This paper reports on some recent work in which several schemes were developed to model jointed rock under high stress, with particular reference to the phenomenon of "block motion" observed during dynamic loading of underground structures. Three approaches were made, corresponding to an increasing relative importance of internal block deformations as compared to rigid block movements. The first one uses distinct element method and assumes internally rigid blocks, which can break, repeatedly, whenever an empirical crack criterion is met. In the second approach each block is allowed three degrees of freedom to deform internally. The third approach, still in the development stage, permits arbitrary deformation of all blocks, which are internally decomposed into finite-difference zones and automatically rezoned during slip to preserve the calculation accuracy on joints. The last two schemes allow arbitrary constitutive relations for the intact rock, and all three schemes permit the geometrical arrangement of joints to be arbitrarily complex, in contrast to normal Lagrange, finite-difference programs, which are unsuited to model discontinua.

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

Traditional linear approaches oversimplify the complexities of ore blending. Adopting nonlinear blending models in mining and mineral processing is critical to enhancing prediction accuracy and allowing optimization regarding nonadditive variables, such as metallurgical recovery. This study implements a simulated annealing algorithm in short-term mine planning that seeks to optimize the metal recovery by considering how to blend the ore in the mine better. Two nonlinear metallurgical recovery models are used as inputs to the algorithm to represent synergistic and antagonistic blending. The results of the case study demonstrate that the optimized schedule exhibits improvements in both blending behaviors when contrasted with conventional linear-based scheduling plans.

The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

The applicability of SEM/EDS techniques to particle-by-particle analysis of respirable coal dust is evaluated. It is demonstrated that the correction procedures needed to account for the failure of most EDS systems to detect light elements (especially carbon) become unreliable for particles in the respirable size range (< 10 µm). Other serious limitations arise from x-ray counting errors for coal particles with low but significant mineral content and particle counting errors for liberated mineral matter.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. &apos;s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. We developed a statistically based strategy for sampling the surficial material of mine-waste dumps for use in screening and prioritizing historic dumps on abandoned mine lands. This sampling strategy entails the collection of a representative composite sample from individual dumps and allows for regional or watershed-based assessments. One 30-inment dump-composite sample collected using this sampling strategy contains as much information, relative to average value, as 30 individual grab samples at 1/30 of the analytical cost.

Various seam conditions had been examined during longwall production at RAG German hard coal mines. Based on the field data a prediction method was developed considering separation planes as influencing factors for roof falls at the face. The characteristics, orientation, and density of separation are important factors on the occurrence of roof falls. In addition to geological influences, the performance parameters and geometry of support must be considered and optimized for the prediction and prevention of roof falls in a longwall face. Based on detailed macro- and microscopic investigations of e coal seams considering various ranks of carbonization, the origin and characteristics of separation planes are determined and a strata-specific influence on roof fall is interpreted. It was assessed that the coal face fracturing and displacement caused by the stress depend on the floor and roof strata conditions due to activation of the existing separation planes. Field studies are shown giving an idea of influences by advance rates of the longwall face, support delay and hydraulic pressure to the roof control in longwall faces in depth of more than 3000 ft. The analysis includes the application of specific software developed for longwall roof fall prediction as a result of a European research project. The software allows a laminar graphic display of roof fall probability, which is used for recognition of risk areas and risk management.

Polymer utilization has increased steadily over the past several decades; however, their usefulness is sometimes limited by natural forces. For example, polymers tend to degrade when subjected to elevated temperatures. This degradation can release toxic fumes, create excess smoke, and aid in the spread of fire. For these reasons, many polymers are filled with various compounds which impart flame retardancy (FR) properties. These fillers do not make polymers non-combustible; rather, they increase resistance to ignition and reduce bum rate. Also, they suppress smoke generation, which is important as up to 80% of fire-related deaths are due to smoke inhalation [1]. Therefore, methods to impart flame retardancy in polymers are industrially important. The early flame retardants used in polymers were halogen-based, working on the principle of inhibiting free radical formation in the vapour phase thus impeding combustion propagation [2]. Usually these were combined with antimony compounds such as Sb203 to decrease loading, yet provide the same FR qualities. However, questions have arisen recently concerning toxicity of halogenated flame retardants. Possible release of toxic compounds (such as dioxins) upon combustion has been reported [3]. Fear of future regulations concerning halogen addition has led to the search for different FR fillers. Two of the more common replacements for halogen-based systems are alumina trihydrate (Al(OH)3 or ATH), and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2)&apos; These systems impart flame retardancy through heat absorption and by release of water of hydration upon their decomposition. ATH has a low decomposition temperature (230°C), limiting its use to unsaturated polymers, epoxies, urethanes, and some wire and cable formulations. However, some advantages of ATH over halogenated FR are that it is relatively cheap, doesn&apos;t generate toxic gases, is non-volatile, and is impervious to moisture [2].

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-ordering grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the Austin, Klimpel, and Luckie procedures. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56, 0.82, 8.36, 4.41, and 5 m in diameter assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distributions and capacities for batch grinding in the smaller mills and open-circuit grinding in the larger mills. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values except for the 5-m diam mill. The Bond method gave capacity predictions that were 4570 to 150% too high.

This method covers the system configuration, excavation methods and costs, initial support systems and final lining systems. This study was performed by the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers for the proposed Gregory County Hydro- electric Pumped Storage Project, and presents a synopsis and the results of the studies performed.

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

This paper reviews commercial installations of FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines for metallic, nonmetallic, and coal flotation. Second generation FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines employ dual aeration systems to provide a mixture of air bubble sizes. Operating data presented in this paper shows that optimum grade and recovery relationship for each rougher, cleaner, and scavenger application are obtained by adjusting the ratio and volume of aspirator air bubbles and micro diffuser air bubbles.
