The Mission Mine is an open-pit copper mine located 18 miles south of Tucson, Arizona in the eastern foothills of the Sierrita Mountains. Mining is done on 40 foot benches using P & H 2100 shovels and 170-ton Terex trucks. Drilling is accomplished With two (2) Bucyrus-Erie 45R?s, one (1) Bucyrus-Erie 60R and two (2) Ingersoll Rand T-5?s. For secondary drilling. a Joy VCR-ISO truck mounted drill is used. The mine is currently operating 3 shifts/day, 7 days/week at 59,100 tons per day, with the mill receiving 28,500 tons per day. The management of the drilling and blasting program requires extensive record keeping in all phases of the operation. This is essential in order to evaluate different products and procedures.

The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. This paper outlines the continued improvements in those industries as well as the as well as the outlook for new technology in this rapidly changing area.

Historically, research organizations have made significant contributions to the development and commercialization of new chemical products for the mining industry and examples of commercial results are cited With the recent demise of research organizations within the mining industry and dynamic changes in the industry, the supporting role of R&D groups has become limited or non-existent. Cat- reduction requirements and new raw-material sources offer future opportunities for R&D organizations to continue their effective participation in the commerical development of new chemical products. Potential areas of interest for future process applications are reviewed.

One way of increasing conveyor systems productivity is by monitoring the key parameters in the systems. In this paper, a new line of smart bearings will be presented and discussed. The new bearings are capable of monitoring temperature, vibrations, and belt speed for early detection of potentially serious problems. The new smart bearings have built in sensors that are carefully integrated and protected for long life service. These bearings are going to be the key to increasing the up time of belt conveyors in the future.

There are many variables to consider in the evaluation of nickel laterite deposits including the concentrations of nickel, iron, silica, and magnesia. These variables show complex relationships with each other such as mineralogical constraints, non-linear correlation, and heteroscedasticity. The complex multivariate relationship between the variables cannot be reproduced by conventional Gaussian or indicator geostatistical techniques. We introduce the stepwise conditional transformation method as a pre- and post-processing multivariate transform for the stochastic simulation of a nickel laterite deposit. Transformed data are multiGaussian and independent at h = 0; thus, cosimulation can be avoided after verification that variables are independent at all lag distances. Back transformation restores the features of the input multivariate distribution to the simulated realizations. The complex multivariate correlations are reproduced and sensitivity issues are addressed.

Nonliving dried water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms) roots were investigated for the biosorption of cadmium, lead and other heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Dried water hyacinth roots, when suspended in solution, strongly and rapidly sorb several different metal ions. Factorssuch as reaction time, pH, the initial concentration of metal ions, the presence of other metal ions and biomass concentration were investigated. The adsorption was shown to follow the generalized Langmuir adsorption equation. The relative affinity of the roots for lead is greater than that for cadmium. The batch sorption kinetics of the uptake of cadmium and lead can be described by an apparent first-order reversible reaction model. The roots could be regenerated after the metal ions were stripped. Successful desorption of Cd and Pb from the biomass by acidic CaCl2 solutions revealed that the metal uptake phenomenon is reversible, implying physical sorption of Cd and Pb.

This paper describes some recent work on the identification and development of new chemical reagents aimed at improving the industrial processing of phosphate ores by froth flotation. In particular, three chemical product families which will be discussed appear to offer enhanced flexibility by: 1) utilizing a small amount of a silica control reagent which can significantly reduce the amount of anionic (carboxylic) collector required for a given P2O5 recovery level; 2) utilizing a new anionic collector family which offers high P2O5 recovery and selectivity versus standard carboxylic collectors; and 3) utilizing another new anionic collector family which has, in some tests, allowed for selective removal of dolomite from apatite. Examples and use characteristics of each of these new chemical ideas will be presented.

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

Selected voltammograms in tetraborate buffer solutions in the presence of ethyl xanthate or isopropyl xanthate at pH 9.3, for chalcocite, covellite, chalcopyrite, and enargite mineral electrodes, are presented. The concept of critical Eh of dixanthogen condensation (Ehc) is introduced, and the line of Ehc is thermodynamically defined in plots of log [X i] vs Eh, for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl xanthates. A reaction scheme of xanthate oxidation in four steps, involving the dixanthogen condensation step, is proposed. A first attempt to interpret mineral flotation from a more general point of view is made. The electrochemical mechanism of dixanthogen formation and condensation is considered as a particular case of a more general and relevant phenomenon, which is the decomposition of the collector giving hydrophobic colloidal forms, whose associative behavior in bulk solution and at the mineral/solution interface is governed by colloid chemistry.

The Bokan Mountain area on Prince of Wales Island, AK, contains vast quantities of heavy rare earth minerals. To lessen the US dependence on foreign sources, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated yttrium recovery from this ore. By sulfating the ore at 250 ° C for 1 hr at an H2S04:ore ratio of 1:1 and then water leaching the sulfated material for 1 hr at 20% solids and 25ºC, over 74% of the yttrium, cerium, and lanthanum were solubilized. Solvent extraction (SX), using a synergistic combination of OPAP and DEHPA, selectively loaded 100% of the yttrium. Yttrium was stripped directly as a solid using a 2M, 35 ° C NaOH liquor. When the OPAP/DEHPA mixture was tested in a continuous SX circuit, yttrium loading and stripping were 100% and 96%, respectively. The organic showed excellent recyclability properties with minimal solvent loss.

The operation is unique because it is integrated into the main process stream of the copper circuit The plant processes 1408 m3/h of copper solutions containing about 10 mg/L of uranium. Computer assisted mine planning and design applications are routinely used by many Australian mining companies, However, the design process requires human expertise to recognize and evaluate the potential pitfalls. This paper introduces the application of a commercial optimization software (WHITTLE 4D) for strategic planning of an open pit mine in Western Australia. The authors present their experience in intelligent application of the optimization program while incorporating many technical and nontechnical obstacles. This paper provides some guidelines on how to apply the optimization software without loosing sight of practicalities. Moreover, this paper also shows how to build project evaluation guidelines for non-experts.

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

Stability assessment of entry roofs is an essential precursor to all underground design. Both multi-seam interaction and longwall mining can subject entries to radical changes in the surrounding stress field. Such loading changes frequently produce instability and failure in the roof, floor and pillars. Roofs are shown to be vulnerable to stress-induced failures, particularly when the load is unsymmetrical. To predict the effects of changes in stress field, roof failure conditions under increasing loads were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. A large range of geologic conditions were evaluated and incorporated into the model using Monte Carlo methods. Entry analysis using the model showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research a roof stability model SESAME was constructed for roof stability evaluation under specified loading conditions.

During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty-acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption (over silica surfaces) and high reactivity of fatty-acid collectors toward apatite under slightly acidic conditions (pH 5 - 6.5). The process was successful in upgrading various Florida and North Carolina phosphate samples containing 7.7% to 15.3% P205 and 62.3% to 77.2% siliceous gangue (Insol). The resulting concentrates assayed 28.1 % to 33.1 % P205 and 4.1 % to 9.9% Insol, with high P205 recoveries of 81.8% to 92.2%. Depending on the degree of surface contamination of the silica particles in the flotation feed, one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to achieve higher-grade phosphate concentrates.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally's Hotel, Reno, NV. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. He will explain which recovery process proved to be the most economic. Other papers in the introductory session include How to Best Use Consulting Firms to Accelerate the Development Process, by H. The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

Chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic data have been obtained for suites of plutonic rock samples from the Guichon Creek Batholith of British Columbia and the Mineral-Iron Mountain-Sturgill Peak- Cuddy Mountain-Peck Mountain areas of western Idaho. Intrusions at these two geographically separate localities represent composite plutons ranging from early gabbro through quartz diorite to late grano- diorite and more silicic-alkalic phases. They are early Mesozoic (200 m.y.) in age, and contain porphyry-type mineralization in close spatial and temporal association with late-stage intrusions of porphyry, aplite, pegmatite, and (or) breccia. Country rocks are eugeo-synclinal assemblages of metasedimentary and metavolcanic greenstones of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age. The petrochemical evolution of these intrusions, and the effects of subsequent hydrothermal alteration and metallization, are illustrated by standard ternary diagrams of the major oxide and mineralogical data. Samples plotted on an AFM diagram suggest a calc-alkaline magma trend. However, their distributions on NKC and Qz-Kf-Pf diagram show well-defined trondhjemitic (Na20-rich) and tonalitic (quartz-rich) variants to this trend, which are similar in part to those reported for mineralized island arc plutons of the northern Caribbean and southwest Pacific, but which contrast markedly to those for continental plutons of the Bingham District, Boulder Batholith, districts of southern Arizona, and elsewhere.

Availability of cement in the industrialized and developing countries of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia for the 1975 - 1980 period are discussed in this report. Quantitative data includes production, imports, exports, and apparent consumption. An account of new cement plants and plant extensions is provided. Countries and areas covered include: East Asia---Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines; South east Asia---Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia; Oceania (Australasia)---Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji.
