A relational database in which its complex contents can be navigated through a map interface (ie spatially enabling) is relatively a new concept yet attractive for geoscience fields. This concept is made possible using the new breed of geographic information system (GIS) that utilises component object model and relational database management system. Such sophisticated yet open and highly interoperable platform makes possible the integration of data management, analysis, and modeling processes into single workflow. Taking benefit of this technology trend, several initiatives emerge in geoscience to establish digital data models, such as the petroleum industry, the North America digital geologic map data model, and the ESRI geology data model. The mining industry unfortunately has not followed same paths due to the lack of data model and standards in its history. This paper presents an effort on establishing a digital data model for mining-related geoscience databases. The aim is to promote several standards by proposing a preliminary data model and demonstrating that the model is working for the mining business datasets. The case study is the island of Java, the western part of the Sunda island arc of Indonesia. Many types of datasets, such as geologic maps, topography, mineral deposits, structures, geochemical and geophysical data were dealt with and were transformed relational geologic databases of Java using the new Geodatabase geographic data model. Intelligent GIS tools were investigated for geologic applications, ranging from generic to specific purposes. Subtypes and domain were used to set up constraints, while topology rules and relationship classes were used to create links among data layers. The linear referencing system was used to model drillhole data. The current results show that the generic GIS and relational database can handle typical tasks related with mining business datasets. A preliminary data model is finally suggested.

Underground metalliferous mining methods often result in the formation of vertical openings to facilitate the extraction of orebodies. These development and production techniques can result in the creation of vertical open voids, which include stopes, orepasses, ventilation raises and other excavations. There are risks associated with the use of mobile plant in the vicinity of these voids, especially during backfilling and when bunds are constructed at the edge of a stope or void. These voids can present unacceptable risks if not adequately managed.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

That the glory of most mining camps is evanescent forms an axiom to which it may be expected Waihi will prove no exception. For the last fifteen years, however, Waihi has been an important gold-silver producer, with an annually increasing output, so that now the area ranks as one of the leading goldfields of the world.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been developed based upon field data collected from a longwall mine in New South Wales, Australia to study the behaviour of goaf gas flow in both active and sealed goaf areas. A base CFD model was built to represent the goaf situations when the active longwall retreats near the finish-off line. Results from the base model were calibrated and compared against field goaf gas monitoring data. The base model was then used to carry out parametric studies to investigate a number of operational scenarios and their impact on goaf gas behaviour. CFD modelling results indicate that the overall goaf gas flow pattern changes as the operating longwall retreats towards finish-off line. In all cases, oxygen penetration into the active goaf remains high, reaching 15 per cent or higher, even at some 800 m behind the longwall face.The modelling results also indicated that it would be difficult for early detection of an active goaf heating (on the maingate side) based upon CO readings in the return airflow, as the main stream of the gaseous product will be flowing into the sealed deep goafs in adjacent longwall (LW) panels. Monitoring points (such as tube bundles and bag sampling points) should be selected at deep seated seals along the active goaf so that abnormal CO or C2H6 readings can be picked up for early detection and location of potential heating spots; goaf inertisation can be better achieved by injecting inert gas such as nitrogen at deeper points (>200 m) behind the operating longwall; the injection of in-seam drainage methane into the goaf areas will only have a limited impact on goaf inertisation as much of the injected methane will migrate towards deep and higher parts of the goaf due to its buoyancy effect.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified low factor-of-safety due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the low factor-of-safety area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model. Electronic detonators and blast initiation systems were combined with advanced blast vibration modelling software to produce optimal timing sequences with predictable vibration outcomes. Although minimising vibration was the primary focus, blasting induced frequency was also a concern for the project team and therefore initiation sequencing was optimised to also avoid undesirable frequencies. Minor variations in ground factors (vibration transmission and attenuation) were noted, and therefore justified the inclusion of regular signature holes which allowed continual vibration model updates. Blasting results produced vibration and frequency measurements within allowable limits and closely resembled the predictive model. These positive results were achievable through the combination of electronic detonators, advanced modelling software and good onsite practices by engineering and on-bench teams alike. This project will remain ongoing as the pit progresses to deeper benches, and therefore the same methodology will be applied; quality and continual data collection, the use of electronic detonators, and optimisation via advanced vibration and frequency modelling software. The limited contrast range of conventional black and white imaging does not enable full use to be made of the dynamic range of the video signal obtained from a scanning electron microscope or microprobe. The use of false colour substantially increases the information that can be derived from such images enabling relationships to be displayed that cannot be observed in black and white. This capability is now used extensively in combination with quantitative electron microprobe analysis as a research tool for ore characterization and host rocks studies related to minerals exploration in the CSIRO Division of Exploration Geoscience.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

The requirement for rapid vertical development for underground ventilation is often a factor when dealing with dynamic mine plans, with short vertical developments being used to optimise ventilation systems. In an effort to increase the safety and efficiency of the constructions, a simple and effective sinking methodology is required that is both adaptable and repeatable. A modified shaft construction methodology is proposed that attempts to minimise risk to the personnel as well as be cost-effective. Readily available equipment is used to ensure adaptability to the various environments and shaft parameters.One of the greatest risks of shaft sinking is having personnel working suspended over open cavities or underneath suspended loads. Removing this risk, by ensuring all construction is done from solid ground, allows for safer sinking operations. As the process is repeatable, familiarity and confidence in its construction sequence will increase with each successive sink.A trial sink is performed with a 3.6 m diameter, 20 m deep shaft. The shaft was excavated using a conventional strip-and-line philosophy, with the shaft then being lined from the collar via the use of large diameter corrugated steel culverts. The annulus between the steel culverts and shaft excavation is then filled with a concrete mixture to secure it in position.The new process was successful, with no personnel at any time during the process being suspended above an open excavation. The installation had relatively low capital and operational costs and was completed faster than an equivalent, conventional concrete-lined shaft construction. Therefore when compared to conventional shaft-sinking methods, this process can be considered safer, more efficient and relatively cost-effective.Further research is required to determine whether this method can be expanded to larger vertical developments.CITATION:Markoski, R and Grealish, P, 2014. Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. Competing requirements for land usage sometimes make the correct all- ocation difficult. The decision can be complicated by many factors such as local resident pressure, previous government decisions, economic pres- sures and the duration or permanency of the competing land usages. This problem often confronts the extractive industries with consequent delays in granting leases and some- times considerable local dissension. A proposal to extend the high grade silica sand quarry of the Wamberal Sand Company Pty. Limited is a microcosm of these competing requirements. The sand quarry is located on the New South Wales central coast. It is an open pit operation on a near beach deposit of silica sand suitable for flint glass manufacture.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques. With export and to less extent local market unpredictability, it is vital to produce mine establishment times to allow advantage to be taken of market upswings and there is great need for research and improvement of mine access construction as the major aspect of establish- ment.

After a short theoretical comparison of various typical large bell tops with the bell-less top for segregation and other ,ffects on the material flowing through the equipment proper, a comparative analysis between classical and the new burdening in the furnace is given, showing the theoretical effects of distribution and segregation on the horizontal pressure variations, temperature values and gas composition in the stack. Then some typical theoretical charging patterns of the bell-less top for wall and centre temperature adjusting, pressure drop corrections, dissymmetric local action for blow-in and scaffolding are described. Finally the available practical results on furnaces equipped with the bell-less top are compared with the theoretical statements made before and conclusions indicate that the new approach to burdening blast furnaces is a real improvement.

A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the hightemperature cracking of crude oils. During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

"Fluidised-bed flotation has been demonstrated over the last 16 years as an effective method for improving the flotation recovery of coarse particles. This technology has been successfully deployed into the industrial mineral sector with multiple installations within phosphate beneficiation plants and potash mills. Due to the minimal mineral surface expression required when utilising this technology, more recent studies have centred on the applicability of using this HydroFloat™ technology for the recovery of coarse sulfides and base metals. Multiple approaches have been investigated to determine the best means for implementing this novel coarse particle flotation system into both existing and new plant circuitry. These include the treatment of tailings to recover values that have been lost using conventional technologies and also the direct treatment of a coarse feed, either within the grinding circuit or by use of a separate split-feed flotation approach. Recent applications of the technology will be presented along with data generated from several test campaigns and ongoing research investigations. The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association was incorporated as the NZ Mineral Exploration Association in 1982, with a membership that consisted of the gold exploration companies then active in New Zealand . As its membership broadened, it changed its name to the Mining and Exploration Association in 1994, and more recently the Minerals Industry Association. It is a non-profit-making incorporated society relying on voluntary membership, and is not funded by industry levies.   It has employed a full time executive director since 1988 when Robyn Ross was appointed, followed by John Pfahlert (1991 - 1996) and now with Doug Gordon managing the Association.   The Association is one of a number of organisations that represent the mining industry in New Zealand. Others include the Coal Association of NZ (CANZ), the Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), The West Coast Commercial Gold Miners Association and Minerals West Coast.   NZMIA membership comprises the main exploration and mining companies that account for over 80 per cent of New Zealand Æs mine output, and nearly all of its exploration investment. Its membership has expanded from gold exploration to encompass exploration and mining companies active in coal, gold, aggregates and industrial minerals.   The Association has developed a National Minerals Strategy that determines its priorities, implemented via a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee. This group was established six years ago to advise the Associate Minister of Energy on issues relating to the long term development of the minerals sector in New Zealand.
