El Teniente Mine started the exploitation of the primary rock in the beginning of the 1980s decade, using caving methods. Since the beginning the mining activities have induced seismicity including some occasional rockbursts. Owing to the relevant damages, the mining operations were stopped in some production sectors. This paper describes the concepts that have been used in order to control the induced seismicity based on the strategies for controlling the rockmass breaking process, which depend on mining parameters. It also presents the main concepts applied in the Teniente Sub6 sector design and the experience collected during its sector exploitation.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). In this paper it is recommended that pyrite is to be separated as froth from arsenopyrite by selective depression of arsenopyrite in strong alkaline medium (1), by oxidation with chlorinated lime (II), by co-use of chlorinated lime with sodium carbonate (III), and by modification with `L' reagent (know-how) without filtering to get rid of residual copper ions after Cu activation (IV). The corresponding principles of these (new) effective methods were briefly discussed. The artificial mixture (1:1) of pyrite and arsenopyrite could be successfully separated, and concentrates of pyrite containing 2.12 per cent (I), 7.00 per cent (II), 2.60 per cent (III) and 3.16 per cent (IV) arsenic with recovery of 90.9 per cent (1), 89.5 per cent (II), 89.0 per cent (III) and 81.4 per cent (IV) respectively can be obtained by only one flotation. Some effective precautions were suggested to improve the separation of arsenopyrite and pyrite (or other sulphides) by flotation.

The history of world nickel production has been affected significantly by the supply and demand situation and fluctuation of LME price of nickel metal. In the beginning of the 1980s, the decline of price and demand lead to the withdrawal of un-competitive producers and the shrinkage of the production capacity. During the same period, Sumitomo Metal Mining maintained the production level with continuous improvement of the traditional matte electrorefining process. However, Sumitomo has recognised that the continuous improvement alone does not promise us the ability to catch up with rapid changes in the world. In the meantime, Sumitomo intensively researched chloride hydrometallurgy and has developed the chloride process for the nickel refining. This includes the solvent extraction and chloride electrowinning in the mixed sulphide process and the chlorine leach of the anode slime arising from matte electrorefining. In the late-1980s, Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to develop a new nickel refining technology based on chloride hydrometallurgy. The new process was designed from the comprehensive aspects involving safety and the environment. Construction of the plant for the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process was commenced in 1991. The MCLE plant with a capacity to 2000 tonnes per month has been commissioned at Niihama since 1992. The process has provided high productivity, overall good economics and high quality of electrolytic nickel produced. After the establishment of the process, Sumitomo has maintained continuous improvement of the new process and has attained the best practice of the work classification.

A quantitative knowledge of underground mine ventilation requirements and conditions has become increasingly important, both to meet statutory requirements and to ensure high levels of safety and productivity within mines. The ACIRL Mine Ventilation System MINVENT was designed to provide a flexible means of analysing the behaviour of an underground mine ventilation system under a variety of conditions. It is not sufficient to rely solely on the analytical tools such as ventilation network analysis computer programs - these must be supported by the expertise necessary to conduct an accurate underground ventilation survey as well as experience of typical conditions to be expected in the evaluation of proposed extensions to a new or existing mine. When planning a new mine, the ventilation engineer can use the program to draw on a set of typical ventilation parameters, seam and proposed mining methods. These have been assembled as a result of numerous ventilation surveys conducted by ACIRL in New South Wales and Queensland.

"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

The Martha deposit in Waihi, New Zealand, is a giant adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit that formed 6.0 to 6.1 Ma, and has produced over 6.4 Moz gold and 39.9 Moz. Fluid inclusion analyses were undertaken on a limited number of vein samples from Martha. The results from this eight week student project are preliminary but agree with previous studies. There is little variation between primary and secondary inclusions and between different vein types, except that homogenisation temperatures of the inclusions in sphalerite grains are on average 20¦ to 30¦C higher than the average quartz vein values. Overall the temperatures of homogenisation ranged from 182¦ to 258¦C and final ice melting temperatures ranged from 0.0¦ to 2.8¦C. Unusual black inclusions were also found associated only with the ginguro bands. Some of these appear to be solid sulphide inclusions but others are not so clear.

Carbothermic reduction of sulphide minerals for achieving a selective separation of metallic species from complex minerals has been discussed by considering the prevailing oxygen potential during the course of reaction. Construction of univariant plots for the reduction of sulphides with carbon monoxide gas or carbon and in the presence of either lime or anhydrous calcium sulphate is the key feature of this work. The theoretical calculations for univariants in the Cu-Fe-S-O system indicated a preferential separation of metallic copper and iron by imposing a chemical potential. This is evident from a logarithmic plot of sulphur dioxide partial pressure against reciprocal temperature. The results are compared with empirical data for the reduction equilibrium. The reduction behaviour of the constituent sulphides are also discussed together with the experimental results and theoretically predicted phase stability diagrams.

The increasing exhaustion of raw materials entails the exploitation of poorer orebodies where the target mineral occurs frequently in a very fine dissemination. Consequently it is necessary to grind more and more fine to achieve an adequate mineral liberation. In other words, it is of fundamental importance to know what size one should grind in order to avoid the following detrimental situations: 1. Excessive grinding - giving rise to the generation of ultra-fine slime particles which may be lost in the ulterior concentration process and simultaneously leading to higher energy consumption. 2. Incomplete grinding - giving rise to insufficient liberation and consequently leading to considerable losses of the valuable components in the tailings. Although this issue constitutes one of the most important steps in mineral processing, little research has been done compared to other processes, mainly due to the fastidious experimental work required. This paper describes a complete and integrated system of image analysis, where some algorithms to determine automatically the degree of li beration, for different levels of grinding, are proposed. These algorithms, mainly based on mathematical morphology theory were tested with images obtained from polished sections of different grain size fractions. Cases studies on a complex sulphide ore from an important copper and tin deposit located in the South of Portugal are discussed. Samples of the unbroken ore are also studied by image analysis to predict the degree of liberation obtained according to the fineness of grinding.

Copper (Cu) is a critical metal in the transition to a low-carbon power supply. Presently, low-grade copper sulfide ores account for almost 80 per cent of the global reserves. Large amounts of water are required to process these low-grade copper ores. The mining industry utilises lixiviants from recycled water from different sources to conserve water, whilst enhancing Cu recovery. Some utilise intermediate to pregnant leach solutions, sea water, and processed water from electrowinning circuits with highly variable concentrations of ions. Previous studies have highlighted the formation of precipitates that passivate the surfaces of minerals in these low-grade copper ores and/or block flow paths for lixiviant during heap leaching. In this study, we utilised concepts of phase replacement to devise an innovative means of controlling precipitation and increasing copper recovery using industrial brine as opposed to freshwater. We propose the formation of Al-rich phases (such as AlSO4 + or alunite) to replace iron sulfate and iron hydroxysulfates (such as jarosite) during the chalcopyrite dissolution-precipitation mechanism. The rationale is to have available Fe3+ throughout the chalcopyrite leaching process. We tested this method by carrying out various batch experiments using CaCl2, AlCl3, and NaCl industrial brine types compared to freshwater and explored the capacity to leach Cu from chalcopyrite. There is higher Cu recovery during oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in industrial brine with 91 per cent recovery using AlCl3-rich brine, 84 per cent with NaCl-rich brine, and 56 per cent with CaCl2-rich brine as compared to 35 per cent recovery using freshwater. In the absence of Al3+, various forms of iron sulfates, and jarosite are formed, reducing the availability of Fe3+ for chalcopyrite dissolution. The introduction of Al3+ leads to the formation of AlSO4 + species, thus lowering sulfate activity and the tendency for K-jarosite formation.

The Coal Section of the Geological Survey of Queensland was formed in 1950 to plan and supervise systematic diamond drilling programmes to investigate the State's coal resources. For the first 15 years these programmes were con- fined to the established coalfields to prove reserves of coal suitable for steam raising for power generation. Adequate reserves were del- ineated during this period to provide coal for the operating lives of new power stations at Ipswich and Collinsville. Later exploration was aimed at a regional appraisal of coal mea- sure stratigraphy, particularly in the Bowen and Galilee Basins. This was followed, in some areas, by drilling to prove reserves to indic- ated status. Parameters were developed to allow a uniform approach to the estimation of reserves. Coal quality is evaluated in terms of potential utilization of coal. Reserves defined by exploration companies are assessed, and combined with reserves from Departmental drilling into a general table. Total reserves in situ amount to 9 962 million tonnes of coking coal and 7 333 million tonnes of non-coking coal. Approximately 20 per cent of coking and 40 per cent of non-coking coal were proved as a direct result of Geological Survey drilling programmes. Further explor- ation is planned for the Bowen and Galilee Bas- ins and may extend to the Surat Basin.

BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

The surface waters in regions with acid sulfate soils (ASS) can contain high concentrations of acidity and dissolved metals. These soils cause problems for agriculture, construction and development. The water can be neutralised through many techniques, however a technique that is low in maintenance and low in cost is most desirable. Due to the vast spread of ASS along AustraliaÆs coastline an expensive and high maintenance solution would not be cost-effective. In this study, a passive treatment system that has been used to neutralise acid rock drainage has been applied to treat ASS water. This system is commonly referred to as an oxic limestone drain (OLD) or an anoxic limestone drain (ALD) depending on the waters dissolved oxygen concentration. The system that has been developed for ASS has a similar closed system to the OLD or ALD, that traps the carbon dioxide which forms when limestone reacts with acidic water. It has been called a closed tank reactor (CTR) and is constructed by placing limestone into an airtight tank. A common problem that will occur when acidic water with a high concentration of dissolved metals reacts with limestone is the formation of metal oxy-hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates can coat or armour the limestone and reduce its reactivity. To minimise the accumulation of precipitates in the CTR, perforated subdrains have been installed. It is anticipated that high water pressure and flow through the subdrains will remove some precipitates. A sump has also been installed at the base of the tank to collect precipitates that settle under gravity. The CTR has been tested for 70 days at a sugar cane farm located at McLeods Creek, NSW. Within this time the sump and subdrains have been used to flush the system. An orange solution was produced during flushing and it is believed to contain iron and aluminium precipitates. The initial performance of the CTR raised pH by at least one unit. Almost all dissolved aluminium was removed and more than half the dissolved iron. The total titratable acidity ranged from 17 - 92 mg/L CaCO3 in the initial month of monitoring. After passing through the CTR the acidity was reduced to zero. The performance of the CTR during the last few days of monitoring decreased. This is believed to be due to a pulse of water with higher acidity and dissolved metal content that lasted a week. In this pulse, the acidity reached 307 mg/L CaCO3 and the total dissolved aluminium reached a maximum of 24 mg/L. Higher concentrations of dissolved metals may have been the cause for lower performance due to increased precipitation and coating on the limestone.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. Ridgeway is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5.6 Mt of gold-copper ore per annum. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Drawpoint recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Grade control at Ridgeway has been based upon sampling the ore from SLC drawpoint bunds using 15 kg grab samples combined to form 30 kg samples prior to assay. This large sample size was selected in an attempt to representatively sample the coarsely-sized broken ore, the samples collected having a nominal diameter of about 130 mm. The assay results for gold and copper from these samples are extremely variable and the usefulness of the results has been questioned by the mine, particularly given the onerous and OH&S hazardous activity of handling large sample masses. Granulometry testwork at Ridgeway confirmed the extent of the relationship of decreasing sample grade variability with particle size. Based on this relationship, drawpoint sampling tests were carried out using 9 kg samples sieved to -45 mm at the drawpoint site. The gold and copper results from the finer 9 kg samples were significantly less variable than those from the normal, coarser 30 kg samples. The variance reduction was similar to that predicted from broken ore sample theory for the selected sample mass and nominal particle size. This relationship therefore allowed Ridgeway to assess the sample mass and particle size required to achieve a particular precision. In addition to improving the precision, the reliability of assay results from smaller samples from the fine particle fraction for drawpoint control depends on the accuracy of the results. The assumption is that the grade of the finer ore is similar to that expected from the lot, or that if a bias exists, then the extent of this bias is acceptable and consistent enough to be accounted for in the grade control system. The distribution of grade with particle size and the reconciliation of drawpoint sample and mine results is currently under investigation.

Refractory ores need to be pretreated prior to cyanide leaching for acceptable gold recovery. Pressure oxidation is one method of rendering the ores more suitable for cyanidation. The focus of this work is optimisation of autoclave configuration for pressure oxidation. An autoclave for the pressure oxidation of a feed containing pyrite and arsenopyrite was modelled, using the population balance framework. The autoclave model takes into account feed particle size, reaction kinetics and retention time. Mass balance calculations were incorporated into Cycad Process« software. This allowed for the investigation of different circuit configurations. The base case model consists of a single autoclave. The feed was then doubled and additional autoclaves were added to provide the same residence time as the base case. Four different configurations for the additional equipment were simulated. These were parallel, series, series with inter-stage thickening and parallel-series circuits. The options are compared in terms of extraction and productivity. The parallel circuit behaves similarly to the base case. The series and series-parallel circuits have higher recoveries and productivities than the base case. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening provides the highest extraction and productivity. This is because the thickening reduces the slurry volume and increases the residence time of the solids in the downstream autoclave.CITATION:Saloojee, F and Crundwell, F K, 2013. Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Brand se Baai, on the North-Western Cape Coastline of Southern Africa, is the site of the Namakwa Sands Limited Heavy Mineral Sands Mining Operation. The mine is a 14 000 000 tonnes per annum open-cast strip-style mining operation using truck and excavators to mine the sand. The orebody consists of relatively unconsolidated sands reworked by fluvial, marine and aeolian mechanisms. The total orebody includes three primary ore types, namely the Red Aeolian Sands, the Dorbank (a hardcap layer) and the Orange Feldspathic Sands, which forms the bulk of the resource. Mine planning and scheduling is done using a 50 m + 50 m variable bench height system with three primary bench heights. The Aeolian and Dorbank each have a bench that varies with their thickness of up to a maximum eight metres and the Orange feldspathic sand, a standard bench height of eight metres. For a number of years Namakwa Sands used a complex 2D, Datamine Based, macro system to perform the resource evaluation and mine design. As the mining operations expanded it became clear that a complete system redesign was required to cope with the increasing operational pressures coming to bear on the old system. The biggest challenges facing any replacement system are the sheer scale of the mining operation (16 km long and 7 km wide resulting in a minimum of 30 000 individual 50 m + 50 m mining blocks), the size of the geological data files (up to one gigabyte) and representing the benching system accurately (as the benches follow the topography and are not horizontal). In addition to these large-scale issues, the ability to run multiple mine design scenarios was required, an aspect which the old system was unable to perform adequately. Based upon these primary difficulties, a new business process was developed which required a complete rethink of the mine design methodology as well as the creation of a new system to deplete the resource model, produce monthly reconciliation evaluations and create a ultimate pit limit based on the operations mining cost model. Using a system based on the Earthworks Mine2-4D Mine Design and Scheduling System (with its mine design and scheduling specific tools), as well as a small, customised program, massive time-savings have been made. It is now possible to run several life of mine scenarios in the same timeframe that a single life of mine run took under the old system. This paper will present the methodology and business decisions behind the new Namakwa Sands system, and detail the restructuring and development used to deal with the large data set sizes and long processing times inherent in the old system. Future enhancements to the system that will make it more generically applicable to open-cast mining scenarios will also be dealt with.
