High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

"In 2010, two McLanahan RSS14×50 scrubber screens were installed at Fortescue Metals Group’s (Fortescue) Christmas Creek site. By 2015, the trommel (screen) section had effectively reached the end of their serviceable life. This was determined by regular measurement of structural components over the previous 18 months that tracked wear life. At the same time, numerous trials and optimisations had taken place on screen panel design and material composition. During 2015, a new set of trommels were designed, manufactured and installed that incorporated many new features: increased open area to facilitate high throughput, improved wear protection for structural members, simplified trommel panels and realigned discharge ports to reduce wear on exit. Numerous other upgrades have taken place on the drive system, feed chutes, liner and weir configurations and park brake, to name a few. The shift towards clean energy technologies is having a significant impact on the mining industry, with the demand for minerals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, lithium, manganese, and graphite increasing exponentially. To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, mineral requirements for clean energy technologies would need to quadruple by 2040, and to achieve net-zero globally by 2050, mineral inputs in 2040 would need to be six times more than today. The most significant driver of mineral demand is electric vehicles (EVs) and battery storage, with lithium seeing the fastest growth, and copper demand doubling over the same period due to the expansion of electricity networks globally. The demand for these minerals is expected to rise significantly as investments in clean energy technologies continue to grow in the future. As the world moves towards a decarbonised economy, the minerals industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental and social impacts and meet the increased demand for minerals. Mining companies are facing additional challenges due to the depletion of near-surface mineral deposits globally, with more mines transitioning from open pits to underground. The transition to underground mining requires the right strategy to economically access deeper mineable inventories and to keep up with future clean energy technology demands to achieve net-zero globally by 2050. One key way to achieve this is through decarbonisation using ‘green’ mining technologies such as replacing current primary diesel mining fleets with battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, these measures through electrification overlook the bigger opportunity to maximise the socio-economic returns from the mine while also reducing the overall carbon footprint. Corporate cut-off grade policy is one of the most significant influencers on the total environmental and social impacts of the mining industry. The purpose of a corporate cut-off grade policy is to implement strategies aligned with achieving all the mining companies’ corporate goals, with decarbonisation targets becoming a primary driver for mining companies. Table 1 shows the evolution of cut-off theory with the increasing number of dimensions and driving inputs per iteration.

Stuck drill rods (often referred to as bogged rods) in production ‘upholes’ are a common problem in the underground mining industry. Bogged and broken off drill rods have the potential to fall out of the hole without warning, posing a serious hazard to personnel and equipment below.Current industry practice to alleviate this hazard can be to either grout the hole in order to lock the drill rods in place, or to ‘plate over’ the hole with a rock bolt. Each of these operations seriously delays mine production as both require demobilisation of the production drill and mobilisation of alternative personnel and equipment to address the hazard. Both methods have been assessed for safety and efficiency and were found to be expensive, time consuming and in the case of plating over, ineffective.To address the safety and efficiency short-comings of the traditional practices, the long hole plug (LHP) has been developed to safely secure the lost rods in the hole. The LHP when struck by falling drill rods behaves similar to an expansion shell anchor transferring the axial forces from the falling drill rods horizontally into the rock mass. It is installed using standard production drills allowing work to safely continue with little interruption.Extensive testing has been carried out on the LHP in the laboratory and underground at the Rosebery mine on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Testing has included static pull testing, full scale drop testing and underground trials.The outcome of this work has proven the LHPs ability to add safety, volume and cost benefits to the Rosebery underground operation and it is currently in use at that site. High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. ABSTRACTFor the binary system copper-lead two relationsEquation 1andEquation 2have been derived for the activities of copper and lead at compositions and absolute temperatures within the liquid region of the phase diagram.These relations give, with greater accuracy than is given by previously published relations, the activity-composition temperature variations for all regions of the phase diagram of interest to metallurgists.These relations are essentially simple forms of the Margules equations but with linear temperature dependence applied to their coefficients. This has been done in such a manner that a phase diagram obtained from these relations agrees well with the data available for this system. The methods of obtaining the relations and constructing a phase diagram from them are both given in detail. The enthalpies and entropies of mixing are compared with those derived by other methods.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. The Monty Copper Gold Deposit is an ultra-high grade mine in Sandfire Resource’s Doolgunna region which was completely drilled out and developed within two years of commencing mine development. During this period, a total of 986 grade control diamond drill holes were completed, assayed, and validated, 15 levels developed, and 3136 faces mapped. The aggressive schedule meant a high flow of geological data was produced, validated, and incorporated into regular geological model updates. To process this data at a rate which allowed for timely use, more robust data processing methodologies needed to be generated. A new validation system was implemented which required two levels of validation being applied to any diamond drilling update. Step one was the validation of initial physical data including survey pick-ups and logging. This was done prior to new drill data being added to the geological model. Step two was the validation of assay data which was required prior to resource estimation. The implementation of Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo modelling software also allowed for a more seamless and efficient modelling workflow. The use of the Leapfrog Geo vein systems allowed for more rapid generation of geological models which then afforded more time for stringent assessment of the mineralisation system. An example of this was the introduction of cross-shift peer reviews in which opposing rosters of geologists would rigorously evaluate the previous rosters work prior to reporting. This additional level of validation resulted in more robust geological models and the identification of new ore trends. This presentation will detail the evolution of the Monty Geological model from a simple tabular indicated resource into a complex highly refined measured resource. Themes will include how the model was produced using workflows developed and optimised to meet key deliverables.

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

An empirical method of estimating dense rock (D.R.E.) equivalent volumes erupted as airfall tephra, described in a companion paper in this volume, is elaborated, and its accuracy discussed. Estimates obtained from a single eruption can be classified as to whether they show positive, negative, or constant relative dispersion. For positively dispersed tephras (estimated volumes increasing with distance), this procedure improves the accuracy of the method. The technique is applied to selected andesitic tephras erupted from Egmont Volcano, New Zealand, during the last 28 000 years, which are found to range in volume from about 1.5 x 107 m3 up to about 2.4 x 108 m3 D.R.E. With a factor of about 16 between the smallest and largest volumes, this contrasts sharply with the rhyolite volcanoes in New Zealand, where the difference factor is usually of the order of 100. The largest tephra eruptions at Egmont are small compared to the largest debris avalanches, which have exceeded 1010 m3 (10 km3) in volume.The magnitude versus frequency relationship, calculated using a maximum likelihood method, establishes the limits of eruption magnitude at Mt Egmont as 107 to 109 m3 D.R.E. For some volcanoes, the magnitude-frequency relationship changes with time, owing to clustering of eruptions, separated by long dormant intervals. Ngauruhoe Volcano, New Zealand, is an example. Within eruptive episodes, the mean interval between eruptions of >_ 105 m3 is about 0.9 ¦ 0.65 years. The mean interval between eruptive episodes in which >_ 106 m3 is erupted, including episodes in which this volume is erupted gradually, is about 25.8 ¦ 6.6 years, and the mean dormant interval between all episodes is about 5.2 ¦ 3.0 years. At present Ngauruhoe is in an unusually prolonged dormant period, 50% longer than any in the historical record, since 1839.

Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.

The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

"In the civil tunnelling field, the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has now overtaken the use of conventional excavation methods (drill and blast / roadheader). This is due to a number of reasons, including the increasing availability and reliability of TBMs, the ability to deal with a wider range of face conditions, and the reduced excavation cost that TBMs can bring.Mining companies have spearheaded the advances in shaft boring by mechanised means, both in blind and raise boring. However, mining companies have been slower to adopt mechanised tunnelling.When contrasted with a conventional mining contract, there are good reasons why TBMs in mining applications are relatively rare. A conventional decline contract may have very little geotechnical information. The decline alignment can be subject to change as the tunnelling progresses. The infrastructure requirements are less for a conventional decline, and the sunk cost prior to excavation commencing is lower. Contract documents can be very simple.The history of TBM use in mining is reviewed and lessons are described. From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.We believe that despite the additional requirements for TBM declines, the cost and time advantage to mining companies is very attractive. The challenge is to recognise and to meet the requirements for success in a TBM drive to achieve the advantages of: faster advance rates reduced rock damage/overbreak reduced support requirements uniform muck characteristics greater personnel safety.From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.CITATION:Asche, H R and Mather, D, 2014. The mining industry is relatively niche and complex compared to other global industries in its safety and operating environment. Whilst some of the technology required to decarbonise the mining industry will emerge from the mass market (eg batteries, energy storage solutions and renewable power generation) where exogeneous external investment and innovation will drive supply, bespoke applications such as material movement will be constrained by industry limitations. Underground load and haul equipment burns the majority portion of underground mine diesel, and typically 25 per cent of scope one and two emissions. Transitioning away from incumbent diesel engines offers a considerable health benefit to all mine workers, as well as decarbonisation achievements, and through trials there is emerging evidence of more productive equipment and realistic expectations of lower operating costs of fleet. However, new equipment and material movement systems that support these industry goals are currently approached with caution due to the pivotal role they play in delivering productivity goals, and the lack of experiential data and certainty to mitigate the supplier development risk during this technology transition period, where all resources are required to meet a booming industry. A group of mining companies and suppliers have the aligned aim to accelerate the understanding and availability of heavy haulage mobile equipment through collaboratively piloting equipment and working with suppliers and each other to aggregate market demand, encourage investment and resolve the mine design and technology choices through their involvement in the Electric Mine Consortium (EMC). This paper will outline the major challenges the industry must overcome in sourcing and adopting a zero-diesel particulate and zero-emission mine, drawn from cases and insights across ten EMC mining company members.

Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs.
