In the past years the enormous weight saving potential of magnesium sheet has been demonstrated by various research projects all over the world. It has been shown magnesium flat products can benefit automotive, aviation, machine tool and consumer electronics industries. Major material problems such as poor formability, corrosion resistance and high production cost still inhibit the application of magnesium sheets in large scale production. The present contribution outlines achievements in casting and rolling technology. The authors developed an adapted strip casting process in which near-net-shape rolling feedstock of several wrought alloys has been produced. During the rolling process, various parameters were varied in order to modify the microstructure and surface quality of sheet. Several temperature cycles, strains, lubricants, roll surface structures and roll coatings have been analyzed. The sheets were examined and tested in deep-drawing experiments. Suitable rolling schedules have been developed for standard and modified wrought alloys. The study concludes with an overview of current industrial solutions and an estimation of the potential cost savings that might result from the adaptation of the process that has been developed.

"Demand of high pressurized gas storage in underground rock caverns is increasing. Compressed natural gas (CNG) and compressed air energy storage (CAES) are one of the promising examples after since lined rock cavern (LRC) concept has been verified through in-situ pilot tests. Two key essential concerns of high pressured gas storage in underground rock caverns are mechanical stability of the cavern against high inner storage pressure and the risk of gas leakage from the caverns.In this study, we introduce our results of numerical simulations so as to investigate the potential of monitoring for gas leakage at a pilot facility for CAES in underground LRCs. The pilot facility was constructed at a comparatively shallow depth of 100 m, compared to the previous cases with several hundreds of meters, aiming at validating the feasibility of the LRC storage concept in which inner sealing liners, consisting of steel plate and concrete linings, are installed inside the excavated rock caverns (KIGAM, 2011). Compressed air may leak through either initial defects of inner containment liners such as imperfect welding regions and in-situ construction joints of the liners, or through structurally damaged points of the liners during the CAES operation where compression and decompression of the caverns are necessarily repeated and their structural robustness can be deteriorated.For this perspective, we carried out a coupled thermodynamic and geomechanical deformation analysis using TOUGH-FLAC simulator, and investigated the effectiveness of strain monitoring method in detecting mechanical failure of liners which may provide major pathways of air leakage. We therefore used an equivalent continuum model to relate the localized tangential strain to fracture permeability changes, which was developed in our early work (Rutqvist et al, 2012). In detecting and characterizing the leakage location, we tested a cross correlation technique using the synthetic pressure responses monitored in case of the failure of the inner liners. From the investigations, we showed that tangential strain, rather than radial, monitoring especially at the inner face of the sealing liners can be more effective in detecting the mechanical failure of the liners.In localizing the leakage point, we noted that the interface between the inner liners and surrounding rock may not be perfectly bonded so as to increase permeability through which any leaking air pressure may migrate more dominantly. We also demonstrated that the cross correlation of the time histories of pressure measurement especially at these interfaces can be useful in identifying the leakage point. These results may provide useful information in overall design of monitoring and alarming system of our upcoming CAES pilot facilities."

"The ultimate aim of a mine design is to determine the development work involved and resources required by adopting one or more specific alternatives. A part of the process is the production of mining plans/designs, an outline of the amount of work and costs involved as well as a prediction of the revenues expected. The paper aims to examine these aspects of mine design using the computer models developed. These models are capable of designing and performing economic analysis for one or more stopes for a continuous orebody. IntroductionTatiya and Allen (1987) have described ’defining stope boundaries using a computer.’ Using the stope boundaries defined or even hypothetical ones, algorithms have been prepared to design the layouts of the following stoping methods: 1. sublevel stoping (longitudinal as well as transverse);2. DTH (Down-the-hole) stoping; and3. flat back cut and fill stoping with posts and pillars.Tatiya (1989) presented this work at the 21st symposium on the application of computers and operations research in the mineral industry (APCOM). Economic analysis of a stope is the additional feature incorporated with these algorithms.The system has been tested by an economic analysis of the three stoping methods modeled for a small portion of a deposit of a copper mining complex. The deposits at this mining complex form lenses of varying shapes and sizes, having low copper content. These chalcopyrite lenses are steeply inclined with a thickness in the range of 5 m to 60 m. The strata are competent and suitable for underground mining.In different sections of the mines different sets of equipment are used to perform the basic unit operations. Some of the ore handling levels in the mines are trackless, the rest are tracked."

"THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

Successful demonstration of The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was achieved in November 2004 at the pilot-scale, About 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in the DC arc furnace over a continuous operation of 8-days, Twenty-two furnace batching-tapping operations were carried out at a feed rate of 525kg/h and a smelting temperature of 1600-1700°C, The MgO content in the produced slag was as low as 6,7%, and averaged 9,2% MgO, resulting in an overall magnesium extraction of 77%, which reached 87% during good operating periods, Magnesium vapour was extracted at a rate of 70-85kg/h and was delivered to the condenser that was operated at 680-720°C, The magnesium was captured in the condenser crucible in a liquid state, allowing its prompt tapping, More than 3500kg of crude metal were produced over 15 on-line metal tapping operations, On average, a condensation efficiency of 85% was achieved during the entire testwork, which peaked at 87% during steady operations, The quality of the crude metal was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm's crude magnesium, A pre-feasibility study has indicated that the MTMP has the potential for lower capital and operating costs as compared to the electrolytic process, and therefore Mintek and its consortium partners are exploring opportunities for a commercial production facility.

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant?s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today?s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user?s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project?s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

With continually increasing energy prices, the mining industry has been on the search for new energy optimization technologies. One area that is garnering great interest is Ventilation-On-Demand (VOD). Prior to selection and implementation of a VOD solution, it is important to fully understand the mine requirements as well as its existing infrastructure and the interaction with other automation in place at the site. With this information, a business case can be generated including a cost versus benefit comparison for various control strategies. To assist in the development of the business case, this paper will identify key areas for consideration and recommendations for an implementation plan.

"The Aldermac copper deposit is in Beauchastel township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It lies about 11 miles west of Noranda. It has been described by Cooke, James, and Mawdsley(2) and by Bruce(3) and has been mapped in detail by W. Samuel and the late K. W. Fritzsche, former Mine Geologist, and by J . E. Gill and A. R. Byers, so that most of the particulars contained in the description that follows are largely the result of the work of others than the writer, whose connection with the deposit, in a consulting capacity, extended over the last 5 years of the life of the mine.According to A. V. Corlett, former Mine Manager, the property was staked during the early winter months of 1923 because of its location adjacent to the syenite intrusive that had been mapped by Cooke near the height-of-land in this township. An examination by Mr. Corlett in 1924 revealed mineralized zones to the north of MacKay lake, and in the vicinity of these K. W. Fritzsche, by dip needle and trenching, discovered the No. 1 and No. 2 deposits, which were both too small and too low grade for exploitation. During the winter of 1925, A. A. MacKay, with a dip needle, picked up a magnetic 'anomaly' in a drift-covered area about 600 feet to the north of previous workings. Trenching here revealed only a narrow zone of mineralization of little consequence, but, farther east, MacKay discovered a more pronounced 'anomaly' over what later drilling and underground work proved to be ore of commercial grade (No. 3 and No. 4 orebodies)."

Three dimensional (3D) seismic exploration has been carried out since the 1980s in the mining district of China, where it has been playing an indispensable role in the high yield and efficiency of coal mining. Unlike oil exploration, this technique uses high density seismic acquisition technology. In recent years, it has focused on wide azimuth 3D seismic acquisition. Evaluation of geometry moved away from depending on folds, azimuth and offset, toward being based upon a focus-ray beam. Conventionally, coalfield 3D seismic interpretation focused on time domain and was based on kinematics information, which is only suitable for less complex geological conditions. To achieve high-resolution processing for the complex topography and structure in coalfields, data processing shifted from poststack to prestack. The means to improve the accuracy of interpretation for complex geological conditions are 1) integration of multiple attributes and multiple disciplines, 2) combination of seismic and geological data, and 3) comprehensive combination of time domain and depth domain data. With the demand for lithological exploration, high-resolution data processing must also take into account the requirements of preserving amplitude in seismic data. Seismic attributes technology, seismic inversion technology, and dynamic tracking interpretation are key techniques in 3D seismic exploration. They greatly improve interpretation accuracy, produce better results in the goaf space description of the coal-bearing strata and coal seam structure, and effectively reduce exploration costs under complicated geological conditions. Therefore, these techniques will be the primary means employed in the future to deal with coalfield complex structure and lithological exploration.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities for the nickel industry, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTION The process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic. A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities. These suggestions are particularly applicable to the nickel industry, where the majority of our firm’s prior hydrometallurgical experience was obtained. This paper is an update to an earlier publication (Martin, 2004), offering an opportunity for a new generation of metallurgists and engineers to learn the specialist requirements of pilot- and demonstration-scale plant design, which are key functions in the development and commercialization of new processes."

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "Before getting into more specific aspects of my talk today I should put in one disclaimer - one week in Mainland China and one day with Premier Kosygin does not make me an expert on Sino-Soviet affairs nor on Canadian-Chinese relations. Perhaps though there is a message in the fact that one meeting took place in relative openness in China and the other was at least partly in a bullet-proof limousine in Canada. I thought it might be interesting and appropriate to explain something of the forest industry to you who are engaged in the mining industry. Our industry, like yours, is based on a natural resource and the basic activity that we engage in is the extraction and conversion of that resource into saleable materials. However, the fundamental difference between our industries is that our resource is on top of the ground - easily visible and easily measurable, whereas yours is under the ground - difficult to find and, having been found, expensive to measure. A second difference is that ours is renewable while yours is extractive, and you must keep finding more to keep up reserves."

The reliability of mine ventilation systems is critical to normal and safe production in a mine and includes reliability of the following parts: ventilation system branch (or passage), ventilation structures, ventilation network, and the fan. Among these, the reliability of a ventilation branch may be considered the foundation of the whole ventilation system. The branch ventilation flow includes four parameters: air volume; toxic and hazardous gas concentrations; temperature, and dust concentration. The calculation model for the reliability of a branch was established based on the analysis of normal distribution of flows in any one branch. Then, the efficiency of the ventilation structures and fire risk compromising the reliability of branch was studied. The results obtained were as follows: if the air volume, toxic and hazardous gas concentrations, temperature and coal dust concentrations of the branch are within reasonable limits, set at any stable state and at the same time, then this branch is reliable.

"INCO LIMITED'S Shebandowan Mine and Mill is located in a scenic tourist and cottage area near the western tip of Lower Shebandowan Lake, approximately 90 Km west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This nicely designed complex is a positive indication that mining operations can co-exist in harmony within the natural environment.The Shebandowan complex processed nickel-copper ore from 1973 to 1985, inclusive, after which operations were shut down.In late 1988, INCO LIMITED decided to place the Shebandowan complex back into operation, under contract, to mine and mill the remainder of the ore body, according to their specifications. MaclSAAC'S EXPLORATIONS was the successful bidder for the project. Following preliminary rehabilitation, operations were re-activated in late March, 1989. The ore mined to date is of a moderately lower nickel grade than the majority of previous years. However, a higher tonnage rate, combined with improved nickel recoveries, has contributed to a viable operation.A series of mill operating and equipment modifications has enabled MaclSAAC EXPLORATIONS to achieve the quality and grade of nickel-copper concentrates specified, and at the same time, expand mill tonnage throughput while attaining increased nickel recovenes."

"Inco's Little Stobie Mine is a low-grade nickel operation producing approximately 4()()() tons per day. Backfill has never been an economical option at the mine; therefore, the only viable type of mining in the upper zones has been by sub-level cave. This mining method allows for the draw-down of a rock cover into the empty stopes to provide stability to the over-all rock mass. In the lower areas of the mine, bulk blasthole mining methods have taken place, without rock fill, resulting in extremely large open stopes. As the mine reaches its final stage of recovery, it is inevitable that the hangingwall of the large voids will undergo tensile failure via spoiling.This paper deals with the collaborating efforts of Inco's Rock Mechanics group and the Little Stobie mining operations toward the successful recovery of the ore zone remnants such that the inevitable failure, and time of failure, of the rock mass is ""controlled"". Within the mining scheme, several key requirements had to be met to satisfy the operations: (1) production rates; (2) good blast fragmentation; and (3) secure pulling-horizons. A full-scale rock mechanics study was carried out involving: numerical modelling studies; pulling ellipse analyses; blast design, monitoring and analyses; laser profiling; and time domain rej7ectometry (TDR) instrumentation. The final recovery scheme, employing a controlled failure, involves recommendations on: (1) blasting techniques; (2) support systems; (3) mining sequences and scenarios; and (4) monitoring systems."

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). PUBLIC debts, and the policies guiding public finance in Canada today, are in such a state that every intelligent citizen should be familiar with them, and should be concerned about them. None of you have robe reminded that taxes have already risen to a point where they both annoy and hurt you, but they should also alarm you; alarm you, not so much because of the taxation, but because of the mounting expenditures represented by that taxation. I have no hesitation, therefore, in presenting a paper dealing with public finance at a meeting of the Mining Institute, since all present are concerned,. both as individuals and as representatives of the industry. Moreover, it is important that engineers, particularly, should become better acquainted with the interlocking relationships of economics, public finance, government, and technology. While I am neither an economist, a tax expert, nor a chartered accountant, I shall try to tell you, from my viewpoint as an engineer and an interested voter, the story of public finance in Canada today and of certain causes and effects, and I shall venture certain conclusions. In doing so I may merit criticism by experts, but I will risk this in the hope that sufficient interest will be stimulated in the subject to persuade you, as individuals and as groups, to advance, or to institute, your own studies in public finance, and in turn to interest others. I hope that some of the ideas which will be expressed, or which may develop, will bear fruit. I fully realize that several eminently qualified men have spoken on this subject during recent months, and that many authoritative articles have been written. However, I approach it with confidence, because I propose speaking to you not as an authority, bur as one of you, having similar interests and similar engineering knowledge, who only a few months ago became particularly interested in the subject, studied it, and who now sets before you a summary of his findings, with the conviction that the situation is so serious that constructive planning and constructive action by all thinking citizens are imperative.

Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. Based on this rapidly increasing tempo of achievements you can make your own extrapolations into the future."

The St. John Del Rey Mining Company, Limited, is an English company owning 150 square miles -of mining lands near Belo Horizonte, Minas Geraes, Brazil. The area is 2,300 to 5,000 feet above sea level, with a pleasant and healthy climate. Bedrock is Precambrian. The Nova Lima series of metamorphosed sediments and some volcanics is overlain uncomfortably by the Minas series of quartzites, itabirites. etc. Batholithic granite and gneiss cut both series and basic dykes cut all these rocks. There are important deposits of gold, iron, and manganese on the Company's holdings, as well as occurrences of arsenic, antimony, cobalt, nickel, dolomite, day, quartz, -ochre, bauxite, kyanite, and asbestos. Except for gold and consequent recovery of arsenic, all the other materials are relatively unexploited. The Company operates the Morro Velho gold mine and the Espirito Santo and Raposos gold mine. The Morro Velho mine was purchased in 1834 for £56,000. To the end of 1952 it had produced 7,000,000 troy ounces of gold from 15,000,000 short tons of ore. The ore z?ones are replacement deposits in a sinuous siliceous dolomitic rock locally termed "lapa seca," and plunge east, near surface at 45 °, at 8,000 feet at 15°. The ore minerals are pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Gold is finely distributed and almost nowhere visible. Ore reserves at the end of 1952 were estimated at 5.5 million short tons grading 0.39 oz. gold per ton. Chances exist for new ore within the mine area. The Espirito Santo and Reposos mine, in folded banded iron formation, has mineralization similar to Morro Velho but sulphides are less abundant. The mine to a depth of 2,500 feet has estimated ore reserves of 1.5 million tons of an average grade of 0.28 oz. gold per ton. New ore may be expected both laterally and at depth. To the end -of 1952, the ?Company had paid dividends of almost £4,- 600,000, largely earned from the operation of the gold mines.
