In 1984 a new Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) was commenced by the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ); the new program was in response to the withdrawal of the Bureau of Mineral Resources from regional mapping. Areas for mapping were selected in northern and south-eastern Queensland on the basis of potential for mineral discoveries, level of company interest, inaccuracies in the first edition mapping and interests of other organisations (government and universities) in joint projects.Geological provinces of particular interest in northern Queensland are the Hodgkinson Basin, parts of the Georgetown Inlier not covered by earlier BMR-GSQ mapping, Broken River Embayment, Burdekin Basin, Lolworth-Ravenswood Block, Campwyn Block and Anakie Inlier. The 1:250,000 sheets covering these areas of interest are shown in Figure 1 including those already completed, those in progress and those planned for future investigation.A flow chart showing the various phases for RGMP projects is shown in Figure 2. Data collection has two facets: (i) field recording and (ii) office work including air photo interpretation, study of company reports, literature research, petrography and various laboratory studies. Two main strands of information collected are represented by a data base and compilation sheets. Compilation sheets are generally at 1:25,000 scale and are available for purchase. The current data base is very fragmentary and can be accessed only by direct contact with the relevant geologist or via written reports. A more accessible field data base is in the process of being introduced this year; this field data base (REGMAP) is based on standardised data recording and computer storage.

The SRS-1200 concept came about following the recommendations from the Board of Inquiry into the 1994 Moura No 2 mine disaster with the aim of having a system to remove personnel from an unsafe environment underground via a shaft where no other means of escape is possible. It is a mobile rescue unit that utilises a winding system to operate a man cage. It can descend the cage up to 1200 m into a vertical shaft. This operation is managed from the winder control compartment located on the non-driver side at the rear of the vehicle.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. The slight differences are most likely due to the different search strategies, but also indicate the robustness of the unconstrained modelling approach.CITATION:Queen, L D and Tear, S J, 2015. This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. In 2003, NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION, the worldÆs largest gold producer, set out to prove that High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology is sufficiently robust and reliable to be considered for the treatment of hard rock gold ores. In collaboration with POLYSIUS, a significant trial was conducted and 127 600 tonnes processed, successfully proving the HPGR capabilities on the Lone Tree Mine, Nevada ore û one of the most competent and abrasive ores in the industry. The success has led a number of mining companies to consider HPGRs for the comminution of gold and copper ores.

With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

The Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea has 3 major national highways. The locations of these national highways are shown in Figure 1. The Highlands Highway begins at Lae City on the coast and passes through the Highlands towns of Goroka, Kundiawa and Mt Hagen. It terminates at Togoba approximately 10km out of Mt Hagen town. The Enga Highway begins at Togoba and passes through the towns of Wapenamanda, Wabag and Laiagam. It terminates at the giant Porgera Gold Mine. The Southern Highlands Highway also begins at Togoba and passes through the major towns of Mendi, and Tari. It terminates at Koroba station, near the Hides Gas Field. Two separate Feeder roads intersecting the main highway service both the Kutubu Oil Project and the Hides Gas Field. These national Highways play a very important role in the development of Papua New Guinea. Goods and services are delivered to the bulk of the population of the Highlands Region using these highways. Heavy machinery and equipment for the mining and petroleum projects of Porgera, Hides and Kutubu are transported using these roads.

This paper examines a successful project implemented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and the Polymathian team at Deswik, aimed at enhancing short-term scheduling processes to reduce vessel turn times in the BMA Central Queensland coal value chain. The project’s objective was to digitalise the planning process to enable planners to make data-driven insights to improve the profitability of the value chain. The strategy involved developing a digital mining system that incorporates data storage, cloud computing, and the ability to meet the integration needs of both internal and external business systems. This was complemented by a sophisticated, optimisation-based, decision-support tool to enhance the planning teams’ ability to make timely and effective decisions.

Implementing robust safety protocols and technology helps ensure the sustainability of mining operations and contributes to the overall responsible development of the industry. In this work we present how the Chilean lithium mining industry becomes a safer and more compliant industry using digital transformation (Cochilco, 2018; Bradley et al, 2013; Cabello, 2022).

The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn. Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

The Hunter Valley Rail Project (HVRP) represents most of the coal producers using the Hunter Valley Rail System in NSW to haul coal to the port of Newcastle. This system carries over 70 per cent of NSW&apos;s coal exports, comprising over 30 per cent of total Australian coal exports. Hunter Valley coal is the largest export industry in NSW, and one of its largest export growth opportunities. However, the industry is under intense pressure in international markets from existing and new coal producers and from other energy sources. Whilst potential growth in demand is substantial, particularly for thermal coal in Asia, excess world supply has pushed prices down, and this underlying trend may well continue. The industry has lost international competitiveness and as a result, investment has dropped 44 per cent over the last two years. The industry must be rapidly structured to compete and attract investment on the basis that these pressures will continue. Substantial productivity improvement and cost reductions must be made for the industry to regain competitiveness, otherwise growth will not occur and the industry will decline, with serious implications for the Australian and NSW communities. The introduction of internationally competitive rail freight rates is an urgent and essential part of this process. It is the key objective of the HVRP.

Re-commencement of mining in the Western Zone of Beaconsfield Gold Mine following a seismically-induced rockfall fatality in April 2006 required a change of mining method involving drilling and blasting from specially developed drives in the footwall of the orebody. Broken ore is mucked remotely from ore drives on each level. Support in the footwall drives is required to maintain stability during their development and as stopes are retreated, which increases induced stresses and further seismic events are triggered. The paper outlines the challenges involved and methods used to select the footwall drive support to handle both static and dynamic load demand. The importance of load development in the support system, its displacement capacity, the compatibility of support elements and energy absorption capacity of the support system are highlighted. It is usual in any support selection process to ensure that capacity exceeds demand to create a factor of safety. In this case the demands on the system relate to load, displacement and energy absorption and the support system capacity for each must ensure that appropriate factors of safety for each are achieved. The paper shows how these factors are not independent and that selecting a high factor of safety for load can lead to compatibility problems with support elements in the support system.

In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

In recent decades the awareness of environmental issues by the general public has developed at an accelerat- ing rate. This is the result of a number of factors including more scientific knowledge of environments and of the impacts of modern society upon them, higher levels of education, the opportunity for people to travel more, and the success of the various communication media in bringing in- formation to the communities of the world about such environmental crises or threats as the smogs of Los Angeles and London, the Torrey Canyon and Santa Barbara oilspills, Minamata disease in Japan, the spread of the Crown of Thorns starfish, the disposal of toxic industrial wastes into the Upper Rhine, the discovery of high mercury and zinc contents in marine foods in southern Australian waters, and the proposal to mine limestone at Precipitous Bluff in Tasmania.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRLÆs Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRLÆs Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the sealÆs ultimate design strength. Size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.
