Discovered in 2014, the Arrow Uranium Deposit has undergone rapid development through successive drilling programs informed by geostatistical drill hole spacing studies. An independent third-party geostatistical drill hole spacing study was completed by Clayton V. Deutsch Consultants Inc. in 2017, evaluating the uncertainty of thickness, grade, density, and areal limit of the Arrow Deposit to determine a drill hole spacing suitable for Indicated Mineral Resources. Indicated spacing was defined to be 24 to 32 metres (“m”) to be within 15% of predicted for a nominal quarterly production volume with a probabilistic tolerance between 75 and 90%. The study not only defined the Indicated Mineral Resource resultant from the 2016 drill program, but also provided drill hole targeting criteria for subsequent drill programs aiming to convert Inferred to Indicated Mineral Resources. A subsequent geostatistical drill hole spacing study on the Arrow Deposit was completed by Clayton V. Deutsch with Resource Modeling Solutions in December 2018 to define Measured Mineral Resource spacing in support of the 2019 drill campaign. The study resulted in a drill hole spacing of 9 to 17 m to be within 15% of predicted for monthly and quarterly production volumes using an accepted industry probabilistic tolerance of 90%.

This paper reports on an energy efficiency analysis completed as part of a research project looking at energy reduction opportunities in minerals processing operations. The plant discussed is a gold production facility owned by Newmont Gold in the Tanami region of central Australia. Due to its remote location, lack of nearby gas pipeline or power grid, the operation has been completely dependent on diesel fuel for its electricity generation and transport needs. The mine and processing plant use electrical power at a rate of 12MW to 18MW, resulting in a monthly electricity cost of over US$1.5M. The high cost of diesel combined with an impending power generation capacity shortage drove Newmont to undertake the energy efficiency study. An energy audit of the plant showed opportunities for significant energy savings through the strategic use of waste heat, fuel replacement alternatives and renewable energy sources.

ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

"THE OBJECT of these notes is to initiate a discussion among the members of our Institution on the connotation of the term 'ore', and to arrive, if possible, at an acceptable definition of the term in the light of its current use by our leading mining engineers, metallurgists, •and geologists.The majority of •authors of well-known modern text-books on subjects dealing with mineral deposits define 'ore' in words which convey the meaning that it is an aggregate of minerals from which one or more metals can, under favourable conditions, be extracted profitably.Many eminent members of the Institution, and of mining and metallurgical institutions in other countries, consider that the term should not be restricted to metalliferous mineral •deposits but can also be applied correctly to certain non-metallic deposits. They believe that the growth, during the twentieth century, in the industrial importance of non-metallic minerals, and the progress made in the mining and the milling of deposits containing such minerals by methods similar to those used for metalliferous mineral deposits, no longer justify the academic restriction of the term to deposits worked for their metal content only."

"We present detailed comparisons between theoretical predictions and experiments for the initiation of radial hydraulic fractures transverse to a wellbore. Most of these experiments provide a measure of the time evolution of pressure, length, opening and flux entering the fracture during the test. We compare all these measurements simultaneously to our theoretical predictions, thoroughly testing hydraulic fracture initiation theory, which is shown to be predictive. These comparisons notably emphasize the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure for which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during the test). INTRODUCTION In this paper, we will compare hydraulic fracturing laboratory experiments performed in different tight materials (PMMA, cement, shale) with the predictions from a numerical solution of the governing equations of hydraulic fracture mechanics (e.g. Geerstma & de Klerk, 1969; Detournay & Peirce, 2014). We focus on transverse radial hydraulic fractures initiating from a radial notch at the wellbore wall (see Figure 1). In particular, we will clarify the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure at which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during a test, usually carried out at constant pump rate). This difference stems from the strong viscous effects at play during wellbore pressurization, fracture initiation and early propagation (i.e. fluid entrance in the newly created fracture). It has been observed on a number of experiments (e.g. Weijers, 1995; Zhao et al., 1996) and has a strong practical application, first because the maximum pressure is the most obvious value to report and second because that maximum value is necessary to specify injection systems."

Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution. In this plant, the yellow cake (a high-grade sodium or ammonium uranate) was dis- solved in HNO,, and uranium was selec- tively extracted by ether then stripped by water to give a concentrated solution of pure uranyl nitrate. This was gradually followed by developing methods for other high-priced metals such as plutonium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, boron, beryllium, and molybde num. The second step took place in the 1960s when solvent extraction was applied for the first time to extract a rela- tively cheap metal-copper. At present, solvent extraction technology is wide- spread, well accepted, and highly efficient. "Material substitution occurs continuously in response to competitive and economic pressures. Technical development can accelerate or slow substitution by improving the performance of the invading or defending material. The choices are seldom simple and have to be made in the context of continuous commercial change.The development and commercialization of a new aluminum material is examined. The material has been introduced into· several different markets, so it is possible to compare and contrast the degree of success obtained in each.IntroductionAluminum-based materials have been in use for over one hundred years and , therefore, the development of a new family of alloys is rare. In the early 1970s, Dr. L.R. Morris and his coworkers at Alcan' s Kingston Research Centre started work on what was, at the time, something of a scientific curiosity-a family of alloys strengthened by an unusual mechanism.This paper deals with the development and commercialization of what became known as the Alcan 255 alloys"". These alloys have found uses in several markets, usually as improved substitutes for existing materials. Forecasting the usefulness of a substitute material in an existing marketplace is difficult, in part, because even material users are seldom able to specify precisely their requirements. This uncertainty can cause the failure of some substitutions but can also lead to opportunities which were not initially obvious.Technical BackgroundPure aluminum is a soft, weak material. It can be strengthened by the addition of various alloying elements and by work hardening. Alloying elements usually act by forming solid solutions which are stronger than the pure metal or by precipitating during heat treating or aging and so preventing the easy movement of dislocations during deformation. Elements which can perform either role had been investigated for decades and were thought to offer little chance of technical breakthrough in 1970. An outgrowth of the then new and exciting research on directional solidification seemed, however, to offer such promise.Some aluminum-iran-manganese alloys will solidify under certain conditions as 'coupled growth' eutectics (Figs. I and 2). The microstructure shows one phase growing as long rods through the other. This is an uncommon structure and it was investigated to see if it had equally unusual properties. On deformation by rolling the rods were broken up into small equiaxed , evenly-spaced particles (Fig. 3). Materials with this structure were found to be stronger than other alloys with similar amounts of alloying addition, and to resist thermal softening remarkably well. This combination of properties was thought initially to be due directly to the particles by a dispersion strengthening mechanism, but later this was found not to be strictly true."

"This paper summarizes the results of numerical studies on drift stability in moderately jointed rock masses. It investigates the relative pertinence of geomechanical factors such as joint orientation, spacing and stress regime. This is undertaken using a distinct element model and a series of parametric studies. IntroductionIn evaluating the stability of drifts in jointed rock, it is often necessary to compromise by employing models that capture the complexity of the rock mass, but which are still simple enough to allow for their routine implementation. The distinct element method can arguably provide an eloquent method to accomplish this. This paper explores the applicability of the method by means of a parametric study aiming to identify the dominant factors that influence the stability of drifts in moderately jointed rock. To this end a commercially available 2D distinct element numerical model was used. A series of techniques are presented in an effort to quantify the results of any instability predicted by the model.This paper also demonstrates a case study where a 3D joint network model was integrated into the distinct analysis software package. The advantages, as well as the current limitations of this approach, are discussed."

The two largest contributors to silicosis in machine men are dust from drilling and dust from blasting. With the advent of the shatter-cut method of blasting, the evils of blasting dust were greatly reduced. The problem of dust from drilling has been attacked from two different angles: (1) The adoption of dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes, both of which have proved capable of reducing dust concentrations; and (2) The adoption of better ventilation. Many operators are loath to adopt dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes on Leyner drills because of the increased repair costs on drills, and also because it has been found difficult to enforce 'the proper usage of dustless machines: for example, workmen sometimes plug the vents in the fronthead.

As high grade nickel sulphide ores are being depleted and with the continuing challenges experienced in economically processing nickel laterite ores, it is important to investigate technologies that can extract nickel from low grade ultramafic ores which are present in large quantities worldwide. In the Thompson Nickel Belt, there are some hundred million tonnes of mineralization that are potentially amenable to surface mining. Since the original discovery of the Thompson orebody, recovery of nickel from these ultramafic deposits has been an elusive goal. Research and development projects as well as commercial processing have been attempted. In the 2000's as other resources became scarcer, a major drilling, mine evaluation and research project was initiated at Vale. In 2007, Vale Base Metals Technology Development invited Cytec and potential academic partners to participate in an industry-university research consortium with the goal of developing new technologies and methods of processing the ultramafic deposits. Three university professors, J. Finch of McGill, P. Somasundaran of Columbia and R. Pelton of McMaster accepted, each group attacking the problem with a different approach. This paper describes the management of the research consortium and the significance of the results from Vale's perspective. The next four papers in this session will summarize the project and results from the partners' point of view. Vale is pleased to share the experience of the collaborative research and development with the mining industry.

Introduction Air conditioning is a term which has come into common use only during our generation. By definition, it means the positive and accurate control of temperature, humidity, movement, purity, and component constituents of the atmosphere within an enclosure. Claiming such results for Noranda's ventilation system, or for that of any other large mine, at present would be an idle boast. However, we are working toward that end with considerable success. Modern underground ventilation at Noranda dates back about six years. The later development of air conditioning is in its fourth season, but still in the experimental stage. Various ingenious methods have been devised to cool mines which, because of climatic or geological conditions or depth, are excessively warm. A few installations have been made to warm intake air during the winter months where this is necessary. However, the method currently in use at Noranda is unique in that it accomplishes both ends by one process. This method utilizes the freezing and melting of ice to equalize year-round temperatures. Mining Methods While a discussion of mining methods at Noranda is not proposed in this paper, a brief summary may be in order. The Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited, has been developed by six shafts, four of which are now active. The most recent, an internal shaft, extends to 6,000 feet below surface, but all of the ore mined to date has come from above the 3,000-foot level. Figure 1 shows a model of principal ore bodies. The area mined is relatively small in plan, considering its vertical extent and the tonnage per vertical foot. Most of the ore lies within an ellipse about 600 by 1,000 feet. While this has certain advantages, the mining of such massive orebodies has presented many problems.

The McClean Lake Mill is located approximately 850 kilometres north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and is operated by Orano Canada Inc. (Orano). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and a multi-year expansion was completed in 2014 to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum. The mill also underwent various upgrades to allow it to safely transition from processing low grade ores to high grade ores from the nearby Cigar Lake Mine. During the metallurgical test work on the Cigar Lake ores, it was identified that some ore zones of the deposit have a propensity to generate hydrogen gas during acid leaching. Hydrogen is a volatile and explosive gas, which poses obvious safety concerns in the leaching circuit. Uranium processing is further complicated by the fact that an oxidant in the form of oxygen gas or hydrogen peroxide is required to regenerate iron in the leach, which further increases the risk posed by hydrogen gas. During 2013 Orano and its consultant Hatch designed and engineered several novel upgrades to the leaching circuit to mitigate the risk of hydrogen gas evolution in the process. Best in class technology was utilized in addition to control and operating strategy changes to ensure the leaching circuit could be safely operated with ores that evolve hydrogen gas. This paper reviews the design concepts and modifications implemented on this unique and challenging project, and also provides an update on the operational reality of hydrogen in the circuit gained through five years of operational experience with hydrogen evolving ores.

"This paper describes a ventilation project at the Wassa gold mine in Ghana. Golden Star (Wassa) (GSWL), a subsidiary of Golden Star Resources, owns and operates the mine. Golden Star holds a 90% interest in GSWL, while the Ghanaian Government holds the remaining 10% ownership, earning a 5% royalty on the gross revenue of GSWL’s gold production. Construction of the underground mine began in mid-2015 and pre-commercial production started in June 2016. Commercial production from the underground mine was achieved in January 2017. This paper describes the ventilation studies performed to support the initial development and production at the mine. The initial ventilation design included four, parallel surface exhaust fans. Future designs will include booster fans, new primary fans, and additional connections to surface. The paper describes the long-term ventilation planning goals and expectations as the mine achieves a production of 4,000 tpd with truck haulage to surface.INTRODUCTIONThe Wassa Gold Mine is located in the southern portion of the Ashanti Greenstone Gold Belt in Ghana, northwest of Tarkwa as shown in Figure 1. The mine has been in production as an open pit since 1998, with some minor disruptions, but the surface minable reserves have become exhausted and the mine started a transition to an underground operation in 2015. The underground mine was initially developed with twin decline accesses extending from the base of the open pit to the mining areas. The mining method selected was sub-level open stoping with cemented rock backfill. The original production level for the mine was 2,500 tpd with ore and waste transported by trucks hauling in the ramps to surface. In 2017 the production goal was set to increase to approximately 4,000 tpd. This resulted in an increase in the truck haulage fleet in addition to a significant increase in ventilation requirements. This paper describes the ventilation upgrades at the mine as it transitioned from a surface to an underground operation and the adjustments the ventilation system needed to make in order to accommodate a significant increase in production"

"We present some of our recent efforts in the development of predictive, directed oxidation chemistry of cerium(III) complexes under non-aqueous conditions. The electrochemistry of cerium(III)- alkali metal heterobimetallic aryloxide complexes is reported and compared with cerium aryloxide complexes that are kinetically stabilized by hydrogen bonding cations that span between the complexed aryloxide ligands. Comparative electrochemical measurements reveal differences between the heterobimetallic complexes and the hydrogen-bonded complexes.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements comprise the lanthanides, La–Lu, and the element yttrium (Aspinall, 2001). Rare earth ores such as monazite, LnPO4, and bastnäsite, LnFCO3, typically bear mixtures of light rare earths: La–Sm while monazite, LnPO4, contains mixtures of heavy rare earths (Eu–Lu) (Cotton, 2006). Pure rare earth elements typically are isolated using a liquid-liquid separations process.(Bautista, 1995) The hydrometallurgy of these elements is a difficult problem because the separation factors between neighboring rare earths, which are predicated on the small differences in the sizes of the trivalent ions, are quite small (Cox, 1992). The element cerium, with its 4f1 electronic configuration in the trivalent state, is unique among the rare earth elements due to a relatively accessible 4f0 electronic configuration. The accessibility of the 4f0 configuration underlies the chemistry of cerium(IV), the only rare earth ion with molecular chemistry in the tetravalent oxidation state (Cotton, 2006). Cerium is trivially separated from mixtures of light rare earths by making use of its unique oxidation chemistry. In an effort to extend separations chemistry by oxidation reactions to other rare earth elements such as terbium and praseodymium, the solution electrochemistry of well-defined cerium complexes is of interest."

Introduction I am indebted for most of the information in this paper to Mr. P. S. Lea, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines of Great Britain, and Mr. A. E. Crook, Engineering Inspector of Mines, Ministry of Fuel and Power. Other coal-mining men in Canada may be as surprised as I was to learn that there are twenty-five Diesel locomotives in service underground in British gassy coal mines. Many more are in use underground in non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Approval has been granted for an additional fifty flame-proof locomotives to be used in gassy mines, and these should be in operation by the end of 1946, or as soon as manufacturing facilities permit.

Slope problems arise on mining properties from cuts for roads and railroads and from open pits. When it is 'realized that 1,000,000 extra tons of waste may have to be mined as a result of an average slope being reduced by 1 ° it is easy to appreciate that the slope problems connected with open pits are of far greater importance than the others. The type of slope failure that can occur can be classified in different ways. The most useful classification would be one that separates the causes in such a way as to provide a basis for studies to deal with problems of prevention and control. Using this criterion the types of slope failures are classified into four groups. Having classified the problems in this way an understanding can be gained of the various mechanisms involved in failure ..

THIS paper summarizes the results of investigations carried out at Sydney Mines, N.S., and at Ottawa, following the disaster at Princess colliery, December 6th, 1938. The Honourable Minister of Mines for Nova Scotia appointed A. E. Cameron special investigator to enquire into and report upon the cause of the rope failure. Public hearings were held in Sydney Mines and evidence taken from many witnesses. The site of the accident was examined in detail and investigations made of the rope layout and colliery practice. At the request of the special investigator, the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa, kindly undertook technical and scientific examination of the broken ends of the rope. These investigations were carried out in the Metallurgical Laboratories of the Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of G. S. Farnham, Metallurgist for the Department. Valuable assistance in interpretation of many features of the investigation was received from other sources. Acknowledgment is due to Messrs. A thermohydrodynamic computer code has been used to simulate dust explosions. For sulphide dusts, the thermodynamic predictions are used to investigate the effect of dust concentration, mineral content and inert materials as well as the quantity of sulphur dioxide produced. It was found that the amount of oxygen available for the explosion is very important and that the dust concentration which gives maximum explosion pressures is obtained at zero or slightly negative oxygen balance values. The sulphide minerals were found to have the following explosibility sequence: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, covellite, chalcocite and galena, which is in agreement with mine experience. The results show that theoretical calculations can be used to predict explosion pressures and toxic gases produced by a dust explosion and therefore they can assist in the design of protective measures .

"Two recent decisions by the Canadian courts could reduce the taxes paid by many profitable mines in Canada. At a time when the mining sector is hurting from an ever increasing tax burden and soft prices, the results of two cases are welcome news. Mining companies are well advised to check prior years' tax returns in the context of these developments. IntroductionSince 1976, the income tax legislation has provided a reduced rate of tax for taxpayers engaged in the mining of mineral resources, through the mechanism of the ""resource allowance"". The deduction given for the resource allowance effectively reduces the federal rate of tax by one quarter on resource profits. In general terms, ""resource profits"" are defined to include a taxpayer's income from: the production and processing in Canada of ore to any stage that is not beyond the prime metal stage (or the pellet stage or its equivalent in the case of iron ore); and, royalties computed with reference to the amount of value of production from mining operations in Canada.In computing income from these sources, the taxpayer must deduct expenses that may reasonably be regarded as applicable to those sources, with the exception of expenditures for Canadian exploration and development or financing costs.As a result of the mechanics of the calculation of the resource allowance, one quickly realizes that the lower the expenses deducted from the resource profits, the higher the resource profits and consequently the higher the 25% resource allowance. The impact of the recent court cases is to narrow the range of expenses which are required to be deducted in the determination of the resource profits.The two cases are outlined below."
