Perseverance nickel deposit is located at latitude 27¦ 491S, longitude 1200 42'E, 330 km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Gossanous outcrops were discovered in April, 1971, and after further detailed surface investigations, percussion drilling led to diamond drilling by June, 1971. Up to December, 1972, 127 diamond holes totalling 45,590 m were drilled to indicate 33 million tonnes averaging 2.2% Ni using a 1% cut-off grade. The deposit occurs in a lenticular ultra- mafic unit emplaced in metasediments locally forming the eastern flank of the Archaean green- stone belt trending NNW from Leonora to Wiluna. To the east a major strike fault separates the metasediments from gneiss; westwards there is a sequence of metavolcanics with further ultra- mafic units. Length of the lens is 3500 m and it attains a maximum width of 800 In. The eastern contact is moderately regular, but the western contact is prominently embayed. Local strikes are NNW, and dips are steeply W. A set of strike faults cuts the ultramafics and enveloping quartzites. These are normal faults, parallel to the major eastern fault, dipping 65-70¦W. Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

The steelmaking desulfurisation plays an important role in coal-based steelmaking route of blast furnace and BOF converter within the flow sheet of BF-deS-BOF. With the advent of H2-based ironmaking and steelmaking process, the transition flow sheet of DRI-Smelter-BOF has been assessed and developed by the steelmaking industry. What is the role of deS in H2-based route of DRI-smelter-BOF? This paper will present the influence of sulfur-containing iron ore on steelmaking desulfurisation and the leading role of EAF-smelter played in H2-based steelmaking route. The sulfur contents of iron ore vary considerably around the world and lower-grade iron ores with high sulfur are likely to be used for H2-based route, a considerable amount of sulfur that comes from DRI will report to the melt of EAF-smelter and the operating conditions of EAF-smelter also impact the sulfur content of the hot melt for steelmaking deS. The EAF-smelter of H2-based route is the focus of the steelmaking industry at moment, unfortunately, an industrial-scale EAF-smelter has been the missing link of the flow sheet of DRI-Smelter-deS-BOF, despite similar EAF-smelters being used for various applications of Fe-Ti and Fe-Ni processes. The latest progress is that several pilot-scale and industrial-scale EAF-smelters with reducing capability are planned for construction within next several years and low-grade Australia iron ores are certainly to be employed as basic feedstocks for H2-based route of DRI-Smelter-deS-BOF.

New plant has been commissioned to treat off-gases from the Fluo-solids Reactor in the Copper Smelter. The new section of plant was built onto an operating system and commissioned with minimum disruption to production. Under construction is a 270 m tall stack for Lead Smelter gases. Additional items for the Lead Smelter will include a new gas cooler, a central baghouse to replace Sinter Plant wet gas scrubbers, a new exhaust fan on the main baghouse, and ducting of drossing gases to the main baghouse. Emphasis is given to discussing improvements the new plant has made to working conditions, the general environment and increased production capability. Total expenditure in the two smelters is in the order of $25 million.

Intrusion related Cu/Au mineralisation is localised in Pacific Rim island arcs by arc parallel, termed accretionary structures; or arc normal, termed transfer structures. In Papua New Guinea, NE trending transfer structures, evident on Landsat imagery, represent deep crustal fractures which have facilitated dextral rotation of the mainland during oblique plate collision. Major structures localise intrusion centres, and by rotation, develop ore hosting dilational environ-ments in subsidiary structures. While transfer structures localise the Porgera, Wafi and Yandera porphyry centres, the Frieda Porphyry and associated Nena high sulphidation Cu/Au mineralisation are localised by accretionary structures. The Bulolo Graben, which hosts the Morobe Goldfield, developed during intra arc rifting aided by movement on transfer structures. Crustal thinning has initiated magmatism with which diatreme breccias and fracture controlled mineralisation are associated.

After considerable input from the mining industry, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) finalised National Instrument 43-101: Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects. This Instrument, which became law across Canada on 1 February 2001, applies to all technical public disclosure on mineral projects and requires all technical disclosure to be based on the work of a æqualified personÆ (QP). While the QP is quite similar to the Competent Person in Australia there are important differences when it comes to all disclosure. This paper will summarise the main areas in which the Instrument introduces major changes to Canadian disclosure standards on mineral projects including the role and responsibility of the qualified person; the increased requirements to file technical reports; the incorporation by reference of the October 2000 CIM definitions of resources and reserves and additional rules governing written disclosure of scientific and technical information. In October 2001, eight months after the implementation of NI 43-101, the CSA compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and CSA responses to assist mining industry participants and their advisors in understanding and applying NI-43-101. This document has been well received by industry. The CSA plans to update the FAQs when further guidance is requested. Two industry committees have been established to provide the CSA with technical advice on the application of NI 43-101. As recommended by the Ontario Securities Commission/Toronto Stock Exchange Mining Standards Task Force, the CSA has established an external industry advisory committee û the Mining Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (MTAMC) û to monitor the application of NI 43-101 and advise the CSA on industry and professional developments. The role of the CSA-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Working Committee on Reserves and Resources is to ensure that the future changes and updates to the CIM Standards can be efficiently and effectively incorporated in NI 43-101. During this first year, the Canadian securities regulators have seen an improvement in the quality of disclosure on mineral projects, which will increase investor confidence in the industry.

"Mining geology as a defined profession is only about 100 years old. The successful modern mine geologist needs to be a multidisciplinarian, but also needs to maintain a focus on the key outputs of the role. The technical skills needed in the role have increased as mining methods move to increasingly mechanised techniques. As well as being the guardian of the orebody and ensuring minimal dilution to expected ore grades, the mine geologist should be competent in the 12-point mine geology process. In 1948, it became clear that the ventilation system of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines, would be inadequate for future operations. The,paper describes in detail the process of designing an entirely new ventilation system for a large underground mining operation. The system was based on a single new upcast airway to be located on the boundary of the two properties, which were to be ventilated in parallel as two separate ventilating districts.From calculations of resistance, and assessments of future air requirements, the duties of a new exhaust fan to be located on the collar of the upcast airway were specified as 700,000 cubic feet per minute at 2·6 in. w.g. total pressure for initial operation in 1953 increasing to a maximum of 900,000 c.f.m. at 3·6 in. w:g. total pressure ten years later. The economic size of the new airway was calculated from a consideration of the first thirty years operation of the system, and it was decided to provide a 20 ft. diameter concrete-lined shaft.The new system went into operation five years after the initial planning, and the effect of the difference between actual and predicted rates and distribution or production are discussed. The final result was entirely satisfactory.INTRODUCTIONThe first proposal for an investigation of The Zinc Corporation Limited-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited ventilation system with a view to putting it on a proper technical basis was made in 1938. Fatality prevention and zero harm are key focus areas for resource companies. However, they remain an ongoing challenge for high hazard industries, including the mining sector. As one example the latest International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Safety Performance Report shows that, while there is generally a declining fatality trend since the organisation commenced publishing data in 2012, there were still 33 fatalities across member companies in 2022 (ICMM, 2023b). Every fatal incident brings significant pain and suffering to the colleagues, friends and family of those involved, however the failures and causal factors leading to each incident are frequently very familiar to people working in the industry, particularly those tasked with managing risk and safety. In the words of Dame Judith Hackitt, Grenfell Tower Fire Investigator, ‘there are no new accidents – just different people making the same mistakes because they haven’t learned’ (Hackitt, 2022). The recurring themes in terms of the nature of fatal hazards and their associated causes across the mining sector show that, despite improvements evidenced by the favourable declining fatality trends over the long-term (in general and outside of catastrophic multiple fatality events), changes are required to achieve fatality elimination and the aspiration of zero harm. This extended abstract and the accompanying presentation apply a mining frame of reference to the idea that there are no new accidents, examining how this applies within the industry and why the lessons from past failures are not always well understood or applied to prevent the reoccurrence of material unwanted events. Many contemporary mining and resources organisations have extensive internal incident history data and a wide variety of information on fatality incidents is publicly available, including the annual ICMM Safety Performance Report. This extended abstract and the accompanying presentation explore how this existing data can be used effectively to learn from the past and proposes practical ideas regarding strategies for successful knowledge transfer to the workforce as a key component of preventing history repeating and improving safety performance across the industry. As noted by ICMM, ‘sharing lessons from failure is vital to improving health and safety, but it’s not enough’ (ICMM, 2023a).

Backfill systems using unconventional cementitious hinders have been successfully used in relatively deep and hard rock tabular mines for longwall, scattered stoping and shaft pillar removals. Two unconventional cementitious systems are discussed: 1. A ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) with an activator containing lime. This has been used with a total tailings 'stable' slurry at a relatively low dosage of less than seven per cent, by mass, based on dry solids. The room and pillar stopes supported with this fill were up to 20 in high and the tailings were relatively high in pyrite. .\ GGBS binder plus a silicate based activator and gelling agent that virtually eliminated all water drainage (and hence post filling shnnkage). The system used a slurry, but the addition of the ;iutivator created a final placed product that had the behaviour of a paste. The system has been successfully used for almost ten years in the following applications: ò sloping widths (mining heights) above 1.6 in; and ò shaft pillar removals in seismically active areas at the end of the life of the shafts. \This paper discusses the technical merits and costs of the systems and compares them to other fill systems (including true paste systems).

Open stoping is one of the widely adopted methods in underground bulk mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sublevel in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. A mass stope blast may involve blasting rock from multi-level drift rounds and displacing the muck to specific locations in order to allow safe and easy access for ore removal. This paper presents a strategic mass stope blast that took place at a large lead and zinc underground mine in eastern Canada. The blast consisted of more than 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different sublevels. The challenge lay in the control of ground vibration and muck movement using precise timing to complete the blasting within 6.5 seconds. During this time span, sufficient voids were created in each level to allow the muck to move from the upper to the lower levels in sequential order across the six mining blocks without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement as well as the application of electronic detonators. These detonators provided the means to accomplish the desired firing sequence including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modelling concept is also described in the paper.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. For effective backfilling, a system with the 13 features covered under the section: effective backfill systems, is required. Effective backfilling cannot be done with systems that are badly designed, outdated or overextended. But in cases where the requirements for effective backfilling are overlooked, the shortcomings of such systems may wrongly come to be regarded as limitations to the capabilities of backfilling per se. Mining is currently done to depths of 3500 m, and is to go deeper since the gold-bearing reef extends down to 4000 m and 5000 m below surface. Effective backfilling systems will be required at such depths, and with suitable design this can be achieved. Mining the narrow tabular orebody of a typical South African gold mine is described at the start of this paper, then cycloned backfilling is discussed in general, and its effectiveness (most of the fill placed in South Africa is cycloned backfill or ædeslimed tailingsÆ).

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. A cover of inert material overlain by topsoil is required over compacted, seawater-neutralised red mud, a waste product from the refining of bauxite to produce alumina. The cover is to be revegetated, and it is necessary to demonstrate that the potential evapotranspirative-driven uptake of salts from the seawater-neutralised red mud will not impact the revegetation. An instrumented column was designed and constructed to test the evaporation-driven uptake of salts from compacted red mud into an overlying cover material with a thickness limited to 600 mm. The PVC column is 1.2 m high, with a 200 mm internal diameter. The column is instrumented with up to ten of each of moisture, suction, salinity and temperature sensors, together with a data logger, designed and manufactured at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. The sensors were installed through the wall of the column at various depth intervals, with each set of sensors located at quarter points around the circumference of the column. Two pressure transducers were installed in the column to monitor the change of water level due to rainfall and evaporation. The column was filled with compacted red mud to a depth of 600 mm overlain by 600 mm of cover material, both sourced from the Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) site in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The column is installed on a building roof at UQ, alongside a weather station, and will be subjected to the prevailing weather conditions for up to 1 year in the first instance, during which time the weather conditions and sensor responses will be continuously monitored. The Mt Sinivit gold project is located approximately 50km SSW of Rabaul in the Baining Mountains of the Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province. The deposits were discovered in mid- 1983 and form part of a larger 26km long zone of variably aurif- erous quartz veining. There are no surface indications or previ- ous records of any prospecting activity or production from the region. The Mt Sinivit deposits consist of a series of oxide and sulphide reserves and resources contained in the Wild Dog (South- ern, Central and Northern oxide zones; Northern sulphide zone) and Kavursuki veins. The proposed exploitation of the oxide reserves by a series of small-medium sized open pits has been fostered by the PNG Department of Mining & Petroleum (DMP) as part of a government policy to encourage the development of a small-medium sized mining industry in the country. The aim of this paper is to document the steps and procedures involved in obtaining the grant of a Mining Lease emphasising the time and the expenditures required during each step of the approvals process for the Mt Sinivit project.

Since the independent review of fatal accidents in the mining industry carried out by Dr Sean Brady (the ‘Brady Review’), High Reliability Organisations (HROs) and their operating principles have been discussed across the Queensland mining sector. HROs are organisations said to consistently avoid serious failures, reliably delivering their organisational objectives despite operating in environments characterised by high levels of inherent risk and/or operational complexity. HRO concepts have previously found application in other similarly hazardous industries to mining. However, as Hopkins (2009) pointed out, HROs ‘are very elusive creatures that inhabit the realm of theory more than the real world’. The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) with support from the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health initiated a review of how HRO principles can be translated to the mining industry. The review was conducted by Noetic, an Australian management consulting company that specialises in hazardous industries, including mining and metals, and has prior experience applying HRO theory.
