The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

Gentlemen and guests of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: This is the thirty-second regular meeting of our Institute, and rather than try to make some extemporaneous remarks, I thought it best to write them out, so I could in that way give them to you, and probably give you a new thought for the future conduct of our Institute. The thirty-first regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was held in Salt Lake City, June 22, 23, and 24, 1932, and due to rapidly changing conditions in the coal industry, subsequent meetings have been postponed from time to time, as many of our members and our Secretary have been tied up with code and labor matters. Since our last meeting, at which was discussed problems of vital interest to all of us, especially the production and marketing of coal safely and economically, and the stabilization of our industry, which has already suffered two years of deplorable conditions, almost two more years have been added to the record, but during the past six months miracles have happened, and an industry which formerly was unable to govern itself, has now, through the aid of our Government, at least learned how to make a proper start in that direction. Whether we like it or not, and whether or not the things being done are in agreement with our various political beliefs, without doubt, we are in a much better position today than prior to this transformation. However, it is a pleasure to all of us to note that safety has not been lost sight of in the interim, and without doubt, as later papers and statistics will substantiate, the period since our last regular meeting has probably shown the most remarkable safety achievement of any period in recent history.

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. "The Mount Polley copper/gold project is located in central British Columbia and is currently being developed by Imperial Metals Corporation. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was required to develop acceptable metallurgy for recovery of both sulphide and oxide copper-gold mineralization. Copper recovery is highly sensitive to oxide copper content of the feed whereas gold is primarily associated with the copper sulphide minerals. A conventional flowsheet where sulphide flotation is followed by sulphidization and oxide scavenging is described. The conventional flowsheet was used in a feasibility study which resulted in a favourable production decision at Mount Polley. Detailed engineering and permitting are in progress.More recently, laboratory and pilot testing of a new flotation reagent, S-6493*, an oxide specific collector, has indicated that improved copper recovery can be accomplished with reduced reagent consumption, including elimination of the sulphidization step, using S-6493 compared with the conventional flowsheet. The comparative metallurgical results using S-6493 and conventional sulphidization methods are presented, from both bench scale and pilot testing. Comparative economics of the conventional flowsheet and that using S-6493 are also presented. Advantages of S-6493 include reduced reagent costs, increased revenues from additional copper recovery, and overall reduction in capital and plant operating costs due to the simplified flowsheet. INTRODUCDONThe Mount Polley copper/gold property is located in Central British Columbia, 56 air kilometres northeast of Williams Lake. The first recorded exploration was in 1964. By 1989, a total of 238 diamond drill holes, totalling 27, 522 meters, was completed to detail reserves on the Mount Polley prospect. A number of drill core composites were submitted, containing a variety of oxide copper levels, for metallurgical flowsheet development. Six bulk samples were collected from surface trenches for additional bench scale testing and for pilot plant testing."

"Process Safety Management for METTOP means avoiding risks as far as possible - but also dealing with the residual risk by using all existing management tools or external assistance, if required. The presented paper has two parts. The first one introduces a new and very safe cooling technology for metallurgical furnaces. The second part shows how to deal with the residual risk as well as minimize it by using the tapping area of an electric arc furnace as an example.Today more and more intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetime, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operation. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosion.To overcome the disadvantages of water, a new cooling technology using an alternative cooling medium, namely ISIS B (a special kind of ionic liquid) was developed. The main advantage of ISIS B is the fact that no explosion occurs when this liquid comes in contact with molten metal. The working temperature range of ISIS B of 50 to 200 °C results in other advantages as there are no corrosion problems and no risks of hydration.The fact that no explosion occurs when ISIS B contacts molten metal leads to a revolutionary solution for the metallurgical industry in terms of safety. Especially in critical areas - like tap-holes - new safety standards can be achieved.Together with the TÜV Austrian Holding AG a risk analysis was done for a water cooled tap-hole as well as for a tap-hole cooled with ionic liquids. It is shown that using the new technology the risk can be decreased dramatically and the importance of a best available technology is described."

Characteristics of metal/non metal mines were evaluated to determine the suitability of applying the U.S. Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location system to the problem of locating trapped mines in metal/non metal mines. Statistical distributions of mine depths and overburden conductivities show that the existing USBM EM system is inadequate for most metal/non metal mines. Alternate approaches to trapped miner location in deep mines were identified and subsequent field tests were conducted at six (6) mines to evaluate their feasibility. The approach considered to be the most promising is one which utilizes the existing manpack transmitting system, modified slightly for a dual frequency output, in conjunction with a sophisticated signal processing receiver on the surface. The main advantage of staying with a "through the earth" approach is that the underground equipment can be kept simple, easily maintained, light-weight and inexpensive.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. The quality of the P.F. should not vary greatly with output rates which may be anywhere between the maximum rate and one quarter ofthe maximum. The suspension of P.F. in the primary air...

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

Mathematical simulation of reservoir behavior may be used to help understand reservoir processes and to predict reservoir behavior, thereby leading to the most economically desirable form of exploitation. In addition, simulation can be used as a tool for reservoir description to learn more about the physical nature of the reservoir and the mode of primary recovery. This use is essential in most reservoir studies and represents one of the more significant applications of simulation. Prediction of reservoir behavior provides information concerning displacement efficiency, optimum well locations, and the comparison of alternative producing processes. Since oil, water and gas all commonly occur in many reservoirs, a simulation that takes into account the simultaneous flow of three immiscible phases is a prerequisite for obtaining such information. Furthermore, a simulation that describes this flow in two dimensions provides the capability of evaluating combination gas- and water-drive reservoirs with either an areal or a cross-sectional description. Many reservoir problems require such a simulation. The objective of the research described here was to develop a mathematical model and associated computer program for accurate, efficient, and economical prediction of the reservoir flow of three phases in two-dimensional geometry. Several authors have discussed multidimensional reservoir simulation of two phases.l-3 Gottfried et al.' presented an analy- sis of three-phase simulation in one dimension. Fagin and Stewart" and Garrett6 have discussed the simulation of three-phase flow in two dimensions, but their solution techniques were different from the method discussed in this paper. In particular, previous models and computer programs have usually involved either fewer capabilities or inefficient and less rigorous descriptions resulting in limited applicability. In the following sections, we present a description of the model, an evaluation of the method, and the application to reservoir problems. Additional and supporting material is presented in the Appendix. The Three-Phase Model General Description The three-phase model consists of the mathematical description of the flow of oil, water and gas in a reservoir. Conceptually this description considers flow in all three space dimensions, but in the subject simulator it is assumed that no flow occurs in the third dimension. The model includes the effects on reservoir behavior of fluid and rock compressibility, viscosity, gravity, capillary pressure, relative permeability and gas solubility. Within the two-dimensional restriction, the reservoir considered may be completely heterogeneous and anisotropic. The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

"The general location of the Kentucky, Fluorspar District and the Moore Hill fault area are shown in figure 1. An engineer3/ the Bureau of Mines visited the district in July 1942 and reported on the Moore Hill fault system. Subsequently the Bureau explored the Summers, Pepperbox, McCune, Eagle-Watson, Henry Watson, Davenport, Felix Tyner, and Eagle-Wring prop¬erties by core drilling. These properties and the principal faults are shown on figures 2 and 3.Collaboration of the Federal Geological Survey4/ was of great benefit, particularly in mapping the properties, determining the stratigraphy, and furnishing information on that and other geologic factors.Fluorite was noted as early as 1818 near Shawneetown in southern Illinois.5/ In 1835 an attempt was made to work deposit in Crittenden County, Kentucky, but interest centered chiefly upon the galena found with the fluorite. The first shipments of fluorspar from Kentucky wore made in 1373 from the Yandell mine of Crittendon County.6/ It is not known when the first work on the Moore Hill fault was done, but it seems probable that the Cullen-Eagle and Nancy Hanks were being ,worked in 1900. Gravel spar was found on the surface at the Two Brothers mine in 1904,7/ and the main shaft was started in 1914; work also began at .the Davenport in 1914, and in 1917 the Eagle-Watson was in production. A shaft was gunk on the Pepperbox in 1918, and in 1922 fluorspar was found and work was started on the Summers property. In 1924 work began at the McCune, Felix Tyner, Eagle-Wring, and probably the Hicks properties.No Good approximate record of production from each property on the Moore Hill fault system is obtainable, but an estimate based upon all data available is as follows:"

Physical and chemical characterization and solid/liquid separation of turbid waters from a river affected by an iron tailing rupture disaster (Gualaxo do Norte River, Brazil) were studied at bench scale. Parameters such as turbidity, pH, surface tension, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), particle size distribution (micro- and nanoparticles), and zeta potential were analyzed from samples collected at three different river depths. The results in all samples showed the presence of micro- and nanoparticles, ranging in diameters from 100 nm to 200 μm. Best results for flocculation and settling were obtained at pH 7.5, through an innovative combination of eco-friendly reagents: (i) ferric hydroxide precipitates (10 mg L−1 Fe3+) to sweep (enmesh) the dispersed solids and (ii) gelatinized starch (5 mg L−1 ) to form large flocs. The results showed removals between 90 and 100% of total suspended solids (micro- and nanoparticles), resulting in clear water with residual turbidity < 7 NTU. It is believed that this innovative alternative has a high potential for flocculating and treating the turbid water at Gualaxo do Norte River, assisting the water treatment stations.

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on the importance of maximizing gold recovery. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes."

The present study &apos;of pure ZnS and NiS and ZnS (marmatite) by detailed electrokinetic methods has shown that by careful control of experimental parameters much new&apos; information on sulphide-water interfaces can be obtained. Time-dependent processes of alteration of sulphide surfaces are foHowed by electrokinetic methods and indicate that the isoelectric point of the surface depends on elemental sulphur coverage, oxidation product coverage, and the conditions which promote or minimize such reaotions in the presence and absence of activator.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. Most underground mines rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. The design and operation of ore pass systems often rely on past experience, which is often anecdotal and at times contradictory in nature. This paper summarizes the current practice in Quebec underground metaliferous mines. The information was collected during a series of site visits in ten underground mines. The database includes information on ore pass configuration, support, materials transited, and overall ore pass performance.

The realisation of most of the civil engineering works is subordinate to the execution of consolidation works, in order to improve the soil physical-mechanics characteristics. The works classifiable with the term "Soil Improvement" can be realised using several technologies, among which the Deep Mixing Method is distinguished for his remarkable flexibility and productivity characteristics. The Deep Mixing Method is a process whereby a rotary drilling machine mechanically drills a constant diameter hole while cement slurry is injected into the soil at high pressure. The process combines state of the art construction techniques merging mechanical and hydraulic mixing energies at the tool bit. The result is a soil-cement column of engineered strength, consistency and dimension. Whereby the soil cement column formation process is controlled by a computerised device, the result is a speedy installation, thorough mixing, and a high degree of control, repeatability and documentation.
