The United States has abundant coal resources that could last at least another century. and probably longer at present consumption rates. Geographically, the coal resources are distributed over the entire nation including Alaska, although there are no coal deposits in the highly populated areas on the two coasts. This allows free access to the coal, but makes transportation more expensive. Not all coals can be utilized equally because they differ vastly in quality. The sulfur content of coals, considered as the most detrimental acid rain-causing element, varies from as low as 0.3 percent in some areas of the western U.S. to 5 percent or more in parts of the Midwest. The chlorine content, which causes corrosion of plant hardware, also varies regionally. The 1990 amendments of the Clean Air Act of 1963 (CAA) require that emissions of sulfur be restricted and rolled back in two stages by the year 2000. There have been a number of reports expressing concern about the future of the industry in the states where high sulfur coal is produced. The remedies devised by the federal government and many coal-producing states in the past to "se-cure" the future of the regional coal industries have focused on the physical task of removing sulfur rather than the economic challenge of doing so at a cost that will enable high-sulfur coals to survive and compete. The past remedies, generally, were not specific enough to account for the characteristics of regional coal deposits and did not look at the coal market as an integrated national and international entity. The State of Illinois has, in recent years, taken a more comprehensive approach to the solution of the problem.

The West Gates Deicing Industrial Waste Pond Expansion project at Denver International Airport seeks to expand utilities to accommodate additional terminal gates. The project includes six tunnel crossings beneath taxiways and runways with lengths ranging from 239 to 2,025 linear feet. Excavation methods include shielded tunnel boring machines and steerable auger boring. Designed initial support includes liner plate, steel ribs and lagging, steel casing, and Fiberglass Reinforced Pipe and ranges in size from 24" to 132". This paper will discuss challenges associated with the overall layout and design of the project, including contingencies to protect critical infrastructure. In addition, a construction update is provided.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

Linear programming (LP) has proven to be a most effective mechanism for modeling a vast array of practical problems, while the development of LP applications in engineering have been extensive enough to show its advantages and limitations. In this paper: we focus on the properties of the widely-wed linear programming transportation (LPT) model formulated and developed by Koopmans (1) . There have been many models of this type applied especially in the field of energy economics (2-7). Since most of these applications can be linked to the seminal work of Henderson (8), we stall present our discussions based on his work.

Aggregate is an essential input to every economy, so governments need to ensure a sustainable supply of these resources through planning. There is also a need to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, in which wastes are recycled rather than landfilled, so as to increase eco-efficiency. The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. The material balance computer program (MAT-BAL) developed at the Minerals Resource Research Center of the University of Minnesota, has been used in conjunction with routine process profile samples taken in the potash compaction plant at Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemicals Corporation, Ogden, Utah. In this manner, a uniform data base is being established for the process, and selected key indicators are used for decisions in plant operation and maintenance. With present emphasis on improving product quality and increasing production rates, the standard data base system provides a means of measuring results from test programs to optimize the circuit. The development and application of this process control method is discussed. The compaction plant computer-assisted data base has been in existence for only two years, but it has made significant contributions to the knowledge of the process and continues to assist in monitoring the plant performance. It is anticipated that the material balance program will be adapted to the GSL flotation plant in 1979, and to other circuits in the potassium sulfate chemical plant.

The application of geophysical technology relative to the exploration, planning, and operation of coal mines is expanding. This is due to the trend of the industry to increase the size of operations, use of mechanized equipment and mining of more difficult coals, where unforeseen conditions can affect mine profitability. Coal is a good geophysical target because of its lower density, higher electrical resistivity, lower seismic wave velocity, and lower magnetic susceptibility in comparison to typical country rock. The more important techniques are well logging, high resolution seismic reflection, seam wave velocity, and radar. These methods can be used to map coal horizons, determine the physical properties of the coal, and identify mining hazards. The methods are not a pancrea however. Their use should be based on a careful assessment of their expected success and cost benefit analysis in comparison with conventional technology, primarily drilling, which none of the techniques presented should entirely replace. In general, the level of technology developed for geophysics surpasses their current level of application to coal problems. In some cases, identifying hazards in advance of mining using seam wave seismic in particular, the state of the art has been developed in Europe and is awaiting fruitful application in the United States.

Emery is a rock that at one time held a large share of the abrasives market. The introduction of synthetic abrasives, however has forced it to settle for only certain niches in the marketplace. This loss of market share is due mainly to the higher amounts of impurities and weaker internal structure that naturally occurring minerals have compared to manmade materials. The use of rocks and minerals as abrasives dates back to early man, who used flint, quartz, and other natural materials to fabricate various tools. During the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution imminent, the character of the abrasives industry was changed forever as synthetics were introduced. Frank B. Norton is credited with producing the first manmade abrasive when, in 1855, he manufactured a vitrified grinding wheel using emery grit and clay. Before Norton's accomplishment emery had been the only commercially available abrasive. The latter part of the 20th century has seen synthetics capture an increasing share of the abrasives market from natural materials. The term emery is believed to have been derived from the words emeri (French), smeriglio (Italian), and smiris (Greek). The term corundum, for the principal mineral of emery, seems to have originated from kauruntaka, the Indian name for the mineral. GEOLOGY Emery is a gray to black, granular rock comprised of various minerals including corundum (A1,0,), an iron-bearing mineral (usually magnetite-Fe,O,, hematite-Fe,O,, or hercynite- FeAI,O,), and several trace impurities such as mullite, titania, silica, and magnesia. The hardness of emery normally ranges between 7 and 9 on the Mohs scale, depending on its mineral com- position and level of impurities. Corundum, the hardest mineral in emery, typically has a hardness of 9. The specific gravity of emery ranges from 3.2 to 4.5, also depending on mineral composition and purity. The crystallography of each mineral contained in emery differs somewhat. Corundum exhibits an hexagonal crystal structure, whereas magnetite forms within the isometric system, frequently as octahedral crystals. Hercynite, an iron spinel, is also isometric. Hematite has an hexagonal structure but often is found as botryoidal and reniform masses. Principal deposits of commerical emery are found in the United States, Turkey, and Greece. In the United States two emery producers in the Westchester County-Peekskill area and one in the Cortlandt County area of New York closed their mines in the late 1980s. Commercial production in the United States now comes only from the western Cascade Range in Oregon. The emery in New York has a typical A1,0, content of 41.5%. Most of the rock is not true emery because it contains a mixture of spinel and magnetite but very little corundum. The deposits are of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian age and consist of veins in which emery is mixed with olivine, pyroxene, and hornblende. The veins evidently were formed by contact metamorphism and are surrounded by Precambrian schists that contain mica, sillimanite, cordierite, garnet, and quartz. The deposits in Oregon were formed during Miocene time by the contact metamorphism of ferrunginous bauxite by intrusive lamprophyric dikes and plugs. Emery is found in thin layers bordering these tabular dikes, which are usually oriented perpendicular to bedding, and in "surficial placer deposits. The emery deposits in Turkey occur as small, massive, lens- shaped bodies and as surficial placers. They are believed to have formed during Permian and Triassic times. In Greece the principal site of emery production is at Cape Emeri on the Island of Naxos. These deposits consist of lenticular masses of emery surrounded by marble. They originated during Mesozoic time, evidently by metasomatic replacement. Smaller deposits on several other Aegean islands were formed by the metamorphism of bauxite or other alumina-rich materials.

This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunneling region of Abu-Tartour-Project in Egypt create blocks with irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Most of these blocks are not able to move into the free space of the tunnel. Few key blocks are in a position to move and as soon as they begin so, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the (removable) key blocks for walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks; and then determine the best tunnel direction.

Lord Robens, Chairman of the National Coal Board of England announced recently to the world press plans for construction of the largest bulk terminal in Western Europe. This should result in annual freight savings of 22.4 million dollars and between 150 and 190 million dollars of new export business. These are rather substantial amounts for any mining enterprise. Or to put it another way, opportunities to make substantial savings in the delivered price of a highly competitive commodity such as coal are few and far between. One area where such opportunities still exist is in the economical; movement of bulk materials between producer and consumer.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. New, large sulphur deposits were discovered in Poland in 1953, the result of investigations by the National Geological Institute. All deposits occur in a widespread Miocene evaporite unit in the Carpathian foredeep. The gypsum underlying impermeable Sarmatian clays was altered to limestone and native sulphur where penetrated by hydrocarbons and bacteria. All deposits occur in Miocene structural uplifts. The early determination of the genesis of the sulphur deposits and their occurrence in elevated blocks led to an exploration program that successfully located new deposits.

The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the unique pillar stability issues associated with room-and-pillar mining in dipping underground stone mines. The objective of this paper is to study the post-blast impact in and around a pillar, using microseismic monitoring. To accomplish this, a microseismic monitoring system has been installed at a dipping underground stone mine in central Pennsylvania. The microseismic system is comprised of 18 uniaxial accelerometers; 12 sensors are installed in a single pillar and 6 sensors are installed in the surrounding area. More than 4,400 microseismic events have been located near the study pillar following the blasts. The number of triggers increased significantly following the blast, and the trigger rate in the first five minutes was 60 triggers per minute and three triggers per minute over the next three hours. The processing of high-quality triggers indicated a large number of low magnitude microseismic events near the blasting face. The event locations were identified more accurately by using a 3D-velocity model, with an average 9 m expected location accuracy for this array calculated using the system data. Seismicity was absent from the core of the pillar, but significant numbers of events were found following cutter roof along a crosscut as it was developed as well as in the location of a rib failure event. Additionally, the events were located in the roof, showing high number of microseismic events within 0–10 m of the roof line compared to 10–30 m above the roof line.INTRODUCTIONGround control stability is essential to any mining operation for ensuring mineworker safety and health and preventing catastrophic failures of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2018). However, the data that makes up the S-Pillar database consists of shallow depth, flat-lying, single-level mining operations. Therefore, to expand this dataset and to develop guidelines for challenging conditions such as dipping and multi-level mines, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at mines with these characteristics. The study is being conducted using multiple research approaches, including seismic modeling and tomography, numerical modeling (Sears et al., 2019), stress monitoring, and LiDAR-based laser scanning (Slaker, Murphy, and Winfield, 2019). This paper discusses the findings from the microseismic monitoring system installed at the Pleasant Gap Mine, a steeply dipping underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania."

A description will be given of an approach to plant process automation based on the strategy of first developing an information system followed by later development of process models. The advantages of this approach over the unit process control will be outlined. Some insight will be given into the risks associated with this method. These risks can be shown to be primarily economic.' Some reference will be made to two Cominco installations in the interests of illustrating the generality of the information systems approach.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. There has been ho single guide to stack sampling that met the needs of those who have the need to know.
