Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, there are all of the following rock types: oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently; overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw. Several possible methods for improving the blast design were considered and a geophysical method was chosen for testing. There had been reports in the journals that seismic methods were being used in Europe as aids for blasting design. A literature search turned up work by Haxby 1/ on use of a refraction seismograph for measuring pit bench rock strength. Using his work as a springboard, equipment was purchased and a program was planned and carried out for developing, evaluating and implementing the seismic method for routine mine use. Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

A fluorite ore (51.85 % CaF2) containing high contents of calcite, quartz and iron oxides was upgraded by flotation using a new reagent, oleoyl sarcosine (OS). In addition, quebracho and sodium silicate were used as depressants for calcite and quartz, respectively. The effect of pH, collector and depressants concentrations on grade and recovery was determined with the aim of optimizing the flotation conditions. Application of the two-stage cleaning achieved a concentrate assaying 92.17 % CaF2 with 80.1 % recovery. The Si02 content (0.76 %) was below the required level of 1 % SiO2. The mechanism of interaction between OS and fluorite, as compared to oleic acid, is also elucidated based on the zeta potential measurements.

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

It has been demonstrated by Arrowhead Industrial Water that a proprietary reverse osmosis technology can be used efficiently, effectively, and economically to reduce the levels of cyanide species, heavy metals, and other ions as shown in Figure 1 to allow safe discharge of a permeate solution to the environment. A simultaneous benefit of this process was the cost savings of reduction in quantities of cyanide requiring destruction by hydrogen peroxide and recovery of a concentrated gold and silver value in the concentrate solution.

One hundred and eleven pyrite samples from 3 porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. In particular cases, pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a Fast Air-injected hydrocyclone-Shallow Tank (FAST) flotation system. Conventional flotation cell kinetics are a compromise between two conflicting requirements, the need for an agitated zone for rapid bubble-particle collision, and a quiescent zone for bubble-pulp separation. The Bureau of Mines has designed a flotation system in which bubble-particle collision and bubble separation are carried out in two discreet unit operations. A bubble slurry was mixed with an ore slurry at a high rate in a modified air-injected hydrocyclone for rapid bubble-particle collision. The mixture was then fed into a unit specially designed for rapid separation of the bubbles from the pulp. A conventional flotation cell required 2.8 min to obtain 90 pet recovery at a 7-pct Cu rougher concentrate grade, whereas the FAST flotation system can obtain 85 pet recovery with a 13-pct Cu rougher concentrate grade in 0.28 min, and 92 pet recovery with a 7-pet Cu grade in 0.56 min. The Bureau's FAST flotation system is adaptable to a wider variety of flow sheets and could potentially allow for replacement of conventional flotation cells with smaller and faster units.

The installed world steel capacity remains 20% above the present world steel demand. Energy costs have risen enormously in recent years, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The role of the sinter plant is becoming more exacting as it becomes vital to minimize energy consumption. Continuous grate sintering, although pioneered in the United States, has always been the second grade burden preparation route, due to the predominance of easily up- graded ores which were more readily agglomerated by pelletizing. To achieve blast furnace performance up to best world standards, sinter of consistent high quality must be produced with virtually no atmospheric pollution. The plants must be capable of achieving this demanding level of quality whilst utilizing high proportions of revert materials, iron ore concentrates and fluxes . However, with the present difficult economic climate in the iron and steel industry, the economic production of sinter and ultimately steel is becoming increasingly important. The iron and steel industry is looking closely at costs and is identifying the need for sinter plants that will cope with a wide range of sintering materials to give the cheapest blend at varying output levels dependent upon demand. In order to meet these requirements, sinter plant builders are designing plants with particular attention on flexibility.

In 1968, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded S.S. Mullen Construction of Seattle, the Intake Tunnel (488 m by 4 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant No. 1. In1998, the Southern Nevada Water Authority awarded Lake Mead Constructors (Kiewit of Omaha) a parallel New Intake Tunnel (518 m long by 4.6 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant. Both projects provide water to a thirsty Las Vegas. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the two intake tunnels in terms of grout takes and pressures, geologic mapping and rock quality, grout penetration beyond the excavation line, degree of fracture grouting, and groundwater inflow boundary considerations. The paper provides a comparison of grouting techniques and material developments then and now.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.

The kinetics of leaching of galena in hydrochloric acid solutions with sulfur dioxide gas have been investigated experimentally. The leaching method is then applied to complex sulfide concentrates to evaluate its selective leaching capability and to develop a new hydrometallurgical lead extraction process based upon the method. The leaching reaction follows a linear rate with an activation energy of 61.9,KJ/mole. The rate Is of first order with respect to the product [H+] [Cl-] . Excel lent selective leaching capability f s demonstrated and an attractive hydrometallurgical process flow sheet is proposed.

Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and tempera­ture. Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits. This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from carbon. Two case history applications are described.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

TBM utilization rate is a component of machine performance prediction and critical for developing a reliable estimate of the construction completion time and cost of the tunnel. Estimation of the utilization rate involves identifying and quantifying the time dedicated to each activity in a tunneling jobsite. Ring building is a common activity in TBM tunneling and takes a large amount of tunnel excavation time when using shielded TBMs. This paper concentrates on the effect of tunnel diameter on the duration of downtimes related to ring building and examines the impact of machine diameter on downtimes. For this purpose, the dependency of segment installation time to segment configuration, and also the diameter of the tunnel was investigated. Furthermore, the ring building time for four tunnels with different sizes of diameters and a variety of ring arrangement were analyzed and the relationship between TBM diameter and segment installation time and consequently TBM utilization was evaluated.
