The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and demand for higher performance end products expands. The Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process uses highly selective SuperLig® resins to remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in the mining and metals processing and recovery industries. MRT separation processes efficiently produce high purity metal products. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery at mg/L to multiple g/L concentration levels are presented and discussed. Specific examples in the precious metal, nickel, cobalt, zinc, copper, and rare earth industries are given.

"The past several decades have seen a steady increase in the use of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground mines as sensor technology has advanced and costs for this technology have decreased. The AMS is a reliable tool for early mine fire warning by detecting gaseous products of combustion in underground mines. During a mine fire emergency, mine decision makers rely heavily on the prompt and accurate knowledge of the ventilation and fire situation in the mine, such as fire location, fire size, and the spread of smoke to make effective and efficient decisions on firefighting strategies and miner evacuation. Meanwhile, a prediction of the potential for fire development at a later time, such as whether the currently designated mine escapeways will be contaminated by smoke and toxic gases with the progress of the fire, is critical for effective decision-making to save lives that are in danger. The AMS monitoring data, including carbon monoxide (CO) concentration, airflow rate, smoke, etc., can provide information as to whether the smoke has reached the locations where AMS sensors are installed and if a mine-wide smoke spread has occurred. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has undertaken a task to integrate real-time AMS monitoring data with the mine fire simulation program, MFIRE, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke and toxic gas in a ventilation network based on the real-time AMS data. This paper reports the developed real-time method for characterizing the size and location of an underground mine fire and for predicting the spread of contaminants throughout the mine ventilation network using sensor data from the AMS.INTRODUCTIONNIOSH conducts research to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in underground mines. The advancement of senor technology and the increasing demand for real-time mine parameters monitoring have led to extended applications of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground mines worldwide. In the United States, AMS is primarily used for early mine fire warning by detecting carbon monoxide (CO) in fire hazard areas, such as belt entries. Mine fires can grow rapidly, and time is the critical element. Prompt detection, timely and accurate warnings to those miners potentially affected, and a proficient response by underground miners can have a tremendous impact on the social and economic consequence of a small underground mine fire (Conti et al., 2005). The early detection of a mine fire could gain time for the first responders to put out the fire before it develops into a disaster. An AMS system with CO sensors has especially played an important role in the early detection of mine fires. The continuous monitoring of an underground mine atmosphere with an AMS could generate a large amount of data in a mine fire event. However, the current application of AMS is mainly limited to sending out an alarm when monitored CO concentration exceeds a certain level. An opportunity arises as to whether these data can be further used in fire emergency response. In order to make effective decisions on firefighting strategies, mine workers’ seeking refuges, evacuation and escape, and the timing on when to send rescuers, decision makers need accurate and timely knowledge of the ventilation and fire situation in the mine. Information about the fire intensity, where in the mine the smoke and toxic gases have spread, and whether designated mine escapeways have been compromised by smoke and toxic gases from the fire would greatly increase the effectiveness of these decisions. However, the monitored AMS data only provides atmospheric conditions in the vicinity of sensor locations. What is concluded from the monitored AMS data highly depends on the decision makers’ capability and experience. Predictive insight into fire growth and smoke transport would greatly help decision makers during a fire emergency."

Development of a new hydrometallurgical flowsheet requires quantitative description and optimisation of all chemical processes in each step in the process, as well as mass and energy balances across a fully integrated circuit incorporating all the unit operations. This paper covers steps leading to early modelling of a gold processing plant based on a bromine/bromide lixiviant. Research conducted at SGS Lakefield in collaboration with Albemarle provided the data that were used in the development of this model. A previous investigation in this series described the leaching behaviour of various mineral types in Stabilized Bromine reagent. This paper is concerned with the gold recovery operations associated with a conceptual bromine leaching process. The recovery of gold by different types of resin and activated carbon was studied, along with various methods of stripping the gold from the extractant. The circuit is closed by electrolysing the spent leach liquor to oxidize some of the contained bromide back to bromine that would allow recycling the regenerated leach solution back to the leach step in the process.

THE development of Reserve Mining Company's pelletizing practices began in 1949 in a pilot plant located at Ashland, Kentucky. Three years later the participating companies -Armco Steel Corporation, Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company and Republic Steel Corporation concluded the work and the small plant was shut down. Oglebay Norton and Company was the operating manager and Armco Steel Corporation furnished labor and services. Arthur G. McKee and Company were the designers and constructors. The equipment flow sheet that was employed in that pilot operation is shown in Figure 1. This was Reserve's first step from the laboratory work per-formed by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota in developing a commercial operation. The plant used New York state concentrate, purchased from Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's Benson Mine. This concentrate, minus 14 mesh, 64.3 per cent Fe, 5.7 per cent Si02, was processed at Ashland to 80 per cent minus 325 mesh in conventional ball mill, classifier, thickener, filtering

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

Data on world-wide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs are collected annually by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' Geo-physical Activity Committee as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data are obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations which are known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections; namely, ground methods, airborne methods and research. The data compiled from the questionnaires show that world-wide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1967 with total expenditures of (U .S.) $32,323,240. This was divided as follows: ground methods, $18,106,785; airborne methods, $10,-123,405; and research, $4,093,050. For the ground methods, most money was spent on the induced polarization technique ($5,681,780); electromagne-tic methods were second in reported expenditures ($2,010,900). The total reported geophysical line mileage flown was 1,275,072 line miles, with aeromagnetic surveying being the most popular airborne method. The total amount spent on aeromagnetic surveys was $5,832,564 for 895,420 line miles. This gives an average cost of (U.S.)$6.50 per line mile.

"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

The effects of organic compounds on the current efficiency (CE), morphology, crystal structure and mechanical properties of the metal deposited during the electrowinning of zinc are described. A flotation collector and lubricating oil were selected based on observations made during the industrial production of zinc from silicate ores, in Brazil. The analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of these compounds, which may be present in minor amounts in the electrolyte solution, indicated the presence of a polar amine group in the collector, while the lubricating oil is a non-polar compound. The average CE value obtained from organic-free industrial solution was 91.15 ± 0.26 %. The CE dropped to 54.35 ± 0.73 % in the presence of 100 mg·L-1 of collector in the solution, and a negative effect was also observed in the presence of similar amounts of oil (88.84 ± 0.61 %). The characterization of the deposits by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed the formation of pores in deposits obtained from solutions containing the oil, while a different growth pattern (perpendicular zinc platelets) was identified when the flotation collector was added to the industrial solution. In the presence of these contaminants in the solution, guided-bend tests revealed that the deposits have a higher resistance to deformation, but lower ductility, properties that may affect the performance of the stripping stage. As a result of this work, simple control and optimization actions were applied in the industrial plant, which resulted in important improvements in the electrowinning process.

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). This work has been focused on mining veintype deposits varying from 0.9 m to 1.5 m in width using open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods.In 1989, the Dome Mine entered into a contract with Ram Raising Ltd., a joint venture company of Angus Martin and I.S. Redpath Ltd., to develop and mine a narrow vein test stope using an Alimak Raise Climber. A groupd of French capitalists, La Compagnie Française des Mines d'Or du Canada, has undertaken the considerable task of developing Otter creek, in the Atlin district, B.C., by hydraulic mining methods. It has long been known that the gravels of this stream carry sufficiently high values in gold to make it attractive as a mining venture, but it was impossible to ignore the existence of formidable natural obstacles to hydraulicing them, and these needed to be taken into serious account before embarking upon any costly programme of development. The tide to the Otter Creek leases was originally held by Mr. H. Maluin, a French engineer well known throughout the north, to whom was to fall the task of financing whatever programme might be decided upon. It was he, too, who would have to assume the responsibility of finally passing judgment upon the practicability of the various devises for overcoming the adverse natural conditions. With an infinite attention to detail, which I believe to be a characteristic of the French people generally, he studied his problem and was finally able to submit to his financial backers a programme which left the very minimum possible to the hazard of accident or chance. Dr. Mandy, on his visit to Otter creek this season, expressed the opinion that our method of opening this difficult creek presented certain features which might be successfully applied in placer operations elsewhere in British Columbia, and it is largely for this reason that the present paper has been prepared. I shall set forth, as well as I can, the practices which have enabled us to overcome rather easily some of the obstacles which nature had unkindly placed in the path which we must take. The natural flow of water in Otter creek is far too little to deal success-fully with the rather excessive amount of glacial drift overburden which lies directly over the gold-bearing gravels. For this natural defect, the only remedy was to procure more water. This we have clone through a system of flumes and ditches, totalling between ten and eleven miles in length, which bring to the mine a supply of water adequate for our needs.

WITH the friendly consent both of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, for whom this paper was written, and of the author, we had the pleasure of publishing Mr. Oliver Hall's paper on Mining at Noranda in our issue of last March and of having Mr. Hall present it at the Montreal Meeting. In the following pages we now report the discussion elicited by the paper at a meeting of the Institution in London on March 18th. The report is taken from the April, 1937, issue of the Bulletin of the Institution, to whom we again tender our thanks. THE PRESIDENT (MR. ROBERT ANNAN) said that this paper was, by arrangement with the Institution and the author, also being published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for approximately simultaneous discussion. He was sorry that Mr. Oliver Hall could not be present to introduce it in person, for he was sure that the author would have had many more details to give about this most interesting mine. The paper contained a very useful account of mining operations, and personally he had been pleased to see the tri-dimensional projections of the orebody in Figs. 3 and S. It was a good illustration o the value of that method in presenting the form of an orebody such as this. While he had no desire to go into technical details, he wished to call attention to a remark in Mr. Hall's introduction, in dealing with the history of the mine and the principles on which it was run. The author had given an account of the early difficulties in solving geological problems, and later of the economic difficulties of seeing this mine through a period of intense depression in metal prices. He stated that it was clear that, to maintain income, tonnage must be increased, and, to maintain profits, costs must be decreased. It would be observed that there was no question of increasing the grade of ore. Then the author went on to say: 'Having set the house in order in the years of adversity, the higher price for gold is being used to mine to still lower limits and lengthen the life of the enterprise and the welfare of those dependent on it'.

Some of the more important recommendations on mining taxation are reviewed in this article. "THE Canadian Advisory Committee on Coal Research, which is commonly known as CACCR, has been in existence for the past five years and has held annual meetings during that period. This Committee is comprised of representatives from: the Mines Branch, Fuels and Mining Practice Division, Ottawa; the Geological Survey of Canada; the Dominion Coal Board; and the Provincial Research Councils and Foundations. It embraces all coal research in Canada that is sponsored, for the most part, by Government funds.To bring the country's coal research activities to the notice of the Canadian coal industry, the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division, C.I.M., passed a resolution at the 1964 business meeting in favour of recommending the publication of an annual research report prepared by the CACCR. "A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. Cette approche contraintes-ERF (SERF, de l’anglais strain-ERF) est appliquée à un programme d’instrumentation pour la mine Brunswick située près de Bathurst, dans le Nouveau-Brunswick. The most commonly used instrumentation for monitoring rock mass behaviour around open stopes is extensometers. The y-axis of Figure 1 represents how the changing rate of movement, measured using either displacement- or stress-type instruments, can be observed over time. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

"Abstract-The 682.8 ± 1.6 Ma Tickle Point Group consists mainly of rhyolite flows and tuffs with- in the Avalon Zone of the Appalachian Orogen in Newfoundland. Stratabound massive sulfide mineralization, consisting of pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, occurs at the Winter Hill prospect, where a lower pyritic, Cu-rich zone and an upper Zn-Pb-rich zone are hosted by a carbonate-calc-silicate lens. At the Frenchman Head prospect, stringers of pyrite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite and rare galena are hosted by felsic volcanic rocks of the Tickle Point Group .Base metal ratios, metal zonations and the overall stratigraphic framework suggest that these sulfide occurrences represent volcanogenic massive to semi-massive sulfide mineralization (stringer type at Frenchman Head). As such these prospects represent the only known VMS occurrences within the Avalon Zone of Newfoundland. Pb isotope data indicate that galena from the Winter Hill prospect is less radiogenic and older than galena from Dunnage Zone occurrences, and suggest that the Winter Hill mineralization formed in an environment tectonically distinct (exotic) from the Dunnage Zone."

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The primary assumption of the model was that all matte, slag and gaseous phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the matte components were considered only as copper, iron and sulfur elements. In the slag making stage, all the reacted iron was converted to fayalite. The reaction rate of iron and oxygen in this stage was considered to be constant. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balance over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depends on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency and molten emissivity.

"An experimental program has been carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's acid as an alternative oxidant to pyrolusite in the leaching of uranium ores from the Alligator Rivers region of northern Australia. Batch leaching tests on Ranger, Nabarlek, Koongarra and Jabiluka ores showed that uranium extraction was unaffected by choice of oxidant, but that Caro's acid reduced acid requirements by 15 - 25%. Lime requirements for neutralization of tailings liquors were reduced by 20 - 30%.The batch studies were extended to a four-stage continuous leaching circuit with a capacity of 400 gore h-I. Comparative leaching tests confirmed the reagent savings obtained in the batch tests. Following these encouraging laboratory results, lnterox Chemicals Pty Ltd carried out plant trials using Caro's acid. Reagent savings in the mill were similar to, or better than, those obtained in laboratory test work. The trials also established that Caro's acid has a number of operational advantages over pyrolusite.IntroductionUranium is most commonly extracted from its ores by leaching in sulphuric acid. Simple hexavalent uranium oxides and compounds are readily soluble but uranium in the tetravalent form is insoluble and must be oxidized for dissolution to occur. The most commonly used oxidants have been sodium chlorate and manganese dioxide. They act indirectly by maintaining iron as the ferric ion which oxidizes uranium by a surface electro- chemical reaction. An Fe3+ concentration of about 1 - 2 g L-I is usually considered adequate for the effective dissolution of uraninite(1)."

"Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. "Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Valuable base metals, such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten, are used in a wide range of important technological applications. The demand for many of these metals has increased significantly over the last few decades, driven especially by economic expansion in Asia generally and China in particular. This has led in turn to a large growth in the output of mines in order to satisfy this increasing demand, as shown by the data in Table 1 (USGS, 1994, 2014). These data reflect an even longer trend of growth of these metals, with nickel, for example, showing an average rate of 5.3% per year from 1980 until 2015 (International Nickel Study Group, 2017). This rapid and sustained rate of growth means that annual mine outputs for nickel, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium have had to double roughly every 11 to 14 years, whilst cobalt mine output has had to double roughly every 7 years, over the period from 1994 until 2014. With the average working life of a nickel mine being between 17 and 22 years (Statista, 2017), this means that from the time a nickel mine opens until it closes, the industry needs to find the equivalent of another three or four mines of a similar output to satisfy this relentless growth in demand for the metal."
