Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is underway at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines. The new route from concentrate to metal includes 2-stage fluid-bed treatment; pelletized concentrate (33 percent Cu, 7 percent S) is first desulfurized (to about 0.5 percent S) in an oxidizing atmosphere, and in the second stage the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10 percent CaO is routed to a smelting furnace to separate metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and the Cu content of the product at this point are in the 97-98 percent range. The metal must be refined to remove sulfur and iron to make wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is the pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment, which has permitted shorter reaction time, decreased dusting, and facilitated subsequent processing.

New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

Management of mineral resources through land-use planning procedures is not a new concept, particularly at the local level of government. Colorado may well be one of the first states, however, to vigorously attempt to evaluate on both the state-wide and regional basis, mineral resource potential and to make certain that potential for mineral resources is included as one of the primary factors considered in the local land-use decision-making process. Less than a decade ago the only consideration given to mineral resource extraction, particularly aggregate resources, was whether or not they could be produced at the particular time they were needed. This attitude has now shifted to the other extreme, not only in Colorado, but other states as well, so that other interests, especially housing projects, mountain subdivisions, recreational and wilderness areas are gaining prime consideration in land-use decisions. Ideally, in a more acceptable median position, mineral resource potential would receive definite consideration at the local level.

In 1971, United States Borax & Chemical Corporation (U.S.Borax) initiated a mineral exploration program on federal lands in Southeast Alaska, with the commitment that any possible development would be done with great care for the environment. This program resulted in the discovery of a molybdenum deposit and the location of mining claims in 1974, in an area 45 miles east of Ketchikan, now called the Quartz Hill Molybdenum Project (Figure 1). At the time of this mineral discovery, the area was part of the Tongass National Forest, managed by the Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, and open to mineral entry and multiple use. In late 1978, the area was designated Misty Fjords National Monument and closed to mineral entry, and in late 1980 the area surrounding Quartz Hill was classified as Wilderness. These new laws and regulations, as well as the special interest environmental groups which oppose resource development, have significantly delayed and increased the costs of developing Quartz Hill.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

Traditional headed rebar has existed in the mining industry as a ground support product for many years. The head of a rebar bolt is most commonly produced by hot upset die forging. Upset die forging produces a rugged, simple head that performs well. Certain elements of the head must comply with regulatory standards, such as ASTM F432-95, which offers a standard test procedure to ensure quality of the product. The head style produced by all major manufacturers has been optimized to reduce manufacturing costs, provide greater miner safety and provide an excellent performing product. Observations were made in some mines of heads failing under in-situ loading. These observations could not be replicated according to the ASTM testing method. This paper highlights the problem and how a solution was developed. The development includes pictures of in-situ failures from the underground operations, laboratory replication tests indicating how this loading occurs, and then the use of this calibrated test method to validate the new design created.

The second Belt Symposium in Missoula, MT, Oct. 9-16, 1983, was designed by its conveners as a field conference on progress in the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup rocks. The symposium was sponsored by the University of Montana with corporate support by Anaconda Minerals. Asarco Inc., Exxon Minerals Co.. Hecla Mining Co., Molycorp Inc., Noranda Exploration Co., and Utah International Inc. Introduction The Belt Supergroup is a thick middle Proterozoic sedimentary sequence deposited in a basin along the edge of the North American craton. Subsequent geological events have modified the basin so its remaining rocks outcrop in Montana, Idaho, northeast Washington, southeast British Columbia, and southwest Alberta. The Canadian equivalent of the Belt is called the Purcell Supergroup. Several similar age basins occurred along the western edge of the Proterozoic North American craton. The sedimentary sequence in the Belt basin aggregates is more than 18 km (60,000 ft) in the thickest section, where the bottom is still unexposed and the top removed by erosion. The limits of the Belt basin are poorly known because of later sedimentation and tectonic disruption. Knowledge about the Belt terrane has been difficult and tedious to obtain because the rocks are generally monotonous and fine-grained. During the last decade, new 1:250,000 scale reconnaissance maps of most of the Proterozoic Belt terrane were published, open-filed or otherwise brought close to completion. These maps provided the opportunity and challenge to consider the stratigraphy and tectonics of the Belt Supergroup as a complete basin. This broader view has contributed greatly to the solution of numerous geological problems created by previous, more focused work. Along with the availability of better geological base, there have been new exploration developments. The 1973-1983 decade saw proof of the commercial viability of the Cu-Ag mineralization at the Troy mine. The conclusion was also accepted that the Sullivan mine was a sedimentary massive sulfide. So was the conclusion that the Cu-Co mineralization at the Blackbird mine at Cobalt, ID, was the result of similar submarine exhalative processes. And there were discoveries of another Cu-Ag deposit "larger and higher grade" than the Troy mine and of two new massive sulfide districts. The Belt-Purcell terrane has long intrigued exploration and mining geologists as the host of Pb-Zn-Ag veins of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene district and of the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, British Columbia, one of the largest Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in North America. In the mid-1960s, Bear Creek Mining Co.'s discoveries of the stratabound copper-silver occurrences in the Revett Formation brought new interest in the basin's geology. The recognition of the Sullivan ore body as a sediment-hosted massive sulfide has also generated minerals exploration activity in the US portion of the Belt basin. This activity increased again after the Australian discovery of the world class Olympic Dam deposit at Roxby Downs, South Australia. This occurred because of some suggested similarities in the regional geologic setting of the Belt basin with the Adelaide geosyncline, the host for the Olympic Dam deposit. Technical Sessions Technical sessions topics included Lower Belt and Ravalli Group stratigraphy, Middle Belt carbonate and Missoula Group stratigraphy, Belt-Purcell stratigraphy, structure and tectonics, strata-related mineral resources, geochronology and geophysics, geochemistry and isotope geology, and a summary of significant problems. Evening poster sessions dealt with the topics and papers presented each day. Since the first Belt Symposium, mapping of the stratigraphic units and their tectonic setting has enabled geologists to progress in conducting a basin analysis. Belt Symposium II revealed no concensus on many aspects of belt geology. However, basic stratigraphic studies have reached the point that models can be constructed. The Prichard Formation is equivalent to the Aldridge Formation, but detailed correlations were not previously available. Studies were made by Finch and Baldwin (Cominco American) and by Cressman (US Geological Survey). These studies established important correlations of key markers within the Aldridge Formation to units in the Prichard Formation. This will help eliminate geologic interpretation problems at the US-Canada frontier and make Belt basin reconstruction more accurate. Also, the Sullivan ore deposit was shown to be formed in the deeper distal part of the basin. This contrasts to the more proximal depositional position of the Prichard Formation. Hamilton

The Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization zone near Molai (Greece) was explored by more, than 60 drillholes. Promising results led to the decision of additional drillholes in order to confirm the expected spatial extension of the deposit. A multiobjective approach is described which optimizes the location of a set of 5 additional drillholes. The decision is based on estimation errors for grade, thickness and depth of the main ore bearing layer, with respect to cut-off values for grade and thickness. The linear combination of these variables defines a favorability index which is used for mapping optimal drillhole locations. The map shows several clusters of favorable cells. A declustrering algorithm is used to select a representative cell for drilling in each cluster.

The 1996 Arizona Conference was held in Tucson on Dec. 8 and 9. Attendance was 648, a 12% increase from the 1995 conference. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, representing SME sections from throughout Arizona and adjacent areas. In addition to those representing mining and processing operations in the Arizona region, the meeting was well attended by interested parties from throughout North America. These included vendors, consultants, academia, research organizations and corporate management. The technical program highlighted the meeting. It consisted of a keynote address and morning and afternoon technical sessions. In the technical sessions, 23 papers were presented by the mining, hydrometallurgical, smelting, geology and mineral-processing divisions. The conference was then capped by a banquet that included a talk by a noted economist. Keynote address The program was kicked off by a keynote address titled "Forecasting for the 105th Congress," by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ). He was elected to Arizona's Fourth Congressional District in 1994. Shadegg serves on the House Budget Committee, the Resources Committee and the watchdog Government Reform Committee. He stressed the familiar conservative positions of reducing government spending, balancing the budget and states rights. As a member of the House Resources Committee, Shadegg stated his support for the mining industry. Technical sessions Mining division. Two of the five presentations described developments at two Arizona mining operations. T.J. Swendseid of Phelps Dodge presented a paper titled "New developments at Morenci" and P. Garretson of BHP presented a paper titled "Startup of the Robinson Project." Morenci continues to expand its operation and recently broke records for production. Other developments at Morenci included the completion of a 600-m (2,000-ft) drainage tunnel and stockpile rehandling. In addition, Phelps Dodge moved Morenci's crusher plant. It was completely disassembled and reassembled in just eight days. Another interesting presentation was "Predictive maintenance techniques for large electric shovels at Cyprus Sierrita," presented by T. Ritzel of Cyprus Amax. The presentation described high-technology methods for predicting maintenance problems. These methods included vibration analysis, ultrasonic detection, infrared thermography, electrical measurements and tribology (the science of lubricant evaluation). The benefits of these techniques are reduced downtime of the equipment, as was demonstrated in case studies at the mine. The other presentations were "Introduction to NOSA 5-star safety program," by R. McKinnon, BHP Copper North America, and "A new design guideline for mine sealing," by K. Fuenkajorn, Rock Engineering International. Hydrometallurgical division. The hydrometallurgical session consisted of five papers. These included a presentation titled "Recovery of gold and silver using guanidine-based extractants," by M. Vining of Henkel Corp., Tucson, AZ. In this presentation, guanidine-based extractants LIX-79 and AURIX resin were introduced. LIX-79 was shown to have applications in copper-gold and high silver ores. In ammonia-cyanide leaching, AURIX was shown to be more selective in CIL vs. RIL comparisons. Other papers in the hydrometallurgical division included "Application of cobalt in the copper industry," by J. Hawke, OMG Apex Inc.; "Series parallel conversions and production gains at Cyprus Miami Mining's dump leach and solvent extraction operation," by E. Bilson of Cyprus Amax; "Lead alloy anode corrosion at the San Manuel SXEW tankhouse," by W .M. Gort of BHP Copper and "Hydrometallurgical treatment of copper refinery slimes," by B.C. Wesstrom of Phelps Dodge. Smelting division. Three papers were presented in the smelting division session. These included updates and reports on improvements at the Hayden, Hidalgo and BHP San Manuel smelters. For example, W.A. Dutton of Phelps Dodge presented "Recent improvements at the Hidalgo Smelter." These changes were aimed at reducing environmental emissions and increasing production. They included modifications to the fugitive-gas collection system to reduce particulate emissions, rubber lining the acid plant scrubbers to reduce corrosion and the installation of a cold lime softening system for water treatment. Equally interesting papers were presented by D. Norton of Asarco, Hayden, AZ, in a paper titled "Update of the Hayden smelter process," and by D. Jones of BHP Copper, San Manuel, AZ, in a paper titled "Update on first campaign of the BHP San Manuel Copper." Geology division. The session began with a paper that outlined the progress of an exploration project in South America. "The Pierina exploration project, Ancash Province, Peru" was presented by J.D. Lowell, Lowell Mineral Exploration, Rio Rico, AZ. Another paper was then presented on a copper deposit in Grant County, New Mexico. "Zonation of supergene copper minerals at Hanover Mountain, Grant

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

Results obtained from conditional simulations and multiple indicator kriging were compared in the assessment of two different mining methods proposed for the extraction of the down-dip extension of a nickel-sulfide ore body located in the Thompson mining camp, Canada. An enhanced turning band simulation algorithm, supplemented with an unfolding technique, was used. A floating stope optimization process was used to effectively compare tonnage and grade figures. A calibration exercise was also conducted in the upper portion of the ore body. This study demonstrates that conditional simulations provide better spatial models for conceptual mine design and capital budgeting decisions.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. The alphaDOSIMETER is a complete, integrated system designed to monitor the immediate worksite of underground miners where the disintegration for radon daughters is a risk to the health of mining personnel. The dosimeter weighing little more than one pound is worn by each miner throughout the entire shift and is powered by the miner's cap lamp battery. After this integration period, the unit is connected to a reading network whereupon the day's data is dumped, calculated and stored. Beginning in July 1980, prototype units were subjected to vigorous underground testing in uranium mines in Canada and the United States and in tin mines in Cornwall, U.K. The testing results are summarized and proposals advanced for a typical mine monitoring system utilizing the alphaDOSIMETER.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous-miner-generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory-generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared.

Newmont Gold has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for the pretreatment of low-grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the preg-robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous matter in the ores. Therefore, an alternative heapleach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from these preg-robbing bioaxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process was successfully applied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Satisfactory test results were achieved, encouraging the continuation of process development.

The Unisys mainframe computer at the mine site is used in programs that analyze the ventilation network, keep records on various ventilation installations, calculate the results of measurements and produce reports on ventilation conditions in the working places and on the main air distribution, and plan and analyze the cooling system. All the programs are interactive to terminals. There are a series of data files that are generated by some programs which may be used by other programs. Most of these programs have been developed in-house. The computer is also used as a word processor via a vendor-supplied text editing program to produce memos, letters, and to keep up-to-date lists of equipment used.

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. The Stratoni Operations in northeastern Greece rely on a selective backfill method to exploit high-grade lead-zinc deposits. Underhand cut and fill often results in spans approaching 6-9 m (depending on the mining method employed) and a competent backfill is required to avoid dilution problems. Cement consumption represents a significant mining cost and through improving the control of the backfill batch preparation, the cement content could be greatly reduced without jeopardizing the grade control. A new distribution system was installed and a QAIQC system designed in cooperation with the operators to allow a wide range of backfill recipes, providing cost savings to the mine. A review of possible failure modes and the consequent strength required for the chosen mining method was also completed and indicated potentially significant cement content reductions. The calculations are supported by 12 years of experience at the mines which provides a valuable insight into the applicability of the approach developed.
