The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will include 2.1 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels, 500 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and tunnel portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek, which is incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The resulting topography, geology and hydrogeology of the tunnel alignment are complex.The Assessment of Effects required estimation of the likely settlements resulting from the tunnel construction and assessment of their effects on the buildings, services and other features. A conservative approach was taken when estimating settlements in order to provide an upper bound estimate of the consequent effects. There are three sources of these settlements: mechanical settlement from the tunnel excavation, mechanical settlement from the displacement of retaining walls and consolidation settlement from the groundwater drawdowns during construction and, in some cases, in the long-term.The settlements from these sources were calculated independently and then combined to identify the most critical effects. These combined settlements were used to assess the potential damage to the buildings, services and other features above and around the tunnels. The combined settlement results generally followed the anticipated trough shape centred on the underlying tunnel but with some noticeable effects relating to the underlying geology and hydrogeology.The effects on buildings were typically assessed as negligible with some areas of very slight to moderate damage predicted. Effects on services are anticipated to be minor but some large and older pipes will require specific monitoring during construction. A monitoring programme is proposed to allow the actual settlement and effects to be compared to those estimated with appropriate responses should those effects significantly differ.This paper describes the methods used to calculate and combine the settlements and assess their effects.

"Although it is well known and easily experienced that the feed size distribution influences the throughput and stability of operation of a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, the details are poorly understood since it is often only the input and output measurements that are used to identify unfavourable in-mill conditions. Load cells and power monitoring are sometimes used but are generally poor indicators of the mechanisms that lead to such unwanted conditions.At the MMG Century operation a 12-microphone array around the SAG mill using non-contact acoustic measurement methodology has been used to diagnose the in-mill conditions to facilitate improved throughput and stability of operation. Use of acoustic measurement and control has provided a demonstrated increased throughput of at least 20 per cent as well as improved stabilisation of the mill. Since the information derived from the acoustic noise from a mill allows discrimination of the behaviour of the steel balls and the rock, a number of in-mill conditions can be identified with signals that include toe and shoulder angles, water holdup and the ball to rock ratio.Feed size variations, measured online with an imaging system, have been used to determine their effect on the internal charge behaviour. It has been found that circumferential segregation of steel balls and rock occurs as well as poor mixing of large rocks. Both of these effects are not conducive to optimal breakage rates of different size fractions. Longitudinal segregation effects also occur. Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

The development of robust, economical transport infrastructure has been identified as a key driver to sovereign economic growth. Notwithstanding the value of undeveloped mineral resources, unless they can be brought to market they are of little value. Within a global context, the continent of Africa probably faces one of the most significant transport driven economic development programs as countries strive to unlock their much sought after resources.The UN’s Africa Review Report on Transport (United Nations Economic and Social Council, 2009) provides an excellent context for the issue facing African countries and the potential for investment in transport to solve many of the intrinsic problems they are confronted with. With little exception, economic development in Africa is very likely to be driven ‘off the back’ of transport development – and more specifically from heavy-haul rail as a means by which economic wealth can be derived from export of the continent’s vast natural and mineral resources to the world. The report found:transport is a key driver of economic development and poverty reduction;road transport is the most dominant mode in Africa;the ‘Cost to Market’ of African goods is hampered by the reliance upon road transport;the cost of road transport is not just economic – 19 per cent of the world’s road fatalities were recorded on African roads;African railways are seen to be disjointed and under-utilised;Africa’s ports are key to export trade - yet only six ports (three in Egypt, and three in South Africa) handle about 50 per cent of the continent’s total container traffic;the cost of transport is increasing making African trade even less competitive; andsignificant negative impacts of Africa’s reliance on road transport – health, and greenhouse emissions.We understand that mining the resource is only part of the solution – it has to be put to market at a competitive landed cost.Most African countries face huge costs associated with transport development and ongoing operation – in many cases beyond their available resources.The Australian rail industry has faced and solved many of these challenges.

In order to reduce carbon emissions from the steelmaking process and achieve carbon neutrality, global steel companies are establishing their own medium to long-term strategies and implementation plans using competitive technological advantages held by each steel company. At this point, Hyundai Steel has formulated a product-oriented carbon-neutral strategy based on innovative processing that makes use of Hyundai Steel’s own strength. Based on our experience in electric arc furnace product manufacturing and blast furnace operation in an integrated steel mill, Hyundai Steel is driving the Hy3 (Hy-cube) project, which involves a unique hybrid production system utilising hydrogen and hydrogen-based renewable energy sources. This initiative aims to achieve carbon-neutral production and eventually specialise in producing premium carbon-neutral automotive parts. The project has originality in that it involves not only designing processes using electric furnaces to produce premium steel products such as car body panels and electrical steel sheets, but also aims to reduce carbon emissions from the process, developing carbon-neutral products based on market demand. To assess the feasibility of the Hy3 project, Hyundai Steel conducted two pilot productions. The first pilot was producing a prototype of lower-arm part using electric arc furnace with three different kinds of raw materials: molten iron, HBI (hot briquetted iron), and scrap. Successful performance evaluation of auto parts with 1 GPa strength was achieved. The second pilot has been focused on tire cord steel, with the first-phase tests yielding a 33 per cent reduction in carbon footprint (CFP). Using the advantages of operating experience in electric arc furnace, Hyundai Steel is preparing for test operations producing various automotive parts using an electric arc furnace (EAF) to advance the Hy3 concept. From a medium to long-term technological development perspective, Hyundai Steel’s blueprint includes producing high-end carbon-neutral steel products using hydrogen-reduced iron as raw material.

This paper presents the scientific framework underpinning the resource valuation and optimisation model (RVOM). The RVOM is a partial differential equation based real options software package, which helps mine owners optimally plan their operations, understand their project risks, and make defensible valuations. This is achieved in the presence of both financial and physical uncertainty, as well as processing capacity constraints. The RVOM can be applied to any multi-ore mine, open pit or otherwise, where the block-order of extraction has already been planned using existing software tools such as the Gemcom WhittleÖ strategic mine planning package. The RVOM can also take account of multiple commodities within a single mine, and multiple forms of price behaviour. The three key outputs from the RVOM are: valuation, optimal decision and probability of decision. A decision takes account of upfront costs, and can include an unlimited number of transitions between: normal operation, expanded operation, care and maintenance and abandonment (and variants thereof). The RVOM then employs stochastic process theory to determine the probability of reaching these decisions. This gives the mine operators clear indications as to where their risks lie, aiding their mine planning. A clear example of the RVOMs usage to a case-study gold mine is presented, demonstrating its broad applicability, the added value it can create and how users can easily make use of the RVOMÆs state-of-the-art algorithmic engine.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s (AGAA) Tropicana gold mine (TGM) geology department seized the rare opportunity of building a new geology department for a new operation: the philosophy, the people and the processes. Not satisfied with the status quo, or simply repeating what was familiar and already known, the vision was for an innovative, agile, multidiscipline, high performance team, capable of delivering on expectations.To achieve this, the geology department has operationalised key components of human resource management (HRM).This paper describes the operational design and implementation of key HRM components: job analysis, organisational design and organisational development. The benefits of this approach are presented in terms of engagement and autonomy in roles, opportunity for role variety and flexibility of the organisational structure. The result is a geology department that provides the functions of mine geology, resource development, regional exploration, survey, data management, geographic information systems (GIS), resource modelling, scheduling, sample preparation, resource coordination and hydrogeology, and even geotechnical engineering for a year!Considerations for application in other geology departments are presented in terms of fundamental requirements and lessons learnt. Fundamental requirements for success have been the sustained support of the general manager, valuing the scrutiny that comes with continuous improvement, high quality HRM systems and tools within the organisation, and a committed leadership group within the department. This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. Centennial Coal operates the Springvale longwall mining operation which extracts coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale, and the neighbouring Angus Place mine, have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions where combinations of a relatively high stress regime and weak, laminated roof and extensive geological faulting has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life. Following development, the mines underground roadways can experience high levels of roof movement which may lead to roof falls. Multipoint wire extensometers are extensively used throughout the mine for roadway condition monitoring, and to reactively drive remedial strata support through trigger action response plans (TARPs).As a result of the use of high-density extensometer monitoring over a long period, the mines have an extensive archive of legacy data. Data processing has evolved over time in order to accommodate the increasing data volume, including direct data entry from the recently introduced hard-wired real-time monitoring instruments. It is likely that telemetric real-time instruments will be introduced in the future, which will cause another step change in data management requirements. This paper discusses the transition to and evolution of relational database management systems for extensometer and associated data.This paper also presents case studies of the use of a new software tool for reprocessing legacy data to enable time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. The software can be used proactively in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. It interfaces directly with the widely used ExtoChart database software and can be presented with scale drawings of geological and geotechnical data to allow correlation of monitoring data results with risk factors.CITATION:Corbett, P and Sheffield, P, 2015. The importance of crushers in the mining industry declined with the introduction and resultant dominance of AG and SAG based circuits, but the recent move to consider more energy efficient circuits has caused the industry to re-consider the role of crushers.Different types of comminution equipment have different efficiency in the way the energy is applied in the size reduction process. Because of the general trend towards more sustainable production processes and emission of carbon dioxide, energy use has become more important. To fully understand how crushers can contribute to optimising the energy application in comminution circuits, detailed models of process performance are required. Such models need to take into account the mechanical design factors and how the crusher performance changes in response to feed conditions, the control strategy utilised and the wear of the crusher liners.It is also critical to analyse the total circuit, not just the individual crushers. To fully understand the performance of the entire circuit, dynamic simulation should be applied. Without the holistic understanding of the total circuit and the incorporation of transient effects, the full circuit performance cannot be adequately determined and the true energy picture will not be quantified.Based on detailed mechanistic modelling of crushers by the authors and the application of dynamic simulation, the opportunities to optimise the use of crushers for energy efficiency are examined.

Computer programs for the storage, retrieval and use of basic thermodynamic and physical property data for chemical substances are described. Methods are presented for the collection, critical assessment and pre- processing of source data for files containing enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity data for 3000 compounds, enthalpy and excess entropy for 200 dilute solutions and critical propert- ies and vapour pressure for 600 compounds. Retrieval programs are discussed which allow the tabulation or plotting of many basic and derived thermodynamic properties for chemical substances or balanced reactions. Examples are given of the use of such data to infer the stability or corrosion resistance of materials and the feasibility, yield and heat release of reactions. A general purpose calculation program is discussed which allows the equilibrium compos- ition to be found for complex systems with many species and phases, using the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Methods of correction for non-ideal behaviour in these systems are discussed, as well as methods for fixing, maximizing or minimizing any desired property of the system. Examples are given of the simulation of various laboratory Experiments and industrial processes by this method.

Many deposits have been evaluated as potential block caves over the last 20 years due to the perceived benefit of low operating costs. However, block cave projects are typically capital intensive, with mass mining providing high throughput rates that required large investments in mining, processing and utilities infrastructure. While the key economic metrics in deciding to proceed with a caving project are typically net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return, these may not represent the best decision metrics for some companies. Where a caving project is competing for scarce capital amongst other projects in a company’s portfolio or where the caving project is the only project being evaluated by a company trying to raise capital, other metrics may be more appropriate. This paper explores the use of present value ratio and the minimising of maximum negative cash flow as suitable metrics in determining alternative strategies. Trade-offs between optimising for economic value and capital efficiency measures allow for decision-makers to evaluate potentially higher-risk, higher-capital and maximum NPV projects against lower-risk, lower-capital projects.CITATION:Stewart, C A and Butcher, R J, 2016. "Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. The Australian Mining Industry Council (A.M.I.C.) was established in 1967 as a body to co-ordinate the interests of the mining industry on a nation-wide basis. Its member- ship now embraces the great majority of mining groups in Australia. One of A.M.I.C.'s major continuing functions since its formation has been to work with Governments towards the enactment of more effective and efficient mining legislation. Yet, over the period, the,overall position, if anything has deteriorated. The main reason for this was that because of the rapid succession of what appeared to be quite separate problems during the period there was never sufficient time for Govern- ments to take stock of a situation before it would be changed by a new set of circumstances. By early 1973, the Council was certain that most of the various questions raised were really part of the one overall land use problem and its work in this area thus took a new emphasis from that time. In discussing the Council's involvement with Australian mining legislation over the last six years, the paper helps to clarify the present situation. Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The 335 000 oz Wilber Deposit is located within the Meekatharra-Wydgee Archaean greenstone belt in the Murchison District of Western Australia. The deposit comprises high-grade gold mineralisation hosted within a steeply west-dipping quartz lode, which lies within a broader (20–60?m) north-east striking shear zone envelope. Locally, the northerly-trending host rock geology includes greenschist facies high-Mg basalt (albite, actinolite, chlorite, biotite, calcite, zoisite, muscovite and titanate) intruded by at least two generations of felsic to intermediate porphyries (albite, actinolite, zoisite, chlorite, sericite, biotite, quartz and titanate). The Archaean rocks are cross-cut by a number of east–west striking Proterozoic dolerite dykes (biotite (50 per cent), albite, carbonate, epidote, titanate and actinolite) that are interpreted to have intruded pre-existing regional structures. The entire mine package is cross-cut by a system of shallow north-east-striking, north-west-dipping, barren quartz veins that commonly contain large (up to 30 cm), euhedral, smokey quartz megacrysts.The north-east-trending lode lies within a 3 m wide shear zone and varies from a single discrete 0.5 to 4 m wide laminated, massive or brecciated quartz-carbonate vein to multiple laminated veins up to 1 m wide within the shear. The veins exhibit strong boudinage, with cross-cutting quartz-carbonate seal veins in the boudin necks. The boudin necks often contain pink calcite. The shear zone fabric wraps closely around the boudin necks proximal to the vein, becoming more lode parallel distal to the vein. The lode is offset by a north to north-north-west trending fault.Mineralisation occurs as free gold within the quartz carbonate veins, with accessory sulfides including pyrite ± chalcopyrite, ± galena ± sphalerite. Fuchsite is observed in the veins, as laminar wall rock inclusions, with visible gold commonly associated with the wall rock laminations.Gold grades range from less than 1 g/t within the hosting shear zone, either at the margins or interstitial to the veins, to approximately 30 g/t in the single vein, and up to greater than 60 g/t in the multiple vein areas. This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.
