As mines become deeper, the problems of heat in the workplacebecome more acute. An important response from the industry hasbeen the widespread adoption of microclimate cooling such asair-conditioned cabins. However, not all work in mines can becompleted from inside an air-conditioned cabin, and in any event,it is still important to keep the ambient air in the mine outside ofany microclimate to a safe temperature. An important method forbringing workplace temperatures under control is the appropriateuse of refrigeration. The application of refrigeration inmechanised mines has been recently described (Brake, 2001;Brake and Fulker, 2000). This paper provides an overview ofsome of the important engineering considerations in thespecification and selection of mine refrigeration plants. Thepurpose is to provide a basic understanding of refrigerationprinciples, practices, terminology, hazards and opportunities formining engineers or other personnel who may need to beinvolved in the introduction of refrigeration onto a mine site.

The purpose of this paper is to therefore investigate the hydrogeological characteristics of tailings, coarse and mixed rejects from coal processing to enable better understanding of the potential for undrained behaviours in coal mine spoil piles. This is achieved by analysing the results from permeability and oedometer testing of tailings, coarse rejects and mixtures thereof. Focus is given to the effect that tailings content has on the behaviour of mixed rejects, the transition point between drained and undrained material behaviours, and the evolution of properties with increasing stress that would occur with increased depth of burial in a mine spoil pile. The implications of the findings are discussed with respect to spoil pile stability.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. The PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) operation is a large scale coalmine operating on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. Originally developed under a coal contract of work (CCOW) with the Indonesian Government, new legislation has led to uncertainty as to the actual life of the mine, the size of the operating lease or mining area, the rehabilitation compliance requirements and other areas of concern. The actual life-of-mine (LOM) plan is therefore in a constant state of flux and must be updated and modified with every new piece of information.Under the CCOW system, the mine life ran from the first year of production (1992) for 30 years (2021), with the potential to extend for a further two ten-year periods. KPC has always intended to run until at least 2041. Under the new legislation, the potential term of the CCOW (to be replaced by a mining license) is open to interpretation, resulting in KPC having to prepare plans allowing for a LOM that may end in 2021, 2031, 2041 or a range of other possible periods of time.Uncertainty about legislation (and hence the mine life) possible production rates and available work areas; variable coal prices and costs; varying management contexts; the substantial reserves available; difficulty sourcing dump space; potential rehabilitation costs and the dependence of a community of over 100 000 people on a single operation sees the LOM and mine closure teams preparing dynamic yet thoroughly robust plans that are updated on multiple occasions per year.This paper will describe the procedure followed by KPC and the potentially show stopping issues that must be dealt with.CITATION:Bennett, S M and Manege, I, ?2014. Most Geologists have a well rounded knowledge of the exploration phase and those who have worked as mine geologists have an understanding of the production phase. Few have had exposure to the development and the construction phases. Even fewer have had the experience of closing a mine, disposing of the plant and equipment, carrying out the final cleanup and making the area safe and environmentally acceptable.During the various phases of exploration, the geoscientist gains a wealth of non-geological information which can be of considerable value to engineers and technicians in the feasibili-ty, development, operation phases and finally the closure of a project. Such basic controls as surveys, adopted assay sample lengths and the location of items of infrastructure during exploration, may continue to affect the project through its entire life. Thus the geologist's responsibilities extend well beyond the explo-ration phase of a project.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. "As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Unraveling geological complexity and understanding geological risk are critical components of the challenge that face any mining or exploration venture. This understanding is essential to the successful selection of mineralised domains on which grade estimation relies, so knowledge of the geological characteristics of the mineralised domains is vitally important. æNuggetyÆ mineralisation introduces a higher level of risk and geological observation and intuition may be the only option to ensure that opportunities are realised and ore/waste characterisation is undertaken successfully. Mineralisation at the world class Sunrise Dam gold mine contains a significant coarse gold component, which has necessitated the development of a systematic visual approach to decision making that enables geological staff to determine the potential gold grade in the absence of assay results, and in those instances when assay results appear implausible. The development of the Mineralisation (MZ) Code at Sunrise Dam has assisted in reducing the risk of misclassifying ore as waste and enabled geological control to prevail with confidence where complexity and ambiguity existed.

The Mt Whaleback iron ore mine is located adjacent to Newman, approximately 1200 km north of Perth, in the Pilbara District of Western Australia. Approximately 15 per cent of the waste materials are in the zones with high concentrations of sulfide and carbonaceous minerals and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. The reactive shale has the potential to undergo self-heating and can react with the ammonium nitrate (AN) based explosives used in mining operations, resulting in spontaneous combustion and spontaneous explosion. The sulfide-rich shales also have the potential to produce acid rock drainage (ARD). In the present study, over 200 shale samples have been collected from different locations in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine, including blasthole drill cuttings, fresh mine faces and waste dumps. These samples have been systematically characterised for their geochemical properties. Based on the characterisation results, a pH test was developed as a cost-effective, fast and efficient tool for the assessment of reactive ground in the mining industry. This paper summarises the results of the sample characterisations and discusses the key findings arising from the interpretation of results. These results have significant implications in the safe storage of the reactive shales and the prevention of spontaneous explosion, spontaneous combustion and ARD.

South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

The five main ways in which coal is used are1. for electricity generation,2. as a lump fuel for domestic and industrial purposes,3. for gas making,4. for making carbon for chemical and metallurgicalindustry, and5. as a source of coal tar and coal-tar chemicals.In the past about 80 per cent of Victoria's brown coal has been used for power generation and the rest for making a lump fuel, in the form of briquettes. Some of these briquettes have been used for gas making, and a carbon industry based on them has recently been commenced, and could expand rapidly. However the enormous increases expected in power requirements, approximately a doubling every 10 years, will ensure that even if the manufacture of carbon increases dramatically and a large amount of coal is used for other purposes, the brown coal industry will always be dominated by power generation. As new fuels such as natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel become available at competitive prices these will take their share of the power generation load.Natural gas or oil, or possibly pumped storage hydro, will almost certainly be used for all future peak-load stations, comprising around 40 per cent of the total installed generating capacity, but new base load stations will continue to be designed for brown coal operation until about the mid-1980s, by which time nuclear power stations will become competitive. By this time Victoria will have installed about 6000 MW capacity of brown coal stations, burning around 50 million tons/year of coal, compared with 18 million tons/year at present, with perhaps 15 million tons/year being used for other purposes.This consumption of 65 million tons/year should then remain fairly stable over the life of the power stations installed, well into the 21st century. Brown coal therefore appears to have an assured place in providinga major part of Victoria's fuel requirements, despite the diversification in fuel usage pattern which appears certain to occur with the recent developments in new fuel resources.

Access to land for exploration, development and mining purposes is extremely critical to the viability of the mining industry and subsequently the well being of society.The mining industry has been subject to environmental controls and considerations for the past 20 years. Today there is greater land use competition and more debate as to its use. To retain reasonable access the mining industry must comply with the rules and regulations by which it is governed.A new set of rules and regulations have been approved for use in Queensland, known as the Mineral Resources Act 1989. This Act clearly outlines the titles available and the requirements to obtain access.There are three main titles of interest to mining companies. These are an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence and a Mining Lease.The Exploration Permit (EP) is for exploration purposes. Applications for EP's are assessed on their content and past performances. An EP is granted subject to a security deposit and conditions. Prior to entry the EP holder is required to inform the land owner of the proposed activities and times of entry.

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. This paper studies the grinding behaviour of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate in a ball mill. The grinding kinetics, surface morphology, lattice distortion, wettability and moisture capacity were analysed. Grinding kinetics equation was established based on population balances model with the size distribution data from a laser diffraction technique. The SEM photos of the ground concentrate showed that the surface gets rough with increasing grind time. Agglomeration of fine particles was enhanced when the grinding time reached 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction results showed that a loss in crystalline occurred with increasing the grinding time. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction patterns are significantly broadened with increasing grinding time. Wettability, characterised by contact angle between the material and water, improved due to the fact that the surface roughness increased with increasing grinding time. Moisture capacity of concentrate ascends abruptly in the first three minutes and then changed slowly with increasing grinding time. Social licence to operate is not a new concept for the mining industry, referring to stakeholder approval or acceptance for the activities and impacts of a project, company or industry. It is intangible, dynamic and non-permanent, hence it needs to be earned and then maintained (Thomson and Boutilier, 2014). It has also been argued that social licence extends beyond building approval or acceptance, into engagement for long-term development (Owen and Kemp, 2012).There are many examples where stakeholder opposition – or withdrawal of social licence – have increased capital and operating costs, extended schedules and impacted reputation. At its extreme, the withdrawal of social licence to operate can also contribute to or be the catalyst for mine closure.The key benefit of obtaining a social licence is a reduction of risk. Stakeholder support and advocacy, as well as the implementation of social performance programs that contribute to social licence, can be beneficial in terms of schedule, costs and other benefits.While decisions to close a mine are generally driven by resource availability or economic conditions, the social, economic and environmental legacy remaining post-closure is of importance to many stakeholders. With a number of significant mines now approaching closure within Australia, we are seeing heightened community concern about the economic and social impact of mine closure and the success of land rehabilitation. Dry milling circuits that include high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical roller mills (VRM) and air classification have replaced dry ball milling in cement production, but how do they compare to wet milling and classification circuits in mineral processing plants? Two case studies are presented that compare the energy efficiency, wear, liberation and capital cost of dry and wet milling circuits. In both case studies the VRM and HPGR consume half the energy of a wet tumbling mill for the same duty. However, the dry classification system tends to significantly erode the energy benefits. A number of improvement opportunities are presented that have the potential to improve the energy and capital efficiency of dry milling circuits. These improvement opportunities focus on the dry classification system that consumes significant energy in heating and fan power requirements and requires a large proportion of the footprint.

"The Telfer processing plant commissioned its pyrite regrind and flotation circuit in August 2012. The circuit was designed to regrind pyrite concentrate to a p80 of <30µm then float a gold and copper rich concentrate before tails from the flotation circuit fed the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit downstream. Expected benefits were: improved CIL performance that would result from the finer grind and a reduction in cyanide soluble copper to the CIL circuit, as well as a small increase in overall flotation circuit recovery. While the benefits of a finer grind were soon realised, recovery in the post-regrind flotation circuit (named the ‘pyrite recleaner circuit’) was consistently and significantly lower than that expected based on laboratory test work. Selectivity in the pyrite recleaner circuit was virtually nil and copper reporting to the CIL circuit did not change as a result of the pyrite recleaner circuit operation.A pulp chemistry survey of the plant and comparison with the lab showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) demand in the plant was much higher than that in the lab. Lab flotation tests conducted using nitrogen gas instead of air resulted in recoveries similar to those from the plant. It was identified that the freshly ground pyrite surfaces exiting the regrind mill were consuming oxygen in the slurry and there was insufficient oxygen available for collector adsorption and pyrite depression to occur. Test work, using a pilot regrind mill, showed that a reduction in grind size resulted in an increase in DO demand.A range of oxidising agents were tested in the laboratory and using a pilot flotation rig set-up in the plant. Oxygen was found to be the most reliable and effective agent and options for increasing oxygen delivery to the plant were explored. There are several technologies available for thickening and dewatering of mining process slurries. The most commonly used are thickeners and filters, but technological developments have made solid bowl decanter centrifuges a viable option and their use, as a modern and alternative technology, is being considered more and more. In terms of tailings, the main goal for all mine operations is to minimize operating costs and the environmental impact of the disposed material. The high potential risk of wet tailings storage in tailings dams is causing this technology to become unpopular, and there is a strong drive in many parts of the world, by governments, communities and environmental agencies to limit any further construction and use of such facilities. For the alternative disposal method of dry disposal of tailings, two aspects of the process have to be evaluated, namely the maximum dryness of the separated solids and the maximum liquid recovery. For most mining operations dry disposal is a new concept. Presenting these companies with examples of operations where this processing option has been successfully applied and proven, will help them to adapt to the changing requirements in the future. Focus has been placed on adapting decanter centrifuges to the mining environment. Modern decanters stand out in terms of their small footprint, low water demand, high availability and their high degree of automation, combined with the excellent cost / performance ratio. Decanter centrifuges have started to play a key role in applications such as tailing dewatering, drilling and tunnelling muds processing, hydrometallurgical processes of gold, nickel or zinc and separating crud in solvent extraction plants. This paper will present advantages of decanter centrifuges compared to the traditional technology and corroborate these advantages by case studies.
