"This paper describes mining conditions in the Kaiser surface and underground coal mines in the Sparwood area of southeastern British Columbia. Mining methods are explained, major mining equipment is listed and production rates are given. Reclamation methods and results are described. Data are given on safety organization, safety practices, accident statistics, safety inspections and absenteeism. IntroductionThe coal mines of Kaiser Resources Ltd. are located in the southeast corner of British Columbia. All present mining is in the Sparwood area, where operations began in 1900 with the opening of the Michel underground mines. Production increased rapidly at first, then went through successive periods of depression and prosperity. Following are the highlights. Quantities are in clean, short tons. 1900 1910-Rapid rise in production to a peak of 512,000 tons in 1910.1911-1924-Reduced rate of production, averaging 238,000 tons per year, due to strikes, manpower shortage during World War 1 and post-war depression.1925-1929-Second prosperous era, with production climbing to 383,000 in 1929.1930-1933-Second depression-production falling to 231,000 in 1933.1934-1942-Third era of prosperity-production recovered and new production peak of 908,000 tons reached in 1942 during World War II.1943-1956-Corttinued prosperity, with production averaging 720,000 tons per year.1957-1959-Loss of markets to oil and gas; production dropping to 517,000 tons in 1959.1959-1969-Recovery due to new coal market in Japan; production climbing back to the 900,000-ton level.197D-Present-Jump in production reaching 6.6 million tons in 1975. This was the result of the purchase of the property by Kaiser Steel, who negotiated a large-volume, long-term contract with Japan, built the coal port of Westshore, reduced shipping costs by instituting unit trains, and reduced production costs by investing in large-scale mining machinery and a new preparation plant."

Waste waters and industrial effluents containing toxic heavy metals such as Pb, Hg, As and Cr, beyond permissible limits (0.1 ppm, 0.01 ppm, 0.02 ppm and 0.05 ppm, respectively) (WHO, 2011), pose serious threats to the ecosystem, when discharged into the environment. It thus becomes imperative to monitor the concentration of the toxic heavy metals and treat them before discharging. In this study with the above objective in mind, a microbial sensor has been developed using P. aeruginosa cells drop coated onto a carbon paste electrode (CPE) for the detection of Pb(II) ions in aqueous solutions. Detailed biosorption experiments confirmed that complete bioremoval of lead could be achieved using P. aeruginosa cells under optimum conditions of pH and biomass loading. For the electro-analytical determination, the Pb(II) ions were initially preconcentrated on the P. aeruginosa modified CPE, reduced and then anodically detected with oxidation of Pb0 using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) technique. All the experiments were carried out in the presence of 0.1 M sodium acetate buffer and KNO3 as background electrolyte. The parameters namely pH, scan rate, biomass loading, deposition potential, deposition time and concentration of Pb(II) ions were optimized for the biomass modified CPE, to obtain maximum voltammetric response. Under the optimized conditions of pH 5.6, scan rate of 0.008 V/s, biomass content of 1.7–1.8×109 cells/mL, deposition potential of –1.2 V, and deposition time of 500 s, the developed microbial sensor showed a linear response for the peak current between 0.5×10-5 M and 1×10-8 M of Pb(II) ions with the R2 value of 0.9979. The lowest limit of detection (LLOD) was determined as 2.4×10-7M of Pb(II) ions (0.05 ppm). The redox mechanisms of Pb(II) ions on the P. aeruginosa modified CPE surface are discussed.

Micromixing of the fluid and the particulate phases in a continuous gibbsite precipitator was investigated for three different micromixing states, namely maximum mixedness (MM), complete segregation (CS), and maximum mixedness of the fluid but complete segregation of the particulates (MMF-CSP). The influence of the micromixing on continuous precipitation of gibbsite was studied at different precipitation conditions via simulation. Three different cases were considered with respect to the precipitation kinetics: (1) gibbsite secondary nucleation is favoured with slow crystal growth and agglomeration rates; (2) gibbsite crystal agglomeration and growth are dominant mechanisms with secondary nucleation suppressed; and (3) gibbsite crystal growth is the only relevant phenomenon. Simulation results for the cases (1) and (3) showed that the crystalline products for both the MM and MMF-CSP micromixing states were very similar, but the product obtained from the CS micromixing state was considerably different. This indicates that at those precipitation conditions the fluid micomixing has the dominant effect on the product properties, and the particulates micromixing effect is insignificant. However, when operated under the conditions of fast crystal growth and agglomeration kinetics, i.e. case (2), both the fluid and the particulates micromixing were found to affect the precipitation process, resulting in a significantly different product. "Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. "During early 1980, pre-production work commenced at the ""Les Mines Gallen"" project, north of Noranda, Quebec. As a result of the acid mine water associated with this property, a major pre-production phase included the installation of a water treatment plant to render the water environmentally suitable.This paper emphasizes the planning, installation and operational factors of the treatment plant necessary to the success of the mining operations and the maintaining of a clean environment.Introduction,T he Gallen Project is a zinc, gold and silver open-pit mining operation approximately 10 kilometres north of Noranda, Quebec. This property has a long history, with initial diamond drilling done in the early 1930s and underground mining taking place between 1953 and 1962. This property was reactivated in 1980, with production scheduled a t a rate of 45,000 ton s per month.Included in the reactivation plans for the property was the installation of a water treatment plant to treat the acidic mine water.Plant DesignThe requirements for the Gallen water treatment plant were two-fold. Firstly, it was necessary to neutralize the acid water and secondly to produce a sludge containing metal hydroxides and sulphates which would be stable when stored, and a clarified overflow meeting governmental regulations to be discharged to the environment.The flow sheet (Fig. I) will explain the process in treatment of the acid water.Acid mine drainage is treated with lime to increase the pH to 9.50. Metals in solution are precipitated as metal hydroxides and the 504 as calcium sulphate. The precipitate slurry is then aerated to convert ferrous iron to ferric iron, which is more stable for storage and disposal.The precipitate is next flocculated with a polymer flocculant and settled in the thickener to produce a sulphate/Hydroxide sludge and a final effluent discharged to the environment."

"This paper aims to overview some mechanical and physical features of the gabbroic rocks. The study has two phases: filed study/in-situ measurements and laboratory work. During the field studies, rock block samples were collected from different locations of the study area to represent the different types of the gabbroic rocks. Either core or rock samples for various tests were prepared from rock samples taken to the laboratory. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), indirect tensile strength (ITS), point load index (PLI), Schmidth hammer rebound value (SHV), slake durability index (SDI), sonic velocity (SV) and unit weight (UW) test were carried out either on the selected rock block samples or core samples.INTRODUCTIONThe geology of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been divided into three major rock units (Lippard et al., 1986); an autochthonous succession, allochthonous units composed mainly of Mesozoic rocks and include the Sumeini Group (concomittent slope sediments), Hawasina Complex (basinal sediments) and the Semail ophiolite nappe (massive slice of former oceanic crust), that were emplaced as a series of thrust nappe in the Late Cretaceous and Neo-autochthonous sequence of Maastrichtian and Lower Tertiary sediments.The Semail Ophiolite (600 km long and up to 150 km wide) is thought by some authors (Glennie et al., 1990) to have been generated along a subduction related back-arc spreading axis during the Cenomanian-Turonian and was obducted onto the Arabian continental margin during the Campanian. Others, however, consider it to represent a primitive arc-spreading center related to oblique subduction Lippard et al., 1986). The Ophiolitic rocks in the study area comprise mantle and crustal sequences. The mantle peridotite and crustal gabbros are the dominant rock types of the exposed Semail Ophiolite north of the Hatta zone. This paper is only concentrated on the gabbroic rocks."

Difficult operating and mining conditions such as low visibility, difficult roadbeds, fast cycling, small openings, and sharp corners create high demand for LHD manoeuvrability and operator dexterity. Operator experience and patience is especially solicited to fill the bucket rapidly and efficiently and performance can be particularly affected by the skill level of individual operators. Teleoperation and automated loading are viewed as options to improve overall equipment and operation performance in certain mining conditions. Comparative statistical measurements of autoloading performance in different production environments at Noranda demonstrate an increase in bucket filling efficiency and a reduction in filling variance, allowing LHD operation to be more consistent and within manufacturer specifications. Consequential cost savings and productivity increases are demonstrated to be transferable to other mining situations.

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

In this study, homogeneous (unseeded) precipitation of nesquehonite (MgCO3.3H20) by the reaction of MgC12 with (NH4)2CO3 in supersaturated solutions at 30 °C was investigated. Factors which influence the precipitation of MgCO3.3H20, such as initial concentration, temperature, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied. SEM images show that the initial concentration and titration speed have significant effect on nesquehonite's crystal morphology and particle size. In addition, stirring speed and equilibration time also have some influence on its properties. With the optimization of operating conditions, the crystals can grow up to a length of about 40µm and a width of 5µm, indicating good filtration properties. High purity nesquehonite obtained in this study was calcined to produce highly pure MgO at 800 °C as shown by XRD results. The novel process may be used to separate Mg and Li from high Mg/Li ratio brines in Qinghai, China.

The production of single crystal (SX) turbine blades represents the current stateof- the-art in Ni-based superalloy design. With complex casting processes and alloy composition modifications, SX superalloys exhibit superior high temperature mechanical properties to their polycrystalline counterparts. Stresses and plastic deformation can occur in SX nickel-base superalloy engine components at various stages during their manufacture and use. For examples, stresses are created during initial solidification and also during solid state processing such as shot peening, grit blasting, blending, electrodischarge machining and welding. Stresses may also be created during service due to random events such as foreign object impacts. Subsequent exposure of SX to high temperatures during solution heat treatment and brazing repair can result in recrystallization which has been shown to be detrimental to both creep rupture strength and fatigue performance of the components. It is therefore the objective of this paper to understand the recrystallization behavior of two SX superalloys, PWA 1484 and 1483, subjected to pre-stressing and subsequent heat treatments.

The disturbed natural rock mass tends to equilibrium state accompanying with non-equilibrium evolution process which has significant influence on the long-term stability of engineering structure. The deformation development in the non-equilibrium evolution is determined by two intrinsic processes, trend to equilibrium and damage development, which can be illustrated by evolution of excavated tunnel. Thus the creep and damage must be taken into account in study of non-equilibrium evolution process. Within Rice’s irreversible thermodynamics with internal state variable (ISV), the conjugate force function which equals to zero is a convex surface which divide the stress space into two parts, called equilibrium and nonequilibrium stress space respectively. The concept of effective stress of non-equilibrium has been proposed, in which the stress difference (d - d ) are the effective driving forces of non-equilibrium evolution process with hardening and damage effective. The formulations of inelastic strain rate and energy dissipation rate have been recast in the form of effective stresses. The inelastic complementary energy (ICE) is proposed to measure intensity of non-equilibrium evolution of material system. The specific equations of conjugated forces and kinetic equations of internal state variables are presented. The ICE and rate of energy dissipation are all calculated to be used to evaluate long-term stability of geo-engineering. The results show that rate of energy dissipation may be more convenience and flexible than ICE for internal state variable constitutive equation of rock mass.

"The Noranda Continuous Smelting Process at the Home smelter was commissioned in March 1973. The ability of the process to handle a wide variety of feed materials and a steady stream of technical innovations in recent decades has served to maintain the Home as an efficient and versatile custom smelter. This paper reviews recent technological development and capabilities in areas such as sampling and preparation of secondary and complex materials, as well as the smelting and related environmental control issues. Future trends and improvements are also addressed.IntroductionThe Noranda Home smelter commenced operations in 1927. It was originally designed to treat 910 tonnes per day of copper concentrates and ores coming from the new Home mine site. In the 19305, the company opened its doors to other mines in northwestern Quebec. Treatment of feed materials on a custom basis has, therefore, always been an important factor in the operation of the Home smelter. Throughout the years, the Home gradually increased its custom smelting capacity, while maintaining its production from the Home mine. By the early 1950s, 65% of the materials processed was from outside customers, and by 1974, this figure had increased to more than 85% . With the closure of the Home mine in 1976, the company extended its smelting operations beyond ore and concentrate, and began to treat more scrap metals and residues rich in copper and precious metal content.Corresponding with the ever-changing pattern of feed sources, the Home smelter has adopted technological improvements to meet new and challenging business conditions. The technology of the original smelter of 1927has been completely replaced over the years in the quest for improvement. One of these major changes occurred in 1973 with the start-up of the Noranda Process Reactor. This extremely efficient smelting system has been exploited to treat a wide variety of copper and precious metal (PM) containing custom materials. This paper reviews recent developments and improvements achieved at the Home smelter, in the receiving, sampling and treatments of copper and PM scrap and secondaries, with particular emphasis on the development of new technology and equipment in complex feed materials treatment."

"A locked cycle flotation test was done on a sample from the ovoid portion of the Voisey 's Bay copper-nickel sulphide ore. The chemical conditions for this test were generated by prior independent testing. In this test work the time in each of the five separation stages was optimized prior to executing the locked cycle test. A numerical simulation of the continuous circuit material balance was done prior to the locked cycle test. The test results were not fully satisfactory because the flotation of pyrrhotite in the bulk rougher and cleaner stages was not consistent. The preliminary indication was that the samples had oxidized to varying degrees during storage.INTRODUCTIONINCO has performed batch laboratory flotation testing on ore from Voisey's Bay which is a mixture of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Earlier, Lakefield Research was contracted by Diamond Field Resources to test the ""flotability"" of the ore, which included a pilot plant trial. INCO's J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory has repeated many of the batch tests that Lakefield did to verify their results. Based on their own work, INCO has modified the circuit proposed by Lakefield Research. The modified circuit is based on batch test work, but no locked cycle test (LCT) was done. It is believed that this circuit will produce a copper concentrate at 29-30% copper and a primary nickel concentrate at 15-20% with recoveries of 80% or above.For several years the University of Toronto has been working with INCO to provide ""hands on"" experience for undergraduate students as an Industrial Research Project (IRP). This year, the objective for IRP was to optimize the time for each of the five separation stages for the Voisey's Bay ore then to numerically and experimentally simulate the material balance for a continuous circuit."

ABSTRACT: The current study analyzes the feasibility of an odd operation: to obtain, using a properly tailored drilling and blasting scheme, blocks suitable for the production of dimension stone from tunnel driving. Clearly, a compromise must be found between the rate of progression and the achievement of workable blocks. As a case study, a civil work under consideration in northern Italy was examined. The work was planned to cross a conglomerate that has traditionally been locally exploited for the production of highly prized paving and lining stones with excellent strength and aesthetic features. Natural exposures and mined-out quarries were available for tests. The relevant rock data are given, blast designs are shown (within the limitations of contour accuracy), and the test program is described.

THE operating advantages of the longwall retreating system of mining, as opposed to longwall advancing, have been well known for many years. Although retreat walls have been successfully worked in the past in some of the collieries of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, Picton and Cumberland areas, the adoption of longwaIl retreating as the general sys-tem of mining has not been attractive in the Sydney field, due to the time and expenditures required to drive roadways to the boundary. In addition. difficulties in maintaining effective ventilation on the faces, especially under conditions of low barometer, have made the operators in the field hesitant to adopt this as the general system of mining. The development of a machine capable of rapid entry drivage has made possible the driving of the necessary road ways to the boundary at a moderate cost, completely changing the picture and making a retreat system more attractive.

"Several grinding mill dynamic simulators have been developed in the last half-century. However, complete circuit simulations are mainly limited to academic investigations, and on-site applications for advanced control or real-time optimization are scarce. One particular issue that has certainly curbed a more widespread use is the time and efforts required for model calibration. This paper illustrates this challenge and presents a calibration method based on dynamic simulation using industrial data and laboratory testwork. The simulator models discussed originate from the work of Austin and Luckie (1972) for grinding mills, and Plitt (1976) for hydrocyclones. A two-stage approach based on a least squares minimization allows determining calibration parameters values. Firstly, laboratory testwork are required for characterizing breakage coefficients of the ore. Secondly, step change responses and their simulation— effect of ore and water feed rates on output flow rates and size distributions—allows identifying transport/mixing conditions. Simulation results are in agreement with actual process responses to variations of feed conditions obtained from a plant survey.INTRODUCTIONDynamic models for grinding circuits has been intensively studied since the 1970's notably by Austin and Luckie (1972b), Klimpel and Austin (1984), Rogovin and Hogg (1988), Napier-Munn et al. (1996), Liu and Spencer (2004), and King (2012) among others. The resulting models primarily serve in simulation applications for process equipment sizing, which incidentally also helps developing a better understanding of comminution operations. An obstacle curbing a more widespread and targeted use of grinding simulation for process control and optimization purposes is the time and efforts required for dynamic model calibration. It remains a cumbersome task that is typically not well detailed in technical papers. This could explain why dynamic process simulators are mainly confined to academic applications."

What are the elements that should be taken into consideration in the design and implementation of modern automation systems in a control room? Both industry and international standards are now demanding that Human Factors be considered as part of the design of control rooms to maximize efficiency and minimize the potential of human error which can lead to downtime and a loss of profit as a result of interruptions in production. As the current workforce ages and the younger generation matures, this is also becoming a key element when planning a control room. New standards are helping to address some of these challenges that are facing the mining industry today. With an increased focus on the operator, an intelligent and ergonomic workspace can both mitigate risk and optimize production. Optimization is money. We will examine how to analyze and implement innovative control room planning to maximize mineral processing production and minimize risks that can impact overall production and profit.INTRODUCTIONIn this day and age, optimization of production in an industrial environment is becoming more and more of a challenge. With ever changing technology as well as other external factors, this can be especially daunting. There are several key elements that may not be immediately obvious when planning a control room design or renovation, most notably the role of the human in this environment. Fatigue, stress, distraction, reaction times and situational awareness are all critical in a 24/7 environment. With the growing need to include human factors when considering and designing an optimal work and production environment, it is becoming even more important to design a control room that can address as many of today’s challenges as possible.The standard definition of the word “optimization” is “an act, process or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional or effective as possible.” (www.merriam-webster.com). If we apply this to business, what it really means is finding the most cost effective way to achieve the highest level of performance while considering constraints, both external and internal, by maximizing the desired factors and minimizing undesired ones. Sometimes, however, we can get caught up in the day to day processes, without taking a moment to step back and objectively review what it is we need to achieve, and more importantly, the steps that can facilitate our success."

"In order to investigate anisotropic characteristics of Boryeong shale in Korea, which clearly shows transverse isotropy, a series of experimental tests were carried out. Using Brazilian test, five elastic constants and tensile strength of the shale were evaluated. Elastic constants were determined by iterative procedure and in order to perform this procedure, constitutive model was modified to fit the experimental condition. The anisotropic ratios of elastic constants were evaluated and the applicability of the methodology was assessed. Apparent Brazilian tensile strength profile was investigated and the ratio of the maximum to minimum tensile strength was estimated. Results showed that the tested rock type had low to moderate anisotropic characteristics.INTRODUCTIONMechanical, thermal and hydraulic characteristics of many rocks vary according to direction, which is known as inherent anisotropy, and it is originated from stratified and/or foliated structure of intact rock and discontinuity of rock mass. Anisotropy is one of the long standing issues of rock mechanics field and it has to be taken into account in several engineering fields such as civil, mining and petroleum engineering. An anisotropic medium has 21 independent elastic constants without any assumption of symmetry. If a material has any symmetry, the number of elastic constants required to define its behavior reduces and eventually two constants are necessary if it has complete symmetry, which is known as isotropy. In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.
