The determination of mineral composition is necessary in the mineral sands industry. Tiwest has developed a procedure for safe and convenient determination of the mineral composition using a magnetic separation followed by chemical analysis using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. This then requires the conversion of the elemental assays to mineral compositions. A project at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has developed a convenient analysis method for this conversion. This analysis is based on a reconciliation of the of the assays of the sample with the standard mineral assays by making minimal adjustments based on the assay accuracies to both sets of assays. As well as providing the mineral composition it to be tested for other applications and variations of the procedure to be evaluated. Given a range of samples, testing for the accuracy of the assays of the standard minerals, has been demonstrated.

For up to 75 years large scale coal mining has been carried out within the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria. Withdrawal of groundwater from Tertiary aged sediments within the Latrobe Valley is essential to allow coal mining to proceed to depth. Water within the overburden layers, coal seams and interseams must be drained to avoid flooding during the mining process. The pressure in deeper aquifers must also be lowered to avoid floor heave, batter instability, and to maintain safe operating conditions as the mines develop in size and depth. The cost-effective management of the groundwater systems at and adjacent to the mining operations in the Latrobe Valley is essential to enable the efficient utilisation of the coal resource whilst minimising the environmental impact of this major industry in rural Victoria. Large-scale depressurisation and dewatering programs within the Latrobe Valley mines are managed through the use of detailed groundwater management plans. These incorporate:an extensive monitoring network which extends up to 60 kilometres from the mines; detailed mine scale and regional groundwater and hydrogeological models; and established operational procedures aimed at minimising capital and operational costs associated with the mine groundwater systems. Groundwater extraction system optimisation programs have been introduced into two of the mines with the aim of reducing extraction rates, improved risk management, and reducing operational costs by approximately whilst not compromising mine safety. This paper reviews the aquifer depressurisation and mine dewatering operations of the Latrobe Valley mines and illustrates the techniques utilised to ensure that high artesian pressures do not adversely impact on the mining operations.

Many metallurgical beneficiation and primary concentrating processes rely upon discrimination of products from gangue based on particulate density of the different minerals and combinations of minerals in an ore. The basic definition of density is simple, but the apparent density that minerals exhibit when in the environment of commercial densimetric separation processes is more complex and is ill-defined. Measurement of the apparent density displayed by minerals in their separation situation is essential if modelling of plant performance is to be meaningful or when comparison of an existing operation with a æperfectÆ separation constitutes a part of an audit or of a plant control function. Seven methods of dividing ore samples into discreet density fractions are examined and criticised in this paper. The shortcomings, difficulties and potential errors arising from the use of each method are evaluated. Most of the techniques described have been used by the author and generally their faults are understood and the resultant first-hand experience has been used to overcome these faults. A simple new computer-assisted technique for developing meaningful densimetric data is described.

Access roads for haulage, construction or maintenance purposes are discussed with particular attention being given to the un- sealed "all weather" form of construction for Off-Highway applications. The service conditions experienced by the surfaces used in these roads is examined. These conditions are discussed in terms of the conventional engineering properties used for natural gravel material selection. Experience gained during the construction of a pipeline access track is used to illustratE material selection guidelines based on geological input and an understanding of good construction practices. Although the unsealed gravel road is the back-bone of the rural road network in Australia, in general, traffic loadings are relatively low compared to the off-highway unsealed haulage road. The cost of the haulage/access road construction component is one important factor in project planning which needs careful consideration. The activiltion of sphalerite with electrolytically generated copper ions from a copper electrode instead of the usual practice of the addition of copper sulphate was studied in the laboratory. A large surface area of copper was provided by lining three sides of a bench flotation cell with copper sheeting. The lining was connected to the positive terminal of a low voltage d.c. source, and the cell impeller to the negative terminal.Sphalerite was effectively activated by this arrangement and was subsequently floated using xanthate as the collector.Flotation results comparable to those obtained with 1 lb/ton CuS04.5H20 (0,255 lb/ton copper) were obtained using 0·1062 lb/ton of electrolytic copper and 0·488 kWh of electrical energy. The wastage of copper due to the formation of insoluble precipitates was found to be dependent on the length of time the current was passed. Maximum current was passed for the shortest time to minimize wastage.

A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. This opportunity to present a few thoughts on the question of professional education and training comes at a most appropriate time. In Britain, a great deal of energy is being expended in this, so-called, post-Finniston era, to create a new look for the status of engineers and engineering by the Engineering Council. Naturally, the tune and the tempo are being called by the big institutions which essentially serve the manufacturing industries. However, the Engineering Council in Great Britain also includes the mining and processing institutions such as the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) and so there is a chance - if it is taken - for us to contribute to the debate and the determinations that emanate from it. The IMM, of course, caters for the professional status of those engaged in the mining and minerals industries and includes many who do not see themselves as engineers. Nevertheless, the debate is important to these other groups whose livelihood is inextricably bound up with those who are engineers and there are many facets of the engineering policies being shaped that will, I am sure, eventually be enshrined in the requirements for professional status across all the various disciplines in our industry.

The Eossing Uranium Mine is a high tonnage low grade open pit operation using acid leaching for uranium extraction and ion exchange and solvent extraction for solution purification. Advanced technology, much of it computer based, has led to major economies that have contained operating unit costs over the last four years in the face of double figure inflation. An improved ore reserve block model and mine planning system have achieved a considerable reduction in the stripping ratio. Drilling and blasting costs have decreased some 25%, mainly by the introduction of heavy ANFO explosive. A centralised computer control centre for the metallurgical plant has increased labour productivity resulting in improved process control. The all-staff workforce is united with management in the objectives of creating a safe, healthy, working and living environment and a prosperous company, capable of contributing to the wellbeing of the nation and the shareholders. This situation has been brought into being by an equal opportunity policy coupled with a management system emphasising open two-way communication through all levels in the organisation. The success of this policy is highly apparent in the morale and productivity of the workforce.

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

A simple method of designing effective fill drainage systems for slurry backfill is presented. By using the proposed method, it is easy to calculate and predict the expected fill drainage rates or to provide additional drainage systems to accelerate the fill drainage. The fundamentals of hydraulic fill and an efficient method to determine its permeability is also explained. The safety in hydraulic filling and bulkhead stability depends totally on achieving effective drainage regime for the fill. This paper provides the basis for creating such efficient drainage regimes. The recent fatal fill bulkhead failures in Australia were the result of poor drainage from the respective fill masses, and therefore it is more important to provide suitable drainage arrangements to continue using hydraulic fill to the benefit of the mining industry. At present there is no procedure available to mine operators to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures to design a satisfactory bulkhead. Some mines are constructing bulkheads after their initial investigations carried out years ago. Other mines have simply borrowed the ideas from the pioneer mines and using in their areas. It is high time that we develop a rational approach to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures for the design of bulkheads. We need a simple model that could be understood and used by the mine operators on a day-to-day basis. This paper also presents a model to predict the bulkhead pressures for designing safe bulkheads.

Ausmelt has developed and commercialised high temperature reactor technology that has been applied to waste processing in the form of a catalytic waste converter (CWC). Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile converter containing an oxidised molten siliceous slag. Metals and other valuable products can be extracted from wastes for recycle into the community. Non-valuable components such as toxic organochlorinated compounds are destroyed and prevented from reforming. The slag produced is inert and can be safely used in building and concreting. The CWC can be applied to practically all types of wastes and examples from Ni-Cd batteries to toxic wastes are discussed. Additional benefits can be derived from large-scale operations if the surplus heat generated is exploited to produce steam and electricity.

Fine-grained coal tailings slurry undergoes only limited settling and self-weight consolidation, and tends to remain slurry-like and unsuitable for conventional laboratory consolidation testing. In addition, constant rate of loading consolidation testing is more representative of the continuous disposal of tailings slurry into a tailings storage facility (TSF) than conventional step loading. The laboratory consolidation testing of coal tailings slurry under a constant rate of loading has been carried out in a purpose-built, large-scale, slurry consolidometer, instrumented with load cells and pore water pressure (PWP) transducers. In the slurry consolidometer, the rate of loading may be varied to represent the actual rate of rise of the tailings in the TSF. A slow rate of loading increases the test duration, while too fast a rate of loading may build up very high excess PWP, without achieving significant consolidation. For the particular fine-grained coal tailings slurry tested, the rate of loading in the slurry consolidometer is varied to access its effect on the development and dissipation of excess PWP. The 500 orebody in the upper levels of Mt Isa Mines in north-west Queensland was mined by sublevel caving and block caving from 1962 to 1969. The hot and reactive rock mass of this orebody provided significant mining challenges including ground temperatures above those resulting from the geothermal gradient. Recently Xstrata Copper has been studying the potential to mine this orebody by modern caving techniques. Part of the study process has included re-accessing the ore zones for diamond drilling and trial development. A cross-cut trial drive, the first primary development into the orebody in more than 30 years, encountered a temperature increase in development holes from low sixties to almost 80¦C in less than 10 m advance. The issues associated with managing this risk include sourcing suitable quantities of reactive ground explosives for a single small heading and the temperature limitations of the explosives and detonators. Risk management outcomes included controls to mitigate the safety and reliability risks relating to misfires. The control that dealt directly with the challenge of continuing development in elevated temperature ground was to cool the holes before and during charging. The most effective and practical cooling medium proved to be water. Rapid rock temperature recharge time meant cooling had to continue as close to firing as possible. Reticulation systems were constructed to allow cooling to take place up until withdrawal for firing. No misfires occurred with the cooling system and additional controls in place. This proved that developing safely and effectively in the elevated ground temperatures of the 500 orebody is practicable.

The Australian gold industry has in recent years experienced a tremendous growth period, though not to levels prevailing at the turn of the century. There are, however, a number of dynamic factors at play which collectively indicate that it would be unwise to assume that this growth will be maintained; indeed the future discovery of viable new deposits may be insufficient to prevent an industry decline in Australia.The higher gold prices of the 1980's together with technological advances, made previously worked mining centres areas of excellent prospectivity. These resources, signposted for us by the oldtimers, are being rapidly depleted. Whilst there can be no doubt that these resources can be replaced the real question is whether it is economic to explore for new deposits when it is likely that:The cost of future exploration will increase as exploration must focus on grassroot areas with few signposts. Almost by definition this primary exploration effort will be subject to a lower success ratio.The cost of future exploration will increase as new deposits will be located in more remote areas and at depth.

is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

The colliery is owned by the BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd., the principal shareholders being the Broken Hill Pty. Company Ltd. and Hebburn Limited.It is situated due west of Newcastle and 6 south-east of Cessnock, N.S.W., and is conneeted by 36 miles of railway to the port of Neweastle. Of this mileage, 3 miles are owned by the Company, 3 by Hebburn Limited, 9 by the South Maitland Railways Ltd., and 21miles by the Government Railways.The seam worked is known as the Main Greta Seam of the Greta Coal Measures and is on the southern slope of the Lochinvar anticline.At the shaft, the seam is 1190 ft. below the surface, and the section of the coal measures is:-Upper or Main Seam, . 24 ft. 0 in.Conglomerate and shale 70 ft. 0 in.'Middle Seam 8 in.Conglomerate 25 ft. 0 in,Bottom Seam 1 ft. 2 in.These lie between two marine measures, and are the lower coal series of the permo-carboniferous period.Only the upper seam is workable in this area, the lower seams being too thin for eompetitive working. The section of the workable seam at the shafts is as shown on Fig. 1.Unfortunately, only the lower 12 ft. 5 in. of the seam is saleable.

This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

Competitive commercial circumstances internationally provide a prime impetus for miners to seek new technologies as a means to profitability and survival. Engineering and project management activities play a vital role in establishing, operating and developing the capital facilities used by miners. Computer based technologies are the single most important technology for maintain- ing competitiveness in engineering and project management into the future. Current applications of computers in engineering design and drafting are finding economic applications, computer-aids are more readily introduced, accepted and profitable. Computing technology is advancing very rapidly and on a broad front in hardware, software and communications. This technology advance is improving the ability of engineers and project managers to provide a high quality, responsive and low cost service which will improve in parallel with computer technology. As this technology advances, a key challenge is created for managers in selecting hardware and software, in developing people and organisations and in marketing the technology to advantage. While the future holds many exciting developments, people will still hold the key roles. While the nature of their roles may change, the final acceptance or rejection of technology will be by people, whether as users or owners, who will judge on the basis of whether their stake is improved or not.

The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.
