The total drill and blast concept is widely known in the mining industry. On the contrary, the quarry industry rarely adopts such working methods. Based on the experience of the CBS quarry in the North of France, this paper shows how up-to-date blasting technology and simple control methods can significantly improve the overall Mine to Mill efficiency of a quarry. The CBS quarry, in partnership with the EPC group and Nitro- Bickford Company, adopted a new working process three years ago aimed at increasing blast performance and related productivity of the downstream process (loading, hauling and crushing). The pattern geometry of each blast is controlled and explosive charging is carried out following the æconstant specific energyÆ CSE concept. This method provides a homogeneous fragmentation distribution and reduces vibration peak-particle-velocities. The impact on downstream productivity is controlled by means of a simple information management system, which collects and measures key parameters of the production process such as; hauling cycles, crusher throughput, secondary breaking and vibration peak particle velocity. This information system has clearly proved over time that consistent blast quality could be achieved, leading to a 30 per cent improvement in quarry productivity. Improved energy control of blasting through optimisation with electronic detonators, allowed a significant reduction in vibration impact on the environment. Improvement in blasting security, reduction in the environmental impact and productivity enhancement are major benefits that quarries can obtain from these CSE optimisation blasting methods.

A description is given of a detailed examination of a coal bore core and of attempts to predict properties of equivalent "as-mined" coal using the bore core data so obtained. The accuracy of the prediction was measured by testing independently a large sample of coal which was produced under near mining conditions from a site adjacent to the bore core. Very encouraging results were obtained particularly in the prediction of size and ash distributions and washability characteristics of run-of-mine Coal.

To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

The hydrometallurgical separation and enrichment processes provide an effective way to selectively recover metals from relatively dilute multicomponent sulfuric acid leach solutions. The multicomponent leach solution utilised in this study contained 0.3 g/L Cu, 0.34 g/L Ni, 0.13 g/L Co, and 2.96 g/L Fe, which was obtained after high-pressure oxidative acid leaching (HPOAL) of the copper-nickel smelter slag. The solvent extraction (SX), precipitation, and xanthate complexation processes were employed to recover and upgrade Cu, Ni, and Co from the leach solution. Batch SX tests were carried out using a countercurrent two-stage mixer settler extraction column, and LIX 984N (10 per cent v/v) as a copper extractant. Fundamental parameters influencing the extraction process such as pH, mixing speed, H2SO4 concentration, and organic/aqueous (O/A) phase ratio were investigated. For copper enrichment in solution, a combination of two extraction stages and two stripping stages were employed. Copper was successively separated from Fe, Ni, and Co under optimised extraction conditions (pH 2, 400 rev/min, O/A 0.25, and 20 min contacting) and stripping conditions (175 g/L H2SO4, 400 rev/min, O/A 4, and 20 min contacting). About 97 per cent of copper was extracted with low co-extraction of Fe, Ni, and Co of about 5.90 per cent, 1.47 per cent, and 2.53 per cent, correspondingly. A final Cu-rich solution containing 23 g/L Cu was obtained with a very low Fe concentration of 0.05 g/L. Additionally, for iron removal from the Ni/Co raffinate solution, more than 99 per cent of iron was precipitated at pH 4 by the addition of a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) suspension, with low co-precipitation of nickel and cobalt of around 3.68 per cent and 2.27 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, about 83.6 per cent of nickel and 99.4 per cent cobalt were co-precipitated from the solution by potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) solution at pH 6. The Ni and Co xanthate complexes were thermally decomposed and recovered as cobalt oxide (CoO) and nickel sulfide (NiS) solids.

German hard coal mining operations have decreased for more than 40 years. Current political decisions are leading to a discontinuation of subsidised black coal mining by the year 2018. This decision will, however, be reviewed once again in the year 2012. The enormous increases in productivity, which were achieved in previous years, have so far not led to an achievement of market requirements. Coal mining at depth of more than 1200 m in multiple seam environments is not yet competitive in global comparison. In 2008 the 24 faces left in eight mines produced about 20 million tonnes of usable steam coal. Management and the workforce will be reduced in parallel; from today until 2012 by more than half. The average age of personnel is increasing dramatically and nearly no new personnel are recruited. With this background in mind, increasing continuously coal mining productivity becomes more and more difficult. Above all, this goal was reached by mechanisation, then by increasing the mining machine power and then by enhanced machine control systems. The first attempts to automatically operate full face equipment from above ground were in the early 1980s. After successful automation of the face equipment, the emphasis is now on mine logistics. Autonomous monorail transport was introduced and tested in 2007. Since the development rate of machine improvements has its limits, the focus is on the full interaction of the total production system. Here information technology (IT) becomes important; the driver for more productivity. Actual developments aim for the complete and general homogeneous IT infrastructure both above ground as well as underground. The explosive environment needs high level investments in safe technology, eg access points for WLAN and fibre optics for underground use (ATEX certification). New technology availability also drives the enhancements of management and process control systems. Innovations in the mining industry often comprise technology advances through the adoption of well-known technologies. With virtual reality (VR) teaching and training systems advanced computational instruments, both in software and hardware development, were applied in the German coal mining industry for ten years. Widening lists of applications as well as the encouraging achievements show the economical benefits of investing in virtual reality technology both for teaching and training and for knowledge management. The paper discusses the actual technical achievements as well as in IT infrastructure utilisation and also in employment of virtual reality based systems. Special focus and deeper insight will be given to the fibre optics and WLAN hardware integration as well as software developments. The pocket personal computer (PC) is used to enhance underground material transport and data acquisition. The knowledge-based maintenance system (KBMS) integrates real-time virtual reality knowledge elements, such as repair process descriptions. It gives access to expert documentation by intelligent search algorithms and 3D representations of major mining machinery.

Downhole survey uncertainties observed at various De Beers operations prompted an investigation into their possible effect on deposit shape and volume. An accurately surveyed artificial æboreholeÆ was constructed and different downhole survey instruments tested. In this way an empirically determined error range of 0.1 per cent to ten per cent was derived for downhole survey data. These survey errors were applied to an orebody model at an existing mine. Visualising the sphere of uncertainty associated with a borehole trace using a general mining package (GMP) gives an indication of possible volume variance. The resulting orebody maximum and minimum volume scenarios for three different depths (200 m, 500 m and 800 m) are presented. For certain instruments and borehole angles, the 3D positional error can be as high as 100 m at 1000 m down the hole. At depths below 200 m the resulting volume deviations can become significant for borehole survey errors exceeding 0.35 per cent. At 800 m depth the volume difference can approach 25 per cent. These figures assume that the error is compounded. The impact of these downhole survey errors is greatest for pipe-like orebodies such as porphyries and kimberlite pipes. Subhorizontal sill-like orebodies (and coal seams) will not be significantly affected by these errors. The impact of this type of survey error needs to be stated (and quantified) and is significant in JORC classification.

In recent years, the. art of electric steelmaking has received a great deal of attention, and naturally, much controversy has existed from time to time regarding the relative merits of different practices and tywes of furnaces. Nevertheless, at the present time, the basic principles of the process are reasonably well established, and by far the greatest percentage of electric steel is a product of the basic lined, direct arc type furnace. Ferro alloy manufacture has demanded the development of furnaces having very different characteristics to those used for steel. Some special alloys, however, require conditions of manufacture which are more closely approached in the steel type furnace, and thus the latter has been adapted where necessary for the production of these alloys.One such alloy, low carbon ferro-manganese, is manufactured at Whyalla, South Australia, in a basic-lined, direct arc furnace, which is used alternatively for the production of alloy steels.BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ELECTRIC FURNACEThe principle of melting by electricity was first applied to the melting of iron in 1879 by William von Siemens, whose equipment consisted of a small crucible into which were introduced two carbon electrodes. The irregular shape of the Rosebery orebody, coupled with the inconsistencies in grade over short strike lengths, has meant stoping blocks have had to be small to combat dilution and stability problems. In the past, each lens was divided into regular block sizes and developed up to five years before production commenced. There were two major drawbacks to this practice; firstly, existing development deteriorated over time therefore requiring rehabilitation prior to production. Secondly, the pre-determined blocks could not be easily changed to incorporate changes in mining technology or economic circumstances. Bearing these problems in mind, it was evident that any new lens development had to be designed to allow maximum flexibility. The lens being currently developed is J lens. It represents approximately 50 per cent of the current reserves tonnes, and 65 per cent of the zinc metal. Its importance to the mine's future cannot be over emphasised. At its core the lens is up to 25 m thick at grades of over 30 per cent zinc. The practice of dividing the orebody into levels and sublevels, with consequent crowns was no longer acceptable because of restrictions in stope design and potential loss of ore. To assist in the development planning of J lens, a geostatistical block model was applied in long section to graphically represent the lens. Areas of high zinc concentration, as well as zones of uneconomic material were identified by using the model. This has meant that the development could he targeted, enabling stope delineation to occur in the lens without significant ore loss. Because of limited development resources, and the need to bring J lens on-line in the near future, the development strategy has had to focus on 'just-in-time' principles, rather than accessing the whole lens from bottom, and progressing upwards. Tight development schedules have required individual stoping block to be developed on such factors as grade and available tonnes rather than as a vertical sequence.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Notnnea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanims of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend from early inafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calc- alkaline. There is no evidence of 'mixing, of, the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to sprcadime in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier Mesozoic subduction zone.

The El Teniente mine produces more than 340 000 tonnes of fine copper per year from an industrial complex of underground mine, concentrator and smelter. Mass caving methods are employed to deliver approximately 95 000 tpd of ore to the mill, from a number of sectors underground, each sector being in effect a large-scale mine in its own right. This mining activity has faced challenges over the course of the last century such as:the capacity of the underground mine has been expanded to maintain and increase output of fine copper; the increasing size of the ore fragmentation forced to change the mining method to achieve the high productivity and profitability required in the business; and to modify the mining methods to continue mining at depth with safety. Fundamental activities in these mining methods, for the successful initiation of caving and subsequent draw, are:undercutting the base of the block or panel by blasting; and excavating of drawbells. The undercutting design evolves mainly on the height of the blasting to manage the change on ore fragmentation. The methodology move away from incorporating massive areas, typical of the block caving method, to a continuos blasting, typical of the panel caving method. Drawbell design changes on geometry, dimensions and sequence of excavation to deal with a corse ore fragmentation and the resolution of mining difficulties in the form of major rock bursts and collapses of production facilities. This paper focuses upon the evolution of the undercutting and drawbell design used at El Teniente mine and techniques under consideration to deal with future caving operations to provide the bulk of the daily production for the foreseeable future.

A soil cover isolates potentially acid-forming (PAF) mine wastes from atmospheric interaction and thereby mitigates acid mine drainage. As a cover that comprises either a single layer or a composite barrier, it essentially manages percolating rain water from flowing into these PAF materials and minimises air flow as oxygen has low diffusivity in saturated soils. However, the availability of suitable soils as cover materials is limited, especially in arid and semi-arid regions where weathering rates are low.This paper investigates the potential use of mine wastes as cover materials in a water-shedding soil cover in north-west Queensland. Four cover trial plots were built using mine wastes as cover materials. Each 2.3 m cover trial plot consisted of a 1.5 m soil cover made up of waste rocks and fines, a 0.5 m drainage layer that consisted of 0.1 m waste rock aggregates and a base layer made up of blended mine tailings. The hydrologic properties of cover materials were determined by in situ measurements and laboratory experiments, which, in turn, were used as input in a numerical model that described the cover’s transient soil moisture profile. The successful performance of the cover is reliant on the long-term stable geochemical behaviour of the substrate used as cover material. Therefore, investigations were carried out to determine the geochemical properties of the cover materials constructed from benign waste rock using static and kinetic tests, with the objective to increase the level of certainty of the material’s benign characteristics. The Emmaville district is located in the northern part of the New England region of New South Wales some 400 miles north of Sypney. Better known for its substantial production of tin and tungsten ores, the Emmaville district has also been the centre of a small and somewhat sporadic production of copper, arsenic, silver, lead and zinc. This production has come principally from three mines-Webb's Silver Mine, Webb's Consols and, to a lesser extent, Pye's Creek Silver Mine.The ores from these mixed sulphide deposits are texturally and mineralogically complex and the problems of beneficiation are rather formidable.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe main rock type of the Emmanville district is a dark, brown to blackish massive siltstone of Permian age which overlies acid volcanics possibly also of Permian age. In places the siltstone gives way to conglomerates and standstones with discontinuous lenses of calcareous sediments (David, 1887).The whole series is folded but because of the massive character of the more expansive siltstone, detailed structure is difficult to delineate.Toward the close of Permian time the area was intruded by a series of intermediate to acid plutonic and hypabyssal rocks. Pulang Copper Mine, being China's largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal. Callie underground gold mine is part of the Newmont Tanami Operations, and is now the primary provider of ore to the Granites processing Mill. The Callie underground mine has produced in excess of 7.6 million tonnes (Mtpa) of ore, since production began in 1998, with a current production rate of 1.9 Mtpa. Callie underground uses sublevel open stoping with extraction through a combination of primary and secondary stopes. The primary stope filling strategy utilises cement aggregate fill (CAF) to allow full recovery of secondary stopes. The Callie backfill operation has had a continuous testing program in place during this time, which has resulted in a great deal of information available for post fill analysis. All CAF placement into primary stopes for Callie has been via surface boreholes and this has given Callie mine an understanding of some of the issues related to borehole design, type of linings to use depending on angle, depth and quantity of fill into stopes. Finally backfill barricades at Callie have undergone a number of changes during the time to optimise the design based on whether CAF or sand fill is used. This paper discusses the CAF backfill practices and testing methods used for backfilling operations at Callie.

Gold-silver mineralization at Cracow and Ukalunda in Queensland comprise quartz-filled veins, fissures and breccia zones hosted by propylitically altered volcanics and epizonal intrusions which are strongly fractured. The terrestrial volcanic facies, structural setting, type of alteration and complex mineralogy suggest these deposits are of the epithermal type.The 180 depleted character of the wall-rocks is consistent with the involvement of meteoric waters in convective hydrothermal cells associated with the vulcanism. The Cracow quartzes have remarkably low 6180 values from -2.0 to -3.4 per mil typical. of meteoric hydrothermal systems at high latitude, consistent with the inferred position of Australia during the Permian. 6180 values for the Ukalunda quartzes exhibit a wide range from 5.1 to 14.9 per mil which reflect the mixing of magmatic and meteoric waters, and a steep geothermal gradient.Further stable isotope and geochemical studies are in progress to establish the scale and morphology of the zones of anomalous 6180 and mineralogy in the wallrocks which constitute significant exploration targets.

The planning, permitting and monitoring procedures of the re-opening and rehabilitation of mine sites is an ongoing process which must continue throughout and beyond the life of the project. Both industry and government bodies must remain flexible to allow guidelines to be altered where and when necessary.To enable the successful re-opening of the Morning Star mine at Woods Point in alpine Victoria, many environmental and historical issues had to be evaluated.The site which had been derelict for 28 years had to be rehabilitated to a safe and aesthetically pleasing state prior to construction of a new operating mine site. Considerable liaison with government authorities and the local community was required.

The mining industry has aggressively sought competitiveness through increased productivity and return on investment. A primary strategy has been the pursuit of economies of scale. This has also been dependent upon the implementation of new technology and systems integration. System integration has been accomplished through the implementation of mine dispatch, global positioning and mine wide communication technologies. These technologies have tended to advance at different rates of development and implementation. The result has been that across the industry, and even within companies, mines are at various stages of operational system re-engineering in these areas, driven by improvements in productivity and operational efficiency. Although this strategy has been successful, little effort has been made to analyse change in operational performance in order to understand and model the effects of scale in a quantitative manner. This paper considers the particular impact of equipment scale, together with potential future trends. It then presents and demonstrates a preliminary method to quantify through simulation the anticipated benefits of economies of scale.
