A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

"Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects will add 6.75 miles (10.9 km) of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system, extending the route north from downtown Seattle. The tunnels are being constructed primarily in glacial soils using pressurized-face tunnel boring machines. Cover over the tunnel alignment varied from 13 feet to over 300 feet (4–91 m). Since the tunnels are located in densely populated urban areas, controlling ground movements and monitoring settlement were essential to success of these projects. Hundreds of geotechnical instruments, including extensometers, surface settlement points, and near-surface settlement points, were used in both projects to monitor settlement. The observed data were compared to settlement predictions made prior to tunneling, and analyses performed to update empirical factors to better estimate settlements. Recommendations for designing efficient and cost-effective settlement monitoring programs are provided based on the review of the monitoring data and analyses.INTRODUCTIONThe paper includes data from Sound Transit’s University Link and Northgate Link projects. These projects will add 6.75 miles of twin-bored tunnel to Seattle’s light rail system. The tunneling for University Link will extend the light rail system from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. Tunneling from downtown Seattle to the Capitol Hill Station was completed under the U230 contract, and tunneling from the Capitol Hill Station to the University of Washington Station was completed under the U220 contract. The Northgate Link extension will extend the light rail line north of the University of Washington, including approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of twin tunnels between the University of Washington Station and the Maple Leaf Portal and two stations, U District Station and Roosevelt Station. Tunneling for the Northgate Link project is still underway as part of the N125 project. At the time of writing, tunneling from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station has been completed. Therefore data labeled as N125 in this paper only include the portion of the alignment from the Maple Leaf Portal to Roosevelt Station."

"This study presents the results of three laboratory experiments on pressure balancing carried out at the University of Utah’s coal mine ventilation model. The model includes simulations of two working areas, one longwall mine gob, and a set of stoppings and seals. It also includes a pressure chamber between the longwall face and the gob. The model is ventilated by one main fan and one bleeder fan. A carbon dioxide injection system, equipped with flow control valves operated by a microprocessor, is used to pressurize the chamber and to maintain the pressure in the chamber slightly higher than that of the gob. During each experiment, fan pressures and stopping resistances were changed, the carbon dioxide injection rate was regulated, and the differential pressures across the stoppings were monitored so that the chamber pressure is always kept slightly higher than that the gob pressure. Result of these experiments are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Spontaneous combustion (Sponcom) is a safety hazard in underground coal mines. The history of coal mining in the US is replete with mine fires and explosions. Sponcpm accounts for approximately 17% of the total number of fires recorded in the U.S. since 1990. In the U.S., by law, worked out areas in coal mines must be either ventilated by a bleeder system or isolated by explosion proof seals. Experience has shown that seals are not airtight structures and that they allow some leakage of air into or out of the gob. In fact, seals “breathe in and breathe out” with changes in barometric pressure (Francart 1997, and Chalmers 2010). These changes in pressure affect not only the methane emission rate but also the ingress of oxygen to the gob, the lower the pressure behind seals is, the higher the ingress of oxygen. In mines ventilated by a U-tube exhaust system, the gob is often kept under negative pressure. Under these circumstances, an increase in barometric pressure may cause an influx of fresh air into the gob. This quantity may be sufficient to start self-heating of the coal, which can lead to spontaneous combustion. Depending on the coal characteristics and the ventilation conditions, self-heating of coal can start at temperatures as low as 35 ºC. If the heat is not removed it will increase the coal temperature leading to ignition and fire. The risk of Sponcom fires can be reduced by isolating the mine gob using rated seals, and implementing a suitable ventilation system. However, isolation seals are not airtight structures, thus some leakage of air is expected unless the pressure in the gob is neutralized. The alternative is to use a pressure balancing system. This requires a thorough knowledge of the ventilation system, the seal/stopping construction techniques, the airflow behavior in the gob area, and the gas build-up behind the seal line."

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.

It is well known that the chemical environment determines the success of the flotation process, however its characterization and control is difficult to achieve. This work evaluates the use of various measurements, including mineral potential measurements, in gaining an understanding of the influence of varying parameters such as the milling media and the reagent suite composition on the flotation performance of a platinum group metal (PGM) bearing ore. The results showed differences in the response of the various mineral electrodes to the different conditions, however the changes in flotation performance of the different minerals in the ore could not be wholly described by the electrochemical changes, demonstrating the limitations of these measurements.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

Setting up a plant sampling procedure by simply applying the usual statistical sampling theory was questionable. Two sampling concepts were considered in the sampling study: o a sufficient number of assays can be taken such that the average determined from these individual samples represents a known quantity of ore. o a sufficient weight of sample can be taken such that when assayed it represents a known quantity of ore. The test program included evaluation of sampling techniques, sample preparation and analytical methods. The overall sampling program is depicted in Figure 2.

Neutron capture prompt gamma-ray analysis provides the best method for on-line analysis of the elemental composition of large volumes of bulk material. This paper summarizes the Monte Carlo models which simulate the radiation transport within two such analyzer systems; namely, the borehole configuration and the conveyor belt configuration. The models are useful in the design optimization of the analyzer systems, in minimizing the amount of experimental calibration data for calibrating these analyzers, and in investigating the detection sensitivity for different elements. The computational scheme in these models is made extremely efficient by the use of various powerful variance reduction methods and by efficient data management. Experimental verifications of the two models carried out in the laboratory indicate very good agreement with the Monte Carlo results.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates.

A modelling study has been carried out on the flotation of the Moinho (Portugal) polymetallic sulphide ore, based on pilot plant data. It shows that successfully modelling the flotation of such an ore needs to take into account not only the influence of particle size, but also that of the mineral liberation of the ore. The benefits deriving from the research have been twofold in that the study has: 1. Improved the understanding of (a) the response of the ore to froth flotation and (b) the influence of regrinding the zinc middlings; and 2. Provided models for the optimization of the industrial flotation circuits when the plant starts up in 1991.

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4, respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016 the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. The construction of the continuing expansion of the Los Angeles Metro System has required the construction of eight new station structures. One contractor proposed, as a construction alternative for the support of excavation of the Hollywood/Vine Station, the use of soil-mix walls instead of the conventional soldier piles and wood lagging. Soldier piles and shotcrete or wood lagging support systems had been generally used on the other sub-way station excavations constructed to date throughout the system. Immediately east of that station and in almost exactly the same geology, the Hollywood/Western Station was being excavated at the same time using a conventional support system. This paper com-pares the performance of these two support systems in the alluvial soils of the Los Angeles Basin.

The year 1867 marks the first year of commercial production of phosphate rock in the United States. South Carolina produced almost all of the domestic output of mineral phosphate until phosphate mining began in Florida in 1888. During the period 1868 to 1949 the total marketed production of domestic phosphate rock was about 186 million long tons of which 71.5 percent was produced in Florida, 18 percent in Tennessee and 7 percent in South Carolina (1). From 1949 through 1960, Florida phosphate rock production has ranged Prom 71 to 77 percent of the total domestic production. Since three-fourths of the domestic phosphate production is from the Florida field, and since most of the phosphate from the Tennessee and Western fields is not processed, but used directly as electric furnace burden, this paper will concern itself almost entirely with water requirements for mining and processing ore from Florida. Figure 1 summarizes phosphate rock production for Florida vs. total United States production over the period 1947-1960.

The adsorption of ethoxylated sulfonates and nonionics of the same ethoxylation number?on a low-ash coal has been studied. The surfactant adsorption has been investigated as a function of concentration, pH, temperature and ionic strength for three homologues. Zeta potential of coal particles and surface tension of supernatants has been concurrently determined to eludicate the orientation of sudactant molecules on the coal surface as well as the mechanism of adsorption process. The adsorption data are utilized to calculate thermodynamic parameters such as the free energy of adsorption and isoteric heats of adsorption.

Cyprus Sierrita is a major producer of copper and molybdnum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, Arizona. Both pits were started in the late 60's and are in excess of 1500 feet in depth. Sierrita has utilized a Cat 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase SAFETY and PROFITS at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, it had produced additional profits totaling more than $1,500,000.

The role of sodium silicate in the anionic flotation of a Florida phosphate ore was investigated using laboratory continuous flotation tests, frothability tests and SEM observations. In the absence of sodium silicate, Ca++ promoted the unwanted activation of quartz by forming calcium bearing precipitates. The addition of sodium silicate enhanced the flotation efficiency through: (1) the removal of impurity minerals and calcium-bearing. precipitates from quartz surfaces by dispersion, (2) drier and more persistent froths stabilized by oily droplets containing calcium silicate precipitates, and (3) higher specific flotation rates of phosphate relative to quartz, leading to faster flotation rates and increased selectivity of separation.

An application of goal programming (GP) in evaluation of proposed purchases of major mining machinery is presented. It incorporates historical operating data compiled on mechanical delays to production time. The goal programming technique, which is an extension of integer programming, is used to maximize an objective function. The objective function combines the capital budgeting evaluation methods of net present value, payback period, profitability index, and total net earnings as goals weighted according to a management preference. The GP method gives an optimal solution to a multiple-goal problem. A sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the effect of an increased production forecast or a tightened budget on proposal selection.

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. In mid-1972 we determined that a fresh approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for Bethlehem. The reasons to us were obvious: Productivity was in the throes of a steady decline, and labor and maintenance costs were spiraling upward. Yet, despite this predicament, nowhere in the U.S. at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. After studying our own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, we presented a comprehensive research package to our management at the end of 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in our Corporation contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.
