Leaching studies were carried out on Indian Ocean manganese nodules using sulphuric acid as the lixiviant. By leaching the nodules with 8 per cent sulphuric acid for 12h at 100°C, copper and nickel could be completely extracted along with 50 per cent cobalt and 6.2 per cent manganese.94.2 per cent of the iron was also dissolved. To increase manganese and cobalt extraction, charcoal was used as a reductant. The role of charcoal was to reduce the manganese dioxide and render it soluble as manganese sulphate as well as to facilitate solution of the cobalt minerals associated with the manganese dioxide. Various leaching parameters were studied including acid concentration, amount of reductant, leach time, pulp density and leach temperature. It was found that by leaching the nodules with 10 per cent sulphuric acid at 100°C for 4h using 5 wt/wt per cent charcoal (0.05g of charcoal per g of nodule) almost complete extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese could be achieved. However, under these conditions all the iron present in the nodules was also leached.

In coal preparation, large dense medium cyclones (DMC) at low pressure heads (typically 9D where D = cyclone diameter) are the norm. This contrasts with high density mineral applications where, largely for historical reasons, smaller cyclones at high heads are the standard. There are advantages in preferring large diameter cyclones at low heads, assuming that metallurgical performance does not suffer significantly. These include simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, reduced medium pumping demands, smaller buildings and overall lower capital and operating costs. In 2008, therefore, Xstrata Zinc decided to trial a single DSM-design 800 mm cyclone in one of its four DMC lines at Mt Isa, replacing the four 400 mm cyclones previously installed. Circumstances allowed a low head of 9.5 D to be trialled, compared with the existing 400 mm head of 21.5 D. This paper describes the trial, including tests using painted ore particles as tracers, estimates of yield and metal recovery, and wear monitoring. The larger unit performed well. There was no evidence that metallurgical performance in terms of metal recovery and waste reject rate suffered, and there was some evidence that it may have improved. Cyclone life increased, and preliminary data suggest that the replacement cost of the 800 mm cyclones is less than half that of the 400 mm units, and this is expected to improve. The plant layout and operability have also improved significantly. Xstrata has therefore decided to convert the whole plant to four low head 800 mm units, replacing the original 16 high head 400 mm units. The paper includes an explanation of the effect of static head on DMC separating force. It also reviews earlier research on diamond applications, and applies a general DMC process model to the Xstrata case, both of which confirm that large, low head cyclones are appropriate in mineral applications, contrary to conventional practice. Such units could significantly reduce both the capital and operating costs of DMC plants in mineral applications.

Whether it be steel for our bridges, cement and aggregate for our concrete, coal for our power stations, copper for our wire, phosphate for our fertiliser or gold for our jewellery it first must he found, then mined and processed before we can use it. There is no other way.

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.

Pneumatic flotation, as developed by Dr Rainer Imhof, has been applied in commercial beneficiation operations since 1987. Over 85 flotation cells have been installed in more than 30 operations, successfully beneficiating a wide range of minerals. Pneumatic flotation is however still considered as a non-conventional flotation process. Due to its highly selective nature in operation it has generally found its market in difficult applications where conventional flotation equipment has struggled. Compa±fa Minera Huasco (CMH) operates an iron ore pellet plant in central Chile. CMH desired to produce a low silica pellet for the export market where the SiO2 grade should not exceed 1.5 per cent. It is common practice in other countries to float quartz from hematite with relative ease. However, the silicates contained in the magnetite ore of CMH are only present as quartz in small quantities and the major undesirable silicates are difficult to float. CMH spent considerable time on developing a reverse flotation process and a reagent suite to try and reduce the silica content to acceptable levels. However, extensive laboratory and pilot plant tests with conventional mechanical tank type cells and with column cells failed to produce the required reduction in impurities. A series of tests with pneumatic flotation cells indicated that this type of flotation technology could achieve the required silica target. A 500 tph Imhoflot pneumatic flotation plant was subsequently constructed and successfully commissioned by CMH, making it one of the largest iron ore flotation plants in the world. This paper details the background and testing that was undertaken by CMH which led them to choose pneumatic flotation as the preferred process and compares the test results with that achieved in the industrial plant.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems an particularly prone to developing the complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permcahilit} that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits.

A contract for three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans of the same aerodynamic design, was placed by Mount ]sa Mines Limited in 1963. The hydraulic blade pitch changing mechanism, the method of blade fabrication, and the roll out centre casings are features of these fans. Protection devices and fan control are designed for unattended operation and remote control. The erection and commissioning of the fans during 1964-65 is described.

Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. A combination of flotation and smelting technologies is proposed as a cost-effective means to maximise the revenue of base metal operations. The proposed treatment route breaks the grade - recovery nexus associated with the treatment of ores exhibiting difficult mineralogy in conventional plants. Aspects of the two technologies are reviewed and typical capital and operating costs presented. A significant improvement in revenue is demonstrated in a worked example, where a copper-lead-zinc operation is examined in terms of the conventional and proposed treatment options. For the selected ore, the net smelter return per tonne of mill feed improved 57 per cent, from US$89.70 to US$141.10 with the proposed treatment option. This represents an additional US$51.4 million in annual revenue. Metallurgical operating costs increased by US$20.12 per tonne of mill feed for an incremental capital requirement of US$30.3 million for an existing operation.

For more than 30 years shearer loaders have been the most important winning machines for,longwall mining. While the machines of the first generation had a driving power of only 100 or so kW, the present day shearer loaders may be powered by more than 1000 kW. Daily outputs of 24000 tonnes have now been reached, but this still does not set a limit. If the deposit conditions allow, further increases are possible. This requires the optimum coordination of all system components. For this paper the use of coal plows has been of little import as plows have found no favour, and nor are they likely to do so in today's economics in Australian coal mining.

Benchmarks of mine equipment involved in the excavation process of coal mines would suggest that such equipment is not always operating at an optimum level. Dragline operations and truck/shovel operations rely on efficient use of their plant in order to maintain high mine throughput. The first process which affects the material to be excavated is the drilling and blasting process. Drilling and blasting delivers a fragmented material with a given disposition ready for excavation by mine equipment. As mine operators demand more productivity from their major excavating equipment, many sites are considering the use of productivity monitors to measure their outputs. Some of these productivity improvements will be directly related to the drilling and blasting process, so that as the monitoring systems improve, the opportunities to evaluate all drilling and blasting variables will also improve. This paper reviews current and newer methods for monitoring equipment productivity in mines. These include simple time and motion studies obtained by either manual timing of processes or by automated data collection equipment being adopted by the industry. Case studies for truck/shovel operations are discussed and the productivity improvements are compared with typical industry standards. These improvements relate specifically to parts of the load, haul and dump cycle and the potential for significant improvements are identified. Particular opportunities for drilling and blasting improvements are also presented.

Barometric pressure and its variation in deep underground workings have a considerable effect on ventilation conditions. Pressure changes which create transient states of air flow and air parameters in workings are especially significant. Experiments have shown that pressure changes have a remarkable effect on air parameters at mine workings and hence, attempts to evaluate the scale of this phenomenon are of value. Continuous monitoring of the barometric pressure on the surface of mines allows for the detection of changes in pressure which undoubtedly influence alternations of pressure in the underground areas of mines. Very important factors are the internal disturbances of pressure within a mine ventilation system due to variable conditions of fan operation and the operation of a winding machine where a mine cage moving in a shaft causes piston like disturbances. Local transient disturbances caused by temporary opening/closing of air stoppings due to personnel or underground transport traffic are of importance. The results of over two years of observations of barometric pressure and its influence on pressure variation in underground mine workings are presented in this paper. The observations were possible through the installation of pressure sensors at selected points of the downcast shaft in a mine. Of interest are the observations of the transient states of pressure and other air parameters caused by emergency fan stoppage, movement of a mine cage and changes due to the opening of air stoppings. Data acquired during experiments of opening and closing air stoppings were used for the validation of a flow model in a long working.

There is no other effective way for study ing firedamp and coaldust explosions than to produce controlled explosions in a pre-monitor- ed environment - either mine openings kept for the purpose, or special surface galleries. Such explosion testing facilities have been employed historically at Buxton in U.K., with lesser known installations at Bruceton, U.S.A., Tremonia, West Germany, Katowice-Mikolow, Poland and elsewhere. Both firedamp and coal dust explosions are studied. Normally coal dust explosions are initiated by somewhat standardised methane air mixtures, by explosives, or purely by coal dust. Various structures and suppression installations are installed in roadways and galleries prior to explosion to simulate destruction and suppression, and the results of such tests form the basis of suppression installations, especially stone dust barriers and water barriers. Other data collected from these experiments include rev- ersals of explosion waves, pressures and temperatures and duration of explosion waves, analyses of aftergases etc. Other uses of explosion testing galleries include testing of explosives, electrical equipment and frictional . sparking.

Magnetic separation using particle rotation in a continuously rotating magnetic field offers very low to insignificant non-magnetic particle entrapment, and precise magnetic fractions. The precision of rotating magnetic field separations makes the method ideal for dry laboratory magnetic analysis work, where conventional laboratory magnetic separators can give misleading or uncertain data. The very low entrapment characteristics make the method ideal for entrapment-critical separations within the diamond exploration industry or in gold recovery. A single wet rotating magnetic field (RMF) unit is able to achieve a cleaner separation (at similar or better recovery rates) than a three-stage separation using conventional wet drum separators. The RMF separator is able to work effectively at particle sizes below 50 ¦m, and RMF separation could, at least in theory, be used down to single domain particle sizes. Rotating magnetic field (RMF) separation is carried out by magnetically spinning the particles at frequencies up to 300 Hz. The particle rotation itself may be used to roll the particles out of the separator. At angular velocities of 100 Hz, magnetic flocs are unable to form, and any entrapped particles are energetically expelled. In an RMF separator, the outer drum can be stationary while the inner magnet rotor rotates, allowing, for example, the injection of cleaning water underneath the separating magnetics to help remove small suspended non-magnetic particles.

On 8 July 1993, a landslide of about one million cubic metres of rock blocked the river Satluj near Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojana - Bhaba project and caused flooding into the Bhaba Power House (120 MW) resulting in suspension of power generation. The concerned authorities desired an early removal of the blockade by an underwater blasting operation into the over topping water to reduce the water level at the blockade and resume power generation in the power house. In the absence of underwater drilling, it was essential for the blasting technique to be used where no cavity to confine the explosive was required. For this reason mud capping and plaster shooting with directional throw were used and additional specially fabricated mild steel pipe charges were used under high current for an underwater trenching operation. By employing these techniques the river blockade was removed up to the required depth and on 8 September 1993 the Power House resumed the power generation.
