For the realisation of the underground railway line RandstadRail in the city area of Rotterdam a bored tunnel is under construction. Diaphragm walls up to a depth of about 40 m were used to construct the building pits for the start shaft, the Blijdorp Station and the end shaft. The water tightness of the diaphragm walls was determined by leakage tests that were executed after the construction of the walls, but prior to the excavation of the building pits. The tests showed satisfactory results with a hydraulic resistance of the diaphragm walls of at least 500 days. To determine the water tightness of diaphragm walls it is recommended to follow the specific procedure as described in this paper.

The Corridor Sands deposits of heavy mineral sands represent the largest known economic resource of titanium dioxide minerals. The West Block of Deposit 1 alone contains Measured and Indicated Mineral Resources of 1.7 billion tonnes containing 4.14 per cent ilmenite, estimated in accordance with the JORC standard, sufficient for at least the first 20 years of mining. Total mineral resources are estimated to be approximately 17 billion tonnes at 5 per cent Total Heavy Minerals (THM). Test work was undertaken on the West Block of Deposit 1 over a period of two years in order to develop the process flow sheet to bankable standards. Geological, mineralogical and metallurgical test work was integrated from a pre-feasibility stage to the full bankable stage. The process flowsheet was developed with the central objective of the production of saleable products, of consistent quality and acceptable to the respective end-markets. The aim of this paper is to describe the way in which the various challenges for the project have been addressed by using integrated geological and mineralogical information, which has resulted in the development of a complete flow sheet. The process confirmed that material within customer specifications could be produced, once various metallurgical parameters were understood. This flow sheet development progressed from laboratory test work through to full field trials at pilot plant scale on large consignments of mineralized material. The flow sheet was developed to such a standard as to be used with confidence for both engineering design and cost estimates, and to determine the recovery factors to be used in financial evaluations. This is one of a series of papers on placer mining in the western United States. The author has endeavored to give a general outline of the available placer deposits in Boise County, Idaho, together with a description of current practices and the recovery costs of the principal producers. The paper is based on a field examination by the author in May and June 1937. Boise County (fig. 1) is in the southwestern part of Idaho. It has a maximum length of 60 miles, a maximum width of 42 miles, and an area of approximately 1,600 square miles.

By now the term AFMAG has been fairly well introduced to the mining industry. Several papers have been presented and published concerning AFMAG (references 1 and 2). However, the term AFMAG remains rather new to the industry, and the exact place which AFMAG occupies in the minerals exploration field is still somewhat uncertain in the minds of many who may have use for this new and interesting method of electromagnetic exploration for conductive minerals. It is the purpose of this paper to again review the basic theory of the AFMAG system, to describe and - illustrate the equipment and data presentation as used in aerial surveying, and to provide some idea of the cost and nature of airborne AFMAG surveys. This paper is primarily of a general descriptive nature and presents AFMAG theory in a schematic rather than mathematical form; emphasis is placed on the equipment, the present method of data presentation and survey operations, since it is believed that such, information will now generally best serve to inform the mining industry of the characteristics of the AFMAG system.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. The Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET?s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialised in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET?s program in mechanisation and automation for narrow vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies (Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. Specifically, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators? needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The main problems identified following meetings with mine operators are described with a few elements of solution and the Web site created for the broadcast of the results is presented.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

In the mining industry, drilling accuracy has a significant effect on the economy of operations. In this paper, results from the Nkana Division of the former Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines are presented. For the stope investigated, it was found that the extra operational costs alone were 462% of the planned costs! Clearly, there is more than good reason to pay attention to drilling of good quality holes.

"The development of uppers drilling at Brunswick Mining is reviewed. This paper describes design criteria for drilling patterns and the research required for selection of a suitable drill jumbo. The success of the uppers drilling program based on operating procedures is highlighted. IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd., operates a 10 500 tonnes per day lead /zinc/copper I silver underground mine some seventeen miles southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick .The No. 12 orebody, first discovered in 1952 by a group headed by M.J. Boylen, had extensive development, including two shallow shafts (500 ft), and test work carried out on it by St. Joe Lead between 1953-1957. However due to complex metallurgy and depressed metal prices, the operation was suspended.In 1961, a group comprised of M.J . Boylen, K.C . Irving and Patino acquired the rights of St. Joe Lead to the No. 12 property. A concerted development plan was initiated along with construction of the necessary sur face facilities and by July 1964, the property was in production at 4500 tons per day.In 1967 Noranda Mines Ltd. acquired operating control of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd."

I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. 'The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. To the-Salt Lake City Conference on Reverberatory Smelting Practice: Through the courtesy of Mr. Scott Turner, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mr. G. L. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. "The nature high carbon graphite with fine particle size has low commercial value because of its narrow application range. In order to improve its value, this paper has studied the methods for nature spherical graphite. The nature spherical graphite can be used as the battery material in the field of electronic product battery and new energy automobile battery, basis on the physicochemical characteristics and particle feature of graphite. In this research, the Fixed Carbon (FC) grade of the graphite sample is more than 95.0% and the particle size of the graphite sample is from +325 mesh to -100 mesh. There are many methods for nature spherical graphite, including the fluidized bed airflow mill, the hydro-spheroidization mill and micropowder mill. The testing results indicate that the method of ACM micropowder mill is the best because the spherical shaping ratio and production yield of spherical graphite are both the best.According to the testing results of the ACM micropowder mill, the best process includes two stages of coarse crushing, four stages of fine crushing and twelve stages of shaping. And two kinds of spherical graphite products can be got, which are the product of D50=22.85 µm and the product of D50=15.43µm, and the whole yield of them is up to 54.43%. So, it lays a foundation for the high value utilization of this kind of graphite resources.INTRODUCTION Graphite is isomer of the diamond. Graphite ore resources are mainly concentrated in China, Brazil, India, followed by Czech, Korea, Mexico, Canada and other countries. Graphite ore has lots of characteristics by itself crystal structure, such as good resistance to high temperature, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, good lubricity, plasticity, chemical stability and so on. So, Graphite is widely used in metallurgy, machinery, electrical, chemical, petroleum, nuclear industry, defense industry and other areas. [1,2,3] Natural graphite ore has low geological Fixed Carbon (FC) grade. FC grade should be enriched to more than 94.0% by mineral processing. [1,2] The particle size composition of this high carbon graphite affects its application value. The part of +100 mesh particle size has high application value. The part of -100 mesh particle size has low value because of its limited application field. In order to improve the value of-100 mesh particle size, this part high carbon graphite can be made into spherical graphite. And the value of the spherical graphite is great, it is more than 8 times of the feed. This paper has lots of tests for spherical graphite preparing with the fine particle size natural high carbon graphite. And it lays a foundation for the high value of this kind of resource."

O2, NaCl03, H202, NaOCI and Ce+4 have been examined as oxidants in an alkaline carbonate system for uranium in situ leaching. The South Texas and New Mexico ores contained up to 2.6 meq/g of reducing compounds that consume oxidants in the leaching operation. Leaching rates did not increase linearly with the oxidation potential of the oxidants. A mild oxidant can be used to maximize uranium oxidation selectivity and oxidant efficiency. 02 can oxidize most of the uranium mineral with an adequate rate and high oxidant efficiency.

The physical, chemical and mineralogic characteristics of zeolites allow commercially important applications. While adoption of zeolite technology is slow in the United States compared to other regions of the world, continued testing and research has shown a wide range of uses for these minerals. They are important catalysts in petroleum refining, molecular sieves able to separate gases, and chemically inert carriers of reactants. The zeolite clinoptilolite produced by St. Cloud Mining Company (clino) (SC) is used in animal hygiene and animal feed, especially concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), horticulture, water treatment, floor dry, aquariums, air and other filters, and odour control. Clino can remove cations from solution, and surface-modified zeolite (SMZ) is a sorbent for the removal of anions and neutral organics from water. Specific clino applications are: control of chemical pollution in groundwater, removal of organic compounds from oil field waters, and elimination of pathogens from sewage effluent. Combining the sorption capabilities of SMZ with chemical or biological transformations can yield complete removal of toxic materials from contaminated water. Continued development and marketing of zeolite products will be a growth market far into the future. The CAFO market for zeolites is the most significant growth area in the United States over the next few years. SMZ, currently less than 1% of St. Cloud sales, will continue to gain market penetration for many years.

During the last 100 years, the submerged arc furnace has been one of the most amazing diversified melting units. These furnaces have found their application in more than 20 different main industrial areas such as iron, ferro alloy, chemical industry, lead, zinc, copper, refractory, titanium oxide, recycling, phosphorus etc. Such an evolution was only possible because of tremendous efforts in research and development and due to the large range of design solutions. The worldwide strong competition also forced the industry and plant suppliers to develop highly efficient, economically balanced units in optimized sizes and with long lifetimes, to adapt to the market conditions. Regarding the environment, the plants improved significantly in terms of water treatment plants and off-gas treatments as well as on site recycling units. This paper will give a short overview regarding the history of the furnace and the latest developments in today?s main application fields: ferro alloys, non-ferrous, special application and recycling. In addition new activities in research and developments are briefly discussed.

The Chinese coal industry is the largest coal producer in the world. The total production in I995 was 1.28 bnt. On the way towards introducing a market economic system, this mature industry is facing major challenges. The main problems are a large surplus of manpower, shortage of current assets and capital, low productivity, high casualties and a huge deficit. This paper discusses the present situation and the future developments in the Chinese coal industry. The current policy can be stated as ‘rapidly developing the state collieries and improving the village and private mines; integrated development to achieve an economic operating scale and encouraging a diversified economy; rapidly exploiting and developing in the North west and South west; promoting productivity and efficiency; welcoming multi-sources and types of investment; setting up coal exchange markets; and the careful control of resources and the environment'.
