Methane gas explosions are a major risk in underground coal mining operations. The severity of such explosions can range from local area damage to massive loss of miners’ lives along with significant damage to mine infrastructure and ventilation controls that may lead to mine closure and loss of the entire operation. This study demonstrates the viability of integrating a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model into a longwall mine ventilation model to simulate methane gas explosions in the longwall face area. The resulting 3D methane gas explosion simulation can provide better understanding of the fundamental physics and the potential impact of an explosion in an underground longwall coal mine.

"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Live tunnel connection details to TARP Mainstream Tunnel were addressed in a previous paper submitted at the World Tunneling Conference in 2016."

"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electric field (E-field) sensing to send text based communications using two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. INTRODUCTION Wireless, Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point to point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. This ability allows TTE communication to function without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure, such as repeaters. As a result, such communication systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Wadley 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer 1973; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate through a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers 1928; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Yenchek et al. 2012)."

"A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Another dangerous statement is that CO2 in higher concentrations leads to headaches so people should leave such areas. A last example found in the literature is that at 3 % the breathing volume is doubled and at a concentration of 20 % one can felt some warmth on the skin. Both is not wrong but can lead to false conclusions. /6/"

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

One might ask why someone like myself, involved in the determination of taxes, should be speaking at a "cost engineering" session of a national engineering society. While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much, as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully yea will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. That question may then lead to another question: What does the amount of taxes have to do with me? I'm an engineer or manager; not an accountant or a lawyer. If I may take a few minutes of your time, I might be able to present in a brief discussion some interesting facts that will provide the answers to those questions. My discussion will be directed mainly to Federal taxes. However, much of it will be applicable to state and local taxes, also.

What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

The Upper Santa Cruz Groundwater Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary, see Figure 1. The principal water use area lies between and includes the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the groundwaters of the Upper and Lower Santa Cruz Basins. The Upper Basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground- water areas. The Tucson Water Use Area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the Basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita- Continental critical groundwater areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier Use Area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental Use Area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical groundwater area. The first study of groundwater in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905 and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of groundwater development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the Ground Water Branch of the United States Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), have published a series of bulletins concerning groundwater occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the "Arizona State Water Plan" (1), comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in the State of Arizona, and a study of alternative futures.

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

In past years, water drainage control in coal mines has been primarily directed on the basis of water quantity rather than quality. Due to the recent intense interest in total ecology and environment, emphasis has shifted to the point where the water exiting from a mining operation may be of better quality than when it enters. In most operations this has meant the use of treatment methods (neutralization) while the technology for the prevention of acid drainage is being developed or refined. To date, underground abatement of acid formation has generally been less expensive but also less effective than surface treatment of the mine water. It seems probable that total mine water pollution control will have to include both underground abatement and surface treatment methods. The general acid producing reaction involving the oxidation of pyrite - 2FeS2 (pyrite) + 702 + 2H20 ? 2Fe2S04 + 2H2SO4 - is well known, even though the individual steps are not clearly understood. The major implication of this reaction, that acid production can be eliminated by not allowing the contact of pyrite with free oxygen or water, has been well substantiated both in the laboratory (1,2) and in practice. (3) Underground abatement or control processes can be generally classified into two types: (1) the effective control or elimination of acid causing reactions within the mine, and/or (2) the reduction or prevention of water flow into and out of the mine. Recognizing the fact that these two types may be directly inter-related, this paper will, for the purposes of clarity and simplification, discuss each separately.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. Asarco has been using computer-aided open-pit mine design since 1966. The in-house developed program package includes drill-hole analysis programs, interpolation routines, and three-dimensional open-pit design programs. The financial analysis step after pit design required that a reasonably accurate schedule be produced so that a good cash flow model could assess the feasibility of a project. The manual method of scheduling was too time-consuming for feasibility work, so a computerized scheduler was required. Since no computerized mine scheduling programs existed, we requested proposals from consulting firms to develop such a program. The selection of a consulting firm, the formulation of the contract and design specifications required about three years to accomplish. The consulting firm, Systems Control Inc. (SCI), of Palo Alto, spent over one year doing the programming and testing alone. The details of the program development were reported in "Computerized Year-by-Year Open-Pit Mine Scheduling," SME-AIME Transactions, December 1974. In June of 1973 the program, which SCI dubbed Optimum Resource Extraction or ORE, was installed. Version 1 of ORE was utilized successfully on three separate properties over a period of two years. During this time it became obvious that some of the original design specifications were restrictive, and certain modifications were required. The ORE program was submitted for modification, and after one year version 2 was operational in May of 1976. The program now consists of approximately 20,000 lines of FORTRAN source statements grouped into 190 subprograms, and runs in a 450K region of Asarco's 370/148 in Cranford, NJ. The Tucson com¬puter (370/115) is tied to the Cranford computer via a 9600 baud leased T.P. line, for running mine scheduling and other large mine planning programs.

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman's trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

Zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) is a unique material with a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. In order to fully utilize this material as a filler, a surface treatment needs to be developed to better improve the wetting and dispersion capabilities of the filler. This paper describes an initial study to characterize the filler as well as investigate fatty acid and silane surface treatments for eventual compounding with thermosetting matrices. It was found that ZrW20, has a point-of- zero charge between pH 2.7-3.0, and that both fatty acid and organofunctional silane treatments appear to be viable surface treatments for this unique filler.

INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.

Gypsum in the host rock, as well as oxidation of sulfides during milling and processing can solubilize sulfate. Acid rock drainage (ARD) also has the potential to generate waters high in sulfate. Even after treatment of the ARD with lime, the treated water can have sulfate present in gypsum saturation levels. Most mine-sites reuse sulfate impacted water but as a mine nears closure, reuse options may be limited and water treatment becomes an option. Furthermore, sulfate discharge requirements, particularly for anti-degredation narrative standards, can be very strict. Freeport has investigated many new technologies to economically remove sulfate from these types of water. A Dutch company, Paques B.V. developed one of these technologies and it utilized biological reactors to convert sulfate into elemental sulfur in a 2-step process. In 1992 the first industrial reference of the SULFATEQTM technology was commissioned at the Nystar Budel zinc refinery in the Netherlands. PILOT PLANT TECHNOLOGY AND DESCRIPTION As shown in Figure 1, the plant contains several process steps, which can mainly be divided into the following sections: 1. Anaerobic biological system in which sulfate is reduced to hydrogen sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria. 2. Aerobic biological system in which hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur by sulfide oxidizing bacteria. 3. Solid/liquid separation in which sulfur, calcium carbonate and biomass solids are separated and dewatered. Sulfate impacted ground water is pumped to the feed water tank through a plate and frame heat exchanger to maintain the solution temperature around 95°F. A custom mix of micronutrients is dosed to the feed tank. This nutrient mixture provides essential elements for the growth of anaerobic and aerobic biomass. Urea is added to the feed tank and provides the required nitrogen source to the biomasses. The pretreated feed water is pumped into the anaerobic reactor. The reactor works on the gas lift principle. Sulfate reducing bacteria utilize hydrogen gas as electron donors and reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. This reaction increases the alkalinity of the solution. Carbon dioxide gas is added in order to control the pH within working range of the reactor. Due to the low solubility of the hydrogen gas, the anaerobic gas mixture is recycled through the system. The gas mixture recycle also provides the gas lift for mixing within the anaerobic reactor."
