of the former DD 1 concession, obtained in 1949 from the government of Saskatchewan when private prospecting for uranium became permissible. The concession was prospected in detail during the 1950 and 1951 field seasons and a great many radioactive show-ings were discovered. Development and drilling were concentrated in two and later three of these areas, and by late 1952 enough ore had been indicated in the Leonard series and ""Smitty"" zone to justify underground development by adit-drift and shaft respectively.Four hundred feet of drift development on the Leonard No. 1 vein and the sinking of a two-level vertical shaft with related lateral development on the Smitty zone were completed in 1953. In April 1954 the Smitty section was placed in production at a rate averaging 100 tons per day, thereupon becoming the first privately owned post-war uranium producer in Canada. The ore is shipped for processing 12 miles by truck to the mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited.Until recently all of the Company's production was drawn from the Smitty orebody. In April, 1955, ore production commenced from the faulted west extension of the Smitty structure, known as the Rix 62 zone, and from the Leonard No. 1 vein.The Smitty orebody (see Figure 2) is an intensely brecciated lenticular zone bordering both sides of the Smitty fault. The breccia areas are irregularly mineralized with pitchblende, very sparse galena, and pyrite in a gangue of feldspar, chlorite, calcite, and silica, all thoroughly soaked with fine-grained hematite to produce the locally-called ""red alteration"".Tenor of the ore currently being mined is classified information. The average grade estimated, prior to production, was 0.20 per cent (4.0 lbs.) U308 per ton."

"Metal additive manufacturing has been a revolutionary step in designing new complex shapes with faster and cleaner building capacity in comparison to subtractive manufacturing processes. The ability to print lightweight alloys such as aluminum has made metal 3D printing attractive to different industrial sector from aerospace to energy and bioengineering. Of particular interest in this study, are the mechanical and microstructural properties of AlSi10Mg-200°C alloys. In this project, samples were 3D-printed in horizontal direction using an EOS M290 machine by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technique. Uniaxial tensile tests and high strain-rate impact e tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties and to study the repeatability of the process. A constitutive model is developed to predict the results of the mechanical tests at varying strain rates to better understand the high strain-rate behaviour of these alloys. Using optical microscopy, features such as scan tracks and melt pools within the AlSi10Mg-200°C samples were observed, and the microstructure was observed to be homogenous. The previously listed tests were compared to the results obtained for similar cast alloy counterpart, i.e. A360.0.INTRODUCTION A relatively new way of manufacturing parts is on the increase as rapid prototyping becomes increasingly popular throughout the world. Additive manufacturing is a process which, given a 3D model, uses metallic material in powder form to build a part layer by layer until completion (Gu, Meiners, Wissenbach, & Poprawe, 2013). This way of rapid prototyping is very attractive in comparison to other possibilities because of its ability to accommodate complex design and geometries. Conventional manufacturing methods have limitations when it comes to complex geometries, but additive manufacturing allows for increased design flexibilities while maintaining a light and stable final product (Murr et al., 2012). It also allows for a reasonable cost, especially for small batch sizes that would otherwise be extremely expensive."

Cigar Lake is one of the world’s largest high-grade uranium mines. The ore mined at Cigar Lake is milled at Orano Canada Inc’s (Orano) McClean Lake mill. The average Cigar Lake ore uranium grade since the start of mining activities in 2014 is 17.8% U (range 8– 28%). To achieve budgeted production of 18 M lbs U3O8/yr the required average feed tonnage to the mill is about 45 kt/yr. Arsenic, occurring as arsenides and sulpharsenides, is one of the major elements of concern associated with Cigar Lake ore. The leaching process is a sulphuric acid leach under oxidizing conditions at near atmospheric pressure. The presence of arsenic in the ore consumes oxidant in leaching as well as ferric sulphate in tailings preparation for arsenic sequestration. The average arsenic grade since the start of mining at Cigar Lake is 0.57% As. Further, the ore is hosted in a matrix of sandstone and clay, which results in poor settling in CCD. The average uranium grade for the balance of Cigar Lake Phase 1 ore is expected to drop to 12.5% U and the average arsenic grade is expected to increase to 1.6 % As, with an annual average peak of 2.5%. Therefore the tonnage throughput required to sustainably meet the production target will increase to 55 kt per year. Orano partnered with Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) to perform a gap analysis study to identify key circuits and equipment in the mill that would require debottlenecking. A METSIM mass balance model of the McClean Lake mill was generated and validated with actual mill operating data. Various feed scenarios were then studied, and the outcome was a traffic light table, which highlighted feed scenarios that exceeded installed capacity of major equipment and circuits. The results provided the basis for the PDC for the pre-feasibility study. This paper will outline the results of the gap analysis, the mass balance model, the feed scenarios and the study undertaken to prepare the McClean Lake mill for the change in ore quality from Cigar Lake.

Tele-operation manipulators applied in this paper are systems for the remote handling and management of pyroprocessing related facilities in an Argon cell of the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). Generally, these kinds of systems are composed of a master-slave system and its peripherals installed along the wall of the cell, with the master transmitting the user?s own motion to the gripper directly. This study introduced various considerations and modifications to improve the remote handling performance. The analysis of an operator&apos;s ability using his/her own upper arm motion range while manipulating the MSM, and considerations of its manipulation margin and the related tool modifications are also included. Finally, the test results of several remote handling tasks are presented, and an adequate operation strategy for the tele-operation system of hot-cell type facilities is proposed.

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.
