The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by complex geometry of the open pit and the surrounding natural topography of an open-pit mine. The resulting inversion cap is known to contribute to the degradation of air quality in the open pit, resulting in loss of production. This paper discusses the development and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the analyzes effect of the geometry of the mine and the slope angle of the pit on the contaminants profiles in the mine.

High horizontal stress has been well recognized as a significant factor in roof control. It can adversely affect roof stability if the panel is designed improperly. Mining experience has shown that it can cause a cutter roof. The effects of high horizontal stress on roof stability depend on many factors such as magnitude and direction of the maximum principal horizontal stress, ratio of the maximum to minimum principal horizontal stress, structure and mechanical properties of the immediate roof and mining sequence. However, little is known about the intrinsic mechanism of high horizontal stress effect on roof stability except some conceptual explanations. In order to design a stable entry, the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress around the openings must be fully understood. Using the 3-D finite element analysis technique, this paper presents the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress field for a three-entry system with different orientations of horizontal stress. Based on the horizontal stress redistribution, possible roof failure for different orientations of horizontal stress is analyzed.

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. To prevent mine floor heave, the mechanisms of floor heave must be fully understood. Based on the field study, the mechanisms of two types of floor heaves are analyzed in this paper. The mechanical models for the two types of floor heaves are developed. The floor heave can be predicted by the developed mechanical models and the control measures are recommended.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

Dasher Regarding the March 1991 ME technical paper by De Souza and Moore: For more than a decade since my February 1981 article on how to use modern metric, which SME-AIME had decided to do, I have monthly pointed out metric errors to the editors. In part, I do this because there has been no action to allow editors to fix figures and tables or to allow them to require authors to do so. The latest resulting atrocity provokes this discussion of vibrating drill handle units being stated in decibels. Reply by T. Moore We have read the discussion of our paper by Mr. Dasher. Our reaction is one of surprise and incredulity. It would seem that Mr. Dasher takes exception to the use of the decibel scale to present vibration acceleration data, and the use of hertz as the unit for frequency. The basis for his objection to the decibel appears to be that it has no dimensions (which somehow invalidates its use), that it is "non-metric" and, finally, that it is parochial (of limited or narrow scope). His objection to the use of the term hertz is not stated, but we will assume that it stands condemned as "non-metric" and parochial. Obviously we disagree with Mr. Dasher's views and will now outline our reasons. Although the decibel scale originates from transmission line theory and telephone engineering, it is also at present widely used, not only in the fields of electronic engineering and acoustics, but also in the area of vibration. The original definition of the decibel (dB) was based on power ratios: dB = 10 log 10(W/W0) where Wo is a reference power. However, as the power measured across a given impedance is related to the square of the force acting upon this impedance, Z, a more commonly used definition is: [2 dB = 10 logF /Z) = 20 log F/F 10\ F0 2 /Z(0)] where F and F0 are the r.m.s. values of the forces. Now, if the measurements are related to one and the same impedance, the decibel notation in the form of 20log10(X/Xo) may be used as a convenient relative magnitude scale for a variety of quantities. Thus, X may, for instance, be an r.m.s. displacement, velocity or acceleration. It is only required that XD always be a reference quantity of the same type as X. That is, when X represents an acceleration, then X0 represents a reference acceleration. This is the formulation used in our paper. This was not an arbitrary choice on our behalf but reflects standard practice as specified in the International Standard ISO 5349-1986(E) Mechanical Vibration - Guidelines for the Measurement and the Assessment of Human Despite the metric prefix, the decibel is a parochial expression of (l) the logarithmic ratio of the loudness of a sound to what is normally audible or (2) the logarithmic ratio of two power signals in radio or electronics. A decibel is not a unit, much less an SI, unit and has nothing whatsoever to do with the acceleration of drill handles. Stating that m/s2 (acceleration) is decibels is without reason. Whoever reviewed this material should not have allowed publication of figures of dB and H.[ ] Exposure to Hand-Transmitted Vibration. This was clearly stated in the "measurement protocol" section of our paper. This quantity is then referred to as the acceleration level and is expressed in dB. We may have inadvertently caused some confusion when we simply used the term acceleration to refer to acceleration level on our diagrams. At the time, we felt the use of dB or m/s2 would make the context clear to the reader. For any confusion this decision may have engendered, we apologize. Since the decibel expresses the ratio of two like quantities, it certainly has no dimensions. It is, however, common practice to treat "decibel" as a unit as, for example, in the sentence, "The acceleration level measured at the operator's hand was 160 dB." The expression of measured quantities in dimensionless form is not inherently unacceptable. In fact, in many areas of engineering it is standard practice (consider the use of Reynolds Number, Nusselt Number, etc.). The fact that the decibel is a dimensionless quantity makes the question of whether it is a SI unit nonsensical. However, it is valid to insist that the dimensional quantities used to obtain the decibel values be expressed in SI units. A careful reading of our paper will make it clear that the measured acceleration was, in fact, expressed in units of m/s2 as was the reference acceleration (l x 10-6 m/S2). These are the accepted derived SI units for acceleration. See, for example, the standard ASTM E380-89a Standard Practice for Use of the International System of Units (SI) (The Modernized Metric System). Concerning Mr. Dasher's implication that hertz (Hz) is an unacceptable unit of measure for frequency, we would again refer him to the standard ASTM E380-89a. Here, he will find (section 2.4.2) that hertz is an accepted "special name" for the derived SI units-1. This is in keeping with numerous other international standards including ISO 5349-1986(E) to which we referred in our paper. In conclusion, we agree with Mr. Dasher on the desirability of expressing measurements in modern SI units. But we would remind him that the standards that define the use of these units, and the accepted means of presenting measured data, are in a continual state of refinement. It is, therefore, incumbent upon him to keep abreast of these changes if he wishes to constructively critique the work of others.[ ]

This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. Mechanized Roof Supports (MRS) have dramatically improved safety and productivity of retreat pillar mining in coal. Due to low capital cost and greater flexibility, retreat panels have in some cases approached the productivity of a longwall. Because of improved safety and rapid set-up time when compared to conventional timbering, MRS are driving a return to retreat pillar mining in many situations. This paper describes how panel layout can be optimized for safety and operational efficiency when using MRS for retreat pillar mining of coal. The potential for significant unit cost reductions will also be addressed.

Today’s industrial technology offers to optimize and reutilize the resources available in terms of scum that remains after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. Vast reserves of low-grade coal exist and tons of mill scale are produced everyday after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. The present research work aimed to optimize the various parameters of solid-state reduction of mill scale using low-grade coal from Rajasthan, India. This study investigates the effect of reduction temperature (850–950 °C in steps of 50 °C), reduction time (60 to 180 min, in step of 60 min), mill scale size (800– 300 μm), and mill scale to coal ratio (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) on achievable metallic iron percentage and its metallization. A higher percentage of iron content is obtained at a lower particle size of 300 μm. The structural analysis is carried out on 300 μm mill scales using XRD analysis, which shows the percentage of iron is approximately 63%, and metallization above 80% can be obtained under the reduction temperature at 900 °C for 180 min, for 1:3 ratio (mill scale to coal ratio). The chemical composition of the mill scale is obtained using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle sizes as well as distribution of mill scale are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements present in the mill scale are also verified using EDS, which indicates the presence of a major portion of Fe, followed by Fe2O3, Si, and C, respectively.

Man's use of 'glass predates recorded history. Although early man had no knowledge of how to form glass, artifacts have been found near naturally occurring glass formations where molten rock had been rapidly cooled. In areas where volcanic activity is evident, primitive people fortunate enough to have lived in that area used the naturally formed glass to make arrow heads, knife blades, tools and ornaments. These glass artifacts have been found all over the world. In fact in todays modern society there are recorded cases of aboriginal tribesmen in Australia fabricating arrowheads from glass bottles. 2. A Brief History of Glass The first evidence of man made glass were beads made around 2500 BC by the Egyptians. The Mesopotamians also made glass beads at about the same time.

The authors outline the development and application of blasting methods put into use 11 years ago at the Berkeley Open-Pit Mine, Butte, Montana. The blast design uses a very short delay (5 milliseconds) between detonation of explosives charges, a feature challenged several times in principle despite its success for Anaconda. Concern is expressed over the categorical rejection of very short delay blasting which can make the difference between success and failure of major mining operations. There is ample evidence to show that the method can be used successfully and not violate the concerns of the public.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with U.S. Borax and Chemical Corporation and the Kennecott Copper Corporation, has investigated the use of the microseismic method to evaluate the stability of large, open-pit slope walls. The method is based on the phenomenon that stressed rock normally emits subaudible rock noises, and the number of rock noises per unit time (noise rate) and the magnitude of the rock noises (amplitude) increase as the stresses in the rock approach the failure stress of the rock. Therefore, the detection and recording of those rock noises serve as a semiquantitative method of predicting the incipient failure of rock. This report briefly describes the three different types of microseismic apparatus, the procedures, and the results of microseismic investigations in the slope walls of the Boron Mine near Boron, California, and the Rimbley, Liberty, and Tripp-Veteran open-pit mines near Ely, Nevada. Microsesimic noise rates in stable inactive mining areas are between 0 and 10 noises/ hour; the rates in stable active mining areas are between 10 and 50 noises/hour; and the rate in unstable areas is as high as 2500 noises/ hour. High microseismic noise rates in the Liberty Pit correlate with the time of nearby earthquakes, indicating that the earthquakes affected the slope wall. The results provide evidence that the microseismic tech¬nique is applicable to large pit walls, and that the wide band, wide range microseismic equipment appears to be suitable for open-pit investigations.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.
