The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

Introduction A well-designed mining plan is one that minimizes cost and mining induced problems and maximizes recovery of the coal reserve. To minimize the negative effects on surface structures caused by ground subsidence due to underground mining activities, two kinds of practices are commonly employed by mine operators. One is the support technique, which leaves an area of coal unmined or partially mined beneath the structure to be supported. The other is the protection technique, which protects the structure when it is subsiding with the ground by taking advantage of the ground subsidence process (Luo et al., 1992). In designing the supporting technique, the only currently available method in the US is the one stated in the Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985). However, the size of the support area designed by this method will be excessively large and result in a wasteful use of coal reserves when the overburden depth is more than 350 ft. A more scientific method is proposed in this paper for designing the support area. This method is based on a large amount of subsidence data collected throughout a number of major US coal fields and the authors' experience with monitoring and protecting surface structures that have been undermined by longwall panels. It considers the critical deformation indices that a structure can tolerate, and depth and height of underground extraction. A support area designed by this new method will not only assure the safety of the structure to be supported but will also maximize the extraction of the coal reserve. Design of support area using the Pennsylvania rules The Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985) state that no underground mining activity should be permitted beneath structures where the overburden depth is less than 100 ft. An exception to these rules is provided for mine related openings that provide access to the surface for such as entries, shafts, boreholes and site-specific variances for entry development. If the overburden depth is greater than 100 ft, the mine operators should utilize either of the following: •Extraction techniques that provide for planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner, or •Support techniques designed to prevent subsidence damages to features identified as: •Public buildings and non-commercial structures [ ] customarily used by the public, including churches, schools and hospitals • Dwellings, cemeteries, municipal public service operations and municipal utilities in place on April 27,1966 •Impoundments and other water bodies with a storage capacity of 20 acre-ft or more • Aquifers, perennial streams and water bodies that serve as a significant source for a public water supply system, and •Coal refuse disposal areas. The support techniques require that a support area be left beneath the surface structure or feature to be protected (Fig.1). The support area should consist of coal pillars, with their size and pattern being such that their bearing strength is maximized. The total coal extraction within the support area should be limited to a maximum of 50%. The support area should be rectangular in shape and determined by projecting a line at a 15° angle from the surface to the coal seam with an offset distance of 15 ft from all sides of the structure. The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

The coming years should see moderate growth in the US coal industry. That growth may come at the expense of the oil and natural gas industries. Conoco pegs coal growth at 2% a year, until the year 2000. During that same period, Conoco projects only 0.5% annual oil growth and "a flat or negative trendline" for natural gas. This is compounded by the fact that coal has a delivered cost per Btu that is only half as much as it is for natural gas and only a third as much as it is for oil. So said Ralph Bailey to many of the 2600 attending the opening session of the American Mining Congress Coal Convention, May 12-15, in Pittsburgh, PA. Bailey is chairman of the AMC. He is also chairman of Conoco. While coal's projected growth is not spectacular, "it is in fact almost an assured growth," Bailey said. Weak oil and gas prices will likely prevent faster growth for US coal. Most of coal's increased demand will come from the electric utility industry and expanded steam coal exports. Conoco's study projects that domestic coal demand will be strengthened in the 1990s. By then, the present surge of nuclear power plant constuction will be over. And there will be a lack of acceptably priced, large-scale generation alternatives for utilities. "It is not likely that any electric utility is going to be ordering new nuclear reactors," Bailey said. "And as oil and gas supplies become scarcer and more costly, it is only logical that coal is going to fill the gap." At the same time, Bailey believes the US coal industry must find ways to lower its costs. He said cost excesses can be found in "regulatory overkill, labor, and simply bad habits" hidden by years of high inflation. "Those costs have now been laid bare, because we are going through a pe¬riod of disinflation. We have to put our house in order, particularly if we are going to compete in world markets." Bailey also touched on coal research. "The industry certainly accepts the fact that we must find a way to burn coal as cleanly as possible. A lot of work in that regard is going on. I expect there will be some significant break-throughs." Bailey said the coal industry is being squeezed this year. Last year, coal customers accumulated inventories in anticipation of a major coal strike that never materialized. Now, many utility customers are working down these inventories. So they are not taking deliveries on their coal contracts. But coal use is up in 1985, compared with 1984, Bailey said. So increased coal use, along with supply drawdown, should strengthen the coal market before the year is out, he said. After Bailey's presentation, some 100 speakers addressed policy and technical topics at 15 sessions during the four-day meeting. It was the first time since 1977 that the AMC Coal Convention has been held in Pittsburgh. And this year's attendance was up 40% from the last AMC Coal Convention held two years ago in St. Louis, MO. This year's registrants included 228 companies, 225 manufacturers, and 106 associated members. The only negative was the David Lawrence Convention Center. It was less than ideal. By turns, meeting rooms were too small, too cramped, or too far from one another. The session on longwall mining was so crowded that the doors were propped open so conference delegates could peer in. A concurrent manufacturers' forum session needed 50 more chairs to accommodate those wanting to attend. However, on to summaries of some of the presentations. Coal transportation and export Since Congress approved the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, railroad rates for hauling coal have not been excessive. In fact, rail rates for coal have increased less than 0.5% a year, in real terms, since 1980. Moreover, the market oriented principles written into Staggers are contributing to the improved financial and operational health of the nation's railroads. But no railroad is earning excessive profits. That is the gist of a coal transportation study being completed by the US Department of Energy. William Vaughan is DOE's assistant secretary for fossil energy. He affirmed the thrust of the upcoming report. Vaughan did allow that Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations on rate reasonableness could permit the railroads to exploit their monopoly power on captive shippers. INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. This requires the total re-arrangement of all plans for on- coming blending beds and would therefore be ideally suited for

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

A discussion of fillers would not be complete without allotting adequate time to that unique and different mineral material, diatomaceous silica. Historical references to its use challenge the aesthetic aspect of man's curiosity; whereas modern scientific tools have provided a dimension of measurement that has motivated many of its more recent applications. A brief review of what is already known is in order. The diatom is a unicellular, plant-like, microscopic organism, related to the algae1. Its natural function appears to be that of a food for other marine or lacustrine organisms, The diatom's "claim to fame" from an industrial viewpoint is dependent on the fact that it secretes an opaline siliceous skeleton that must survive, chemically and structurally, the geologic processes that caused its formation in the first place; its subsequent demise, burial, consolidation, and alteration; and finally, its ultimate exploitation by man--in somewhat that order. In addition to its siliceous nature, the skeletal structure of the diatom possesses a variety of shapes, patterns, and sizes that have not only been the intrigue of microscopists for decades, but have served to set diatomite apart as an industrial mineral; and have reserved for it applications that cannot be satisfied by any other material. Its chemical inertness, its intricate structure, and its intrinsic hardness-coupled with fineness and friability-- are generally known and have accounted for its application in a wide range of filtration and filler uses. The increasing use of the electron microscope has considerably expanded our knowledge of heretofore unseen secondary and tertiary structure of submicron dimension in the diatom valve. The development of electro-sensing methods of particle size measurement which seem to supersede sedimentation and microscopic techniques has portrayed size distribution in a more realistic light. Interest in the surface chemistry of these silica structures has further strengthened our understanding for certain uses. Thus, new tools and ideas have made possible the introduction of diatomite into such sophisticated technologies as that of chromatographic supports, its improved utility in paint applications for the control of gloss and sheen, and its usefulness in the entirely new concept of "Dry Acid Concentrates." Each of these applications has been discussed elsewhere before people particularly interested in analytical chemistry, in paint, and in liquid handling, respectively, where the diatom has been a means to an end. The emphasis here, before the mining fraternity, however is on diatomite as a raw material with reference to the uses mentioned above. It is therefore toward an awareness and understanding of diatomite properties pertinent to these newer filler applications that this paper is directed.

For this paper, blending is conceived as a linear process that takes a proportion from one stockpile or location and mixes it with another proportion from another stockpile or location, with the aim of obtaining a set of attributes in the final combination that satisfies a given quality standard. A blending class is the combination of ore attributes and grade limits that should be stockpiled in order to achieve the target quality for the process Plant. Current literature considers the number of blending classes in the Open Pit Scheduling Problem as fixed; however, this paper shows how to define specific blending classes for a given deposit so that the schedule can be solved with Sequential Linear Programming. Finally, a practical application in a Peruvian copper mine is shown, involving four ore attributes: alteration code, arsenic, oxide content and copper grade. INTRODUCTION In copper ore deposits, blending for quality has not been a typical issue as it was for coal and iron ore; however, current copper deposits in the world are becoming geologically and chemically more complex than in the past and is not uncommon to have quality standards involving up to four attributes, introducing an additional complexity to the mine scheduling process [1]. In order to solve the Open Pit Scheduling Problem with multiple ore quality constraints, two assumptions are necessary [2]: - Grade constraints are defined only by specifying an upper and lower limit; - Ore attributes in stockpiles are pre-determined, i.e., the upper and/or lower grade limits defining each stockpile are already known at the time of setting the schedule. Assuming each ore attribute is classified as high, medium or low, and there are four attributes to be controlled in the target ore quality, the number of possible blending classes would be 3^4 = 81. This number is impractical to manage in Operations, and increases the complexity at the time of running the schedule; therefore, a more efficient way of classifying ore is required. Note that in practice, one blending class can be split into more than one stockpile location due to physical capacity constraints. Therefore, the number of stockpiles could even be more than 81. BLENDING CLASSES DETERMINATION For a given set of ore grades with lower and upper limits to be achieved, one has to find all feasible ore classes such that when blended, their grades will lie within those limits.

The control of Florida phosphate flotation plants is largely based on the visual observations of experienced operators, both in recognizing good and bad froth conditions and in making judgments about the composition of feed, concentrate and tailing streams. Chemical analyses lag the process by at least two hours and therefore only assist in recalibrating the operators' vision when major deviations occur. An image analysis system has been developed by IMC Fertilizer to improve upon the accuracy and precision of the composition estimation process. It still relies upon the operator taking a representative sample, but provides a measurement in about 15 minutes after that sample is obtained. This paper describes the system and its use and presents comparative results for various process streams.

Although production generally satisfies demand for rare earths, new markets may make undeveloped resources, particularly those rich in yttrium, more interesting. A Precambrian carbonalite orebody at Mountain Pass, California, has been the world's largest rare earth producer. Minor rare earth production comes from titanium placer mining in Florida and uranium mining in Canada. Prior to operations at Mountain Pass, North American production was mostly from placer deposits that constitute large, low-grade rare earth resources. Newly discovered North American rare metal resources in peralkaline igneous rocks are potential yttrium producers. Most of these resources are in a continent-wide belt of anorogenic magmatic rocks approximately coeval with mineralization at Mountain Pass. Other untapped rare each resources in North America are generally light rare earth-dominated and small or of low grade.

INTRODUCTION Anticipated increase of nuclear fuel production in the future coincides with growing concern about the occupational health risk of miners from inhaled radon decay products. As a consequence it has been suggested to even lower presently permitted exposure levels (NIOSH, 1980) and implement more stringent control on measurement programmes. Compliance with these regulations requires large investments in new or modified ventilation systems as well as in increased expenditure for staff and instrumentation for health physics operational monitoring. Since both costs are directly related to the overall ore production costs, this can have far reaching implications with regards to the economic feasibility of certain mining operations and consequently reduce estimates of low-cost minable ore reserves. In addition there is increasing evidence that the radon problem is not limited to the nuclear fuel cycle only, but can also represent a significant hazard to non-uranium miners. A key component in the cost-effective implementation of legislative control measures is the monitoring system employed. The choice of system is decisive for the total costs of installation and maintenance, manpower requirements and accuracy of nuclide determination. In the following operational specifications are defined for monitors in mining and milling environments. Different types of available instrumentation are discussed with regard to their suitability for practical radiation protection in underground mines, open cut mines and mills. ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS Underground mines Radon in the air of underground mining operations is exhaled from surrounding rock surfaces, crushed material and, to a lesser extent, from water seepage. Whilst in uranium mines radon releasing ore bodies are generally localized in distinct areas, radon sources in non-uranium mines can be very dispersed throughout the system of mine tunnels. The ventilation scheme used influences the absolute atmospheric level of radon as well as the equilibrium conditions between radon and its decay products (factor F). In uranium mines mechanical forced-air ventilation is normally the only way to achieve and maintain legally required nuclide levels. This causes the F-factor to be rather low, e.g. in French CFA-mines F is of the order of 0.2 (Francois, Pradel, Zettwoog, 1975). At the same time the fraction of unattached radon decay products (fp) can increase due to the high air velocities employed. However, it is possible to find non-uranium mines with either natural draught ventilation only or assisted on demand by forced air ventilation during special operations or climatic conditions. Thereby the F-factor is more dependent on seasonal changes of temperature differences between outdoors and mine atmosphere and work routines. As a result F can cover a wide range from 0.02 to 0.95 (Steinhäusler, 1976). The use of filters or electro-precipitators in mine ventilation systems can modify the atmospheric characteristics twofold as it generally decreases the content of radon decay products, but at the same time increases the content of the unattached fraction fp . Average concentration levels of radon decay products are mostly lower in mechanically ventilated non-uranium mines than in equally ventilated uranium mines and are below 0.3 Working Level (UNSCEAR, 1977). However, some working places in non-uranium mines, specially with only natural draught ventilation can occassionally approach maximum permissible levels as defined for uranium mines (Strong, Laidlaw, O&apos;Riordan, 1975; Snihs, 1976; Sciocchetti, Scacco, Clemente, 1981). Open pit- and surface mines Radionuclide levels of radon decay products in the atmosphere of these mines are mostly too low to represent a significant inhalation hazard for miners, ranging typically from 0.03 to 0.1 Working Level (Steinhäusler, 1976). However, personnel using airpurifying respirators or working in cabins ventilated with filtered air can be exposed to a radon atmosphere with low value for the F-factor (F [<] 0.1) and high fp-value up to 80 % (Leach and Lokan, 1979). Mills Atmospheric radon concentration in crushing, grinding, drying and packing sections depends on the radium 226 content of the ore, ore storage methods and ventilation system employed. Providing adequate ventilation ([>] 2 air changes per hour) and control of dust production radon and its decay products represent only a minor problem (Saconney, 1979). MONITORING OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE Objectives Operational monitoring of the working places provides information on: - confirmation of appropriate control of the routine mining methods employed - indication of abnormal conditions. Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Fullers earth has been mined since about 1920 in southwest Georgia and the adjoining area of Florida. In 1935, the mineral was named "attapulgite" after the source of a sample near the town of Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia. Mining and processing of the clay was described in a 1930 publication1 at a time when petroleum refiners were the major users. In the years since then, the uses and users of attapulgite have multiplied, and both mining methods and processing methods have been changed to optimize the clay for the new uses. A comprehensive review of the properties and applications of attapulgite 2 has been published. Only a brief review will be given here to explain the properties being sought and to show how these properties are optimized by mining and processing practices.

The usual method employed to determine the direction of flow in a connecting airway in advance is to conduct a survey between the two existing nodes being connected by means of the new airway. It is then assumed that airflow will take place from the node with higher pressure to the node with lower pressure. The purpose of this paper is to examine this direction-of-flow problem --using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network --and specify some conditions that ensure that flow will take from the higher-pressure node to the lower-pressure node. It is concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important properties of the direction-of-flow problem.

The challenge of managing geological uncertainty in mine planning is central to optimizing resource extraction while minimizing risks and costs. This paper introduces a novel approach to coal mine planning by integrating chance-constrained programming to address the uncertainty inherent in mining operations. The main takeaway from this work is the demonstration that focusing on reducing the variance of high-quality coal blocks, rather than low-quality ones, can lead to better blending outcomes, higher profitability and more efficient resource utilization. The study presents a case study of a coal mining operation, using chance-constrained programming to manage the uncertainty surrounding coal property predictions, specifically the predicted coke strength after reaction (CSR).

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

A brief introduction is made on the existence of sulphides in the top gas of the Midrex Shaft Furnace, giving consideration to the operation of the furnace and the liberation of sulphur as well as its consequential effects on the reduction process. The text shows a study of sulphur distribution in the pellet, emphasizing the importance of this distribution in relation to the liberation of sulphur during the reduction. A study was made to determine the sulphur compounds that exist in the pellets, showing ways of controlling the sulphur distribution and reducing its liberation?during the reduction.

There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

The property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3,600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10" C to 22° C throughout the year. Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960&apos;s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group.
