Tuns truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed' in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge county, in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to pre¬sent them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series-'of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. "In the spring of 1927, six members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers met for dinner at the Chemists' Club in New York to discuss the possibility of setting up a committee within the Institute to further the current interest in the science of steelmaking. Attention' to this subject had been crystallized by a symposium held by the Faraday Society in 1925. ' After a prolonged discussion, ranging from thermodynamics to slag conditioning, it was decided to approach the Institute with the request that a standing committee on "The Physical Chemistry of Steel Making" be set up. This committee proposed to promote scientific and practical papers on the subject, and was designed to cooperate with the Open Hearth Committee of the Institute in bringing scientific developments to the attention of open-hearth operators throughout the country... . "As the life of the [Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking] Committee lengthened and general interest in the technical phases of steelmaking grew, it became evident that there was a distinct need for a book that might serve the open-hearth interests to better advantage than standard texts whose scope is necessarily wide and whose detailed exposition of the open-hearth process is, therefore, somewhat limited. With this thought in mind, the Committee, after some years of consideration and debate, embarked on the venture of writing a manuscript on `Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking'." The foregoing paragraphs, taken from the introduction by C. H. Herty, Jr. to the first edition, well describe the circumstances which led to the publication of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking" in the spring of 1944. The book consisted of nineteen chapters contributed by twenty-three authors and edited by the staff of Alloys of Iron Research and T. S. Washburn, B. M. Larsen, and J. S. Marsh with Frank T. Sisco as consulting editor. The Engineering Foundation and the Open Hearth Steel Committee of the Iron and Steel Division, AIME, made financial grants; steel companies and other organizations supported the publication by contributing time and expenses of staff members in their capacity as authors or editors. AS A whole, engineering schools have not awakened A to the fact that the workmen compensation laws passed in most of our states between 1914 and 1917 effected a quiet but none the less real revolution in. the relations between labor and management; no longer are industrial accidents unfortunate or careless happenings over which we feel a humanitarian interest and sorrow, they are a cost of the process and the finished product, as vital as improved design and increased efficiency. Last year the writer and others made a committee report to. the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on the cost of accidents in the coal industry of Pennsylvania. Comparatively the accident record in Pennsylvania coal industry is not high, yet the direct compensation cost plus the interference with operation cost of accidents was over 5 per cent. of the total cost of producing the coal. This stands out more vividly -if you realize that about 70 per cent. of the' cost of producing the coal is for payment of labor, wages that are fixed and over which engineering efficiency and management skill have little or no direct effect. This leaves 30 per cent. of the cost chargeable .to hoisting, haulage, overhead 'and other items subject to engineering control. One sixth of this is due to cost of accidents. Surely a direct place 'for an engineering attack.

THIS paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. PIPES EXAMINED The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from ¾ in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often 100 to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is 100° to 160°F. WATER SUPPLIES The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table I are characterized by relatively low hardness, low alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. The cost of labor turnover in industry is so large as to justify the adoption of almost any means to bring about its reduction. Intensive study has shown that faulty methods of hiring and discharging men is the most important factor in labor turnover. Complete control over hiring and discharging by the foreman is a relic of outgrown industrial conditions; centralized hiring permits this work to be put on a scientific basis and also does away with many serious evils that cannot, otherwise be reached. Centralized hiring does not impair the authority of the foreman; he hires his men from the employment office and discharges them back to it, instead of from and to the street. The employment manager, being a direct representative of the employer, tends to restore the former relation of direct intercourse between employee and employer that was helpful in avoiding friction between them. Being a specialist,, he is able to bring special knowledge and skill to bear upon the task of selling employment in his concern to desirable workmen; he is also able to give the foreign workman the special attention he requires. Employment managers have been used for the past few years by a number of large organizations, a few of which are engaged in the mining and rnetallurgical industries. They have invariably reduced labor turnover, in some cases to as little as one-tenth of what it had been. So great a reduction is due in part to other changes made in the light of the data made available by scientific study of the labor problem. In my former paper on personnel work' I advocated the more general use of the employment manager in mining and metallurgical enterprises as a means of reducing labor turnover. The form of organization recommended seems not be to understood by all, and I have requested the privilege of explaining it at greater length, since it is perhaps the most important factor of all in personnel work, and has a vital influence on the cost sheet of every industrial enterprise.

The rapid increase, during the last few years, in the number and magnitude of applications of electric power-transmission to commer cial uses in this country, has been due principally to three causes: first, the ability and enterprise of those who have been identified with the progress of electrical industries, since electric illumination became an economic fact instead of a laboratory-experiment: sec ondly, the readiness of the American people to adopt new and ad vanced methods as soon as their superiority has been fairly demon strated; and thirdly, tile economy and flexibility of the apparatus employed, when properly designed and constructed, and installed under suitable conditions. Basing our judgment on the world's advance in scientific devel opments during the past century, we may reasonably conclude that in no other country would the pioneeis of electrical invention, whose names have now become household words, have received the prompt and plentiful financial support which has enabled them to inaugurate undertakings of exceptional magnitude, even in this era of tremendous monetary organizations. And, on the other hand, we have seen, in the numerous financial and engineering failures inseparable from such rapid development, the natural results of a too implicit faith in electrical omnipotence. It is not to be wondered at that conservative engineers have been slow to adopt this new and mighty agent in the solution of exten sive problems, and under circumstances where a single failure means not only a greater or less financial sacrifice, but the loss, in a greater or less degree, of professional reputation. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats; Donetskugol and Tulaugol. In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting and control, explosion suppression and control measures, and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miners' attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. It would be helpful to briefly review Soviet coal production statistics for comparison purposes with the U.S., and for the purpose of referencing some of the delegation findings mentioned in this report. For an excellent, comprehensive picture of Soviet coal production and other related fuel statistics, the reader is referred to Strishkov's, et d. report.1 Strishkov's estimates agree with the numbers given us by Coal Ministry officials except in clean coal tonnage. The figures of 604 million mt of clean coal out of a total production of 655 tons raw coal in 1972 is much higher than Strishkov's estimate of 375 million mt clean coal.

Hunt, Chicago, Ill.:—It has been my good fortune to know of this development of Mr. York's for some time, and I think he will permit me to say that this is not the first demonstration that he has made of his method for rolling difficult shapes, and which, as he has stated, had in the past been regarded as practically impossible. I have good reason to know that Mr. York has been successful on other lines, because I myself went through a period of professional disrepute for having reported favorably on his methods, which received discredit up to the time that it was practically demonstrated that his claims were true ones. Years ago Mr. York built a mill at Duluth, Minn., for the production of structural shapes, and notably of what might be called balanced beams—beams that did not have flanges of restricted width. His scheme was to produce beams with flanges so wide that they could be used in place of built-up beams. The mill, of course, went through the difficulties that such a mill would have to encounter. I mas called upon to make an examination of the property and report. These beams were rolled on a universal mill—a mill which would admit of various-sized sections without change of rolls. I was convinced that Mr. York could do it, and I so reported. Having received condemnation and ridicule for having taken that position, later on I was glad to find that Mr. John Fritz had come to the same conclusion, and had so reported. I concluded we both could rest content, while awaiting developments. Later still, as we all know, there was another difficulty that Mr. York met with—namely, that the architects or structural engineers would not accept his proposed sections. That is still a great difficulty in America. Later, the Grey mill came into successful operation in Luxemburg, producing such sections, which are being used in England and on the Continent. In 1900, when. the public first heard of "secondary enrichment," the Butte chalcocite seemed clearly supergene. Mining, through successive regions of leached capping, bonanza sulfide, and sulfide less rich, had paused at lean bottom levels which, though chalcocite-bearing, suggested the waning of copper. The deepest chalcocite, at 1500 ft., was yet too shallow to disturb the supergene hypothesis. But, with deeper mining, lean levels yielded to fat ones. Here and there they showed, within the same vein, an inverted distribution, chalcopyrite above and chalcocite below. To the miners' astonishment, they carried chal-cocite, unaffected by cross faults, on an independent course to the depth of 2500 ft. The pattern of ore distribution, hitherto revealed only in fragments, was now appearing in perspective, and, in the depth of the chalcocite, was beginning to make Butte differ from all districts where the chalcocite is indubitably supergene. The idea of hypogene origin at length came into favor; by 1913, when Sales' advocated this origin, the argument had become a powerful one. This argument rested on field evidence; but, already, there was beginning to emerge microscopic evidence not included in this argument. Especially pertinent was the proof that (1) the deep chalcocite lies in-mixed with bornite, often microscopic; (2) the deep chalcocite often replaces bornite; and (3) replacement of bornite by chalcocite is accomplished more easily than that of pyrite, enargite, or chalcopyrite. THE year 1924 was particularly notable in the petroleum industry of California as it was a period in which extensive town-lot drilling, with attendant overproduction and allied problems, virtually ceased and the industry returned to a nearly normal condition. Nearly all major field operations were conducted by large operating and marketing companies; in contrast to 1922 and 1923 field operations, when small promotion companies set the pace and forced the large companies to follow. The outstanding features of petroleum development were: 1. The three major fields of 1923, namely Huntington Beach, Long Beach, and Santa Fe Springs, declined from a production of 13,042,939 bbl., in January, to 6,764,417 bbl., in December, a drop of nearly 52 per cent: During this period, Huntington Beach declined 35 per cent., Long Beach 42 per cent., and Santa Fe Springs 63 per cent. 2. Methods of pumping deep wells were improved in some particulars; this contributed toward sustaining the productions of these three famous fields above what was predicted. 3. Of the fields producing previous to 1924, only three increased in production to any appreciable degree, during the year, as the result of bringing in new wells. These fields are Dominguez, Torrance, and Wheeler Ridge. Dominguez, discovered in September, 1923, produced 56,851 bbl. in January and increased regularly to a production of 1,641,042 bbl. in December. Torrance increased from a production of 972,261 bbl. in January, to 1,783,670 bbl., in May, and then declined to 1,393,215 bbl. in December. Wheeler Ridge, discovered in January, 1923, produced 23,254 bbl., in January, 1924, increased to a high of 33,678 bbl., in September, and declined to 27,430 bbl. in December. 4. Nearly all the production that had been shut-in during 1923 was opened in 1924, except some wells chiefly in Coalinga, Fullerton, and Santa Maria districts. The opening up of this shut-in production, combined with the increased productions from Dominguez and Torrance, were the chief factors that held the rate of decline for the state to a gentle slope.

Hematite-magnetite ore bodies at Iron Mountain, Missouri, have produced nearly 9 million tons of iron ore concentrates since 1844. The ore minerals occur principally as open-space filling in fractured and brecciated andesite porphyry with very minor replacement of the wall rocks. The enclosing rocks are Precambrian in age and consist of a series of dacite, rhyolite, and andesite flows aggregating about 2000 feet in thickness. All of the ore is in andesite and the mineralization is Precambrian in age. The shape of the ore bodies, the breccia character of the ore, and the gangue mineralogy are believed to be unique. One of the two main ore bodies is crudely dome-shaped with a tendency for development of concentric mineralized shells; the other is an elongated lense in plan but hook-shaped in cross section. Both have strong linear elements striking northeast, east-west, or northwest. Various modes of origin for the structures and for the tension breccias have been suggested, but none is completely satisfactory. Hematite is the main ore mineral; magnetite is subordinate. Important gangue minerals are andradite, quartz, calcite, actinolite, apatite, epidote, and chlorite. Although some evidence favors injection of an iron-rich melt, other evidence suggests ore formation by a high temperature, water-rich solution.

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily-mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modeling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modeling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities but requires thorough we of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions may prove more applicable to coal character delineation than mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modeling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence levels in reserve estimations.

To start, accelerate, and stop each motor vehicle demands the use of clutch and brake. Friction is applied intensively to both these mechanisms, and their linings must therefore be of materials that will resist wear and that will not ignite with the heat of friction. Asbestos, that curious fire-resisting: natural fiber that may be woven into unburnable cloth, is eminently suitable for this special' use, and no satisfactory substitute for it has yet been found Because- asbestos is regarded as absolutely essential to all types of motor transport on land, and in addition is indispensable to. many .other kinds of machines and equipment, the situation of the- United State's with respect to supplies of-raw-material-is of special interest: From the standpoint of national self-sufficiency, conditions are far, from satisfactory, for United States mines furnish only three to four percent of the total domestic require-

The Ozark Lead Company operating facilities are located in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" of southeast Missouri. Development of this wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation started in May 1964, with a six foot diameter by 1250 foot deep steel lined shaft. A 20-foot diameter, 1480 foot deep, concrete lined production shaft was collared in March 1968. Production from the facilities began that month and has reached a present average of approximately 6000 tons per day. This paper describes the fully automatic system used to hoist the lead-zinc ore from a depth of 1420 feet to the surface crushing and concentrating facilities, as well as the man and materials hoisting system which allows the lowering of large equipment into the mine. MINING Galena, sphalerite and some copper minerals are found in several mineralized zones of the relatively flat lying dolomite of the "Bonneterre formation". The mineable ore zones vary from 10 feet to 110 feet thick, from 200 feet to 1200 feet wide, and several thousands of feet on strike. Two-boom diesel-hydraulic jumbos equipped with rotary percussion drills are used for both development and production. The jumbos are used principally to open the room and pillar stopes, and a track mounted down hole drill is used to bench in areas where the ore thickness warrants. Explosives used are ANFO, dynamite, and water-jell which are detonated by electric blasting caps. Broken ore (and waste) is hauled by rubber tired transports to chuted transfer raises. Approximately every 500 feet, these raises connect the orebody to the 15 foot by 28 foot train haulage level below. Two twenty ton diesel-hydraulic locomotives haul 160 tons per trip to storage pockets which have a total storage of 1500 tons of material. From these pockets the material is fed over a 6 foot by 20 foot mechanical vibrating feeder which includes one 4 foot by 6 foot grizzly section to a 48 inch by 60 inch jaw crusher. The grizzly and crusher products are transferred horizontally 45 feet on a 48 inch conveyor belt, to one of two 750 ton storage pockets. The material can flow unimpeded into one pocket or be deflected into the second pocket by a movable rock filled hopper. LOADING POCKET The material in each storage pocket is controlled by six lengths of ship anchor chain. The upper end of the 20 foot chain is anchored behind a brow in the pocket, while the lower ends are joined by a header. The lower ends of the chains are raised by two electric powered marine barge winches using 3/4 inch cables. The crusher operator controls the raising and lowering of these chains from a console in the crusher station. The upper and lower travel of the chains is controlled by cams and limit switches on the winch drive. The winches are located within 5 feet of the shaft, and shaft water continually causes problems with the electric components. A malfunction in the upper travel switch will cause the winch to pull the chains into the cable sheave (breaking the cable or sheave), while the lower switch causes the winch to unwind too much rope. Serious consideration is being given to changing the electric motors to pneumatic, since pneumatic motors will eliminate the need of any electrics at the winches. The winches can be "bottomed out" against the sheave without damage to the cable or sheave when raising the chains, and can be allowed to "free wheel" to lower the chains. Out of nine new major iron ore concentrators put in operation during the last three years, or expected to be commissioned in 1968, seven incorporate primary grinding mills and have a total design capacity of 13,150,000 ltpy of pellets, while only two include conventional rod and ball mill grinding circuits for a total design capacity of about 6,100,000 ltpy (Table I). This evolution in the application of primary grinding to hard, fine grained magnetite ores represents an important development in the technology of mineral processing. It has been the outcome of comprehensive testwork in the laboratory and in pilot plants.

THE preceding chapter has recorded the initiation of mineral industry education during the period 1890-1910 in numerous institutions that had not previously offered it. It should also be emphasized that in many institutions where instruction had begun before 1890, as recorded in earlier chapters, but had not yet become firmly established, this period was one of marked growth and development. This was not universally true, however, for at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Washington (St. Louis), Iowa, Vanderbilt and Tennessee, and at the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, mineral industry instruction was being dropped during this period, instead of gaining in strength. It is necessary to emphasize this, because writers on the subject have not infrequently attempted to make a much too simple correlation between mineral discovery or production and the intensity of student interest in mineral industry curricula. It would naturally be true that periods of large mineral production would, in general, coincide with cycles of business prosperity, and the latter are conducive to starting new ventures, educational as well as business. It should be equally evident that opportunities for business and professional success might, in such periods, appear to increase at a more rapid rate in industries other than mineral, or in the utilization of minerals rather than in their production. The author has not been able to perceive any simple and clear relation between interest in mineral industry education and mineral discovery, production, and utilization, or general business prosperity. On the contrary, the more the problem is studied the more complex the factors involved in it appear to be. In a later chapter an attempt will be made to analyze them in more detail

ZrB2 was produced in batches of 4 to 6 Ib by interaction of ZrO2, B4C, B203, and carbon at around 2000°C in a simple graphite resistance furnace. Techniques of production are discussed and the final design of a suitable furnace is described in detail. Several other borides were made by the same technique and the process appears to have possibilities for commercial production. N seeking out new hard and refractory com- pounds, many researchers have turned to the investigation of the borides and excellent papers have been published on the properties of these compounds. Few papers, however, have appeared on the techniques and problems concerned with the production of these high temperature substances. This report describes progress made in developing a method for preparing zirconium diboride, ZrB2, on a pilot plant scale. The literature of the borides and other refractory hard metals recently has been reviewed, annotated, and classified so completely' that it is needless to attempt such an outline here. It is enough to say that three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB, ZrB2, and ZrB12.2 ZrB2 is the most stable of these and is especially stable in the presence of carbon up to and including its melting point of around 3000°C. Like most borides, it can be prepared in several ways. It can be prepared by synthesis of the elements, but these are expensive and difficult to produce in a high state of purity. Obviously, production directly from the oxides would have decided economic advantages. In electrolytic production such as that of calcium boride,:' the product is recovered as a sludge mixed with electrolyte; and separation of product from adhering electrolyte and regeneration of the electrolyte is an involved and difficult process. The work on borides was started on a small scale in 1948. Late in 1949, Naval Ordnance expressed a specific interest in ZrB2 and the project then centered on this compound. After the usual experimental work necessary in a new field, ZrB2 of good quality was produced by heating mixtures of B4C, ZrO2, B2O3, and carbon to a temperature of about 2000 °C in a resistance-type electric furnace. Over 100 lb was made for experimental use tests, and the method of production probably could be expanded into a commercial operation. A similar process has been described by Kieffer and coworkers.' The main chemical problems were the development of proper charges to insure complete reduction of the elements, determination of the proper temperature range at which these reductions took place, and adoption of techniques necessary to pre- vent inclusion of such impurities as carbon and nitrides. The mechanical problems consisted of developing a simple practical furnace that would attain the high temperatures required and permit use of a controlled atmosphere when necessary and determining of suitable refractories. Both problems were solved by designing a crucible resistance furnace. Crucible Resistance Electric Furnace Attempts were first made to produce ZrB2 in an electric arc furnace, but such a furnace would not provide the degree of carbon control required for producing clean graphite-free borides, so it was decided to try working in a crucible. Obviously, the furnace would have to be constructed of graphite, as the temperatures required are too high for other refractories or heating elements. Crucibles were made by hollowing out segments of graphite electrodes, which were fitted with a cover and clamped between two electrodes so that the current passing through the thin wall of the crucible would generate heat, using the principle of the Helberger crucible furnace."? Preliminary tests with this type of furnace were encouraging and led to the furnace design shown in Fig. 1. The essential components were a thin-walled graphite crucible resting on a graphite block, which formed the lower electrode assembly, and a top electrode assembly swung from a pipe column making contact with the top of the crucible. The space around the crucible was filled with graphite prepared from waste electrodes crushed to about ¼ in. This packing had excellent insulating properties, both electrically and thermally, and could be removed easily and quickly from around the crucible by means of an industrial vacuum cleaner. The largest resistor crucibles were machined from 8 in. electrode stock and were 26 in. long, with a side wall Yi in. thick and a 1 in. bottom. Temperatures were determined optically by sighting down a 1 in. hole drilled longitudinally through the top electrode and the crucible cover. Sealing this hole at the top was a water-cooled brass sight-glass assembly, shown in Fig. 2. An opening was provided for a light flow of helium to keep the sight opening clear of smoke, and a glass prism above the sight glass changed the line of sight to the horizontal for easier reading. More recently, the prism and optical pyrometer were replaced by a photoelectric recording pyrometer. At first the charges were placed directly in the resistor crucible but this meant that everything had to be withdrawn from the furnace every time the charge was emptied. Later, smaller crucibles were made up that could be placed inside the resistor

Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has averaged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by persons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. In the case of serious accidents, however, the greatest cause is falls of ground, followed, in turn, by ore transportation, persons falling, explosives, and asphyxiation. Accident Prevention The improvement of the safety record was obtained by a combination of many factors. In surveying the results at Andes for the past twelve years, it is possible to select some features of the present operation which have contributed to the accident record. The most important of these are: (1) good staff planning, (2) good equipment, (3) an alert safety organization, and (4) education and selection of the workmen. GOOD STAFF PLANNING As a result of good staff planning, the mine has good working conditions, namely, good ventilation, moderate temperatures and humidity, and good lighting. These factors not only reduce accidents but also improve efficiency. In haulage work, accidents have been reduced by having traffic move in a forward direction only. The latter makes possible a one-man train crew. Trains are centrally dispatched from loading drifts which are interconnected by signal lights, so that when a train in a lateral drift is given permission to move into a main line drift, a red light signals in all other lateral drifts in that area. Good track is maintained, and safety niches are required at all switch throws. Since safety niches were provided there have been no fatal or serious accidents at such points. All main line haulage drifts are illuminated by electric lights. Haulage drifts are kept clean. Adequate clearance has been provided between cars and between cars and the sides of the haulage drifts. The 4 1/2 ton Cranby type cars are equipped with roller bearings, and the 10 ton loconlotives with trolley shoes instead of wheels. These two features are responsible for improved ore haulage conditions and contribute to greater efficiency and safety.
