"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. Large production shafts can be successfully sunk through the ubiquitous Blairmore formation of southern Saskatchewan by employing the freezing process and by the installation of a cast iron tubbing lining. Although the freezing technique for shaft sinking and the use of cast iron tubbing to preserve the shaft are new to the North American continent, these procedures have been employed in Europe for the past eighty years. More than 200 shafts, covering a wide variety of ground conditions, have been sunk by the freezing process, and most of these have been lined with cast iron tubbing. The No. 1 shaft of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, comprises the first major example in Canada of the employment of European methods to overcome extremely difficult ground conditions. The Blairmore formation was solidified by the deep freezing process, employing a lithium chloride solution as the refrigerant, with input temperatures ranging to -55°F

Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

"During the excavation of underground galleries in a rock mass, reorganisation of the stress field around the site results in damage to the surrounding material. In the framework of research undertaken at the ANDRA underground laboratory in France, galleries have been excavated in a Callovo-Oxfordian argillite formation. The damage has manifest as a number of fracture systems in the adjacent rock. Observations have shown that fractures generated during excavation and storage exploitation are able to self-seal during re-saturation of the site in the post-closure stage. Although indirect evidence for argillite self-sealing has previously been reported, from experiments performed both in situ and on samples, no direct observations of self-sealing have yet been made.For the present study, we performed a range of self-sealing experiments using a newly-developed triaxial compression cell placed within a nano-CT scanner with a 10 µm resolution. The body of the compression cell is X-ray transparent, allowing sample healing to be monitored directly. The samples contained an artificial fracture that had been generated in the laboratory, into which a fluid was injected. The fractures were orientated either perpendicular or parallel to the plane of anisotropy of the material. Our initial results demonstrate that when fluid is injected perpendicular to the plane of anisotropy, the flow-rate has no apparent influence on the kinetics of fracture closure. Permeability varies significantly, from 2.10-14 to 2.10-18 m2 over 116 hours. Post-test observations of the fracture lips show swelling that appears to be orientated perpendicular to the fracture plane and therefore parallel to the plane of anisotropy. Initial results for an injection parallel to the plane of anisotropy suggest that, in this case, the rate of flow affects the kinetics of fracture closure. For a flow-rate of 0.25 ml/min, closure begins after around one minute. In contrast, for a rate of 0.05 ml/min, it is necessary to wait several minutes before partial sealing of the zone is observed. The reduction in permeability is again significant, from 2.10-15 to 4.10-18 m2 over 96 hours. After completion of the test, swelling was observed in elongated zones that lie parallel to the fracture plane and therefore to the plane of anisotropy."

"Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite ironsand deposits occur along a 480 km stretch of the west coast of New Zealand. In the present study, the leaching behaviour of NZ ironsand was investigated in hydrochloric acid (2–10 M) solution at 50–80°C for 2 h. The resulting leaching liquors exhibited Fe/V ratios in the range 150–180. The distribution of trace element contaminants between solution and solid residue was investigated, and processing conditions have been determined for rapid and efficient dissolution of Fe, Ti and V into the leaching solution. In addition, mineralogical analysis of raw ironsand and leached residues was performed in order to study the leaching mechanism. Samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). Results indicate that the dominant dissolution process follows shrinking particle mechanism. However, ironsand particles containing ex-solution lamellae exhibited a different leaching behaviour compared to homogenous titanomagnetite particles.INTRODUCTION Titanomagnetite ironsand (blacksand) forms Quaternary onshore beach and dune deposits and offshore marine deposits (Figure 1) along 480 km of coastline from Kaipara Harbour south to Wanganui on the west coast of the North Island (Christie, 2016). It attracted the attention of scientists from the earliest times (Galbreath, 1998). The principal minerals in ironsand are titanomagnetite (TTM), ilmenite, quartz and ferromagnesian minerals such as augite, hornblende, diopside, and olivine with smaller amounts of rutile and apatite (Mauk, 2016).Several large ironsand deposits have been discovered and exploited since the late 1960’s. The Waikato North Head and Taharoa mines are currently operating and they have a 2015 measured resource of 400 million tonnes in total and provide over 2 million tonnes of concentrate per year by simple cost effective magnetic separation process (Christie, 2016; Christie & Brathwaite, 1997). The concentrate contains not only 7–8% TiO2 and 56–60% SFe, but also 0.3–0.6% V2O5, is both a valuable titanium mineral and a source of vanadium. All the production is used for steelmaking industries. The other potential for utilizing more of this resource without requirement of integration into an iron and steel producing plant is to develop a hydrometallurgical route with advantages of higher efficiency along with lower emissions. Currently, there is no existing commercial process capable of extracting all three of these elements as industrial-grade commodity products. Acid leaching of TTM concentrate with higher degrees of recovery and selectivity is a key step in any possible hydrometallurgical route."

The extractive industry has the potential to impact the health and well-being of workers, families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of social performance, project planning considers that activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way across the development cycle (i.e. from exploration ? post-closure). In this context, health impacts of mining can be mapped and extend over the Life of the Community and can encompass worker injury and disease, exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health outcomes specific to family and community health and well-being outside the fence. To contribute to an emerging field focused on Health and the Extractive Industry, this paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining, oil and gas companies with operations in Australia and Canada. The objective of this review is to map corporate approaches to public health management across our previously developed Life-of-Mine within Life-of-Community (LOMLOC) framework in order to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments across the project cycle, as well as identify the level of prevention targeted by this investment activity (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of detrimental health impact). With the extractive industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, this paper provides preliminary comparative information about corporate health spending by some companies in Australia and Canada. This information serves as a resource for minerals industry managers, civil society and regulators regarding current health management approaches in this sector.

This paper builds on presentations made at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2015, COM 2017 and Extraction 2018 and associated papers published in the respective conference proceedings. Based on the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper describes how metal mining can be compatible with sustainable development and how sustainability considerations have been applied in the primary copper industry, using several examples of sustainable mining practices from ASARCO LLC operations. Finally, the paper discusses how these considerations might be used in the future by discussing the need for developing a sustainable development strategy and how this strategy can be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTRODUCTION The primary copper industry comprises: mining (also referred to as “extraction”); mineral processing (also referred to as “beneficiation, “milling” or “concentration,”) which includes leaching, solvent extraction (SX), crushing, grinding, froth and flotation operations; and metallurgical processing which includes smelting and converting; refining, which includes fire-refining or anode refining and electro-refining; and electrowinning (EW). There are two routes for producing refined copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. The hydrometallurgical route comprises mining (open-pit and underground), mineral processing (crushing and grinding — for heap leaching only; leaching and SX) and metallurgical processing (EW). The pyrometallurgical route involves mining, mineral processing (crushing, grinding and froth flotation) and metallurgical processing (smelting, fire refining and electro- refining). The primary copper industry is capital, water, resource and energy intensive with the potential for significant environmental impacts, if the environmental aspects are not properly managed. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V (Grupo México) acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, SX-EW plants, a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper electrolytic refinery in Texas.

"IntroductionELEMENTAL sulphur occurs in three types of deposits: in salt domes in the Gulf Coast region of the United States and Mexico, from which over 90 per cent of world native-sulphur production is obtained; in sedimentary deposits such as those in Sicily, which are thought by some authorities to contain the largest world reserves of elemental sulphur; and as surface deposits, associated now or in the past with some phase of vulcanism, the type which bas the greatest world-wide distribution.Deposits of the volcanic type are the subject of this paper.From antiquity until the successful development of the sulphur-bearing salt domes at the beginning of this century, important sulphur production for local needs was obtained from volcanic deposits in many parts of the world. Due to technical and economic factors, however, producers could not compete in price with sulphur from salt domes. •The result has been that, except in Japan and Chile, little sulphur was produced from volcanic deposits from about 1910 until the start of the Korean war in 1950. Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean war, an acute world sulphur shortage developed and prices skyrocketed in many countries up to several hundred dollars a ton. Interest in volcanic deposits was renewed and exploitation of many was undertaken. Few of these operations have been successful, mostly due to inability of management to solve technical problems.While important volcanic deposits of elemental sulphur have not been reported ( 1) in Canada, and it is doubtful that any will be found, data presented in this paper may be of interest to students of ore genesis.This paper is based on field examination of numerous deposits of the volcanic type in North and South America."

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."

The first paper presented on this work [1], showed how bath ratio was increased from 78% to over 95% using a structured approach to reduce bath chemistry variability. This update will illustrate the steps taken and update the results presented earlier, showing the effects of long power interruptions and several load reductions as well as load increase during the period from 1999 to 2005. Current efficiency was affected by such processes upset; however, bath ratio in range (±0.05) is still higher than 90%, even after an increment of more than 6 kA. This review will explain each of the steps taken to reach stability in this critical smelting parameter.

The effects of several fluxes on purification, microstructures and properties of A00 aluminium have been studied. The experimental results and analyses indicate that many cracks and large porosities exist in the surface film above the melt purified by C2Cl6 and that the film is floe and mostly composed of AhO3 and pure aluminum, which carries many carbon particles and AlCh not fully volatilized. And then over 50% of the all-melting residue is pure aluminum, which is one of the major reasons for high melting loss. Moreover, because of a mass of gas bubbles and a state of seethe, there exist many inclusions which size is under l0µm in the microstructure of A00 aluminum purified with C2Cl6 or fluxes containing C2Cl6- With this purifying method, the aluminum crystal grains are extended along the radius that was observed firstly and the average crystal size of A00 aluminum are about 100µm~150µm. In addition, small size inclusions have little affected on tensile strength and micro inclusions under l0µm have little affected on elongation.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This article presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking, and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics, and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rockbreaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days during which there have been no reported collisions, and 100% adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the sites overall throughput.

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . The Ilo Smelter Modernization Project will require treating the slag from the Peirce Smith converters in Slag Cleaning Furnaces using pig iron technology. Currently the slags from the converters show variable magnetite contents. The copper contained in this slag is recovered in Reverberatory Furnaces, where the smelting rate was improved due to the high silica content of the converter slag. Preliminary industrial tests where developed to clean the slag from converters using pig iron. The results showed that the magnetite content has a significant influence in this process. This work describes the actions that are being implemented in the converter operation to control the magnetite content in the slag in order to maintain the high copper recovery of the smelter when the new facilities are commissioned. This task will demand a strong control of both the slag chemistry and converter practices in order to get the copper recovery considered as the design criteria (~97.4%).

When underground extractions occur beneath or in close proximity to valleys and other forms of irregular surface topographic features, the observed vertical subsidence at the base of the valley is less than that would be expected in flat terrain, while the valley sides are observed to move inwards towards the centre of the valley. The reduction in subsidence at the bottom of the valley is referred to as upsidence and the convergence of two sides of the valley is termed valley closure. Research coupled with mining experience over the past few decades in Australia has identified valley closure subsidence as being very real and quite significant part of non-conventional subsidence effects, which always have adverse effects on natural features, with risks to water flow and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, we describe a threedimensional numerical modelling approach to investigate the geomechanical mechanisms which cause the valley closure subsidence behaviour, using distinct element computer package 3DEC. The calibrated models can accurately predict subsidence and horizontal displacements, and they are subsequently extended to specifically study the effect of a series of mining geological and topographical factors on valley closure subsidence phenomenon, by developing a range of hypothetical scenarios. Previous analyses carried out using a two-dimensional numerical modelling technique have identified the potential parameters that affect the valley closure subsidence, which mainly include longwall position, horizontal stresses, valley sloping angle, and valley shape. Further three-dimensional analyses regarding the relationships between the major factors and valley closure subsidence are discussed in this paper. The results have significant implications with regard to both the underlying mechanisms that lead to this nonconventional subsidence behaviour, and how these should be incorporated in future valley closure subsidence prediction and mitigation of its impacts on natural features.

Developers can then ensure that systems deliver key information in an accurate and timely way. In this paper, general maintenance decision-making is discussed, with examples of how model-based analysis can improve the information delivered to decision makers.

The Goro Nickel Process, developed over a ten-year period, uses a number of novel processing steps and treats two ore types, limonite and saprolite, together. Nickel and cobalt are solubilized using a 270°C pressure acid leach in sulphuric acid, which rejects the bulk of the Fe into the leach residue as hematite particles. The leach liquor, after CCD, is aerated to oxidize any ferrous iron to the ferric form and is neutralized with limestone to precipitate iron as hydroxides together with gypsum from the neutralization of the free acid. Further neutralization with lime, together with steps to remove suspended solids, reduces the iron to trace concentrations. Nickel and cobalt are directly recovered from the low-iron leach solution by primary solvent extraction using Cyanex 301® (SXl) in a high-strength hydrochloric acid solution. Nickel is subsequently separated from cobalt in a secondary solvent extraction circuit using tri-isooctylamine. A granular nickel oxide is made by pyrohydrolysis, and this allows the recycling of hydrochloric acid to SXl. The process is currently being commercialized to produce approximately 60,000 t/y of nickel as nickel oxide granules and approximately 5,400 t/y of cobalt as cobalt carbonate. This paper describes the process development to control the Fe concentration in the SX1 feed solution.

"The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. "The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."
