IN 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KC1) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H20). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY OF DEPOSITS The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado Rivera distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 2o E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 2o E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. THE new low-alloy high-strength steels are obviously here to stay. With 75 per cent higher yield strength and 50 per cent higher tensile strength than plain carbon structural steel, they permit 20 to 40 per cent weight savings and 10 per cent or more increase in pay load in the con-struction of railroad cars, buses, trucks, and a great variety of material-handling equipment. Their cost is low enough so that the extra cost of the new lighter construction over that with carbon steel offers an attrac-tive self-liquidating investment; in some instances new construction with these low-alloy steels may even be as cheap as with plain carbon steel. A considerable and rapidly growing demand for the low-alloy steels has already sprung up. The many steel compositions that have appeared on the market lately 18,27,28,29,30 to meet this demand would seem to indicate that no single composition is uniquely fitted for the purpose. However, no doubt some compositions are more suitable than others. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to compare the effects of the various alloying elements that might be used in the low-alloy steels in order to choose the metallurgically most logical composition, paying due regard, of course, to the economic aspects involved.

INASMUCH as galena and sphalerite flotation concentrates are being produced that contain over 95 per cent galena or sphalerite, it is not unreasonable to believe that a flotation concentrate assaying at least 80 per cent of native gold can he secured provided the gold is free. As yet, little if any fundamental information has been published concerning the flotation of free gold either alone or in the presence of sulfides. So far, we are unable to make as complete a separation of gold from sulfide minerals by flotation as is possible in, the separation of one sulfide from another by this method. An introductory study of the flotation of several free gold ores has been made in our Utah laboratories. For this study three general types of gold ores were chosen, namely: (1) Quartzite containing 0.26 oz. gold per ton in which no base metals are present; (2) sulfide ore (2.04 oz. Au; 1.31 oz. AO containing pyrite as the only sulfide present and the gold free; and (3) oxidized ore (1.10 oz. Au; 0.70 oz. Ag) from an oxidized zone of the vein from which sulfide ore (No. 2) was taken; little sulfide iron was present.

(written discussion *).-The Chilean mill has generally been considered a fine-crushing machine and as such has had many advocates; it has also. had quite a number of denouncers; hence, the action of the Portland engineers in using the Chilean mill for the preparatory work usually accomplished in, rolls or rock breakers and adding a ball mill to do the fine grinding is novel, though of doubtful utility in the long run, even though a fair efficiency is obtained for the combination machines, as measured by Chilean mill practice. In order to follow the development of Chilean mill practice on Cripple Creek ores, I might say that two 6-ft., Chilean mills were placed in operation in Stratton's Independence mill in April, 1908, treating ore crushed by rolls to pass Y4 in. screen aperture. Screening was, however, found to be an unnecessary refinement, as was also the use of plows in the mills; both screening and plowing were abandoned before the Portland engineers finished the experiments in stamp milling upon which they were then engaged. Two additional 6-ft. Chilean mills were added in the spring of 1911, three of them giving the required 10,000 tons per month capacity, one being always in reserve. The Portland company began using Chilean mills in June, 1910, at its Victor mill, and the same company purchased the Stratton's Independence mill in June, 1915, and remodeled it; it is now known as the Independence mill. A description of Stratton's Independence milling practice, is given in the November, 191.1, issue of Mining Majazine (London). These Chilean mills were used as fine grinders and that they accomplished their purpose is shown by the screen analyses, in which 62 per cent. of the pulp passed 150-mesh screens. To make coarse crushers of these Chilean mills, the Portland engineers have increased the speed, substituted steel in various parts for cast iron, provided new and enlarged thrust bearings to take care of the centrifugal force incident to higher speed, and have, thereby, greatly increased the cost of the machines. They have also reduced the width of the tires and dies from 8 in., as used in the original mill, to 7 in., a reduction of 12 ½ per cent. in the crushing surfaces, to say nothing of the loss of abrasion or attrition incident to the larger surface. At the same time, they have apparently increased the weight of the rollers by using tires 5 7/8 in. thick as against tires varying between 3 and 4 in. on the original mills, thereby increasing

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.

In the case of plastic deformation by slip, von Mises&apos; showed that an arbitrary shape change of a crystal generally requires the activation of five independent slip systems. The selection of the five active systems was worked out by Taylor ,&apos; who hypothesized that, among all combinations of equivalent slip systems which are capable of accommodating a given imposed strain, the active combination is that one for which the sum of the absolute values of the glide shears is a minimum. Taylor analyzed the case of {lll}( 110) slip for fcc metals and applied the analysis to crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, which approximates the shape change of an embedded grain in a polycrystalline aggregate deformed in tension (or compression). For the twelve equivalent (111) (110) slip systems, there are 384 independent combinations of five slip systems that satisfy the imposed strain.&apos; Taylor laboriously calculated the value of M = ZjIyj /E for each combination (although some were missed) and obtained the minimum M, hence the active combination, for a number of axial orientations distributed throughout the stereographic triangle. (yj is shear from slip on the th system and e is the tensile strain). Detailed contours of constant minimum M were recently obtained by Hosford and Backofen using a simplified but equivalent Bishop and ill&apos; analysis. Due to the numerous combinations of slip systems involved in the calculations, however, the full potential of the powerful Taylor analysis has not been exploited. For this reason, we have recently utilized techniques of linear programming to obtain solutions of the Taylor analysis for axisymmetric flow, for slip on {110)(< 111), {112)(111), and {123)(111) systems as well as mixed slip composed of these three systems. These slip modes are of obvious importance in the deformation of bcc crystals. Some of the salient results are summarized below. 1) Stress-Strain Data for Polycrystal. The value of M averaged over all axial orientations is the ratio of the tensile flow strength of a randomly oriented aggregate to the critical resolved shear stress for slip. This value enters importantly in theoretical deductions of the polycrystalline stress-strain curve from single-crystal data.2&apos;3&apos;5 Table I lists the values of Ma,, for the several cases of slip, as obtained by the present computer work. 2) Texture Hardening. Since the value of M depends on the axial orientation, the (tensile) flow strength of a specimen may be increased through texture control.&apos; An example of the computer results is shown in Fig. 1, where contours of minimum M have been computer-plotted for the case of mixed slip on {110}(111), {112)(111),and {123}(11 1) systems. It may be seen that, under axisymmetric flow, wires of (111) and (110) axial orientations are 50 pct stronger than those oriented at (100) .

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stability. Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe. Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke. The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry.

The Marquette District of Central Northern Michigan is the oldest of the Lake Superior iron districts with a mining history dating from 1852 up to the present. The total production of all types of ore through 1965 was 338,120, 146 long tons. Emphasis up to the 1950's was on mining the direct shipping ores; however, demands for higher-grade and better-structured ores in the last decade has resulted in a complete shift in emphasis to beneficiating the lowgrade Negaunee Iron-formation to produce high-grade iron ore pellets. The Precambrian sediments of the Marquette Range have been correlated with the Animikie Series of the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, and are contained in a westward plunging synclinorium that is approximately 3 3 miles in length and 3 to 6 miles in width. -The rock unit of major economic importance is the Negaunee Iron-formation that reaches a thickness of 2500 feet near the City of Negaunee. The primary iron content of the Negaunee Iron-formation averages 26 per cent, whereas the altered iron-formation approximates 31 per cent. The Negaunee Iron-formation has been divided into three principal types: diagenetic, oxidized, and metamorphic. The ores produced to date fall into four categories: high-grade soft ores, high-grade hard ores, siliceous ores, and concentrates and agglomerates (pellets). The soft ores generally are found in synclines and in fault-trough structures, bounded by mafic dikes along at least one side, and are mainly found in the basal portion of the Negaunee. In contrast, the hard ores occur in the uppermost portion of the Negaunee and are controlled by structural features such as folds, faults, and dikes. Iron-formation that has undergone diagenetic and metamorphic alteration makes up the main beneficiating ore types. Studies on the Negaunee Iron-formation have played an important role in the formulation of many of the theories on the origin of the Precambrian iron-formations.

Oil and gas development in Louisiana during 1935 brought this state at the close of the year up to fourth place in the nation as a producing area. A review of development in North Louisiana centers around Rodessa, the most important reserve discovered in this area in many years. While the producing limits have not been defined, this discovery is one of the major developments of the year. New gas fields were discovered in Lincoln, De Soto and Bossier parishes. The Lincoln Parish discovery, completed flowing a highly saturated gas from the Glen Rose, further indicates the importance of deep-seated prospects in the interior salt-dome area. Minor extensions were made at Sligo and Pine Island. During the year, 126 oil wells and 103 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells during 1934. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,617,405 bbl. as com-pared with 9,274,050 bbl. during 1934, an increase of 343,355 bbl., while the gas production increased 18 billion cu. ft. in 1935 over its 1934 figure. The Louisiana Department of Conservation gage of Nov. 1, 1935, shows an open-flow capacity of 4,563,725,000 cu. ft. per day from 941 wells in the Monroe field and 682,770,000 cu. ft. from 159 wells in the Rich-land field. A great deal of leasing continues in North Louisiana as a result of the Lincoln Parish discovery and development in the Rodessa field, especially in Bossier, De Soto, Winn, Lincoln, Bienville, Webster, Ouachita and Richland parishes. South Louisiana&apos;s position as an area of important reserves was further proved during the past year. Increased drilling resulted in the discovery of seven new fields: Lafitte, Garden Island Bay, Tepetate, Bunkie, St. Martinsville, Jeanerette and Big Lake. New sands or producing horizons proved productive in 15 of the proven fields. The total oil production for South Louisiana during 1935 was 40,731,-056 bbl. as compared with 23,255,437 bbl. during 1934. The last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior irou-ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world&apos;s consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 it was already 60,000,000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-cousumption mill continue at the same rapid rate, especially with the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is, therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent iuvestigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-gratle ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

DURING 1943, supplies of lead, like those of most base metals, moved from a position of scarcity to one of ample supply for all possible war requirements. The principal worry in the market, as 1944 began, was that surplus stocks might increase too rapidly to maintain price stability. The problem of postwar stockpiling had definitely entered the picture. The end of the year finds the lead industry having met all use demands, but not without depleting stocks to a critical low in spite of heavy importations. The principal reason for this dangerously reduced stock position is lack of adequate man power, which, without question, has become the lead industry&apos;s number one problem. This condition became obvious about the middle of the year, after Selective Service placed in effect orders that no deferments would be given employees under 26 years of age, and to a complacent attitude toward the industry assumed by the War Manpower Commission. It has become progressively worse since then. The WPB continued its policy, started during 1943, of easing restrictions on materials to be used for maintenance, repairs, and operating supplies. The policy of premium payments established by the Metals Reserve Co. was continued and, in spite of expressions to the contrary, has proved quite satisfactory. Development and production from open cut mines continued its vigorous growth trend during the year 1968. Material handling and transportation were again exposed to the use of larger equipment with shovels, trucks and front end loaders leading the way. Highlights of World Mining Activities Africa: The Anglo American Corp. opened a new high-grade copper mine in Zambia during the year. In Angola, the Companhia Minera do Lobita planned a 3 million ton iron ore production for 1968 from new mines which will ultimately produce 5 million tons per year. A feasibility study of Bethlehem Steel Co., for the development of large high- grade iron ore reserves in Gabon, was in final stages of completion this year and Pickands Mather and Co. continued its investigation of iron ore deposits along the Ivory Coast.

ALEXANDER BRYDEN Alexander Bryden, clean of engineers in the anthracite mining field, and a member of the pioneer Pittston family, was claimed by death Wednesday, September 26, 1917. The announcement was not a surprise, as he had been in a critical condition for several days. Mr. Bryden had been in failing health for a year past, but his indomitable will kept him at his accustomed duties until quite recently. Two weeks before his death he attended the regular weekly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Miners&apos; Savings Bank in Pittston, Pa. At that time he apparently felt that his end was fast approaching, as he bade farewell to his associates on the bank board. Until a few days before the end, he continued to give attention to business matters at his home, in preparation for the end, which he met unflinchingly. In the passing of Mr. Bryden, northeastern Pennsylvania loses one of the best-known mining engineers, and the community, a man who, throughout his long life, was actively interested in its social welfare and business prosperity. He was for many years prominent in the management of the mining operations of the Pennsylvania Coal Co., and at the time of his death held the position of consulting engineer of the Pennsylvania and Hillside Coal.
