"A young private R & D organization, COREM celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009. Managed by a consortium of nine mining and metallurgical companies, COREM has the mandate of increasing the competitiveness of its member companies through the development and transfer of mineral processing innovations. Typical technologies developed by COREM include alternative mineral processing techniques, novel operating strategies, innovative sensors and process simulation software. Many of them were developed in partnership with universities and selected research organizations.Because the COREM membership base is broad (from ferrous to base, to precious metal industries), its R & D program must deliver technologies with applications within a wide spectrum of mineral processes. Comminution, physical (gravity and magnetic) separation, flotation, cyanidation, pelletizing and thermal processes are the main topics of the R & D program. A number of new technologies have been developed and transferred to the plants of member companies. These examples of transferable technologies demonstrate the capability of COREM to impact the bottom-line of its member companies.INTRODUCTIONCOREM is a private mineral-processing R & D organization that operates from its own laboratories and pilot-plant with its own staff of professionals and technicians (about 95 persons). "Locked cycle testing has become more common practice in the last 10 years. Reasons vary from a desire to avoid pilot plant testing, demand for more variability testing within deposits, and perhaps most importantly, a request from the financial institutions who invariably finance many of the projects. Surprisingly, many people don’t understand locked cycle testing, analysis and balancing. This paper provides a brief overview of locked cycle testing, and then progresses into a more detailed discussion on the analysis and balancing of locked cycle test data. The paper endeavors to educate CMP personnel on how to determine if the test was good and if a reasonable metallurgical projection was made. The paper uses case studies to illustrate the key points.INTRODUCTIONA locked cycle test is a repetitive batch used to simulate a continuous circuit. The basic procedure has a complete batch test performed in the first cycle which is then followed by similar batch tests which have “intermediate” material from the previous cycle added to the appropriate location in the current cycle. These batch tests, or cycles, are continued in this iterative manner for an arbitrary number of cycles. The final products from each cycle, i.e. final concentrate and final tailings, are filtered and thus removed from further processing. At the end of the test, all the products, final and intermediate, are dried, weighed and subjected to chemical analysis. The test is balanced and a metallurgical projection is made.This description can be found in many of our classical textbooks for the mineral engineer 1, 2, 3,4. Unfortunately, none of these textbooks provide any discussion beyond the basic procedure. Often, they provide comments such as in Taggart’ where he states; “It is questionable whether in any case it approximates mill results any more closely than the standard batch test”. It is truly surprising that our classic textbooks promote that locked cycle tests are more art than science, and suggest that they can be of dubious value. The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act. (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation.3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 anal oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material will be presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom Patents. III. Other Foreign Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1953 and 1955.

A 3800 m long temporary water-retaining dike has been constructed under extreme conditions in the harsh northern climate to enable two of the kimberiite pipes at the Diavik Diamond Project reserve to be mined using open pits. The Diavik Diamond Project is located on East Island at Lac de Gras in Canada's Northwest Territories, approximately 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. The dike which has been constructed in up to 25 m deep water from crushed granite quarried from the site projects into Lac de Gras encircles the first two of the kimberiite pipes to be mined. An 800 mm wide diaphragm cut­off wall constructed of bentonite, cement and crushed rock, totalling 33,000 m2, and a two-phase jet grouted curtain wail at its base, totalling 8,400 m2, have been installed through the dike and underlying till foundation into bedrock. The cut-off is designed to minimise water seepage from Lac de Gras through the dike. In order to ensure that the dike had adequate internal stability and diaphragm wall construction could proceed safely, the crushed rock fill material dumped into the lake was first compacted by TR 75 deep vibrators. In 2000, Bauer Maschinen GmbH of Schrobenhausen, Germany were awarded the contract for the supply of all specialist foundation equipment required on site and for providing technical support to the Canadian main contractor Lac-de-Gras-Construction throughout the construction of the cut-off walls during 2001 and 2002. Installation of the cut-off walls was completed in July 2002, three weeks ahead of schedule, and dewatering of the inner dike areas commenced just 5 days later and has continued throughout August and September. After completion of extensive testing of the diamond recovery plant, the mine is scheduled to go into full open pit production in February 2003.

This publication is the third of a series of reports on hazards and the prevention of accidents at blast-furnace plants that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, Technical Paper 106a being the first and Technical Paper 136b the second of the series. This bulletin, which is arranged in three parts, treats of the causes and prevention of blast-furnace breakouts, explosions, and slips. The first part discusses blast-furnace breakouts, the hazards therefrom, causes, and features of furnace design and methods of operation that tend to prevent breakouts or lessen their number, and points out safety measures to be adopted. The second part takes up the theory and causes of gas explosions at blast-furnace plants and reviews the better methods in use for handling gas. The third part analyzes the causes of hanging and scaffolding in blast furnaces, with the resulting slips that frequently cause injury to the plant and danger to the workmen, describes features of construction and furnace design and methods of operation employed to prevent hanging and slipping, and suggests precautions and safeguards.

Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. Rockbursts are a major hazard in deep hard rock underground mining and tunneling. To date a significant number of rockbursts still defy conventional explanations. A review of rockburst case histories in the literature has shown that pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading are prone to rockbursting in situations where they are least expected under conventional knowledge of rockburst causes. Despite the evidence of the effects of shear loading on underground infrastructure, and the frequency of their occurrence, little is known about how this loading mechanism causes such large magnitude events and extensive damage. In this paper analytical and numerical modeling are used to understand the behaviour of pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading. The numerical modelling results show that pillars under shear loading are less confined than their equivalents in loaded in pure compression in the same geologic environment, and are therefore more brittle and weak. For tabular excavations under shear loading, the behaviour depends on whether such excavations are continuous, co-planar or offset with rock bridges. Analytical results based on slit theory show releasable potential energy in tabular excavations increases nonlinearly with excavation half-span. The study results are important for the safe and economic extraction of orebodies under shear loading.

In New York City, on the walls of the library of the United Engineering Societies are these words:"Engineering-the art of organising and directing men and of controlling the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of the human race," but who, reading the schedules of even our best engineering schools, would infer that engineering is an art or that it should always havejn mind the benefit of the human race? While it must be remembered that our engineering schools exemplify the British cult of the amateur, that cult which lets men who have never attended a lecture on "Education" or perhaps nevereven read a book on it, become enginering teachers by profession (and so educators by inference), the root of the matter is to be found in the fact that our educational aims, and consequently our educational practice, seem suited much better to the position engineering held in the community in 1900 than to the position it holds to-day. This civilization of ours has developed, !;loth for good and for ill, into one based largely on engineering achievement; technical progress is so continuous and so rapid that thevalue of descriptive knowledge of current practice is ever lessening; enough must be imparted to make the young graduate immediately employable, and this amount is sufficient for illustrating the principles on which practice is based and on which its advance depends, but the young graduate's technical progress depends much less on his having acquired additional knowledge than on his ability to acquire knowledge, so, paradoxically, the more useful knowledge there is availabJe the less of it the student should be taught.Less conspicuous but fully as important is the enlargement of the field of work of engineering graduates, especially its extension to the initiating of policies and to the broader problems of administration. At present the road to such positions lies normally through a considerable period of professional work, but it is by no means unlikely that the field will soon include much that requires little professional expel'ience. During the past decade (1937 to 1947), including the war years of heavy demand for metals, the United States realized about one-eighth of its antimony requirements from domestic production, chiefly in Alaska. In World War II, our foreign supply sources became endangered; and uncertainty in our Far Eastern supply made this nation focus on Alaska’s mineral resources with a Production Gear that centered in the Bureau of Mines experimental station at College (Alaska). The development work known as District or central deposits. The strategic mining districts included that of central Alaska was reorganized at Ketchikan Mining Districts. Mines were located here had produced considerable quantities since 1901; but methods for exploration had come from 1936 to spring 1942, some $4 million produced in gold alone. Statistics relating to available ores are those selected by type and exploitation periods with wide variety applied. During the summer of 1941, as part of an extensive Geological Survey program continuing through funds provided by U.S., geological surveys spent six weeks mapping an area approximately two square miles surrounding mines. The mines working both surface & underground work employed these men in mapping exercises.

Highwall or face profiling has long been used to facilitate the design and placement of front row blastholes to ensure optimum burdens. Traditionally, a large number of laser measurement points obtained from the rock face or highwall, were input in profiling software packages. This method can be time consuming and requires access to the rock face with a complete view of the highwall, to be successful. Stereo photography has also been used to generate the rock face surface, but this method also requires access to the highwall (and pit floor in some instances) for measurement of reference targets or points.

Many copper processing flowsheets in the Democratic Republic of Congo include the leaching of oxide ores containing copper and cobalt, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, and precipitation of cobalt salt. Recently, cobalt price gained momentum, driven mostly by the fast-growing electric vehicles battery market. The ore blending scenarios tend to prioritise high cobalt grade ore, whatever the content of copper and other impurities. Therefore, many copper solvent extraction circuits are running below design capacity. The variability of feed induces a variability of the leach solution with respect to copper, manganese, and silica contents. It is thus important to adjust hydrodynamic and metallurgical parameters of the solvent extraction plant to optimise metallurgical performance, production cost, and the quality of the copper electrolyte. This paper presents some results on how solvent extraction plant parameters have been managed in two solvent extraction plants running with lower than designed copper input. INTRODUCTION Referring to a report of the chamber of commerce of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the online publication Agence Ecofin (2019) indicated that the DRC ranks in the fifth position of the world top copper producing countries with over 1.2 million tons produced in 2018. The same year, 66% of the world’s cobalt was produced in the DRC at over 106,000 tons. If the political situation remained stable and the new tax regime introduced in 2018 did not deter private investors, copper production could reach 1.4 million tons/a in 2020 as pointed out in Mining.com (2019). Forecast figures for DRC cobalt production vary widely depending on analysts. The DRC online magazine Actualité.cd (2018) referring to a ministerial source forecasts over 141,000 t cobalt/a for 2020. The reality will depend on many factors, including the selling price, the supply compared to the demand, and finally the reaction of investors to the new DRC tax regime. The growing electric vehicle batteries market has been the major key driver of the price of cobalt. The five years historical cobalt price graph in figure 1 from infomine.com (2019) shows that the price of cobalt peaked at over 40 USD/lb in the first quarter of 2018. Cited by the online Magazine Creamer Media, Smith (2019) has indicated that the long-term demand of cobalt will likely remain strong.

In the premining stage of engineering design, the only available data are obtained from core drilling. It is often not sufficient for a realistic design of strata control. During the development, an access to the geological formation is created, enabling in situ testing. Obtained data can be utilized accordingly to improve preliminary design. The available methods for testing are described with emphasis on their application for a longwall system. The optimum design ensuring continuous operation of the high output longwalls is critical because their downtime is very expensive. Optimization of ground control measures also has the potential for substantial savings by elimination of unnecessary support.

THIS PAPER deals with the analysis of results from axial testing of vertical single piles, i.e. the most common field test per-formed. Despite the numerous tests which have been carried out and the many Papers which have reported on such tests and the analysis thereof, the understanding of pile test loading in current engineering practice leaves much to be de-sired. The reason for this is that the engineers have concerned themselves with mainly only one question: "Does the pile have a certain least capacity?", finding little of practical value in analysing the actual capacity and the pile-soil interaction. This Paper aims to show that engineering value can be gained from elaborating on a pile test ? during the actual testing in the Held, as well as in the analysis of the results. The first portion of the notes make use of an earlier Paper by the author (Fellenius. 1975). However, additional views and recent literature have been incorporated.

The established crown pillar extraction method at Gold Fields Australia Ltd.’s Crusader Mine, leads to the significant dilution and poor recovery of ore due to caving of the overlying loose rockfill. The application of selectively injecting specifically developed ‘FB200’ ettringite (calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate) type cement grout into loose rockfill to form a stabilised rockfill material, enables an artificial crown pillar to stabilise the surrounding rock mass and prevent caving of the overlying loose rockfill during crown pillar extraction. Investigation of the geomechanical criteria for crown pillar extraction beneath stabilised rockfill has enabled the safe and efficient extraction of two crown pillars at the Crusader Mine. La méthode actuelle d'extraction des piliers horizontaux à la mine Crusader dont la propriétaire est le Goldfields Australia Ltd amène à une dilution sensible du minerai, à cause de l'effondrement du remblai peu compacté qui se trouve au-dessus. "INTRODUCTION The tremendous expansion of industry during the war and the unprecedented demands for metals and minerals are reflected in the production and use of explosives during that period. The increased use of explosives brought added safety problems to industry because of the necessity of using men as blasters who were not entirely familiar with and some who were totally unfamiliar with the characteristics of some or all of the various explosives. A discussion of the characteristics of the ordinary types of explosives used in: industry should assist in giving a better understanding of the hazards attending their use. Explosives are compounded so they may be used with reasonable safety provided the user understands and follows the procedure recognized as standard safety practice. Short cuts and the failure to understand and use recognized safe practices, as well as the selection of explosives unstited for the work at hand, are all part of the safety problem,The extent to which explosives are used in the United States is shown by a study of the statistics compiled by the Bureau of Mines 4/ regarding them. Some of these statistics are shown below and serve as an indicator of the tremendous number of men engaged in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives. Theme men are exposed to the inherent hazards attending this occupation and they should be familiar with the recognized safe practices relative to explosives."

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

The classical definition of a beneficiation engineer as one who treats an ore in order to separate and discard worthless fractions by essentially physical means is obsolete. Technology in the profession has advanced so rapidly during the last two or three years that educators have not been able to coin definitions to keep up with the pace. In the past some people have hesitated to include leaching or even agglomeration as minerals beneficiation, because of the major chemical changes involved. This view has fallen by the wayside, especially because a majority in the profession have become actively involved in extraction and pyro processes that go far beyond the original definition of mineral dressing. To say that there is a great revival of interest in leaching is putting it mildly, for the uranium business, like the gold business, now depends almost entirely on leaching. This revival of leaching, long overdue in mineral engineering, has been stimulated this year, especially as a result of the relaxation of security restrictions surrounding the recovery of uranium from its ores. It has brought new unit operations to minerals beneficiation, namely ion exchange and solvent extraction. These operations have appeared as resin-in-pulp, solvent-in-pulp, and liquid-liquid systems. In many cases these leaching and separation procedures, now reaching the production stage, have been engineered by minerals beneficiators. The trend toward leaching has also had impact on the technology of beneficiating other nonferrous minerals, especially copper, manganese, columbium, tantalum, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and the rare earths.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

"I bid you a hearty welcome and I know by your attendance at these meetings you will gain a great deal of valuable information, as well as have a wonderful time. "We have been very ably represented by Mr. John H. Emrick as General Chairman, assisted by our good friend Mr. Fred W. Whiteside, our secretary and treasurer. I know they have worked very hard in selecting the various committees, who in turn - by the looks of our program have gone all out to prepare material that should be of great interest to us. I trust we will be attentive to the subjects presented and freely enter into the discussions, also relating our problems and experiences. I am sure this will prove both profitable and beneficial to all present. "The main purpose of these conventions is to become acquainted with each other, renew old acquaintances, talk over our problems, and have a little fun and relaxation from our every day routine. "Let us not forget the manufacturers, the distributors, the operators, or the press because it is through their splendid support that this organization is successful. "Since our last meeting we have gained many new members, whom we especially welcome. We are sorry to have lost a few. I am mindful, at this time, of two very good members from my home state who have passed away, Walter Wetzel, a former president of this institute, and Lee Alger, at the time of his death, Vice-President from Utah. We also lost very recently our assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Everret Davis. These men contributed a great deal to the institute and the coal industry in general. I am sure they are greatly missed by all who knew them."
