Trace fossils have been found in Bolivian Silurian sediments in "La Iumhre" area close to La Paz-Bolivia.Tracks, are good indicators of depth and environment. A detailed study of the ichnogenus is made.The depth and environmental deposits are analyzed to determine the facies. It was shown that the trace fossils of Silurian sediments in La Paz belong to the Zoophvcos and Nereites facies.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. A simple production technique has been initiated and implemented at Oaky Creek open cut coal mine to optimise recovery of coal from the relatively thin geological seams. The production technique is based upon minimising coal dilution through careful dragline operation and the selective use of mine mobile equipment to clean the top of coal. In addition, recovery of coal from the pits has been increased by refining blasting and dragline methods.The implementation of the recovery optimisation programme at Oaky Creek has provided significant economic benefits from increased yield through the preparation plant by the reduction in dilution, and from increased raw coal tonnage through improved pit recovery methods.

During the development of the Neves-Corvo Underground Copper Mine, since 1981, inflow of water has been encountered in the mine workings, which consist of a ramp from surface 5 km long, a shaft 575 m deep and access crosscuts through the massive sulphide orebodies of Neves, Corvo and Graga, which are three of the four known deposits up today. Mine-hydrological studies have established the main characteristics of the hydrological system and its evolution in space and time. In a geological setting of low permeability rocks of Paleozoic age, tectonically affected by thrusts and faults, this has involved consideration of the relation with surface and ground water as a result of mine dewatering processes. The hydrological systems are described and summarized in this paper together with the techniques employed to study their origin and evolution, namely hydrochemistry, thermometry, piezometry and isotopic tracers.

There has been significant growth in mining and energy exploration in South Australia, which has identified new major potential opportunities. This sector generates significant economic value to the state and their support remains a priority for the state government. The delivery of this economic and associated community value to the state is dependent on the mining and energy sector being able to access reliable water supplies.The vast majority of priority areas for the mining and energy sectors are located in areas that have traditionally been of low priority from a water-use perspective and hence, data and knowledge levels are generally low.Recent studies have identified a potential increase in demand for water in the mining and energy sector for potential developments from approximately 40 GL to over 170 GL over the next ten years. The studies found that water and water infrastructure is the second highest proportion of planned infrastructure capital investment by resource companies. The South Australian GovernmentÆs Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) initiative (PACE 2020), also identifies addressing the issues of location, use and management of South AustraliaÆs water resources as a key priority for the growth of the mining and energy sector.The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) has developed the facilitating long-term outback water solution (FLOWS) initiative. DEWNR is currently undertaking a suite of programs to provide groundwater information at the regional scale to better target water supply options for mining and energy developments and community water supplies.The Goyder Institute for Water Research has leveraged significant research investment of $3 M to develop methodologies to interpret airborne geophysics to map groundwater sources.The FLOWS Initiative will provide key content for the PACE Water Program and will also assist in the development of water supplies for remote far north communities by identifying alternate groundwater sources to improve water supply security.This paper will discuss how developing an appropriate science and knowledge base will encourage and secure development where appropriate, enable prudent decision-making and policies regarding water allocation, accounting and licensing, whilst ensuring the protection of environmental assets.CITATION:Power, N and Costar, A D, 2013. As part of a large AMIRA project, an on-line moisture meter was installed at two mine sites in Central Queensland. This project investigated the factors which control the moisture content of coarse (>0.5 mm) coal from the centrifuges used in conventional coal preparation plants. It was placed immediately after the first centrifuge to isolate the factors pertaining to one machine and its feed.The meter was found to be accurate and precise when compared with manual and mechanical sampling methods. The Grubbs estimator technique indicated that its precision is better than 0.3 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence limit.It has been identified that:1. the variability of the measured moisture contents of coarse coal can be described by normal distributions. Standard deviations of about 0.6 per cent are common; and2. the treatment of the coarse coal on the drain and rinse screens immediately prior to the centrifuge can affect the final moisture content.

An outburst is the spontaneous ejection of pulverized coal and gas from the working face in an underground mine. It is caused by overstressing the rock, due predominantly to the influence of geological structures on in situ stresses, stress concentration from the excavation and overburden load on mine openings, and large volumes of gas sorbed in the rock. The spontaneous release of high pressure gas creates intense shock waves which may cause damage to the mine ven- tilation system and the pulverized rock/coal ejected may cause injury or death to miners. The gases emitted pollute the mine air and may also result in death to miners.

Investigation of the differential flotation characteristics between arsenopyrite and pyrite in a ore concentrate have been carried out on a laboratory Leeds flotation cell. Experimental results indicate that some limited separation between arsenopyrite and pyrite is possible by differential flotation under the conditions of high pH and low pulp redox potential. The best performance in this testwork was achieved by using an oxidizing agent at pH 10.7. Of the oxidizing agents tested, NaOCI gave better oxidizing effect than KMnO4. It has also been observed that the pulp redox potential depends on the pulp pH value. At high pH values a hydroxide layer is formed on the arsenopyrite surface, which has the effect of a depressant on the arsenopyrite.

Flotation tests were conducted with galena, quartz and with synthetic mixtures of the two, in different ranges of grain size, and with different process parameter variants. Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. Reference will also be made to hydrodynamics, interfacial chemistry and the influence exerted by grain size in flotation.

The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

With oxygen conditioning routinely used in both the lead and zinc circuits at Pasminco Elura Mine a more sophisticated method of determining oxygen demand was required. It is known that different ore types have different oxygen consumption rates, however oxygen is added at a fixed rate regardless of ore type in the plant. Therefore, a simple laboratory test was devised to measure the oxygen demand of ores. The paper describes the technique employed, and provides an interpretation of the results. These data, together with pulp chemical measurements (Eh, pH and EDTA extraction data) were correlated against laboratory flotation performance to establish the relationship between oxygen demand and the position of the grade/recovery curve.

KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

The gabbroid-hosted nickel sulphide deposits of the East Kimberley constitutes one of Australia's most prospective emerging nickel provinces. Sally Malay Nickel NL (SMN), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gindalbie Gold NL, has established the East Kimberley Nickel Project (EKNP). The EKNP project tenements cover about 2000 sq km. The tenements cover the northern potion of a corridor containing mineralised or potentially mineralised layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions which includes the Ni-Cu-Co sulphide deposits at Sally Malay and Keller Creek. The Sally Malay deposit is located 225 km south-south-west of Kununurra (Figure 1). The sealed Great Northern Highway passes 3 km to the east of the deposit.
