Forecasts of future timber consumption in soft-coal mining are handicapped by the lack of adequate experience records for estimating properly the timber requirements of the industry. Data were obtained from plants where records are kept or from operators who collected the information and to these were added composite figures for the continental United States in 1905 and 19191 and for central and western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928,000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross ban used per ton of coal mined and the percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. The Lead-Line Update held in conjunction with the 1977 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in St. Louis provided sessions on mining, mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, and economies to brief the record on the industry's activities and developments since the 1970 World Symposium on Lead and Line convened, also in St. Louis. Changes in the industry since 1970 have not been profound, notes the program committee, consisting of D. O. Rausch, F. M. Stephens, and B.C. Mariacher, cochairmen; and H. L. Clifford, S. C. Fall), and M. Snedeker. However, various environmental and conservation factors have had a direct impact on process consideration and operating practice; the result has been new mines, improved technology, and changing market opportunities. The general consensus of the participants is that the future for the Lead-zinc industry looks promising as new applications are found and new products resulting from intensive research reach the marketplace. The highlights of the HS technical papers presented at the 1977 session follows.

When I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in I9I6—that is, about 25 years ago—in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father— Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother— Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature, is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-clrbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable. tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass ... by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half-initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes—and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration: It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. it tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. Its application, in absence of true equilibrium, is like determining density with a telescope or even with a tuning fork; it is like the mad tea party at which the butter put into the works of the watch was the best butter. In their account of chromium, Roscoe and Schorlemmer (Treatise on Chemistry, London, 1879) state that "In 1762 Lehmann, in a letter to Buffon, de nova minerœ plumbi specie crystalline rubra, described a new mineral from Siberia, now termed crocoisite." In 1786 Lehmann analyzed it (Nicholson's Jour., Dee., 1798) and found that it contained chiefly lead, and that the " mineralizers " were arsenic and sulphur. It was next examined in 1189 by Macquart and Vauquelin, who stated that it contained an intimate mixture of iron, alumina, and lead peroxide. The account of their work was published over the name of Macquart. Vauquelin (Louis-Nicolas) was a Norman peasant, who had studied in the village school, and at the age of fourteen was a laboratory-boy in a pharmacy at Rouen. Later, he found his way to Paris, and in 1789 was assistant to Fourcroy, a pharmacist and a teacher of note. It was here that he met Macquart, with whom he did the work on Siberian red lead, and at this time his friend Cheradame taught him his Latin.

The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as com- pared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams. Coal at Wales, in Sanpete county, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it "rock that would burn." In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe. New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.

THE wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Mont., are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte, hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 ½ in. rope. 5 main hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 6 shafts using 1 1/8 in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 1 1/8 in. rope. 15 shafts using 1 in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8 in. rope. 1 shaft using ¾ in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines using 5/8 in., ¾ in., 7/8 in., and 1 in. (15.9, 19, 22, and 25 mm. rope.) The flat ropes run from ½ by 7 ½ in. (12.7 by 190.5 mm.) to ½ by 4 ½ in. (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting-engines, which are set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties in operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes.

Kansas produced 41,966,773 bbl. of oil in the year 1927, thereby taking fourth place among the oil-producing states of the Union. The daily average production decreased from 121,609 bbl. in January to 110,244 bbl. in December. Due to excessive flush production and the resulting decline in the price of crude during the year, operations, both in proved and outlying districts, were reduced materially from those of 1926. There were 2338 completions in 1926, but only a total of 1333 in 1927. Regardless of this decrease in the total number of completions, Kansas made a slight gain in total production for the year, producing 620,262 bbl. more than in 1926. This is accounted for, in part, by the comparative long life of the settled production from the Bartlesville sand areas to the east of the Nemaha granite ridge, and by prolific production in eastern Summer County from horizons new in their importance in the state, productive here at two localities along the axis of the granite ridge (Table 1 and Figs. 1, 2 and 3.) For convenience in further consideration, the state is divided into Eastern and "Western" Kansas. Special emphasis will be placed on those areas in the state of which but little is generally known, and which have not been given detailed consideration in previous publications.

IT is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,1 in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2:0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad.

ONE of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic-for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel-but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. . In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the: speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against over-winding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of snaking their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption', increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased, cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but tinder some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting mien or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from, any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any, practical benefit.

The Cæur d'Alene silver-lead mining district of northern Idaho is probably best known to the general public as a seat of labor-troubles. So far as the writer is aware, little has been written and little is known about its geology and resources. People interested in lead-smelting are, of course, cognizant of the economic importance of the region, but they have not communicated much of their knowledge to the public. Exact figures as to the total output of the district are not obtainable, but the following estimates, covering the entire output of the 15 years during which the mines have been operated, are believed to be approximately correct: Group of Mines. Wardner Group, including the Bunker Hill and Sul livan, Empire State-Idaho, Last Chance, Sierra Nevada, bur d'Alene Development Co... . $17,500,000 Cafion Creek Group, including the Gem, Frisco Con solidated, Granite, Standard, Mammoth, Hecla, Tiger-Poorman, Custer and Bell,.... 35,000,000 Mullan Group, including the Morning, You Like and Gold Hunter,........7,500,000 $60,000,000 This output covers the period of discovery and early struggles, and several periods of stagnation caused by strikes and other serious labor-troubles. In 1900 the output of the district was fully $10,000,000, and this figure would have been considerably increased in 1901 had not a curtailment of production been forced by the condition of the lead-market. In 1901 the product was about 150,000 tons of concentrates, with a gross. value of $8,250,000.

Widespread wildcatting for new supplies of natural gas and the beginning of importation from the southwest characterized the petroleum industry of West Virginia during 1944. Within the state, drilling for oil did not increase but. more gas wells were completed than in any previous year since 1937. Out of 40 wildcats drilled there were 25 gas discoveries and 15 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 40 wells. The proved limits of several oil pools were slightly extended by marginal drilling, resulting in 1300 acres of new oil territory, although no distinctly new pools were found. At least four new gas pools were assuredly discovered and various successful wildcats indicate future pools or wide extensions. The new proved gas territory, in definite new pools and definite extensions, is about 34,000 acres. A considerable net decline of proved oil has occarred and probably a slight decline of proved gas reserves. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 918 new wells were drilled, resulting in 71 oil wells with 613 bbl. of daily new production; 577 gas wells with 305,372,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 142 dry holes. Also, 107 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 22 bbl. and 12,327,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 8.6 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 529,241 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 15.47 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 19.63 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil Weekly as 3,069,000 bbl., as compared with 3,349,000 bbl. in 1943. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 200,000, 000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 223,789,000,000 cu. ft.t in 1943.

The times at which the first detectable amount of a phase forms at temperatures between 900° and 1800°F were determined. Both X-ray diffraction and metallography were used to detect a in highly strained filings; metallography alone to detect it in annealed bulk samples of six different types of stainless steels. The a phase was found to form in accordance with the C-type reaction curve in both austenitic and ferritic alloys. In filings of types 304, 347, and 446, a formed in a few hours, and in types 316, 309, and 310, it formed in a matter of minutes at temperatures corresponding to the knee of the C-curve. Only in the bulk type 309 steel, after 500 hr, and in the bulk type 310 steel, after as short a time as 25 hr at temperature, was n detected; in both instances at approximately the same optimum temperature as in the filings. The annealing temperature affected a phase nucleation only for the filings of type 304 and 347 steels, and for the bulk samples of type 309 and 310 steels. KNOWLEDGE of both the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of the new phase is required for a complete description of metallurgical rate phenomena. However, data on the time for nucleation alone may frequently be useful in evaluating the tendency of commercial stainlcss steels to form s under various conditions. Very little correlated information of this type is available in the literature. Shortsleeve and Nicholson' indicate that s forms in ferritic 24, 27 and 30 pet Cr steels according to a C-type of reaction curve, and Emmanuel's' data for austenitic type 310 steel also suggest this type of solid state reaction. In addition, significant, though fragmentary, information has been given by Binder, Dulis and Smith,4 Payson and Savage,.; Guarneri, Miller, and Vawter,8 rerichs and Clark,7 Wilder,5 Lismer, Pryce, and Andrews,' Smith, Dulis, and Link,10 Dulis, Smith, and Houston," and Henry, Cordovi, and Fischer." The bearing of these data on this work is covered in the discussion. The purpose of this paper is to present such correlated data on s formation in AISI type 304 (18 pct Cr-8 pet Ni), 347 (18 pet Cr-10 pet Ni-Cb), 316 (18 pet Cr-12 pet Ni-2 pet Mo), 309 (25 pet Cr-12 pet Ni), 310 (25 pet Cr-20 pet Ni), and 446 (27 pet Cr) stainless steels. Materials and Test Methods X-ray diffraction and metallographic methods were used to determine the first appearance of the s phase in cold worked filings and in annealed bulk samples of seven steels, under various combinations of time and temperature. The rate of growth of the s particles was not determined. Commercial heats of six AISI steels and a low carbon laboratory experimental heat containing about 28 pet Cr were studied. Analyses are given in Table I. Because cold work greatly accelerates the nucleation of s particles, the relative rates of s nucleation in mechanically strained samples, i.e., filings through 120 mesh, were determined for direct comparison with those in annealed bulk alloys of the same composition.

THE non-ferrous 'metals industry of the Soviet Union found itself in a very low position at the beginning of the reconstruction period in 1922, due to the absence of modern smelters and the run-down condition of the existing ones. Up to. 1924 there was no great demand for newly smelted non-ferrous metals due to the considerable stocks' of copper, zinc, lead, tin and aluminum in the courtry and also to the undeveloped condition of Soviet industries. However, in 1925 it became necessary to obtain new stocks of non-ferrous metals and in that year 12,000 tons of zinc, 14,000 tons of lead and 2,000 tons of tin and aluminum were imported into the U. S. S. R.

THE use of stone as a building material in relatively large blocks is recorded in ancient historical records but only within the past 200 years has broken stone in small sizes begun to have extensive use, principally in highway construction. Tresaguet, in 1764, describing his method for highway construction in France, required the top surface to be built of stone about the size of a walnut, broken by the use of a hammer. It is said that the Romans, in the top layer of their rather massive roads, used large stones bonded together with lime mortar and bedded in small stones mixed with mortar. Much of the early macadam as built by McAdam around 1815 in England was made with hand-sledged broken stone. In 1858, the use of crushed or broken stone received a great impetus from the invention in that year by Eli Whitney Blake of what is said to be the world's first stone crusher. As a consequence of that invention, stone could be crushed to small sizes with considerable ease and, as a natural result, the use of crushed stone in macadam roads and as railroad ballast increased at a great rate. Also, as portland cement came into use, machine-produced crushed stone furnished readily available aggregate. Rapidly, other uses developed, such as for fluxstone in the production of pig iron and for other metallurgical operations and chemical utilizations. These utilizations made for the rapid growth of the crushed-stone industry and this growth is still proceeding with the growth of population and the development of new uses, notably the employment of limestone for the improvement of soils for agricultural purposes. The industries of which the production of crushed stone is a part have a tonnage second only to that of mineral fuel in the mineral industries of this country.

The range of chromium content of stainless steel is, in most cases, included in the limits 11 to 14 per cent., or the middle part of the range, 9 to 16 per cent., specified by the discoverer. For some time after the steel was produced commercially, the carbon content was about 0.3 to 0.4 per cent. and occasionally higher; only rarely was material with 0.25 per cent. carbon or less produced. The reason for this is obvious from the nature of the alloys of chromium available for making such steels; as the lowest carbon content generally available was about 1 per cent., and this in conjunction with a chromium content of about 60 per cent., the production of a 12-per cent. chromium steel with less than 0.25 to 0.30 per cent. carbon was impossible. The advent, on a reasonable commercial scale, of carbonless ferrochromium has modified this condition, however, so that for the last three years stainless material containing 0.1 per cent. or less carbon and the normal amount of chromium has been on the market. As far as the author is aware, the material was first made on a commercial scale by the firm with which he is associated in June, 1920, when a 5- or 6-ton cast of material containing 0.07 per cent. carbon and 11.7 per cent. chromium was made and cast into 12-in. ingots. The necessity for using a totally different raw material, carbonless ferrochromium, instead of the ordinary low-carbon ferro (0.6 to 1.0 per cent. carbon) has led to the idea that stainless iron is a quite distinct product and quite different from stainless steel. While this may be true from a commercial aspect, it is wrong metallurgically. The name stainless iron is unfortunate as the material is a very mild stainless steel and forms the lowest carbon member of a series of steels of continuously varying content which are, in many respccts, the counterpart of the series of ordinary carbon steels ranging from "dead soft" to tool steels. In an article on stainless steel in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, November, 1920, the author said "Just as in the far-off days 'steel' was regarded as a hard product of iron, and little or no attempt was made to grade it into harder or softer varieties, so at present stainless

The advent, on a reasonable commercial scale, of carbonless ferrochromium has modified this condition, however, so that for the last three years stainless material containing 0.1 per cent. or less carbon and the normal amount of chromium has been on the market. As far as the author is aware, the material was first made on a commercial scale by the firm with which he is associated in June, 1920, when a 5- or 6-ton cast of material containing 0.07 per cent. carbon and 11.7 per cent. chromium was made and cast into 12-in. ingots. The necessity for using a totally different raw material, carbonless ferrochromium, instead of the ordinary low-carbon ferro (0.6 to 1.0 per cent. carbon) has led to the idea that stainless iron is a quite distinct product and quite different from stainless steel. While this may be true from a commercial aspect, it is wrong metallurgically. The name stainless iron is unfortunate as the material is a very mild stainless steel and forms the lowest carbon member of a series of steels of continuously varying content which are, in many respccts, the counterpart of the series of ordinary carbon steels ranging from "dead soft" to tool steels. Discovery of scandium in the Vitro solvent extraction plant for uranium led to commercial recovery of the byproduct. Micro amounts of scandium were extracted with uranium by dodecyl phosphoric acid, but failed to follow ura-niuminto the hydrochloric acid strip solution and were eventually concentrated in the organic extractant. A fluoride strip system was developed to recover scandium from the solvent in concentrated form. High purity scandium oxide was then prepared in multi-pound lots by chemical separation techniques. The plant recovery operation, final product purification, and analytical procedures are described. Scandium is a pseudo-rare earth which is truly rare and expensive. It has special properties which may make it desirable even at the present price of $2750 per lb. Recently the price was lowered from $5000 per Ib which had prevailed since 1952, and it is anticipated that usage will be stimulated because of the lowered price. This metallic element is distributed widely in trace amounts in the rocks of the earth's crust. In addition to micro-amounts found in most uranium ores, concentrations of 50 to 100 ppm have been found in Colorado ferberite ore, lateritic nickel ore, heavy sandstone from Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico, and various zircon sands and monazites from the western part of the U. S. Scandium has been found as an essential constituent of very few minerals, the most important being thortveitite, a scandium silicate. At the present time, this mineral commands a price more than twice that of gold. Chemically, scandium is in group 3A of the periodic table. It is closely associated with yttrium and the rare earths which it strongly resembles in its reactions. It has a valence of three and will form an insoluble hydroxide, fluoride, or oxalate under proper conditions, similar to the rare earths. Eight years before its discovery, scandium was predicted by Mendeleef who ascribed his eka-boron with properties nearly identical to the actual properties of scandium. Its position as the element with Atomic No. 21 and Atomic Weight 44.96 places it between calcium and titanium in Period 4 of the chart. The successful commercial application of scandium must depend on unique properties to justify use of this high cost substance. Greater consumption would allow additional price reductions, but scan- dium will remain a relatively high-priced commodity because of its inherent scarcity. Research reportedly has been oriented toward use of scandium as an agent to achieve high-temperature, low-density alloys with magnesium and tantalum.' Also, the U.S. Air Force sponsored a project for production of research amounts of pure scandium metal.' The oxide has been used experimentally in electronics, ceramics, and metallurgy. The various aspects of scandium are well covered in recent publications.s-5 CONCENTRATE RECOVERY Small amounts of scandium exist in uranium ores and are dissolved during an acid leach yielding up to 0.001 gpl Sc2O9. When Vitro converted their uranium plant from phosphate precipitation to solvent extraction: scandium was found to follow the uranium into the dodecyl phosphoric acid solvent (DDPA). However, scandium did not strip with uranium from the DDPA in hydrochloric acid, but remained in the solvent. Therefore, a concentration of scandium built up in the organic phase. Residues from the solvent were spectrographed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and found to contain scandium. As a result of this discovery, provisions were made in the plant for recovery of scandium-bearing concentrates. Solvent extraction of uranium was added to a conventional acid leach process in a typical installation? The ore was crushed and ground, and then leached with dilute sulfuric acid. Addition of an oxidant such as sodium chlorate insured conversion of uranium minerals to a soluble form. At this point, the slurry was chemically reduced by a sulfide, such as sodium hydrosulfide, to remove substances such as ferric iron and molybdenum which were partially extracted by the solvent. The solids-liquid separation was accomplished by a four-stage counter cur rent decantation (CCD) thickener circuit. HENRY FAY (communication to the Secretary*).-In reply to the discussion of my paper, I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Chairman and the various gentlemen who have taken part. I regret that others have not offered criticism, for honest differences of opinion often lead to the truth, and suggest new lines of work. An experiment has been made which bears on Prof. Sauveur's discussion and which helps to emphasize the conclusion that cementation is not a factor in the hardening of: the surface. Dr. Langenberg, of the Watertown Arsenal, has heated for me, in vacuo at 1,000° C., a piece of the metal containing a hard surface. The microstructure shows uniform distribution of carbon throughout the metal, showing that no carbon has been added to .the surface and heating in vacuo has prevented any oxidation of the surface.
