Pipeline operation and maintenance necessarily involves geotechnical studies at points and areas with deflagrated instabilities or still to map and monitor areas prone to geotechnical problems. Landslides, erosions and debris flows are some examples of natural hazards, that not rarely, can bring high consequences to pipelines, sometimes leading them to high stresses levels and ruptures. Bolivia-Brazil Natural Gas Pipeline has 2.593 kilometers since Rio Grande City in Bolivia until Canoas City, in south Brazil. The pipeline crosses a lot of types of geological fields and difficult topography. The south spread of the pipeline has the most prone areas to geotechnical hazards because of its hard topography combined with the variety of geological materials, such as, colluvium deposits and debris flow areas. The aim of this paper is to present the right-of-way geotechnical risks that affect pipelines, presenting some practical remedial works done by TBG at Bolivia-Brazil Natural Gas Pipeline as well as the integrity plan and the adopted actions in way to prevent geotechnical accidents.

"The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world's largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

The 14MW SAG mill at Tarkwa, Ghana, experienced a frozen drop charge incident on 10 February 2010. This caused downtime of 112 hours, a repair cost of $200k and production loss of 162,000 tons, corresponding to a loss of $8.9M. A new locked charge protection system was installed on the two Tarkwa mills on 30 July 2010, mitigating this risk. This system calculates the ore angle in real time while the mill is starting up and trips the mill if the ore angle exceeds a trip angle setting. The calculation of the ore angle is derived from the mill motor rotor currents only - no mechanical transducers are required. The head of Gold Fields West Africa, Peter Turner, says of the new system: "This is excellent work and the type of technology that has had and will continue to have, major opportunity cost impacts on our business."

"A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (Figure 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (Figure 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."

The cold, or Kississing, Lake area in northwestern Manitoba was the scene of considerable prospecting and mining activity last summer. At the Sherritt-Gordon property, four diamond drills were at work exploring a large deposit of copper and zinc ore, and underground work was in progress on this deposit from two shafts. Some preliminary diamond drilling was completed in five other deposits, and surface exploration work was in progress at a dozen or more additional localities where copper and zinc sulphides were known to be present. Many prospectors visited the area and spent some time in search for new deposits, but apparently few discoveries were made; consequently, last autumn some returned a little disappointed in the area as a prospecting field. Although many visited Cold Lake area last summer in the search for mineral deposits, it should be emphasized that this new prospecting field is a very large one, and that to date only a small proportion of the ground has been examined, except in a very general way. Within the past 18 months, a village of several dozen cabins, and with a population of l00 or more persons, has sprung up on the shore of Cold lake, just west of the Sherritt-Gordon mine. This at present is the business centre of the area, and two banks, a post office - named Kississing by the Postal authorities - a Mining Recorder's office, as well as several restaurants and stores carrying a fairly complete stock of groceries, dry-goods, and general prospecting equipment, are already established.

L?arrivée de nouvelles technologies sur le marché des foreuses portables combinée au besoin des mines à mieux consommer l?énergie électrique ont permis d?identifier le potentiel de deux nouveaux type de foreuses présentement utilisées en Afrique du Sud, à savoir les foreuses électriques et les foreuses hydrauliques actionnées à l?eau. Grâce à la collaboration de mines Niobec et Géant Dormant de Cambior Inc., ainsi que d?Hydro-Québec, le potentiel réel d?économie énergétique des foreuses portables hydrauliques et électriques par rapport aux foreuses conventionnelles à air comprimé a été évalué pour des roches dures et moles. Ainsi, cet article a pour objectif d faire ressortir ces potentiels d?économie énergétiques. En outre, les résultats pour une mine mécanisée et une autre mine de type filonien, dans lesquelles on retrouve des conditions de terrain différentes, seront présentés. Les résultats montrent un potentiel d?économie énergétique d?environ 70% pour la foreuse électrique et d?environ 50% pour la foreuse actionnée à l?eau. Ces résultats montrent qu?il est possible d?obtenir une meilleure efficacité énergétique par mètre foré. Ainsi, il apparaît maintenant intéressant de poursuivre les travaux de développement des deux technologies pour les applications de forage vertical et de tensionnement des boulons, et de viser à accroitre le taux de pénétration de la foreuse électrique pour le rendre équivalent à celui de la foreuse à air comprimé.

"Promote and apply a new beneficiation technology and equipment effectively processing the refractory and medium-fine grained weak-magnetic minerals. HUATE® Forced-oil Cooling Vertical Ring WHIMS adopts the transformer oil cooling technology to cool excitation coils, solving the easily generated scaling problem resulting from water cooling, thereby to eliminate the demineralized water system. With <25 temperature ?raise, its magnetic field is stable. Wrapped by outer magnetic armor, it can generate a background intensity 1360kA/m. It effects very well in 1) wet preseparating the weak-magnetic coarse grains, like hematite, manganese ore, ilmenite, and purifying the concentrate; 2) removing the ferrous impurities and purifying the non-metallic minerals, like quartz, feldspar, kaolin; 3) enriching and recovering tailings from non-ferrous metals, like copper, lead, cobalt, molybdenum, thereby to greatly improve the mine resource utilization. Greatly promoting development of mineral processing technologies, HUATE® WHIMS is the equipment to reduce costs and improve efficiency urgently needed by the mine enterprises now.INTRODUCTIONAt present, influenced by the price and production factors, the international market demand for the grade of iron ores is increasing continuously. Restricted by the ore occurrence state, the beneficiation technology level and product economic value, every year the stope strips the stockpiling and discards hundreds of millions of tons of waste rocks containing iron, especially the weak magnetic hematite and limonite with <20% Fe%. The utilization technological bottleneck of these waste rocks makes their concentration ratio as high as 5-6, which leads to the huge wastes of energy, materials and beneficiation reagents and the increase of production costs. The effective solution is to improve the selected Fe% of the waste rocks like hematite. With the successful application of HPGR technologies in Chinese large iron mines, the mill feeding size has been reduced to 6-0 mm or 3-0 mm from the original 15-0 mm in the crushing system with 3 stages of crushing and 1 stage of closed circuit. This creates the conditions for the wet separation and recovery. While for the medium-fine grained weak-magnetic minerals, it lacks of the effective separation and recovery equipment in the world, which’s badly in need of R&D of the medium-fine grained high gradient wet strong magnetic preseparation equipment."

METAL PRICES RISE WITHIN the past nine months, the mining industry of the world has been revivified by a spectacular price advance for the metals. ln fact, practically all geological raw materials have been marked up during this period. Reviving industry started the price rise, but the armaments race among the nations has intensified it. These factors, coupled with our decided building shortage, which must be made up, will probably maintain metal prices at decidedly favourable levels over the next two or three years, or longer. OUR MINERAL CIVILIZATION It is interesting to recall that in the past hundred years, while the white population of the world increased some three ta three and a half fold, the consumption of minerals increased seventy-five fold. In other words, ours is a mineral civilization. If we disregard short slumps, which we will occasionally experience, it seems certain that the bread upward trend in mineral consumption will be maintained for many decades into the future. Nations without reasonably abundant and diverse mineral deposits will eventually become nations without much power. Canada is blessed with a splendid store of minerals. Its mineral industry is now facing an exceptionally rosy future. What of the mineral industry of Nova Scotia? GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ALLOWED TO LAG RN NOVA SCONA Many years ago, when geological science was in? its infancy, much geological study was carried on in Nova Scotia. In 1827, Francis Alger began work on the iron ores in the Bay of Fundy region. In 1886, E. R. Faribault began his series of remarkable papers on Nova Scotia geology. Between these dates, many others published papers on the geology of the Province. The most outstanding of this early group of geologists was Sir William Dawson, whose published works on Nova Scotian geology extended over the period from 1845 to 1891.

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. Cement grouting is old and well established, and many engineers are familiar with its uses and limitations. The preparation of a paper read before this Society in 1927 on Undersea Mining led to representations to the Deputy Minister of Mines at Ottawa, Dr. Chas. Camsell, and to the Director of the Geological Survey and the Director of the Mines Branch, which resulted in the undertaking by these bodies of a geological, physical, and chemical survey of the Sydney coalfield, combined with revision of the geological maps, on all of which much progress has been made. Preliminary studies revealed the necessity for a new base-map on a scale that would permit the representation of the whole coalfield from cape Dauphin to Mira bay on one sheet, and in the making of this map the Geodetic and Topographical Surveys have collaborated, with the assistance of airplane surveys for filling-in of detail. The new map will show all the data accumulated by 50 years of active mining and will show also the extent of mine workings, with level-contours under the sea. Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey, has, over a number of seasons, studied in the field the historical geology with the purpose of elucidating the sequence of earth movements that have determined the structure of the coalfields, especially those that have governed the course and extent of the complementary folds that traverse the Sydney coalfield. Dr. B. R. MacKay, of the Survey, and the officers of the Fuel Testing Laboratories at Ottawa have made exhaustive studies of the Phalen seam, chemical and microscopic, intended to elucidate the conditions under which this seam was deposited, and some very interesting conclusions have been reached.

"The ventilation-related risks from mines with elemental sulphur include dust explosions, spontaneous combustion with emission of heat and toxic sulphur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide gases, reactions with nitrates, corrosion, acid water, and pyrophoric reactions with naked iron or other metals. Elemental sulphur will form explosive mixtures in air at lower dust concentrations and at lower ignition temperatures than coal or sulphide dusts. Potential controls include primary ventilation circuit design, control of dust deposition and static discharges, enclosing steel surfaces, inert stone dusting, FRAS ducting, humidifying the air, alternate stench gas, self-contained self-rescuers with goggles, careful siting of underground infrastructure, controls on explosives formulations and procedures, mining method selection, controls on surface temperatures and protection of equipment, careful materials selection for ventilation seals and changes to worker clothing and training.INTRODUCTIONSulphur (“Brimstone” in biblical times) is one of the world’s most important industrial feedstocks and is used in a wide range of chemical processes and industries. Until the early 20th Century, most of the world’s production of sulphur came from ‘conventional’ underground mines in Sicily (Demetra produzioni, 2006; Bellia, 2006). This was a hazardous activity. The Frasch solution mining process replaced traditional underground mining of sulphur until the late 20th Century. Most of the world’s production of elemental sulphur is now as a by-product from sour gas produced in petroleum refineries and natural gas installations (Anon, 1993). As such, there is considerable experience in understanding and managing the hazards of elemental sulphur in chemical plants and surface transport.Whilst rare, underground mines with high elemental sulphur contents (as a gangue mineral) create an unusual range of mine design and operational issues, including many ventilation-related ones. The key hazards from elemental sulphur include: primary and secondary elemental sulphur dust explosions, fires and burning (with emission of heat and sulphur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide gas), reactions with nitrates used in explosives, corrosion of steel and other metals, generation of acid water (especially at higher water temperatures), and pyrophoric reactions with naked iron (e.g., ground support, ladderways or underground fixed plant) or other metals including silver and copper (e.g., used in electrical components and equipment)."

"3.1. IntroductionAmong the six platinum-group elements (POE), four have identical cubic symmetry, two identical hexagonal symmetry (Table 3.1). Despite crystallographic differences, there is a clear relationship expressed in the chemistries of the POE: they tend to be mutually soluble in one another and can frequently substitute for one another in compounds with other elements. This chapter consolidates the data on phase relations of the POE and the compounds they form with elements selected for their known or potentially important mineralogical significance- As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sn and Te-together with selected data for the occurrence of POE in certain elements such as Au and Ag, and compounds such as FeS. Resources used to compile the data are those available from the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature. First each element is discussed, with composition limits of solid solutions drawn from binary phase diagrams. Single element data are followed by a discussion of the relevant binary systems and a tabulation of data for binary compounds found in those systems (Table 3.2). Tables and diagrams for the ternary and quaternary systems for which information is available follow, and finally the very limited information on the solubility of POE in mineralogically important elements and compounds is presented.The chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature on the unary and binary systems is extensive and widely scattered in many languages and publications; fortunately, most of the data needed to compile this chapter can be found in reliable compendia. The most useful and most recent of these works is by Moffatt (1979), because it provides a ready index to all material relating to binary systems listed in previous compendia; furthermore, the Moffatt compendium will reportably be kept up to date by annual supplements."

"Block caving is the preferred underground mining method to profitably extract massive, low-grade orebodies; however, lack of cave access inhibits understanding the rockmass response to mining, which is needed for safer, more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualization (VRSV) is an alternative method for understanding complex cave behaviour, by providing virtual access to the cave. A customized VRSV module was developed at UNSW Australia to investigate rockmass response to undercut developments at a case-study block caving operation. Time/sequence effects are investigated in rockmass response to blasting, which is an important factor in hard-rock mines.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’extraction souterraine par blocs foudroyés est la méthode préférentielle pour extraire rentablement des gisements massifs à faible teneur. Toutefois, le manque d’accès à la chambre restreint la compréhension de la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’exploitation, ce qui est nécessaire pour obtenir des opérations plus sécuritaires et plus productives. "A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. "FOLLOWING the Leduc discovery •by Imperial Oil in 1947, The California Standard Company began to acquire land in the area immediately west of Edmonton and in line with the Leduc reef trend (Figure 1).The California Standard Winter-burn Province No. 1 in Lsd. 10, Section 4, Township 53, Range 25, West 4th, which was spudded, on the basis of a seismic anomaly, in December, 1949, failed to find reef. This well was located on the eastern .edge of a large land block which California Standard and Imperial Oil had pooled as a joint venture, with California Standard a:s the operator (Figure 2).The culmination •of an extensive exploration and land aquisition programme was the drilling of the California Standard-Acheson Province No. 1 well .in Lsd. 13, Section 2, Township 53, Range 26, West 4th. On August 24th, 1950, a drill stem test was run in the D-3 zone which had been encountered at 4,969 feet, and a flow rate of 702 barrels per day •of 36° gravity oil was obtained. Just previously, Imperial Oil had completed a similar programme in the Stony Plain Reserve with the swabbing-in of Imperial Stony Plain No. 1. These two discoveries set off a drilling programme to determine the extent and value of the oil accumulation.Subsequent drilling of wells some successful .and others not by several other companies as well as California Standard bias, .to date, still left much to be determined as to the approximate delineation of the productive limits of the Ache-son-Stony Plain area. However, to August 31st, 1951, there were twenty-one D-3 producers north of the reserve and three in the Stony Plain Reserve."

"This presentation will provide an overview and understanding of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Ontario Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants. It includes discussions on the history and practical development of the standards and an overview of engineering best practices from a construction, maintenance and operational viewpoint. INTRODUCTION Ontario is one of the safest mining jurisdictions in the world and has some of the most comprehensive regulations for the construction, operation and maintenance of a mine. In the USA, several operators have adopted some or all of the practices prescribed by the Ontario Regulations as an internal procedure. Experience has demonstrated that these plants are indicating less unplanned downtime and fewer issues with MSHA inspectors in their hoist plants. HISTORY AND THE REGULATIONS Both Canada and the USA have had some form of laws governing the operation of mines since the late 1890s. The paths of legislation have run in reasonably parallel lines, continually improving the health and safety conditions in the mining industry. Ontario Mine Health and Safety In the 1970s the accident rates in mining were higher than any other industrial sector; this prompted a Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (the Ham Report). The recommendations of this report, published in 1976, generated several changes in the regulations regarding worker safety in mines. Following the release of the Ham report, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) was passed by the Legislature in 1978. The Act is a set of comprehensive laws governing almost all Ontario workplaces, and it replaced separate laws governing different industrial sectors. OHS is enforced by the Ministry of Labour (MOL), and this discussion will focus specifically on Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 854, Mines and Mining Plants, Part X Mine Hoisting Plant (Ontario Regulations). USA Mine Health and Safety A coal mine explosion in West Virginia and medical studies on occupational disease led to the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act). The Coal Act was the most comprehensive and stringent Federal legislation governing the mining industry to date. The Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) was formed, following the 1973 Act, as a new departmental agency to assume the enforcement of safety and health in mines. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act) transferred enforcement responsibilities from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Labor and named the new agency the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In July of 2013, Lundin Mining acquired the 2,000 tpd Eagle nickel and copper project from Rio Tinto. The project had been put on hold earlier in the year and construction was approximately 50% complete. Lundin immediately accelerated project activities and by September of 2014 the project was constructed, commissioned and ramping up. The newly commissioned facilities went on to reach design throughput, recovery and product quality targets by the end of the year. This was accomplished ahead of schedule and below budget despite numerous obstacles including the worst winter on record in the past 50 years for the area. What led to the success of the project, and in particular the commissioning phase of the project? This paper takes a high level look back and provides an overview of the methodology used, key issues encountered and lessons learned to answer this question.

"In mineral processing, it is often very difficult to reliably measure several key operation variables. The harsh environment and high temperature encountered in pyrometallurgy processes lead to some difficulties when selecting the instruments, valves and actuators. If an important variable cannot be measured or manipulated adequately, controlling it can really become a big challenge. Sometimes, it is simply impossible to find the perfect equipment for the task. To help overcome these difficulties, a different approach is required. This approach will not correct the inherent problems related to the instruments and valves, but will cope with these problems. This article will demonstrate how modern process control techniques can be used to solve complex problems while remaining easy to implement. In this article we will described how soft sensors and multivariable fuzzy logic control were implemented at Koniambo Nickel to stabilize the furnace feed and allow for safe and reliable operation of an 80 MW DC arc furnace.INTRODUCTION Process Overview The process plant at Koniambo Nickel SAS is located in the North Province of New Caledonia, 310 km north of Noumea. The nickel-bearing ore is mined in the nearby Koniambo massif. After being screened and crushed, the ore is transported to the processing plant using a 12 km conveyor. After stacking in two blending piles, the ore, containing 2.3% nickel, is fed to the processing plant where it will go through the NST process (Nickel Smelting Technology) before being sent to refining and shotting. This article will focus on the improvement to control of the NST processes. The first steps of this process consist of milling the ore and removing all moisture through calcining (Figure 1)."

The annual consumption of iron powder is now at the 100,000-ton level, twenty times higher than it was at the end of World War II, and the yearly in-crease bas been almost consistent at 20 per cent. This is expected to increase, bringing the tonnage to 200,-000, or even (according to some experts) to 270,000, in 1970. In any event, powder metallurgy is expanding at high speed and making an important impact on the production of iron and steel products. Some indication of the faith in the future market may be indicated by the commencement of three new powder production plants in Canada with a total capacity of 136,000 tons annually."

Minera Sabinas in central Mexico treats a complex sulfide ore containing galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite as valuable minerals, and in some cases important amounts of non-magnetic pyrrhotite. For high pyrrhotite ores, results obtained by selective flotation showed good grades and recoveries in the lead-copper circuit, but a commercial zinc concentrate could not be produced due to the high floatability of pyrrhotite. When this is the case, an alternative method was proposed to produce a bulk concentrate by flotation which is then leached to recover copper and zinc from liquor in a SX-EW circuit. Leaching was conducted in an autoclave in order to study the effect of temperature and pressure, but bioleaching tests were also conducted. Leaching lead-silver residues were treated by cyanidation in order to recover silver values. The results obtained by selective flotation and by bulk flotation with leaching of the bulk concentrate showed that the latter alternative increased zinc recovery by 30 % with similar recoveries of the other metals.
