In 1996 a KBR (Brown and Root) led international JV was appointed to design and supervise an underground and surface package. The design of 6 km of tunnels, plus enlargements, deep shafts in glacial and sandstone deposits for the conversion of the existing LEP underground laboratory at CERN, Geneva adjacent to the Jura Mountains/Lake Geneva had to be undertaken in an operational environment and in conjunction with other underground constructions associated with the US$3bn refurbishment.

The Wharton No. 2 Mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates is located about 60 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia in Boone County. Daily production is 6,000 T.P.D. on a two-shift basis. The Hernshaw Seam is mined by conventional equipment with one continuous miner in areas where conditions are suitable. The plant is on Cow Creek .Branch of Pond Fork, which in turn flows into the Little Coal River at Madison, West Virginia. When the mine was opened in 1948, plans were developed to build a dual Baum jig plant complete with mechanical and thermal drying, and because full production would not be reached for several years, it was decided to install only one Baum jig setup although the complete structure was erected. This phase of the plant was placed into operation early in 1949, The rated capacity was about 300 T.P.H. of 5" x 0 raw feed to the jig. Being a drift mine, the 10-ton mine cars are dumped at the Headhouse, crushed to 8" in a double roll crusher, conveyed 780 feet downhill to the picking .house where the +5" slate is removed by pickers. All coal is crushed to 5" and 5" x 0 is conveyed 150 feet to the cleaning plant. Further describing the plant growth, the second jig setup was installed in 1954 to clean the increased production. During this operating period, exhaustive tests had ,been run on the plant bleed which was an overflow from the large sludge tank located inside the plant, When the second jig addition was undertaken, 5-14' diameter and 12-8" diameter cyclones with a 9-disc filter were installed for the solids recovery and water clarification system, However, the circuit was not closed and a bleed of part of the overflows from the 8" diameter cyclones was still necessary, To comply with the State Water Commission regulations on stream pollution abatement, four pumps in series were installed to discharge the waste water behind the refuse pile.

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. Clay-coating has been used as an environmental technology tool for the immobilization of toxic elements. The mechanisms of arsenate retention in clays suggest that not only the system pH is of fundamental importance in the process but also the character of metals and ligands that compose the electrolyte system. The goal of this study was to investigate the interactions between system pH and electrolyte ions on the retention of arsenate in an Oxisol soil. The sorption of arsenate decreases with the increase in system pH, reflecting the competitive sorption of arsenate with OH groups. Solutions containing Ca tend to favour the immobilization of arsenate in a relatively broad pH range.

INTRODUCTION The variety of uses of coal and the wide range of characteristics of coal combine to produce a need for a wide variety of laboratory analysis. Coal is used to heat homes, produce electricity, and make coke for steel manufacture. It can also be used to produce both gaseous and liquid fuels as well as a variety of chemical products. Various applications may require specialized analytical procedures. For example, some of the procedures developed for the coke industry, such as expansion or contraction during carbonization, have little value to the power generation industry. Even for a single application, the type of analysis needed can depend on the source and/or general nature of the coal. This section provides a general overview of the types of analytical procedures commonly applied to coal from the perspective of the user of this information, not the producer. The intent is not to detail laboratory procedures, but rather to discuss the application of commonly used laboratory tests in coal preparation. Accordingly, laboratory procedures are categorized by type of information produced. Gravimetric Analysis Procedures that produce weight-based information (parts per million, pounds per cubic foot, or weight percent). Such analyses can relate to the coal's physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics. Volumetric Analysis Procedures that produce volume-based information (amount of a mineral present as a volume percent). The primary source of volumetric information is from petrographic analysis. Application Tests Procedures that measure some characteristic of coal that has been empirically related to some application or handling or processing step. Typically, these procedures attempt to duplicate some aspect of the commercial application at laboratory scale and may produce information in the form of an index. Applications procedures do not measure a single component of the coal but infer the combined effect of multiple components. Each class of information is discussed in the order listed. References are provided as a source of more detailed information. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) publishes the most inclusive reference to analytical procedures. This publication,16 which is revised annually, provides extensive information concerning generally accepted methods of laboratory analysis. ASTM also provides standards for sampling and some information concerning sample handling.

Thiourea is being applied as an industrial leaching agent for gold and silver only in a few cases. A CIP technique was developed which eliminates most of the obstacles against its use. Mild conditions for precious metals stripping from the loaded carbon simplifies process conditions in comparison to cyanide CIP technique. Examples are given.

Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand. A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.

Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.

In a future world of 8.5 billion people in 2035, the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) projected 50% increase in energy consumption will require true "all of the above" energy resource use from oil, gas, renewables, nuclear, and coal. In particular, coal will continue to be the world's energy cornerstone, providing more incremental energy over that same time period than any other single fuel. Coal has long been a centerpiece of a low-cost, high-reliability electricity grid. Today there are 1.3 billion people across the globe without access to electricity and 2.7 billion people who do not have clean cooking facilities. The problem is spread across the developing world, but it is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, which together account for 95% of people in energy poverty. Without a commitment to achieve universal energy access it has been estimated that by 2030, there will be an additional 1.5 million premature deaths per year caused by household pollution from burning wood and dung and through a lack of access to clean water, basic sanitation and healthcare. Modern energy sources are essential to meeting these challenges.

Agglomeration techniques have been successfully applied to commerical heap leach cyanidation operations for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores, mine wastes, and tailings. The major parameters important for successful agglomeration pretreatment of these feed materials are discussed. Several commercial agglomeration-heap leaching operations are described. Two of the operations converted from conventional heap leaching to agglomeration-heap leaching after coventional heap leaching proved unsuccessful. Heap performance before and after agglomeration is discussed. A fairly recent operation that began production using agglomeration-heap leaching technology is also described. Two operations that processed milled tailings by agglomeration are discussed. The tailings feeds could not have been economically processed by means other than agglomeration-heap leaching.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

This paper appraises the energy requirements for mineral production through an exergy approach taking into account the long-term decline in ore grades. In this context, the exergy required for restoring resources from the dispersed state of the so called Crepuscular Earth into the physical and chemical conditions in which it was delivered by the ecosystems in light of the available technology, is known as exergy cost. The exergy cost is the point of reference in order to evaluate in a single variable, characteristics such as composition, concentration (ore grade) and the state of technology. The ratio between the exergy cost and the minimum thermodynamic cost required to accomplish the same process is called unit exergy cost and provides a measure of the irreversibility of the analyzed processes. Otherwise, the ore grade is one of the main issues which affects directly the costs associated with mining the ore. Hence, the unit exergy costs to produce minerals from progressively lower ores grades by the current technology is analyzed. The unit exergy cost curves are presented for some important minerals such as aluminium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gold, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc, in order to know the trend when the ore grade decreases.

As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of US coal companies are developing seams previously considered too deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is wed at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations all influence the design of longwall panels. This paper examines these influences, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, on the feasibility of two-, three-, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Pilot scale flotation tests were conducted with a 1-ft-diam column at the Barrick Resources (USA) Mercur mine, Tooele County, UT, to scavenge unleached (0.01 to 0.018 oz/st) gold values from the tailings of a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. The optimal recovery was 35 pct of the unamenable-to-leaching gold, at a grade of 0.353 ounces of gold per short ton, using a mixture of dithiophosphate, xanthate, and diesel fuel as a collector. This was achieved by floating approximately 1.6 wt pct of the CIL tailings. The gold values are believed to be contained in arsenic-bearing minerals, attrited carbon, and carbonaceous material in the ore. Redox potentials were measured with a gold electrode during the conditioning stage prior to flotation. The correlation between flotation recovery and redox potential values could be used to control reagent additions. Treatment of a previously leached and weathered tailings material, averaging about 0.055 ounces of gold per short ton, was also investigated using the column. The tailings were first water leached at approximately 600 C, and the water-leached tailings, which contained approximately 0.03 ounces of gold per short ton, were then fed to the column flotation unit. The effects of pH and sodium sulfide addition on gold flotation recovery and redox potentials were examined. maximum gold recovery, 36 pct, was achieved at pH 8.5 with a sodium sulfide addition of 0.18 lb/st.

Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. "INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree.
