The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary deposits, which include tailings streams and tailings dams, are higher than most countries’ primary deposits. In addition, these secondary deposits have already been mined and processed, meaning that the recovery of high-grade product requires low capital and operating costs.The most widely used process for the recovery of these valuable fine and ultra-fine hematite iron particles is the wet high-intensity magnetic separation technique, originally developed by Dr Jones over 55 years ago. Many of the original machines are still working today.The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities in terms of grade and yield of using sophisticated magnetic separation modules. All results and figures are obtained from test work and design and engineering work with material from the Pilbara. In addition, consideration is given to dewatering of iron ore product and tailings.Two types of tailings have been identified for processing. Firstly, tailings that have already been deposited in a tailings storage facility, and secondly, live tailings streams from an existing wet iron ore beneficiation plant. In both cases, the technical and practical results are shown along with relevant flow sheets and plant layouts. Finally, this paper highlights the total predicted power and water consumption, capital requirements and projected operating expenses.The results show that the operating costs are significantly lower than the mining and processing operations that are required for an equivalent amount of iron ore. The recovery of iron depends on various factors but is within the 30–50 per cent range at an equivalent grade to the mainstream product. Another significant benefit is that the magnetic separation process is water positive, meaning that water is released rather than added in the process.The processing of the Pilbara’s secondary deposits will therefore result in an overall reduction in operating costs, an increase in product yield from a plant, extend the life-of-mine and offer environmental benefits by reducing the tailings footprint and water usage.The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary iron ore deposits and tailings are such that many other countries would judge these as equivalent to primary deposits. "The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The West Australian Government hold an annual ‘Mines Safety Roadshow’ around the State’s regions and the capital city, Perth. Each year presenters provide an update on legislation and safetyrelated themes. A recurring theme is the mining industry fatality rate. Professor Michael Quinlan’s ‘Ten Pathways to Death and Disaster’ (Quinlan, 2014) has been referenced regularly to assist in structuring workshops and conversations concerning fatality prevention in the mining industry. The ‘Ten Pathways’ are the outcome of an analysis of fatal injuries in the mining industry, which identified a series of common themes to the fatalities: Pathway 1: Design, engineering, technical and maintenance flaws. Pathway 2: Prior warnings or causes for alarm ignored. Pathway 3: Failures in risk assessment. Pathway 4: Failures in management systems and hazard management plans. Pathway 5: Failures in auditing. Pathway 6: Economic pressures compromising safety. Pathway 7: Failures in regulatory oversight and inspection. Pathway 8: Worker and others expressing concern prior to the incident. Pathway 9: Poor management – worker communication and trust. Pathway 10: Emergency and rescue resources and procedures. To determine a fatality risk profile we asked participants at the Mines Safety Roadshows to indicate their perception of their employer’s performance in each of the Ten Pathways. We administered the questionnaire at the Mines Safety Roadshows in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023. In this paper, we report on the results of the questionnaires, and suggest how organisations can improve their fatality risk score.

A numerical modelling back-analysis exercise was carried out at a WA gold mine at which early signs of seismicity (rock noise, scatts from active faces) were becoming apparent as depth of mining increased towards the 500 m mark. Some strain bursting had occurred and it was necessary to discover what the implications of this were for greater depth. The aim of the modelling was to: 1. Establish a correlation between observed ground conditions and model predicted damage, in overstressed areas of the mine. 2. Use this correlation to forecast rock mass damage and ground control requirements for proposed future stoping panels at greater depth. Good correlation has been achieved between observed rock mass damage, and a 3D Finite-Element RS3 model, run in elastic mode. Two candidate stress field orientations were modelled. The model parameter best fitting the observations was the Strength Factor (SF), the ratio of strength/stress. The good match (correlation coefficient of 0.7) between observed and modelled suggests that the elastic approach is justified for the depth range and rock mass properties analysed. The correlation also enabled a link between observed damage and installed ground support performance. Using the linear best-fit between observed and modelled, a forecasting exercise was carried out using the same RS3 model, modified to include future stoping. The resulting damage and ground support categories were obtained from the modelled SF for each proposed stoping level. Also, a series of generic geometries was assessed to investigate the impact of varying stope face lead/lag distance, sill pillar height and stope pillar size, on ground conditions. The key finding of the generic geometries were: • Ground support schemes have been defined for the expected conditions. • All ore drives are expected to have significant damage in the backs and rehabilitation. • Lead/lag distance not to exceed 10 m. • Sill pillar/level intervals of less than 20 m require an increase in ground support scheme. • Pillar sizes for maintaining footwall and hanging wall stability should be at least 10 m × 5 m.

Indonesia holds a significant role in the utilisation of coal resources in the world. Although the number of Indonesian coal resources and reserves do not fall into the world’s top ten, according to 2009 statistics, Indonesia is the seventh largest producer of coal with a production of 256 Mt. More than 80 per cent of this amount is sold in the export market, making Indonesia the world’s second largest coal exporter. Most of the exported coal from Indonesia is used to fulfil the needs of the Pacific market, such as Japan, Taiwan, China, among others. It is also possible to reach the Atlantic market.Along with Indonesia’s development program, until 2025 the Indonesian government has adopted a National Energy Policy that aims to reduce the role of petroleum in electricity generation and replacing it with coal. As a follow-up of the policy, since 2009 PT PLN, the state electricity company has built steam power plants throughout Indonesia as an implementation of the first stage of the Electrical Acceleration Project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. Moving forward, in 2011 PT PLN will also build the second stage of the project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. As a result of the program, the domestic need for coal is expected to increase as much as 44.8 Mt.With the increase in domestic need and decrease in the number of reserves, the Indonesian government has adopted policies to secure the domestic coal supply. A policy that may potentially be adopted by the government is the limiting of coal production, seeing the high rate of increase in Indonesian coal production. The adoption of such a policy will change the distribution map of coal in the Pacific market. Thus, this paper will evaluate the change of coal distribution patterns in the Pacific market along with the increase in Indonesian domestic needs and Indonesian adoption of policies regarding the securing of coal supplies.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

This paper presents the results of a field study designed to assess the impact of vane rotation speed on the estimated undrained strength for two Australian bauxite tailings storage facilities. The vane test results are assessed against cone penetration and dissipation tests results to identify if partial drainage may be an issue. An innovative tool capable of measuring pore pressures during vane shear testing, the Piezovane™, is introduced as an improvement over the standard field vane to assess drainage conditions in real-time.

The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. The main reason for the underutilisation of steelmaking slags is their instability, which is influenced by their complex phase structure. Recycling and sustainable steelmaking slag face challenges due to the presence of magnesium oxide (MgO), a crucial component in steelmaking slag. This study investigates the phase evolution of steelmaking slag during the cooling process with different MgO contents, using high-temperature experiments and FactSage™ software, ver 8.1, (by Thermfact/CRCT and GTT-Technologies) thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope - energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses identified main phases in steelmaking slag, including Ca2SiO4 (C2S), RO (MgO-FeO solid solution), Ca2Fe2O5 (C2F), and Ca3SiO5 (C3S). The study reveals that RO phase increases as the MgO content increases. C3S precipitates from steelmaking slag with a 12 mass per cent MgO content at a reduced temperature of 1400°C. It is important to note that C3S remains in the steelmaking slag even after slow cooling. This may be due to the substitution of Ca2+ in C3S by Fe2+ and Mg2+ ions. Intriguingly, the precipitation of f-CaO in steelmaking slag with 10 mass per cent of MgO content occurred after one year, while there was no manifestation of f-CaO precipitation in the steelmaking slag with 12 mass per cent of MgO content even after one year. This discrepancy suggests a potential stabilising effect of an appropriate amount of MgO in steelmaking slag. However, it is crucial to emphasise that this inference lacks supporting data, necessitating further research to validate this hypothesis. The significance of this work is in uncovering the complexities of steelmaking slag behaviour, providing essential insights for optimising recycling processes. The research sheds light on the factors that influence the phase composition and stability of steelmaking slag, contributing to the utilisation of steelmaking slags, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing the overall efficiency of metallurgical processes in the current industrial landscape.

Australia had an active uranium mining industry in the 1950s with uranium oxide being supplied under contract to the atomic energy authorities of the U.K. and U.S.A. In the 1960s, when these con- tracts concluded, domestic production ceased, apart from Rum Jungle, whose production until 1971 was stockpiled. By the 1970s, the demand for uranium from the electrical utility industry had risen sharply and the effects on Australia were notable. The Mary Kath- leen mine re-opened in 1976 but, more significantly, exploration activity suddenly expanded with the re- sult that several world-standard deposits were locat- ed. Western world requirements for uranium based on increasing energy consumption and a changing energy mix, will warrant the development of Aust- ralia's resources. By 1985 our mines could be pro- ducing 9,500 tonnes of uranium oxide yearly and by 1995 the export value from uranium could reach that from wool. In terms of benefit to the community the economic rewards are considerable but, in terms of providing energy to the world, Australia's uranium is vital.

Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent. There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. Stream diversions are a common feature of mine sites worldwide. From an operational perspective, a fundamental requirement of a stream diversion is that it should convey water flows between two points in a safe, controlled and predictable manner. On the other hand, rivers and waterways are naturally dynamic systems, and many of their natural values are achieved through their ability to alter their forms and processes over time in response to flow events - often in a potentially unsafe, uncontrolled and unpredictable manner. In order to ensure that diverted river reaches achieve the dual objectives of short-term operational stability and longer term physical equilibrium with surrounding landscapes, alteration of form and process must somehow be understood and incorporated into the design process. However, performance targets for waterways are not always easy to define and assessing what is good and bad in such variable systems can be difficult. This paper proposes a new multiresource multistage scheduling problem for optimising the open pit drilling, blasting and excavating operations under equipment capacity constraints. The flow process is analysed based on the real-life data from an Australian iron ore mine site. The objective of the model is to maximise the throughput and minimise the total idle times of equipment at each stage. The following comprehensive mining attributes and constraints have been considered: types of equipment; operating capacities of equipment; ready times of equipment; speeds of equipment; block-sequence-dependent movement times of equipment; equipment-assignment-dependent operation times of blocks; distances between each pair of blocks; due windows of blocks; material properties of blocks; swell factors of blocks; and slope requirements of blocks. It is formulated by mixed integer programming and solved by ILOG-CPLEX optimiser. The proposed model is validated with extensive computational experiments to improve mine production efficiency at the operational level. The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.
