"This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

"From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. The pressure oxidation (POX) and pyrometallurgical process comprises POX of gold containing sulfide and polymetallic lead-zinc concentrates prior to reduction smelting of POX products to generate a lead-silver-gold alloy. Refined lead and gold-silver alloys are then obtained using conventional processes. Zinc and other base metals are recovered from the POX solution. In the course of POX, zinc dissolves in the solution and lead concentrates in a solid residue in the form of sulfate compounds. Sulfur forms the major iron sulfates and jarosites. In order to dissolve sulfur and arsenic from solid residues to the solution, the slurry hot curing was carried out at the temperature of 95°C within 2 hours. After filtration of the slurry, zinc was recovered from the solution. The resulting cake was washed with water and subjected to hot alkaline treatment. After alkaline treatment, the cakes were blended with fluxes and subjected to reduction smelting to generate lead concentrate containing precious metals. This concentrate was refined to obtain refined lead and gold-silver alloy. After iron and arsenic were removed from POX solutions using sodium carbonate, zinc was precipitated as carbonate. After thickening and filtration, zinc precipitate was roasted to generate saleable zinc oxide. Using this process, the recoveries of values to saleable products were 97% Au and 95% Ag to the alloy, respectively, 91% Pb to refined lead and 5% Pb to lead and antimony alloy and 94% Zn to zinc concentrate. The features of the technology is that it has high recovery indices of precious and base metals to saleable products and can be used to process various polymetallic ore and technogenic raw materials.

"MR. CHAIRMAN AND GENTLEMEN :I begin this talk by making a couple of comments which are of the nature of disclaimers.Firstly, and as the Chairman has otherwise indicated, I was neither ""born into"" nor have I spent more than a few years of my professional life in the mining industry. I mention this because many might, and perhaps rightly, consider that an added qualification in presenting a report of what the industry has accomplished. Indeed, I am not here to blindly defend all of its actions and inactions in respect to environmental control over the years. Nor am I here to seek absolution of the industry's past transgressions - if indeed that is the word. Mistakes might be a better one. I concluded some time ago that the effects of those mistakes are too difficult to assess against the sea of errors of our total society. I should mention too that I am not an environmental engineer or specialist - only a portion of my interest is involved with this field. Perhaps this permits a perspective which allows a more accurate and objective view.One further comment here. My job today, as I understand it, is to generally report upon the nature and extent of the response of the metals mining industry to control of the environment. In the case of an industry operating at more than a hundred locations and for various reasons at various stages of progress, it is not an easy job. On the other hand, I wanted to avoid the use of generalities because, especially within the context of environmental or ecological opinion and of the practice of condemnation of industrial segments, I think we've had about enough of generalities until we know far more than we do.Finally, I am quite aware that a statement of future plans to achieve environmental control does not impress or satisfy as many people as it may have done some years ago. Public opinion demands to know what is currently underway, today."

Development of the Eldorado Mine THE pitchblende-silver deposits of Great Bear lake, Northwest Territories, were discovered by Gilbert LaBine in 1930. The property owned by Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, consists of 53 claims situated, for the most part, on LaBine point, on the northeast shore of the lake. The Company also holds a group of 10 claims on Dowdell point, 7 miles to the southeast of the main group and across Echo bay. The fractures traversing the ridge on LaBine point can be readily seen from the air. Lack of overburden and the scantiness of vegetation leave rock exposures which are visible for miles. The years 1931 and 1932 were spent largely in staking, prospecting, and examination of the outcrops. A small Diesel plant was shipped to the property in 1932 and underground operations were started. Entry was made into the ore-body by means of an adit. A 20-ton mill was completed in the winter of 1933-34, and since then operations have been continuous, except for temporary shut-downs for additions to the mill. TRANSPORTATION The mine is situated 28 miles south of the Arctic Circle and is reached by an air route of 1,140 miles from Edmonton. The water route follows the course of the Mackenzie River system from Waterways, Alberta, the end of steel, and is approximately 1,450 miles in length. Two portages, at Fort Smith and on the Bear river, respectively, are necessitated by the occurrence of fast water. Transportation was one of the major problems to be solved, and Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, found it necessary to embark upon both water and air freighting on its own account. The Company now operates a Bellanca 'plane with a payload of 4,400 pounds, and a complete water transportation system. The latter was established some years ago by the Northern Transportation Company and it is still operated under that name, but the Company is now a subsidiary of Eldorado. Modern steel boats, oil tankers, and barges were added to the fleet this season. The greater part of the ore shipments are made by water, aircraft being used for this purpose only when occasion demands. Freight rates have been greatly reduced by direct ownership of carriers. For example, water-borne freight is now quoted 'to the mine at $ll0 per ton, as compared with $240 per tan four years ago.

This paper provides an overview and discussion of key aspects of operating risk valuation in underground metal mining systems, with impact on project economics, using stochastic computer modelling in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis. Mine operating risk classification and assessment for ground, equipment and scheduling aspects are presented with an overview of available risk valuation tools that have been developed in engineering disciplines. The classification is organized by keeping in perspective the mine design needs and constraints, as well as the potential economic impact that operating problems can have on an underground development and production system. These sources of cost, revenue and time delays are tabulated to enable the hierarchization of potentially hazardous unplanned events occurring during the mining project life cycle. In complex technological systems, like the underground mining systems, the decision-making process involve a wide range of uncertainties, and often this is based on subjective and qualitative expert evaluations. Whether a qualitative or quantitative analysis is conducted, it is often the case that the probability of a certain project parameter value needs to be estimated. This requires use of methods and techniques to handle subjective, qualitative measures and to combine them with quantitative stochastic modelling in order to evaluate mine operations-related issues on DCF economic performance measure parameters. Links are established between decision making and the risk-based mine planning process for evaluation of design alternatives, with emphasis on the need of introducing flexibility in mine design. Finally, challenges of risk-based mine planning and design implementations are discussed and the call for an integrated risk-based real options systems valuation (ROV) ?in? projects analysis is made.

"A novel gold deportment technique has been developed for complex copper-gold and double refractory gold ores using state-of-the-art technology. Characterization of these ores is a challenging task due to low copper and gold grades in ores, presence of both primary and secondary copper sulfide phases and variable proportion of visible and invisible gold in different sulfides and iron oxide phases.Double refractory ores are mainly composed of silicates and carbonates with moderate clay and mica, and minor amounts of sulfides and organic carbonaceous matter. Gold mostly occurs as ""invisible gold"" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulfides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Characterization of this carbonaceous matter, commonly known as TCM and quantification of gold associated within TCM, along with different sulfide and oxide phases is highly complex and challenging.Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy techniques, namely, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metal content in various species. The relevance of the mineralogy characterization to metallurgy will also be discussed in this paper."

"The Kiruna Electric System is an all electric ramp haulage system developed for underground mining. This electric truck haulage system is currently operating on three continents. This paper will review the technology of the system, existing installations as well as the economical benefits to the mining industry. The system was designed and developed to extend and exploit the economical advantages of ramp haulage. Performance information is provided. IntroductionThe Kiruna Electric System has been the subject of a number of technical papers over the past sever al years. Abstract - The often complex, erratic, and localized nature of gold is a common feature of many vein-style gold deposits. This style of mineralization is often referred to as being nuggety or possessing a high-nugget effect. As a result of these complexities resource estimation is difficult and in general, only Exploration Results can be provided or an Inferred Mineral Resource estimated from surface drilling data alone. Underground development, further drilling, and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Resources. Tonnages can generally be estimated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because it is commonly highly erratic and discontinuous in nature. The dependency of higher confidence Resource categories on development information may create a Catch 22 situation, with funding for such development often depending on the prior definition of at least Indicated Resources. There are no easy solutions to these challenges posed by high-nugget effect deposits, and it is important when classifying and reporting not to downplay the uncertainties often associated with Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for such deposits. However, in common with all deposit types, if the principles that underpin the estimation, classification, and reporting procedures are borne in mind and common sense applied, most issues can be satisfactorily resolved. This paper discusses the classification and reporting of Mineral Resources for high-nugget effect gold vein deposits within the framework of the JORC Code (JORC, 1999).

The effects of copper on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrasonic melt treated Al-xCu (x=0, 4) alloys were investigated. The densities of alloys were increased and their grain sizes were decreased by UST. The hardness and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that the amount of solute Cu within Al matrix was increased by UST. Both the yield and tensile strengths of Al-4Cu alloy were increased by UST. The improved mechanical properties of Al-4Cu alloy by UST were probably due to the reduced amount of casting defects (e.g. pore), grain refinement, and enhanced solid-solution hardening of Cu.

Municipal governments recognize the importance of aggregates in the local economy and the need to manage this resource in the interest of the public good. They have encountered problems with regulating the industry and the dichotomy between the urban need and the rural source. They have suffered from a lack of financial benefit, an adequate aggregate inventory, provincial strategy, economic information and public understanding. A provincial strategy for ensuring the availability of aggregate supplies to developing areas of the Province is essential. The Province should also be responsible for licensing, research, technical expertise on rehabilitation, public education and financial assistance. Upper-tier municipalities (regions or counties) should assume responsibility for resource management, including resource availability, demand characteristics, truck routing, phasing of resource development and sequential land-use planning. Area municipalities (towns and townships) can best determine the social and environmental impact of a specific aggregate development proposal and should therefore have the primary responsibility for the location of new pits and quarries. They should also have the authority to supplement provincial regulations concerning operating standards and the phasing and standards of site rehabilitation.

The objective of this work was to understand the mechanisms of action of additives, such as thiourea, that enhance gold leaching in thiosulfate solution. The leaching reaction and surface passivation were investigated using linear sweep voltammetry. Leaching currents were determined using analysis of current-potential curves and the mixed potential theory. The gold-electrolyte interface was further characterized with surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The results show how thiourea prevents formation of oxysulfur compounds, which passivate the gold surface. Other molecules such as 3- m ercaptopropionic acid and L-cysteine were also studied as possible additives to prevent passive layer formation.

The hydraulic air compressor (HAC) is driven only by water, held up by a dam, to create relatively low head (typically 10-20 metres), such that the developed hydropower is used to cause flow in openings deeper underground. Air is entrained in the water at the inlet to the sub-surface openings (an air to water volume ratio of 1:1 is reported to be optimal) and is compressed as it is carried along by the deepening water flow. At depth, and with lower water velocities arising from larger cross sectional area tunnels, air bubbles separate out of the water flow and are collected in a receiver space above the flowing water. Water, free of air, then passes back up a return shaft (up-pipe) and rejoins the river or stream flow. In principle, an HAC can produce any pressure and flow rate required, given large enough shafts and enough water supply with head sufficient to overcome frictional resistance in the sub-surface tunnels. Practically, as air solubility in water increases with pressure, HAC installations with depths greater than 100 metres may lead to higher rates of compressed air loss, without special separation measures. A modern HAC application for mine refrigeration and cooling is presented.

THREE OF the gold mines in the Red Lake Camp operates fluid bed roasters in their milling circuits. The mines are Campbell Red Lake, Cochenour Willans, and Dickenson. The roasters are used for the autogenous roasting of a flotation concentrate for subsequent gold recovery by cyanidation. Cochenour and Dickenson operate single stage reactors, whilst Campbell use a two-stage system. Ore treated by the mines is similar in that the major part of the gold is associated with arsenopyrite. Other sulphides present are pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite and sphalerite. Gangue minerals are mainly quartz, with carbonates and talc. Mineralization is, for the most part, extremely fine, and there is intimate association between sulphides and quartz, so much so, th at a picked specimen of apparently massive arsenopyrite will frequently contain as much as 80 per cent gangue. This paper discusses a unique dynamic solution for optimizing comminution area in real time. The proposed technology is a combination of model predictive controller, optimization methods and real-time digital twin for mineral processing. For grinding area, the ultimate goal of an effective control strategy is to maximize the mineral processing, reduce energy consumption and stabilized size classification. To have a continuous and effective comminution operation, a reliable control system that minimizes the need for human intervention is necessary. The implemented advanced control strategy for comminution area consists of two layers in hierarchical structure. The lower layer objective is to stabilize the process stabilization using model based predictive controller (MPC) technique. The unique MPC used in this layer is called BrainWave™ chosen for its robustness, convergence and delay handling; furthermore, the developed platform offers stable and repeatable solution and has short implementation time. The upper layer is a supervisory control, which sends the preferred process operation points to the lower layer to drive the process towards optimal performance. The goal of this layer is to optimize the process targets, as well as making decision. To increase process performance, automatic ore characteristic adaptations are implemented in this layer. A digital twin of comminution area is built in the second layer that runs amongst the process in parallel. By communicating, the process data in real time, a virtual densitometer is built that is being used in our advance process control strategy. Our control strategy has been developed, tested and implemented in various areas of a copper concentration plant. The targets for implementing advance process control are usually increased throughput, decrease energy consumption and variability reduction in particle size distribution. Overall, the results showed in different mine sites are increase throughput between 2 and 5%, specific energy consumption reduction about 15% and process variability reduction up to 60%. In this paper we discuss the results of the recent implementation of this technology on Minera Los Pelambres, Minera Collahuasi and CAP Minería. Their concentrator plants have installed control systems with the most updates optimization features, for SAG mill, ball mills and thickeners.
