A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safely studies revealed that numerous investigators explored a wide- range of techniques, including the investigation of bivariate and multivariate statistical models. Although these researchers addressed various issues of accident causation and prevention, they, in general, did not investigate through the use of quantitative models the multivariate relationships of several factors affecting mine safety in a causal framework. In this paper, systems dynamics and structural equation modeling are presented to simultaneously represent and study the effect of policy variables related to accident prevention along with the factors causing accidents and injuries. The application of these models to a group of mines revealed that current training practices at these mines do not appear to alleviate accident occurrences. It is inferred that the use of these quantitative techniques can provide a new direction of research in mine-safety studies.

While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

The problem of setting the proper control objectives and/or having several objectives to be met in the implementation of grinding control strategies can be resolved. The design and implementation of a distributed control system for safe operation of a grinding circuit while maximizing profit is presented. An optimal recovery/throughput target for a desired grind is accomplished by advanced control strategies at the DCS level. A mill load constraint control technique provides stable operation with a substantial increase in throughput, while the desired grind index is maintained by an inferential grind control technique without using a particle size analyzer. The integration of crushing/grinding and flotation in the overall design was the key to the success of the project. This synergistic effect was obtained by implementing a computer -plant management system in the concentrator. The overall philosophy of keeping the implementation simple but not simpler was used.

"In early 2014, Nicholson Construction Company was awarded, together with its tunneling sister company Bessac, the Norris Cut Miami Tunnel Project. The 2.5-meters diameter segmental lined tunnel, 1600-meters long, is aimed to replace the existing 54” force main connecting the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on Virginia Key to Fisher Island. To overcome project challenges such as the highly permeable limestone of the Fort Thomson Karstic Formation (one of the most permeable formation in the World), the project team has developed State of the Art solutions: The TBM was launched with pipe-jacking technique for the first 70-meters and then converted to segment erection mode. It allows substantial schedule savings and drastically reduces the size of the circular launching shaft. The TBM, jointly designed and manufactured by Bessac and Herrenknecht, can convert from slurry to EPB mode within a few minutes. The cutters can be replaced by wet divers thanks to an innovative application in the TBM industry. PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT The aim of this project is to replace the existing 54-inch force main pipeline which transmitted all sewage collected from Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor, North Bay Village and Fisher Island to the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) to Fisher Island. The existing pipeline consisted of pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe which is in poor condition in a number of locations and could be subject to sudden failure. An adjacent portion of this existing force main under the Government Cut (North Fisher Island) has already been replaced as part of a previous design-build contract and involved the installation of a 60-inch diameter fiberglass-reinforced mortar pipe installed inside a micro-tunneled casing."

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) and Associated Works will be the seventhland crossing between Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.The project includes site formation of about 23 hectares of land for the development of the BCP and anapproximately 11-kilometre (km) long dual two-lane trunk road (the “Connecting Road”), connecting theBCP with the existing Fanling Highway. The route alignment is within a relatively rural area of HongKong, with very limited similar infrastructure works carried out nearby. It passes beneath bothmountainous terrain, and alluvial plains, and falls within an area of several major regional faults andassociated metamorphism, resulting in a complex variety of ground conditions.ALIGNMENTThe Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region carried out extensive public engagement in selecting the alignment of theConnecting Road. Over 70 consultation forums with public bodies, including the District Councils, RuralCommittees, local representatives, etc. were held during the alignment design process. In order toalleviate the concerns of various nearby villages, and to minimize land clearance and environmentalproblems, the original alignment of 10 km long (3.5 km of tunnels and 6.5 km of viaducts) was revised toits final alignment of 11 km long which comprises 5.7 km of tunnels, 4.3 km of viaducts and 1.0 km of atgrade roads.The finally adopted alignment commences at the southern end with an interchange with the existingFanling Highway, part of Route 9, which is a dual three lane expressway currently being widened to dual4 lane. Alongside the expressway is the main rail connection to the mainland of China, and theinterchange viaducts connecting to the southern portal of the Lung Shan tunnel must cross over thisrailway. The southern portal is located in the foothills of Lung Shan, and the 4.8km long tunnel is alignedin a north-northeasterly direction. The southern half passes under mountainous terrain of Lung Shan,and then crosses a valley containing the Kwan Tei river. The northern section comprises low hillsseparated by an alluvial plain and Tan Chuk Hang village area. At the northern end, the tunnel turns tothe north-west to connect with Sha Tau Kok road, an existing single carriageway road, with a newroundabout interchange. Mid-way along this tunnel there will be a ventilation building, connected to the main tunnel by a 330m long ventilation adit. To the north-western side of this interchange is the900m long Cheung Shan tunnel, and after this the remaining 4.3km of the highway connecting with theBoundary Control Point is to be constructed as an elevated viaduct. Each installed rock bolt costs in excess of 520.00. High cost in conjunction with the primary purpose of safety makes it only logical to install the highest quality anchors possible. Each bolt has designed support capabilities in axial, shear and fluctuating ground condition, if installed to manufacturers recommendations. The quality of anchor is not; however, only affected by material specifications, but by transportation, handling storage, installation procedure, machine performance and geology. The quality is not only affected by many variables, but reliability should be assured. Non-destructive methods of testing reliability are only available for several types of bolts.

The results of an investigation to characterize the chalcopyrite/solution interface are presented. Several techniques including galvanostatic and steady state polarization, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy were used. The results show that the dissolution of chalcopyrite is incongruent. Initially, at low potentials(<O.34V), iron species are released which give rise to the growth of an iron-deficient sulfide (IDS) layer. The dissolved iron might reprecipitate as a hydroxide layer depending on solution composition. Continued oxidation involves diffusion of species through the product layer. At higher potentials (>O.48V) further oxidation leads to dissolution of copper and sulfur species with a resultant breakdown of the IDS layer. The changes in properties of surface coatings resulting from various electrochemical treatments are discussed.

Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world&apos;s largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

Ring gear and pinions used as the final drive on large metallurgical grinding mills are expected to transmit their rated horsepower reliably for long periods of time. Duty is 24 hrs./ day. Life expectancy of such gear sets is of the order of 20 years; that is, each gear and pinion flank is expected to resist failure by pitting for 10 years. This means that for a dual pinion gear set having a ratio of 18.42:1.0 and a mill speed of 10 RPM, every gear tooth will see 105.12 x 106 surface contact stress cycles and every pinion tooth will see 968.15 x 106 surface contact stress cycles in a 10 year period. The allowable surface contact stress on the gear and pinion is determined by the material hardnesses. The rule being the higher the hardness, the higher the allowable surface contact stress may be.

Unitization and containerization continue to grow with great rapidity throughout the world today. Every industrial nation outside of the Iron Curtain is devoting more and more time toward research of these developing sciences. Unitization and containerization are proving to be the solution to many of modern industry&apos;s most pressing handling and shipping problems. Manufacturers make large savings, carriers receive many benefits, and customers take an increasing interest in demanding that their shipments either be unitized or containerized. Unit-loads consist of items, packages or bulk materials pre-assembled into a convenient mass for handling by mechanized equipment and to fit the internal dimensions of carriers. It has been found that unitized handling and shipping offers cost savings too great to be ignored by anyone interested in the distribution of goods. At present, the benefits from unitized shipping and handling are being enjoyed only to a small extent due to the failure of many persons concerned with handling practices in recognizing only some of the advantages of unitization. Before the full benefits of unitized handling and shipping can be realized, some major changes in packaging and distribution practices will be necessary on the part of industry. Numerous investigations in the last two years show conclusively that there are more advantages and more inherent savings for shipping goods on pallets in unit loads than by any other method. There is no question that unit-load handling can offer significant advantages to the user over piece-by-piece package handling. Reduction in handling costs is the primary objective of such activities, but it is by far not the sole objective. Some of the other benefits that can be realized are:

The fundamentals behind a novel approach for creating inorganic/polymer hybrids are described. The binding of +2 charged ions, specifically Cue-and Cat+, to ionic functional groups is explored through UV-Vis spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. The novel approach uses an electric field to drive ions into a functionalized polymeric matrix, thereby inducing the precipitation of calcium phosphate species. Scanning electron microscopy images of the resulting composite illustrate the results of these precipitations with two distinct morphologies observed.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) performed comparative testing of six hollow cone water sprays from three manufacturers: static swirl chamber sprays from Spraying Systems (BD-3, BD-5) and Steinen-Hahn (SH-3, SH-5), and movable swirl chamber sprays from Repair King (RK-3, RK-5). Water flow testing was completed at three operating pressures (60, 80, and 100 psig) where both sets of sprays (3-series and 5-series) produced similar water flows, deviating less than 8% from the average water flow rate at each pressure. Airflow induction testing was completed at 80 psig using a hot wire anemometer to take air velocity measurements upstream of the spray nozzles. Respirable dust capture efficiency testing was completed in a 14.5-m3 (512-ft3) closed system dust chamber at 80 psig. The dust capture efficiency ranged from 7.2% to 9.9% for the 3-series nozzles, and from 5.3% to 7.1% for the 5-series nozzles. Sprays were also analyzed using a Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS), which uses light scattering to count and size the airborne water droplets from each spray. In both cases, Spraying Systems sprays produced the largest mean droplet size, followed by Steinen-Hahn and Repair King sprays, respectively. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in underground coal mining operations in the United States. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) now requires coal mine worker respirable dust exposure to be no more than 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (CFR 30-70.100, 2016). Potential overexposure to respirable dust by continuous miner, roof bolter, and shuttle car operators may be prevented if proper safety and health practices are implemented as detailed in the mine’s ventilation plan (CFR 30-75.371, 2016). Water sprays are a necessary component of an underground coal mine ventilation plan. They are important on the continuous mining unit for moving air and removing respirable coal dust from the breathable airstream. MSHA requires underground coal mines to include the number, types, location, orientation, operating pressure, and flow rate of operating water sprays in their mine ventilation plans (CFR 30-75.371, 2016). Water sprays can become clogged, requiring the sprays to be properly checked, maintained, and replaced in order to continue meeting the ventilation requirements described in the mine ventilation plan.In an effort to eliminate the problems with spray clogging, Repair King has developed self-cleaning movable swirl chamber hollow cone water sprays (RK-3, RK-5). The spray’s movable swirl chamber is designed to only open when water pressure is applied to the spray nozzle, preventing the nozzle from clogging. Anti-clogging sprays could improve mine production by reducing the amount of time spent servicing clogged sprays. Also, these sprays could improve health and safety of miners since they would continue to suppress and capture dust and continue to move airflow at the face, while a clogged spray loses this ability until it is cleaned or replaced manually. The objective of this research was to assess the comparability of the Repair King sprays with the most commonly used sprays in underground coal mines using performance criteria. An assessment of the sprays self-cleaning or anti-clogging capability was not conducted."

A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak&apos;s potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

Since 1976 CVRD is carrying out tests to develop a type of pellet made with organic binder. One binder that showed good possibility to be used in industrial plants is Peridur. An extensive framework of tests was run in CVRD&apos;s pilot plant. The results are presented in this paper. Finally, the decision was taken to carry out an industrial production of 50.000 t of pellets. It was scheduled for March &apos;81. The results are shown in this pager. It was not observed any detrimental effect of the peridur neither in the process nor in the product quality.

One of the chief sources of the world&apos;s supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual&apos;s carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man&apos;s best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don&apos;t need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping.
