PDMI mines five different grades of ore. Shovel operators were experiencing problems differentiating one material type from another. In 1997 PDMI decided to try GPS ore control to aid operators in identifying material boundaries. Computer generated ore control maps and GPS data defining the shovels' position is fed to a computer on board the shovel. A monitor, located near the shovel operator, displays material types, their boundaries, and the shovels' position and movement in relation to the mining face. This information has reduced errors in material identification by 50%.

The valuation of known mineral re-serves entails the economic evaluation of the mining enterprise and the valuation of other assets employed, including mining and processing plant and intangible assets. A case study approach analyzes two reserve situations: ownership of reserves (phosphate rock), and leasing of reserve lands (kaolin). The appraisal of the physical property is outlined, along with the economic analysis of the operation. The discounted net cash flow approach is used to value the enterprise, leading to value of the reserves after correlation with other assets employed.

It scarcely 1s possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects seem to follow a fairly consistant pattern; most are large open pit mines, with relatively low grade ore bodies but huge reserves; the total price tag will be in nine significant figures and around half or more of the total cost will be for infrastructure. West1 noted that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures, in the free world. He anticipates that by the year 1975 such investments would reach the $10-11 billion annual figure, and that in the five year period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. The proportion of this total investment which will be financed in some manner is difficult to estimate because of the variety of available financing arrangements. West estimated that around 75% of the total capital would come from internally generated funds, with the balance from external sources. Conceivably a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially it the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and of course, including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized a central composite experimental design to investigate leaching kinetics of pure chalcopyrite in the sulfuric acid-oxygen system. The six factors studied were oxygen pressures of 150, 300 and 450 PSI, leach temperatures of 35O, 65O, and 95O C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16 and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g H,SO,/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. Chemical analysis and oxygen consumption measurements indicatedthat leaching occurs through three consecutive reactions. Temperature was the primary determinant of leach rate and solution acidity was the primary determinant of oxygen consumption, sulfur oxidation, and activation energy.

"A beautiful America will require the effort of government at every level, of business, and of private groups. Above all it will require the concern and action of individual citizens, alert to danger, determined to improve the quality of their surroundings, resisting blight, demanding and building beauty for themselves and their children." "Improvement of our environment" has become a cause much like "motherhood". The increased awareness of the public concerning this subject makes it most unpopular for anyone to be involved in anything that seemingly is detrimental to our environment. And this awarement goes far beyond our biggest pollution problem in America - the distribution of paper, abandoned automobiles, beer cans and other garbage by our enlightened society along every city, highway, trout stream, river and mountain in America. In fact, the greatest awarement comes because of the "sensational" reporting and writing in our various national communication media, wherein the same voting citizens who so generously distribute their refuse about the countryside are emotionally aroused and duped into transferring what is truly a national problem onto the shoulders of a few industries - notably and particularly the mineral extraction industry. Certainly mankind is more and more stumbling over his own garbage daily, a fact that is easier to sell a citizen of one of our large cities than a resident of the wide open spaces of the west. Yet even in the Rocky Mountain states, the "Land of Sky Blue Waters", the "Big Sky Country", and particularly in Salt Lake valley smog is not unknown. Pollution and littering have become problems that need to be faced squarely. In North Dakota alone it has been estimated that one section of farm land each year flows down the mighty Missouri and the greatest producer of sediment is now reported to be the highway department.

The block cave mining method utilized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) generates fines and allows the inflow of water. Both constituents have contributed to unfavorable characteristics: an increase in ore material plasticity and fluidity. Unfavorable material needs to be monitored and managed as it passes from intermediate ore stockpiles through feeders and then to milling operations. We describe an implementation of several Video Data Analytics (VDA) algorithms on smart cameras to quantify the potential fluidity and plasticity by measuring the apparent velocity and agglomeration of material flowing through ore feeders. This approach to VDA on smart cameras is a cost effective, self-contained, solution to identify these unfavorable characteristics. The solution allows the operators to manage the related operational risks, maintain safe production and govern feeder rates when material is unfavorable, which is expected as PTFI proceeds deeper into the underground orebody

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam in northeastern Utah necessitated the construction of a new state highway, Utah-260, to provide access to the dam and the town of Dutch John. A 550-foot arch structure was designed to span Cart Creek, about one mile southwest of the dam. The rock exposed at the site is highly fractured quartzitic sandstone with interbedded shale of the Precambrian Uinta Mountain Group. Eight exploratory holes were drilled, four in each abutment area, to determine rock types, the extent of fracturing at depth and rock strength. Drill cores in the west abutment revealed blocks of quartzitic sandstone loosened by the weathering and partial removal of underlying shale beds. The rock in the east abutment area was found to be highly fractured to depths of 70 feet and as far east as 50 feet from the footing locations. Selected core sections were tested for unconfined compressive strength but the values were not considered-representative of the in-situ fractured rock. To prevent movement along or, perpendicular to open fractures, four drilled-in columns were provided at the base of each footing. These extended 50, feet beyond the base of the footing, along the bearing and inclination of the thrust reaction.

"The EarthScope Transportable Array (TA) of broadband seismometers (www.usarray.org) was deployed across southwest Wyoming from November 2007 through May 2009. During this time period the Array Network Facility (ANF, anf.ucsd.edu) detected and located a total of six seismic events near the trona-mining district. This lack of seismicity is atypical compared to coal mines employing similar mining methods. In this study, eighteen months of continuous seismic data from several nearby TA stations are reexamined using conventional and correlation-based methods to detect seismic events. Waveform cluster analysis and epicentral locations are used to discriminate between mining induced seismicity (MIS) and seismic energy generated from surface blasts at nearby coal mines. The locations and magnitudes of the 143 newly detected MIS events are compared to regional subsidence as measured by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). INTRODUCTION An abundance of natural resources and a favorable political climate have made southwest Wyoming home to multiple large mining operations. Among these operations are five underground trona mines located approximately 50 km west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The trona mines employ room and pillar, longwall, and solution mining methods over an area roughly 900 km2, and produce a sizable portion of the world’s soda ash (Brown 1995). Historically, in the Rock Springs mining district, several relatively large magnitude seismic events have occurred. These events are thought to have been related to mining activity and have caused notable subsidence (Case 1997). The largest event in the region recorded by seismometers, ML 5.1, has been confirmed as the 1995 Solvay Trona Mine collapse (Pechmann et al. 1995). In addition, blasting at surface coal mines near Rock Springs produces significant amounts of seismicity; approximately 50% of all daytime seismic events in the Mountain time zone from 2007 to 2009 locate near an active surface mine in this region (Astiz et al. 2014). Much of the current research related to surface subsidence and induced seismicity focuses on wastewater impoundment (Ellsworth 2013) and hydraulic fracturing. The observable seismicity in geological injection environments is widely variable and McGarr (2014) has argued that, in such environments, the maximum amount of seismic energy that can be released is proportional to the injected volumes. Like injection environments, in extraction (mining) environments seismicity is highly variable depending on many geological and operational variables (Boltz et al. 2012; Carnec and Delacourt 2000; Fritschen 2010; Iannacchione et al. 2005; Sen 2013) and does not always correlate well spatially with subsidence, a surface expression of extraction at depth."

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. Researchers at National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating how fiber-reinforced shotcrete mix designs can be extrapolated from proven designs employing wire mesh. This paper explains the results of round determinate panel tests and relates the flexural strength and toughness of fiber-reinforced shotcrete to known energy absorbing properties of wire mesh. The energy absorbed with central deflection is strongly influenced by the amount of fibres. The higher the energy absorption the more load cracked shotcrete can support. Two types of fiber-reinforced shotcrete were investigated, one with steel fiber and another with polyfiber. The residual load supported in Round Determinate Panel Tests can be matched with the strength of wire mesh, thus providing equivalent bag strength values for fiber reinforced shotcrete panels. There is also evidence of a panel crack width comparison to the load holding capabilities of the fiber in the shotcrete mixes. In practice, this provides designers with a method for comparing the ground support provided by fiber-reinforced shotcrete with that supplied by wire mesh.

Recent advances in virtual reality (VR) have resulted in major opportunities for improving the safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. VR has the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up, and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

This research came about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small-diameter bored raises (less than 150 cm). Currently, an operator must go down the raise and apply the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small-diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

In recent years, mining operations have experienced the impacts of climate variability, increasing costs, and changes in the socioenvironmental dynamics of the territories. For this reason, the aggregates industry needs to design and define concrete and immediate actions to address climate change. An appropriate way to achieve this is as follows: • Calculate greenhouse gas emissions, sources, and relevance factor. • Make projections of future scenarios. • Design and implement action plans The proposed climate change mitigation and adaptation projects are logistical optimizations of mining equipment (mitigation). Second is the design of an early warning system to predict possible flooding (adaptation).

Underground mining alters ground condition, producing a disturbance in the ground water regime. The level of disturbance is dependent on the local hydrology, geology, and type of mining. Serious damage is sometimes caused by ground water- when mine roofs collapse, causing subsidence. Subsidence is either unplanned, where pillars are inadequate to provide support; or planned, where total extraction occurs over a large area. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effects of mine subsidence on the ground water hydrology in the Warrior Coal Basin. Underground openings resulting from coal mining activities have been the most significant cause of subsidence problems in the Warrior Coal Basin, the main source of coal in Alabama. This problem will be even more serious in the future because 19 of Alabama's 24 billion tons of coal reserves are classified as an underground source (Tolson, 1982).

As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of U.S. coal mining companies are beginning to develop coal seams previously thought to be coo deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas contained in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep underground coal mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is used at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations must all be addressed in the design of longwall panels. This paper examines the influence of these factors, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, upon the feasibility of two, three, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Jim Walter Resources, Inc. operates four underground coal mines in Alabama. In 1986, during longwall recovery operations, sparks from a torch ignited methane that migrated onto the face after a roof fall. The fire quickly spread to the gob at the tailgate end of the longwall. The fire was successfully "area" sealed and mining operations resumed after five weeks. However, several problems were encountered during this process. This paper describes the events following the fire, methods used to control the situation, problems encountered, and steps taken to ensure preparedness for any future occurrences of this type.
