Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

The preamble to the mining Act sets out that such Act is to provide for the encouragement and regulation of mining within the State of Queensland. This paper will attempt to follow the legislative path of such aim and in particular to show what part Mining Wardens play in the administration of the Mining Act.The Mining Act empowers the Governor in Council to constitute Mining Districts and Mining Fields and to appoint any duly qualified officer of the Public Service of Queensland to be a Warden or a Mining Registrar. As a matter of practice Stipendiary Magistrates who hold office in the major centre within a Mining District are appointed Wardens and Clerks of the Court are appointed Mining Registrars. In some districts where there is no Stipendiary Magistrate the Clerk of the Court is appointed an Acting Warden with all the powers of a Warden. Every Warden so appointed is a Warden for the whole State.To achieve impartiality Section 74 of the Mining Act provides that a Warden shall not hold or be entitled (directly or indirectly) to the benefits of any share or interest in a mining tenement or mining venture and provides a penalty of $1000 or imprisonment for six months or both, for contravention of such section.

Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. The industry’s hopes for new projects have been dashed and questions are being raised as to the financial viability of such projects.A comparison of Grange Resources Savage River, Arrium’s Project Magnet, the Sino Iron Project and Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Project is used to understand the differences between the projects and why some are more successful than others.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2015. It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. In the past various systems have been used to plan the extraction of ore from block cave operations. These systems have varied from rather sophisticated models with empirical ægravity flowÆ rules applied to the very rudimentary models where only the recorded mined tonnageÆs have been accounted for against the available resource. The normal requirement of these models has been to only plan the movement of ground through the drawpoints. Little cognisance has been taken of the other parameters that affect the total mining operations. The intended purpose of the linear program planning system is to not only include the management, resource availability and geotechnical constraints, but to also include the mining rules. The paper will discuss the various constraints that have been considered, and attempt to illustrate where the system better serves the production system than previous ones. A brief technical discussion on the linear programming system is included.

Simple parameters, capable of easy observation on-site under operating conditions without interruption to production, are outlined for the operational assessment of underground conveyor systems. Recording techniques, methods of analysis and deduction of operational characteristics are discussed for batch inputs to several points of a multiple belt conveyor system with limited inter-belt storage capacity. Particular attention is given to input and output load- time distributions, utilisation of inter-belt storage capability and system shutdown behaviour. Actual data, observed for a transfer feeder located between two trunk conveyor belts in an underground coal mine, is used to illustrate the operational assessment of an underground system. Load sensitive feedback systems-are briefly considered.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, has elevated metal concentrations and low pH characteristic of acid mine drainage (AMD). Dissolved aluminium concentrations average 8.3 ppm, iron 1.4 ppm, manganese 0.69 ppm, and zinc 0.12 ppm and pH ranges from 2.8 to 3.2. Flow rates range from 2.3 to 26.6 L/s with an average of 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different treatment strategies, a small amount of the AMD was diverted through three small-scale passive AMD remediation systems over an eight month period. These included a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC). Both the RAPS and the LLB performed well, effectively removing metals and restoring pH. The RAPS lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 97%, manganese 95%, and zinc 80% and the LLB lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 99%, manganese 92%, and zinc 91%. The pH was restored to between 6.4 and 7.4 by the RAPS and to between 7.3 and 7.9 by the LLB. The OLC performed well as long as the residence time was similar to that of the other treatment systems. OLC removal rates for aluminium was up to 99%, iron 94%, and manganese 21%, and the pH was restored up to 5.6. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, it is proposed the LLB be constructed to fullscale size to treat the entire Herbert Stream.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

In this paper a quantitative deterministic risk modelling approach (Quadrim) is introduced. The mathematical framework and equations for quantifying uncertainty within and aggregating across value chain nodes from error propagation techniques is proposed and discussed. A case study and worked examples, based on a hypothetical mine are then presented. This illustrates how uncertainty from the mining and economic value chains can be handled in a typical net cash flow calculation, and how this can be translated to a risk model. It is then illustrated that current valuation techniques do not just result in an information gap for decision makers. Traditional approaches such as discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and truck and shovel productivity analysis, which do not take into account uncertainty in input values, can result in potential bias in estimates such as net present value (NPV) or equipment hours

"Most mineral processing plants have high water requirements for their operational activities. These plants often function in an environment where water is becoming increasingly scarce. An increase in population will result in an increased demand for water; potentially beyond the limits of supply and hence increased competition for the resource. In South Africa, Gauteng and the North West Province are likely to be first to experience a shortage of potable water.In order to avoid a water crisis, efforts must be made to ensure the effective management of water resources and the minimisation of wastage. Hydrometallurgical plants have a responsibility to society and the environment to operate in a sustainable manner - reducing their water requirements will certainly assist towards developing a sustainable footprint.This project improved site water management by: surveying the potable water and storm water systems with a view to assessing the current water accountability and determining methods to improve accountability determining the monthly and yearly water balance for the site and presenting it in the form of a water balance sheet drawing up an input-output and operational model in accordance with the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs æWater Accounting Framework for the Minerals IndustryÆ calculating the water footprints of the refinery identifying ways in which water savings could be achieved recommending management systems for water usage monitoring.This work was conducted in South Africa.
