Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). Using a Mark IV surface force apparatus, adsorption of dodecylamine hydrochloride on mica has been studied at pH 5.7 in the presence and absence of octanol. With amine alone, the repulsive forces between mica surfaces are reduced due to charge neutralization and attractive hydrophobic force; however, the latter is of relatively short-range with its decay length less than 2 nm. In the presence of amine and octanol, the hydrophobic force becomes more significant, its decay length being extended up to 6.5 nm. The increased hydrophobicity in the presence of octanol is attributed to the co-adsorption of the neutral surfactant with dodecylamine, which increases the packing density of hydrocarbons on the mica surface. The increased hydrophobicity due to co-adsorption is reflected in the improved floatability of silica when using octanol as an extender.

To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

Jigging is a separtion process that has already been described by Agricola in 1556. Fine size material is normally treated in a hutch jigging process, in which the heavy particles are penetrating the jigging bed and are recovered in the hutch. In this process, a ragging consisting of the same or higher specific gravity particles is inserted upon the screen. The ragging is used mainly as a valve to maintain a constant upward flow of the water. Since the heavy particles should pass easily into the hutch, the ragging particles are up to ten times larger than the maximum feed size (1). In the fine size range - 1 mm the performance of jigs is mainly insufficient; some of the low density particles percolate the ragging while the hutch water flow prevents the fine heavy particles from entering the bed (2). By giving a thin layer of particles, which posesses a density sensitivity in case of certain adjustment of flow conditions, directly on the screen, the precision of separation can be increased. Stroke length and frequency have to be adjusted to give this filter layer a homogenous porosity between 60 and 70% during the pulsion phase, and the "en masse" lifting of the bed, as it is known in jigging of coarser material, has to be prevented (3). In this case, the jig cycle is only of minor influence.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. Silver-gold ratios were studied at the Tayoltita epithermal vein deposit using channel sample, channel sample line, stope, ore body and vein sample populations. The ratios are highly variable among individual channel samples (25:1 to greater than 500:1) with both high and low values randomly distributed within ore bodies and veins. Whole vein ratios for the fourteen most important ore producing structures range from 44:1 to 105:1, and show zonal distribution relative to two small granitic stocks, low values closest to the intrusives. The zoned nature of the deposit suggests that the stocks, apophyses of an underlying batholith of Late Eocene age, were the heat engines which powered the hydrothermal system responsible for ore deposition.

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 establishes a nation-wide program requiring the Secretary of the Interior, through the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and the States to protect against the adverse effects of coal mining and to reclaim previously mined lands left without adequate reclamation. The Act requires coal mine operators to: restore the land to approximate original contour, return the land to a condition capable of supporting prior potential uses, protect the hydrologic balance, segregate and restore topsoil, control blasting to prevent damage and injury, establish vegetative cover, and control surface effects of underground mining. The Act also establishes: a reclamation fee on coal, a program to assist small operators, a program to give technical and financial assistance to State programs, State Mining and Mineral Research Institutes., a program for designating areas as unsuitable for mining, and a study on surface mining of minerals other than coal.

Management teams at mining companies begin to ask themselves whether to take a company public and, if so, how to do it as they approach the normal threshold for going public in terms of revenue and operating performance. Today, the expense of going public generally suggests the company has at least $20 million in annual revenue and at least $2 million in cash. The revenue number can be lower for mining companies with large reserves. In order to properly attract the investing public, the company must also be operationally strong with robust prospects. The company should have a strong management team and a consistent history of double-digit growth that will continue into the foreseeable future. Assuming the thresholds are met, a company?s management needs to weigh the pros and cons of going public.

After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

Mineralization features at the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit are discussed as they affect gold leaching and copper flotation behavior. Alteration-mineralization geological blocks are assigned in the zoned body, and each required its own geostatistical model. They extend horizontally outward from potassic to the phyllic-propylitic boundary, vertically from surface down to 300 meters, and include oxide, secondary enriched, and hypogene mineralization. Copper and gold values are calculated geostatistically from assays and all available geologic-mineralogic information. Reserves are classified for each geologic block and for each open-pit bench into leach or float ore according to metal grades, geologic characteristics, and supergene-hypogene relations. Finally ore extraction behaviour is briefly described, grouping gold and copper reserves into metallurgical families.

Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.

Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

Activated carbon loaded with gold from different halide solutions has been characterized by thermal analysis techniques. The mechanism of gold uptake by carbon varies from predominately adsorption for gold iodide to predominately reduction for gold chloride. TGA and DT A measurements confirm the existence of adsorbed gold-halide species within the micropore structure of carbon. These results suggest that the ration of reduced; adsorbed gold increases for gold halides in the order Au-I > Au-Br > Au-Cl. In the case of Au-I, TA results for the loaded carbon were compared with pure compounds of 12, AuI and AuI3.

CVRD was established on June 01, 1942, during the Second World War, through an agreement between Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom, to produce 1.500.000 tons/year of iron ore from Itabira mines in the State of Minas Gerais. As a result of several circumstances and political problems (the end of the 2nd World War reduced the Anglo-American support to its development and implementation), the venture just reached the originally targeted production 10 years after its establishment, operating within a mine, railway and port integrated system. Currently, this operational system from the South of Brazil owns mines in the State of Minas Gerais with an annual capacity of approximately 65 million tons, 900 km of railways, of which more than 500 km is a double line railway, six pelletizing units and the Port of Tubarao for ships with large carrying capacity.

This paper reviews a study conducted for Australian Coal Research Limited (ACARP) to assist Anglo-American operations with better understanding of coal burst mechanics and control based on U.S. practical experience, investigations, and inspections in three major U.S. coalfields over the past 45 years. The study examined both nonviolent and burst-prone case studies to identify contributing risk factors and addressed failure mechanisms for major U.S. coalfields in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky, which have diverse characteristics. To investigate the mechanics of coal burst, a multipronged approach is used. First, field measurements in three mines from East Mountain, Utah, are complemented with finite-difference stress analyses to address the importance of horizontal stress in coal pillar mechanics of violent failure. Second, the computational procedures for estimating seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities are reviewed, as these measurements point to seismicity being the trigger mechanism for violent failure of marginally stable structures. This joint-slip seismicity mechanism is in agreement with the more recentimproved re-examination of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) data from the Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah by University of Utah (UOU). Third, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology is applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. It utilizes data from 30 case studies including those from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other eastern U.S. mines. The statistical approach reinforces field measurements and points to strata rigidity, joint spacings, and horizontal stress field as significant factors affecting damage resulting from coal bursts. This provides practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk using a rigidity-cavability variable. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the mechanics and risk factors associated with coal bursts in major U.S. coalfields. By utilizing a multipronged approach that incorporates both field measurements and statistical-analytical calculations, the study offers practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk and improving coal burst control.

Methane Rating has been developed from a need, in South Africa, for quick and simple measurement of coal face methane characteristics. It employs proven existing direct measurement methods, adapted specifically for rapidly advancing coal face conditions, to deal with the short term high release rates encountered during continuous miner coal cutting. The Rating is a comparative value, relative to the normal or average conditions encountered within a maintained data base. The seam gas content and the initial emission rate are plotted against each other on a graph, where they are compared with the average conditions to obtain the rating. The higher the seam gas content, and the higher the initial methane release rate, then the higher the Methane Rating, on a scale of 1 to 4. Methane being released from a newly mined coal sample is measured once underground, from a sealed gas-tight canister. The sample is returned, still sealed, to surface and milled to rapidly release the remaining methane. It is later intended that the milling process is also completed underground. Applications include the identification of changing methane conditions, outburst prone conditions, methane emission against advance, and mining in devolatilised coal.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.
