Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States, The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate:; for many years at the present-rate of consumption, According to Espenshade and Potter,1 the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30 percent kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is, much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Georgia. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover S. C., and Washington, Ga. Production of kyanite and synthetic mullite increased substantially in 1965.2 Output of, domestic kyanite concentrate increased by 14 percent in 1965, establishing a record high for the fifth consecutive year. Estimated annual consumption of kyanite minerals and synthetic mullite was in excess of 100,000 tons. The manufacture of mulatto refractories accounts for most of the kyanite minerals consumed annually, but non-refractory uses are expanding.3 Most mullite refractories are used as furnace linings in metallurgical and glass manufacturing furnaces. The remainder is used largely for kilns, kiln furniture, and saggers by the ceramic industry. Small quantities of kyanite without calcination are used as a source of alumina in the manufacture of glass, electrical and chemical, porcelain, pyrometer tubes, and in the form of kyanite concentrate to increase the alumina content of fireclays. Kyanite is used to improve workability, increase strength, and to compensate for firing shrinkage in floor and wall tile and other ceramic products.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.

No1ihwest Alloys produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial products. Two such products are dicalci­um silicate, termed as Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide, termed simply MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing power, comparable to traditionally used lime. Thus, the materials warrant study for their use in various appli­cations where neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions are required. One such application is the treatment of acid mine waters with the objective of removing heavy metals. The chem­ical stabilities of the produced metal precipitates are critically important, from an environmental point of view, for their safe disposal in tailing ponds. The EPA regulates waste material dis­posal according to the results from TCLP testing. In this ongoing study, three mine waters were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the control for these experiments. The waters were collected from the Bunker Hill mine, Berkeley Pit, and the Blackbird Mine. In addi­tion to testing the chemical stability of produced metal precipi­tates by the TCLP procedure, two other parameters were studied as well. They are: 1. the effect of water pH on stability, and 2. the effect of pH on the stability of resulting precipitates. In the first three months of study, it was found that neutral­ization with Di-Cal results in precipitates that range from equiv­alent to superior in performance as compared to those produced using lime for the waters from all three mines. An additional beneficial characteristic of precipitation with Di-Cal is the fast filtering characteristics of produced precipitates, when compared to the precipitates produced by lime. This property may be of significance when considering the improvement in drainage of tailing ponds and the volume of solids produced. This paper will discuss in detail the stability of metal precipitates with respect to various pe1iinent metals found in mine waters of Berkeley Pit (Cu, Zn, Mn, etc.), Bunker Hill (Zn, Mn, Ni and Co), and Blackbird Mine (Cu, Co).

Fly ash is a by-product generated from combustion of coal in thermal power plant. Disposal of fly ash is a major environmental concern for the power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, substantial quantity remains unutilized. Silica and alumina are the major constituents in fly ash along with lime. Aluminosilicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash, in presence of water, undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bond which holds the particles together. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in micropelletization without affecting the quality of micropellets.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

The Duval Corporation Sierrita copper and molybdenum mining complex is located approximately twenty-three miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The original open pit mine, Esperanza, was put into operation in 1958 and utilized one tailings dam until the Sierrita operation began in 1970, and a second pond was started. Both tailings operations continued to be operated separate and independently of each other until 1977, when the Esperanza Mill was temporarily shut down, and the Esperanza Tailings Dam was retired from service. Except for short periods of use, no new tailings were put on the surface. With the reactivation of the Esperanza Mill in 1979, the Esperanza tailings were combined with the Sierrita Mill tailings and put on the Sierrita Dam, leaving the Esperanza Dam in a retired state.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. A system, such as a mine production system or a mine ventilation system which includes the movement of commodities or some material between decision points may, in many instances, be effectively modelled as a network. Mining has often been characterized as primarily a materials handling function. To a great extent this is true, even though it is an over simplification of all the activities involved in a mining operation. Accepting the materials handling characterization of a mining operation permits the extension of the characterization to a flow process. That is, the ore flows from the mining face through the mining phase (excavation & loading, hauling, dumping) through the milling phase (crushing, grinding, recovery) through the smelter phase and finally to marketing. With this concept it is possible to depict a mining operation as a simple network. For example consider an operation consisting of two mines (A and B) with mills at each mine (MA and MB) with the possibility open to treat ore from mine b at mill NB, but it is not feasible to treat mine B ore at MA. The product of both mills is sold.

The results from a retrospective study are described in this gaper in which she past development drilling activities were investigated using geostatistics. The purpose of the study was to determine the amount of savings in drilling cost that could have been realized through the optimal placement of sequential drill holes using geostatistics. Out of 144 DDH's that were in place within the study area, the results showed a possible elimination of 34 DDH's without any reduction on the confidence interval of the global reserve estimates. If the incremental savings from one drilling campaign to the next were considered, however, the amount of percentage savings were even greater. Other interesting results from this study were; 1) tangible demonstration of the importance of a proper geologic delineation within the study zone, and 2) the robustness of the obtained experimental variograms from the rather early stage in development drilling.

There are several limestone deposits around the Lohja area in southern Finland. Raw material for cement rock is mined from some of them. The formations are geologically complicated, and therefore selective mining is used whenever possible. One of these mines is the Tytyri underground limestone mine, which is divided into two parts; Törmä and Solhem. In addition to the selective mining system hand sorting or picking must be used at the Tytyri mine to improve the overall grade of the blended limestone. Some means were needed in order to improve the quality and to increase the feed rate by the elimination of hand sorting. Sorting machines were considered and eventually a Sortex 811MW was pilot plant tested at the Ojamo mine near Tytyri. This machine now continues to be used on production.

Particle shape characterization is a complex task made more difficult because of the human eye's sophisticated recognition of shapes, giving rise to the assumption that shape analysis is considered a simple problem. Further exacerbating the problem is the question of whether particles have a general shape. Old and new shape measuring techniques are discussed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Walsh and Delta. Problems with the current image analysis equipment and future research equipment needs are presented.

"Nearly every input to a mine plan is based on an estimate. The estimates may be from sample data, historical information, models, or personal opinion, but in all cases, these values are simply expected values (means). In real life, we do not get to iterate the exact conditions at our mining operation many times to ensure that that average value is attained. The expected value also tells us nothing about the spread of values that that input might take on. The result is a significant amount of unquantified uncertainty in our mine plans. Unfortunately, it is often too expensive or time consuming to update planning processes and software. This paper presents a proof of concept spreadsheet scheduling tool that can be utilized to incorporate many geologic realizations (simulated models) into the mine scheduling process. While this POC is not intended to be a detailed model of uncertainty, it is to show that there are stepping stones available for mine planners to begin to embrace uncertainty and produce more achievable plans without requiring a significant change in their planning process. INTRODUCTION Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years, however many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize and even embrace the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process. Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple ore body realizations to provide a thorough unbiased “picture” of the geologic uncertainty but most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter. Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this paper presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The author hopes that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system that mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists, and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

The current National commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion, and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation, and relative benefits of various sources.

In situ chemical mining of primary sulfide ore requires distribution of injected oxygen in a large underground flooded region of broken ore. Although the maximum oxygen content of the leach solution will be dictated by the operating temperature and hydrostatic pressure, the actual oxygen content will be limited by the geometric dispersion of the injected oxygen, the rate of dissolution of oxygen, and the rate of convective circulation of oxygenated solution within the flooded bed of ore fragments. These factors are examined by a detailed theoretical analysis supported by laboratory experimental data. Typical results of the study illustrate that adequate dissolution of oxygen and circulation of oxygenated solution can be obtained in a column of 4 million metric tons of broken ore by using three gas injection lines and an oxygen injection to consumption ratio of 1.84.

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began implementation of a supervisory expert control system at a U.S Cu concentrator. The objective of this control system was to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and integration. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and associated benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The implementation of expert control at this concentrator has resulted in an estimated benefit of $50,500 per day. This is a net result of improved tonnage, reduced reagent consumption, improved concentrate grade and reduced energy per ton produced.

The results of column flotation tests conducted on a bulk sample of ultrafines discarded from the fine coal desliming cyclones at the Riverside coal preparation plant of Theiss Dampier Mitsui Coal Limited are presented. A 9% ash concentrate was obtained from a 51% ash ultrafine feed at 75-80% recovery of combustibles in a single stage of column flotation. From this result it is predicted that installation of column flotation at Riverside would lead to the annual recovery of additional coal worth $US5.1M. The operating conditions for coal and copper column flotation are compared and some differences which may result in a variation in column design are noted.
